Book Review: Detox, Declutter, Dominate by Perry Marshall
Perry Marshall’s Detox, Declutter, Dominate is a concise guide that aims to help readers streamline their lives by eliminating unnecessary burdens and focusing on what truly drives success. The book emphasizes the importance of prioritizing tasks and activities that yield the most significant results, a concept rooted deeply in the Pareto Principle.
Marshall draws heavily from Richard Koch’s seminal work, The 80/20 Principle, which explores how 80% of outcomes often result from 20% of efforts. While Koch delves into the intricacies of this principle across various aspects of life and business, Marshall’s book serves as a more straightforward and brief interpretation.
For readers new to the concept, Marshall provides practical advice and actionable steps to identify and focus on high-impact activities. His writing is accessible, making complex ideas easy to grasp without overwhelming the reader. The book’s brevity is a double-edged sword; it allows for a quick read but may leave some wanting more depth and original insights.
However, for those already familiar with The 80/20 Principle, Detox, Declutter, Dominate might feel repetitive. Marshall reiterates many of Koch’s ideas without significantly expanding upon them or offering fresh perspectives. The book lacks the depth and comprehensive analysis that made Koch’s work a cornerstone in productivity literature.
In conclusion, Perry Marshall’s Detox, Declutter, Dominate is a useful primer for individuals seeking to simplify their lives and focus on what truly matters. It provides a quick refresher on the Pareto Principle without the extensive detail found in Koch’s original work. While it doesn’t quite measure up to The 80/20 Principle in terms of depth and originality, it still offers valuable reminders for those looking to detoxify and declutter their personal and professional lives.
Liked the succinct A4 format, engaging design and simplification ethos. I was excited by the potential of this book after listening to Perry on the How I Work podcast.
However, I found this book unnecessarily repetitive and largely designed to up-sell the reader.
In terms of repetition, a call out box referenced a resource on the Star principle on page 26 for example, and then again on page 27. While this shouldn't be a big deal, the book is only 36 pages and therefore every line of copy and every square of page carries a premium. If you are going to repeat something, make it a central point rather than reference to a resource we have to go and get.
Most of the resources the book directs you to are attempts to up-sell, so be aware. Example on page 31 invites us to "take a personalized test..." to get your marketing DNA without letting you know that it costs $37. I gave up following the resources because I was sick of being sold to. The free resources tended to be links to old, lengthy and uninspiring videos.
At just 36 pages (with lots of images), this is more of a long-form blog post than a book. But the info is super valuable. Perry is a master copywriter and every word here is selected for maximum impact. Perry has written entire books on some of the concepts he covers here in three pages. I wish there was more meat here but the concepts are a good reminder. I’ll probably read this every few months just to stay on track.
The information is excellent however, I've encountered all of it before. I imagine someone completely new to the information may not appreciate just how valuable it is without more stories to illustrate how well it works.
