“There’s no time. Remember your imaginary lover....”
Cory Caldwell woke up by the side of the road with no memory of how he got there. He pieces together who he is but has no idea what happened to him.
Dark visions haunt him—flashes of blood, magic, and a brutal fight. Scorching dreams of a faceless lover offer no clues. His gut warns that something urgent is eluding him, and that time is running out. Worse is the sense of bone-deep grief, as if Cory is missing part of his soul.
Desperate for answers, he hops a bus for Fox Hollow, a town famous for psychics, mediums, and those with supernatural abilities. Then a stranger calls Cory by name and casts a furtive glance around him. “There’s no time,” the man says. “I need your help. Remember...” Can Cory unlock his missing memories and rescue the stranger before it’s too late?
Imaginary Lover is full of dangerous magic, hurt/comfort, brave monster hunters, dark curses, sincere psychics, found family, and forever love.
Imaginary Lover is the eighth book in the multi-author series, Beyond the Realm: Remember. Each book is set in its own world and can be read as a standalone novel. Join eight authors on eight very different, romantic, and magical stories as each one writes their own take on the same concept.
This was a really cute story! I love how this book brings in all the the other series Brice writes in. And that it is set in my favorite of them, Fox Hollow! Word of warning, those dreams of Cory's are not safe for work, whoo. *fans self* I hope we get to see more of Cory and Max. I fell in love with Cory and really want to learn about the man who captured his heart.
While I really love all the witchy worlds that Ms Brice has created with her 'Badlands', 'Witchbane', 'Treasure Trail', 'Fox Hollow Zodiac' and other series I'm starting to find things a bit confusing if you haven't read all of the series which unfortunately I haven't and that's something that to be honest is fairly high on my TBR list since this is an author that I really like.
While 'Imaginary Lover' is a short story that takes up into the world of 'Fox Hollow' and there I liked the premise overall for me it was really hard to get emotionally invested in the characters since we're brought into an established relationship and at a point when the characters don't really know each other much less anyone else. Some of the characters that we meet are obviously from 'Fox Hollow Zodiac' so I admit I'll be going back to that series to get their story. while one of the characters who shows up part way through is from Ms. Brice's series 'Treasure Trail' and there's also reference made to a character that first appeared in Ms. Brice's 'Badlands' series as well as a reference or two to characters who first appeared in Gail Z. Martin's 'Deadly Curiosities' series (and just a bit of FYI Gail Z. Martin is Morgan Brice).
For anyone who hasn't read at least some if not all of this series I can see where it would make for...a bit of confusion and secondary characters who don't seem to have been developed in any way. When it fact this is not the case, but their stories are scattered around in other series and being a short story the author really is limited on how much time can be given to character development of secondary characters.
Ironically I found that some of the secondary characters felt more developed than our MCs in this one. I never truly got a sense from Cory that he was as invested in saving his soulmate as he should have been and as for his soulmate, Max well lets just say that for me he's still a bit on the imaginary side. He held even less depth and character than Cory did. Maybe if we'd been give some Cory and Max before the whole banishing/memory loss even they would have had more substance throughout the story...but that's purely conjecture on my part.
The saving grace on this one was Liam, Russell and Dr. Jeffries...I have every intention of reading 'Huntsman' which I'm sure will give me Liam and Russ's story and with any luck at least a bit of Dr. Jeffries.
************************* An ARC of 'Imaginary Lover' was graciously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is not an effective amnesia story. Unfortunately, it's not a great romance novel either. Imaginary Lovers contained elements that could have been great if handled properly: magical amnesia, soulmates, witches, curses, and an established relationship. It's too bad that this novella wasted the potential of every single one.
SPOILERS TO FOLLOW
The amnesia plot line was easily solved -and not even by the main character. Cory initially relies on his oddy (and ruinously, for the plot) bang-on instincts to figure out what to do. His gut feelings are so strong that he can ask himself yes or no questions like a magic eight ball and his gut twinges according to the correct answer. When that no longer works, Cory essentially has things explained to him by a slew of side characters. Speaking of, these five or six side characters are not developed. They are names only, shoved in to provide all the answers in the form of exposition dumps.
Cory's soulmate Max falls into the same category of a two-dimensional, cardboard character. Hell, we know less about him than we do about the Ben dude (an uncle? a family friend? I don't remember). Consequently, there is no emotional impact in any part of this story. It's real hard to care that Max had been shoved into a pocket dimension when he's nothing but a name. We have no understanding of their relationship from Cory's point of view, merely a side character's two-paragraph rundown of their relationship history. When Cory regains his memories of his missing soulmate it honestly doesn't make a goddamn difference because the memories aren't explored at all, let alone in a meaningful way.
The hollowness of the characters and the relative ease with which they solve their problems means that there is very little tension, urgency, sense of danger, or emotional investment in the characters or the outcome. I didn't care about their relationship, I didn't care that Max was back, and I skipped the sex bits.
I’d read this author’s other story set in Fox Hollow, so I was excited to see that Imaginary Lover would be set in that same world even though it’s part of a shared series with other authors. The opening does definitely grab the reader’s attention with Cory’s predicament, waking on the side of the road without his memory.
From there it’s a quest for him to find out who he is and how he wound up that way, with him finding his way to Fox Hollow and the interesting residents there to look for help. It was great to see so many familiar characters again, and watch as they help Cory find out who he is and who his dream lover is as well.
Along the way some characters from the author’s other series do pop up in both quick and substantial cameo roles as everyone works to discover what happened to Cory, and how to help him and his lover. There is a fair bit of drama, though nothing over the top, and peppered in along the way are plenty of steamy times with Cory and his dream lover. Can you say “sex magic”? Yep, that’s your tease for this one ;-)
I really enjoyed visiting Fox Hollow again, and wound up reading this in one sitting. Imaginary Lover gets 4.5 stars from me, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of Cory Max in this author’s different series in the future! This book is meant for readers 18+ for adult language and sexual content.
That was fun! It grabbed me right off and didn't let me go. Even though I knew Cory and Max would find each other again there was that nagging little voice saying "maybe not this time". So glad it was wrong. Like all stories that draw me in it was over way too fast.
While I thoroughly enjoyed this, I think I would have preferred to have read Huntsman: Fox Hollow Zodiac Novel 1 first. This definitely works as a standalone but there are characters that come from the Fox Hollow Zodiac Series that play a part and I wish I knew more about them and the town of Fox Hollow. I'll definitely be looking into reading that series.
I really loved that the author stayed within the concept of the series, where as some of the other books didn't, well, in my opinion they didn't.
TAGS --paranormal -- evil vs good -- witches -- hunters -- a variety of other worldly creatures -- small town -- missing memories -- lost soulmate -- drama -- adventure -- tugged at my heartstrings -- some very sweet moments -- some heart stopping moments -- loved the MCs... Cory (he has the largest role) & Max (wish there was more with him) -- such a sweet and sexy ending -- wasn't ready for it to be over -- couldn't put this one down -- definitely can be read as a standalone but I'd read Fox Hollow Zodiac Series first
I discovered Morgan Brice books this year and I am slowly working my way through her books. It was nice having appearances of characters from her other books. This one is a nice intro into Fox Hollow and it's paranormal population, I really need to read the first book about Russ & Liam.
Cory wakes up on the side of the road with no memory of who he is, or how it got there. His only clue is dreams he has of an Imaginary lover. He journeys to Fox Hollow for help. There he meets psychics, witches and shifters who help him.
I loved the mystery of what happened to him, and my heart broke for Cory. We don't meet Max, his lover, best friend, and fellow hunter, till near the end, but we do see him through dreams. It was nice to finally read his story, especially after he is mentioned in the King of the Mountain books. The paranormal world is amazing and I can't wait to dive into the Fox Hollow series.
3.5 stars! I received a ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a cute book! this is my first book by this author and apparently this novella is set in the same universe as his other series. I'm intrigues and will definitely check those books out.
Things I loved: - It starts out right in the middle of the story, which works out great for a novella. - Cory was a lovable character and I enjoyed hos journey to remember everything he had lost. - Apparently there are a lot of cameos, and for me it made me excited to read their own books. - The heat... holy shit those couple of scenes were hot! - The soulmate trope... it was sweet.
What I missed: I wanted to know Max more. he was on the fringes of the story, and I understand why, but I felt like he wasn't given justice.
A sweet and short story that hooks you in from the beginning when Cory wakes up on the side of the road with no memory of who he is. I really liked Cory's character, and my heart ached for him when we learnt that his soulmate, Max, had been ripped away from him. I also really enjoyed going back to Fox Hollow and the cameos we get in this quick read made me squeal with excitement. My only issue is that I wish we got more of Max in the story. I understand that he is supposed to be on the fringe since that is their main mission: to get Max back. However, it just made me a little sad that we didn't get enough time with Cory and Max together. But if you're looking for something with an interesting storyline, and great world building in a short amount of time, as well as likeable characters, this is perfect!
3.5 stars. This is a very quick interesting read. While it is completely stand-alone, I would recommend reading both the Fox Hollow books and Kings of the Mountain as the characters do make appearances and I feel like it adds a lot to the enjoyment. It’s very intriguing from the first page, as Cory has lost all his memories so you get to learn everything with him which I think adds a layer of fun to the story. It is light on the romance, so don’t go in expecting a lot of that, but you can expect a well written magical mystery tale.
This is a great paranormal romance. Cory is such a sympathetic character. I would love to read more about him and Max. I have read Morgan Brice's Treasure Trail and Badlands series and really enjoyed them. It is fun that her characters make appearances other series. Ben from Treasure Trail played a role in this book. I have not read the first Fox Hollow book, The Huntsman, but plan on starting it now. I can't wait to see how Liam and Russ's story started.
This is my first Morgan Brice book, but it isn't going to be the last one. I'm going to go look for all the books in this series, because I really enjoyed this world.
I really felt Cory's stress over not knowing who he was and then trying to figure out everything. It was really intense at times.
Morgan Brice does it again. I love the way this author writes. Her stories are complex and engaging. Draws me into the paranormal world and doesn't let me go.
When Cory opens his eyes, he doesn't know where he is or who he actually is. All he's got is some cash and documents that seem to be fake. However, the man doesn't break down, as he decides to find out who he is. By luck, Cory decides to find answers to his numerous questions in the small town of Fox Hollow. It turns out that the town hides some amazing secrets, just like Cory himself. After all, witches don't cast some extremely nasty curses, the removal of which requires a really great magic skill, on everyone.
"Imaginary Lover" by Morgan Brice is the eighth volume in the "Beyond the Realm: Remember" series created by eight amazing authors. As this time the one who takes us on an amazing adventure is none other than Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin, we can rightly expect that this story is filled with all the things we like the most, as this author always generously gives us what we want. Reading "Imaginary Lover" we enter the universe we know and love from many urban fantasy novels that we have been reading for years thanks to our beloved Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin. In her latest novel, we can find everything that we love in her stories, i.e. magic, people endowed with extraordinary powers, various races of paranormal beings, great love between people who are destined to be together, courageous heroes who must face evil. However, in "Imaginary Lover" we can also find an element that differs this story from all the previous ones, because our main character, Cory, doesn't get to know his other half on the pages of this novel. He's already in relationship with love of his life but must remember his beloved and reconnect with him. Sounds interesting, right?
An important element of "Imaginary Lover" universe's construction is the fact that there is a very clear connection between this novel, the previously published story titled "Huntsman" and other urban fantasy novels written by the author. Don't worry, people for whom "Imaginary Lover" is their first Morgan Brice's book will have no trouble following the events of this volume, and they will undoubtedly be pleased to learn other stories related to the one told in this novel. As for the author's fans, they will undoubtedly be delighted to see how "Imaginary Lover" and "Huntsman" intertwine with the author's other stories. While we knew that the recent books written by Morgan Brice are set in the same universe, we were not entirely sure at which point they connect with one another. Now we have received the answer to this question and the next piece of the huge jigsaw puzzle presenting the world created by Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin has found its place.
Fantastic universe is not the only advantage of "Imaginary Lover", as in this book we can also find some characters we known and love, as well as some new ones. I admit that I really like the fact that the author gave us a chance to once again meet the characters we got to know recently, as well as someone we have not seen for a long time. What's more, it allows us to get to know some of the protagonists we know a little better, which is also extremely important, because in the case of Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin's novels, the characters are always one of the greatest advantages of her books. And since this is the case, I must write more about Cory, who is our main character, and thus the new face of the author's universe. What's important, we get to know him at the same time he is trying to get to know himself, which is undoubtedly very interesting and unique. It's even more significant as Cory relies on body memory, feelings and inner voice, and therefore on some of the elements that make us who we are, that remain when we cannot count on actual memories and the past.
In conclusion, "Imaginary Lover" is a very interesting novel that is part of the "Beyond the Realm: Remember" series, and at the same time is another installment set in Morgan Brice/Gail Z. Martin's urban fantasy universe. Going on this fascinating adventure, we can count on a good company of wonderful characters, exciting moments, a variety of deep feelings connecting the heroes and some truly unforgettable moments. What can I say, read this book. It is worth it!

„Imaginary Lover” autorstwa Morgan Brice jest ósmym tomem serii „Beyond the Realm: Remember”, którą tworzy ośmiu autorów.
Imaginary Lover by Morgan Brice is the second novel I’ve read in the Beyond the Realm: Remember collection. Each story is a standalone with the same thematic element of one lover having some form of amnesia due to the machinations of an evil paranormal element. In this case Cory wakes up alongside the road, uninjured, but also unable to remember how he got there, who he is and just about everything else. After walking into the nearest town he tries to look himself up online only to hit a dead end.
Leaving the library where he used the computer, he sees a brochure for an institute specializing in psychic readings and decides to make his way there. Hoping they can unlock his memories. In the meantime he is plagued with erotic dreams about a man who he knows is special to him but other than that is totally unrecognizable until Cory steps off the bus in the town where the institute is and has a vision of the same man telling him to hurry and to remember.
This series of novels is really quite intriguing and what poor Cory must go through to recover his memory is pretty unpleasant, not to mention the very scary realm his lover was transported to as well. I really liked how the entire psychic and wiccan community helps poor Cory—especially since they actually discover something about him that gives them both worry and pause. There are actually several forms pf paranormal creatures in this novel and each one lends a hand in solving the mystery of who or what made Cory forget. I especially enjoyed Liam who was a manic type of well-meaning worrier who also baked to comfort himself and others.
Imaginary Lover is another unique twist on a recurrent theme. I did feel it was a bit hard to get to know Cory’s lover and have real empathy for him mainly because we see and hear so very little from him during most of the story. I rather wish the author had dabbled in alternating or occasional switching of the point of view in the narrative just so we could get a better sense of Max, Cory’s soul mate. However that is really just my personal preference and others reading this exciting and fast-paced novel may feel differently. Either way Imaginary Lover is yet another great selection from this fascinating collection.
I love Ms. Brice and her short story is fleshed out and amazing. This can be read as a stand-alone but you might want to visit Huntsman to get background info on some of the characters and why this town is so special.
Imagine waking up in a ditch, in intense pain, and having no idea where you are or even who you are! Your only clue to your existence is a driver’s license declaring your name is Cory Cox. The wallet contains a bit of cash but no other clues. Injured and disoriented, Cory makes it to a motel to try to assess his injuries and this frustrating and frightening situation.
Studying himself in the mirror, it’s apparent he has sustained multiple past injuries including some very strange bite marks and a bullet wound. Disoriented and upset, he instinctively feels he should be sharing this room with someone else.
Then the recurring dreams begin, which are erotic and intimate as if he knows the man in them is almost part of him, yet there is no name or solid recollection when he wakes. Who is this Imaginary Lover and why can’t he remember him? This is the crux of the riveting plot that kept me glued to this intriguing paranormal.
Yay, I got to visit Fox Hollow again which I enjoyed. Filled with residents that possess special powers, it is a tight-knit community that takes care of each other. Cory is immediately pulled into their circle of protection. Ms. Brice writes with such clarity and force and her stories are always such wondrous adventures of good vs evil. The short story did not disappoint and makes me eager for more adventures in Fox Hollow.
Cory is so lost, I couldn’t help aching for his intense confusion and pain. Can Cory find this man that must be connected to his very soul as the feelings he has are as intense as a physical bond? Magic, good and evil witches, shifters, and tons of paranormal action are packed into this novella. An added bonus is I enjoyed hearing about my favorite characters from her previous books.
If you love the impossible feeling so very real, this will be a magical experience. Happy Reading!

What I Think: This tale was captivating from the very first page! The only thing worse than knowing too much is not knowing enough. The thought of not being able to remember who I am would never be as crushing as not remembering who my loved ones are. In her usual style, Mme. Morgan manages to craft fully realised characters that take on a life of their own, even for someone who has only dabbled into her worlds. Cory’s ability to trust himself and keep moving in search of the truth is a testament to a mind that has lived and lived well with no regrets. Him meeting so many kind souls at such a point in his life was a relief because I was getting as anxious as he was with every day that went by without his memories. But I love the switch in his mind when he realises that his dreams are real and with all the magic at hand, it still falls to him to need as much as possible and to love as deeply as he can bear, the power of intentions manifest into the physical world as pure magic (hnm, I hope it doesn’t show I’ve been reading The Four Agreements). It was so nice to hear of old friends again as people from the other tales in the series show up. Even as much as it made me take note of the tales that I’m craving to read because among those I know, there are plenty characters that make you need to know them, while wondering at the differing paths that must have led them to this confluence. And when the touch and go begins, boiling things down to their true essence, I had my heart in my mouth until I could breathe a sigh of relief. I would go to war anytime, anyday, side by side with this group because their care and affection was a heart-melting magnet. With enough passion to engulf a soul, a curse to beat, a soulmate to bring back from the world between worlds and a new found family that is ready to go all the way to the end with him, Cory has all he needs to remember where his heart belongs!
Verdict? A modern fairytale reminder that love truly is the strongest of all magic and doesn’t need a spell or caster. Only that you be true to yourself!
This is written as part of the Fox Hollow series that Morgan Brice has started, with connections to several other of her urban fantasy/paranormal series. I don't really see this as a stand alone because knowing about Fox Hollow will help. I recommend reading The Huntsman to have it make the most sense (you can read this first, though, and it should still work). That said, this is an excellent edition to the shared universe and adds just a bit more explanation and fleshes out other characters a little more. That's what's been truly well-done by Brice in all of the connected series. I enjoy getting to see flashes of other characters, even if it's just in passing, because it gives you just a bit more of who they are. (You don't have to read any of the other series to enjoy the Fox Hollow books but I think it will increase your enjoyment).
This is a complete story so you get everything, including character development for Cory and a little of Max. Brice does a great job of keeping you guessing on whether or not Cory will get to Max in time. I don't want to give it away but there were crappy magical doings. Brice doesn't disappoint in the lead up and there was some definite tension and even though I've read plenty of other books in the connected series and know we will get a good ending, I still had doubts and was so worried. But it paid off in the end. Whew! The ability to add tension and have a satisfying conclusion to what is really more of a novella is a hallmark of Brice's writing - and something I really enjoy.
If you like paranormal/urban fantasy with witches, mediums, shifters, you name it - then you'll like Brice's works. I recommend immersing yourself in the entire world and reading all of the connected series. It's like reading a television series (I'm serious!).
Imagine waking on the side of the road and having no memories. The only thing you feel/ sense is that a piece of yourself is missing and nothing is as it seems. This is the case for the story’s MC, Cory. With nothing to tell him who he really is, and having vivid dreams of a faceless man who wake him from sleep sweating and panting, Cory must find some answers. He heads for Fox Hollow, where he hopes a psychic can help him find out who he is, how he ended up where he did, and who the man is he keeps dreaming about.
In true Brice fashion, this story is a fantastical adventure that weaves a tale of magic, mayhem, fantasy, and lore that keeps the reader enthralled. Her spellbinding Secret to this is by interspersing characters here and there from other series. I love it when the MCs from her other series stop by. It is very reminiscent of the way cast members make appearances on different TV shows ( i.e. Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., Chicago Med). While it isn’t a constant, it’s cool when it happens, like one big giant family, and that’s the amazing type of urban fantasy world-building that Morgan Brice creates in her books.
While “Imaginary Lover,” is part of an author collaborative Series: “BEYOND THE REALM: Remember” it is also part of her “Fox Hollow Zodiac Series.” Even though the book has all of these beautifully connected threads, it can absolutely be read as a stand-alone without the reader feeling lost, or a disconnect from the world or characters in the story.
I used to think that I wouldn't like urban fantasy books or books with monster hunters, witches and psychics, then I read a book by Morgan Brice. That was a year or so ago and I've been reading her books ever since.
Imaginary Lover is part of a series – Beyond the Realm: Remember – where the books are only connected by the theme of "remember." In addition, Imaginary Lover takes place in the same world as Huntsman, the first book in her Fox Hollow series which came out earlier this year. Characters from that book, and others from her various series, appear in Imaginary Lover but the story stands on its own just fine.
This book really felt like it was much longer – in the best way. The main gist of the story is two soul mates being separated by a powerful spell – one of them left here on earth and the other in the unknown.
I loved how people in the town of Fox Hollow were willing to come to the aid of a stranger. The town is full of psychics, witches and shifters so none of them batted an eye when Cory told them his nearly unbelievable story.
This is a book that grabbed me and held on right from the start. As well as having lots of mystery and intrigue, it's HOT. Some of the things that Cory does to save his soul mate, Max, were pretty intense. I don't know if they are all based on fact or lore, or if they are strictly creations from the mind of Morgan Brice. In any case, this was a fantastic story and I'm ready to read more books set in this world.
A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

🌟🌟🌟.5 . This book follows our main character Cory after he wakes up alone in an abandoned road with no memory of himself or how he got there and a bone deep feeling of him missing something big. It's filled with emotional moments, found family, witches, magic and soulmates who will go beyond realm to bring their mate back. . Firat, I really loved how the story started. It had an air of mystery to it and that piqued my interest, which led to me reading the whole book in a single setting. Cory was strong and determined even when he didn't know who he was. We could see he was scared, but he held to his gut feeling and got help. I mean, the side Characters in this book were amazing. It's like found family but like a crash course version. They came together even when Cory was a stranger to them and helped him solve his puzzle, and that warmed my heart! . Second, I really liked the concept of magic and how it's used, and the story setting. Even though there are paranormals, the hunting part of it was quite different. I mean how can I not love me some sexy hunters who shares a soul that can bring them back from a different realm? Also, the chemistry was amazing. I was restless knowing my baby was all alone in the dark in another reals, but then somethings happened and I was flustered. Seriously. Though the ending was good, it wasn't what I expected. I was looking forward to a lot more drama and mayhem, but that's okay. The book was still really good. Overall, I really enjoyed my time reading this book even though I expected a lot more from it . Thank you gayromancereviews for the review copy!
Although Imaginary Lover is part of the Beyond the Realm: Remember collection, I didn’t pick up any of the other books. The main reason that I decided to pick it up was because it had close ties to Morgan Brice’s multi-book universe. I really enjoy this world that she’s tied together and I was hoping to to reconnect with some of those characters. For the record, even though most of the characters were merely mentioned, I wasn’t disappointed. 😉
Cory finds himself in a situation that forces him to trust total strangers for a huge part of this story. As he pieces his life together, he discovers just how important his Imaginary Lover is to him and knows that he will do pretty much anything to get him back. There are plenty of people who are willing to help and support him to make it happen and keep them safe in the process.
Imaginary Lover was fairly short, but it wasn’t lacking. There was plenty of danger, suspense as well as love, devotion and even heartbreak. Just enough to make me realize how much I miss these characters and the world they dwell within. If you haven’t read any of the previous books, you can start here. If you like what you read, you should consider checking out Badlands, Witchbane, Treasure Trail, or Fox Hollow Zodiac – where Imaginary Lover takes place. I’m planning on picking up at least one or two myself. 😉
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of Imaginary Lover. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Another great story added to the Beyond the Realm series. Imaginary Lover also links to Morgan's series, Fox Hollow but it's not necessary to have read that to enjoy/understand this book. We meet Cory as he comes to on a country road with absolutely no memory, battered and bruised with just a wallet in his pocket. Using instincts and smarts he finds his way to Fox Hollow and a psychic who may be able to help him. What he finds out about himself and his true life is beyond what he could have thought but also makes sense. Thus starts the battle to find and rescue his soulmate, Max. I really enjoyed the plot to this short story. Having liked Fox Hollow already, I loved getting to interact with those in town I already knew and they really rally round to help Cory and Max, using their combined powers and abilities to set their world to rights and also bring someone to justice. The plot flowed well and all of the characters interacted with ease, seamlessly working together. I felt Cory's stress, fear and determination to fight the wrongs done to them and rescue his partner but also the hope that sparked when someone spoke words that had things making sense to him since waking with no memory. Definitely a recommended read for fans of the series and Morgan's writing. I look forward to more from both series. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
Cory wakes up on the side of the road with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As he struggles to piece together what has happened he keeps having dreams involving a man. These dreams all tell him to remember his imaginary lover when he can’t even remember who he is himself. He finds himself in the town of Fox Hollow where hopefully he can get some answers. Once he arrives, he suddenly finds himself in the middle of a fight not only for his own life, but that of someone he desperately wishes he could remember.
Welcome to Fox Hollow! If you have read any other books by Morgan Brice you will find some characters you know and already love. This author is so good at creating memorable characters and weaving together some amazing stories. You don’t need any background though in order to love this one. I am such a huge fan of this genre and this author. Now this book is part of a larger series: Beyond the Realm. A bunch of different authors took one premise and each wrote a stand alone book set in their own worlds. This is a fascinating idea and one that I hope to see more of in the future. I highly recommend this book and go back and look up more books not only in this set but by Morgan Brice as well!
“Imaginary Lover” by Morgan Brice is part of the ‘Forgotten Realms: Remember’ series and features an amnesiac who fortuitously ends up in unique Fox Hollow, where he finds those willing to help him figure out who he is and who is the amazing person he has a sensual connection with. Time is running out to solve the mystery, and failure may be fatal.
This adult paranormal gay romance has intriguing elements such as shifters, witches, curses, and sizzlingly vivid dreams. I like that characters from some of this author’s other series have cameos because I love catching up on what folks are doing after their time in the spotlight ends. For some reason, this particular story didn’t resonate with me as much as I am used to with this author’s stories. Although the main character’s plight is scary and confusing, I connected better to many of the other characters, and I wasn’t thrilled by the emphasis on sex that seemed to be germane to the story, given its brevity. I think this gives an entertaining view of Fox Hollow and it will probably encourage readers to try “Huntsman” or some of the other series by this talented and prolific author.
I received this book as part of an ARC review. It is very engrossing. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Cory wakes up on the side of a road not knowing who he is. A voice or instinct guides him. The voice becomes an imaginary lover. Seeing a pamphlet for the Fox Institute in Fox Hollow, Cory makes an appointment with a psychic hoping to find out who he is. When he arrives in Fox Hollow, he gets a vision of his lover and a sense of time running out. He meets the psychic who brings in a witch, Isabel, and her coven to help break the curses on Cory. Jeffries takes Cory under his wing and puts him into the library cottage. The townspeople help as well. After the first part of the curse is broken, Cory starts to remember and Ben arrives looking for him saying that he and Max disappeared while on a hunt. It is revealed that Cory and Max put the fear of God into Liam's ex which they are thankful for. In a mix of magic including sex magic, potions, physical help and the power of being soul mates, Cory is able to retrieve Max from where he was banished. Along the way they capture the witch Livana who cursed Cory and Max as well as other crimes. I liked how the books are all tying in with each other.
Imaginary Lover is the 8th book in the multi-authored Beyond the Realm series. This story is written by author Morgan Brice. This story is very engaging. I did like the world-building and all the paranormals we meet. I did however have a hard time in a few places. This story feels to me like a movie already in progress. So, I would not say this book is standalone. The writing is great do not get me wrong. It is just the feeling of there is a huge something I am missing that really makes the story feels off for me.
Do I feel this story is a love story? Not really. It does have some elements to a love story, but it is more of a mystery, fantasy area for me.
We follow one character throughout this book. Cory. I loved how connected to him I felt, and the overall character is amazingly well done. I did like nothing is given away too fast in this book.
Overall, for me, this is a good well done for a one-time read. I felt slightly not overly but slightly lost and that would prevent me from wanting to read more from this series. I think the author did their job they did do a great story I just never fully got the entire storyline.
I like "Imaginary Lover", but I’m also pretty meh about it. The writing is solid. Cory and his lover’s predicament is sad, and he’s likable but not much else. Cory is pretty passive, and the story happens around him. It starts strong as he gets his bearings and displays subconscious behaviors that tell an interesting story about his life. Then an inkling leads him to Fox Hollow, aaaaand that’s all he does.
Everyone swoops in with food and answers, and he simply follows directions like he’s baking a dangerous, sexy cake. He’s a bit player to the cast from Fox Hollow. It’s understandable to a point as he does need the help, but even after his memory returns and his occupation revealed (though it’s an easy guess), he doesn’t do anything with it. His part in the action is to get rescued again of course.
I’m more interested in most of the secondary characters, many who clearly have their own books. There’s also no real tension bc everyone is town is so damn capable and knowledgeable. I’m not sure there was enough space for the townsfolk who are undoubtedly the MVPs and a supernatural amnesia story. Cory and his lover could be any forgettable characters from an episode of "Supernatural" that Sam and Dean come to save.
I adore both this author and the town of Fox Hollow they've created and am extremely pleased to be returning there. This story was full of magic, mystery, and the men who find love in the midst of it all. Light on steam, this was a romance based on story and discovery rather than merely lust.
This was a shorter story and it still felt quite complete for both the men coming together and the mystery that caused their circumstances. It was a really great read on its own, though I would recommend reading the rest of the Fox Hollow books as the townspeople carry more weight when you get a bit more of a chance to get to know them.
Both men are interesting on their own and when they come together you can see why they are meant to be, in addition to finding a family of choice with wonderful side characters. Even though the focus was on the story itself rather than the romance I felt a good balance was found and the story truly worked overall. A great addition to interesting series, both in Beyond the Realm and Fox Hollow Zodiac, Morgan Brice brings together paranormal and romance in a memorable way that makes me want more.
DNF @74%... yep, 74%. Sigh. I enjoyed a couple of the others in the Fox Hollow series and so want to get sucked into a big world/series of shifters and other paranormal creatures, but as I kept skimming and grumbling at the page I finally (finally!) realized: not this one. I think part of the problem for me is that the author seems to lean more heavily into urban fantasy than romance, so her stories are missing an engaging emotional connection between the main characters more often than not, and yet the urban fantasy plots are so predictable that they're not enough on their own to hold my interest when I don't really care about the men involved 😕 The "a-ha, it's time to throw in the towel" moment for me was when I realized that YET AGAIN - I think the third time in maybe twice as many books of hers that I've read? - the whole story happens without the main characters on page together (outside of dream/fantasy type moments, most of which are sex, and I'm sorry, I can maybe do one dream/jerk-off-while-imagining-him sec scene per series, IF it's both hot and advances the story, but give me multiple books worth of that shit and I'm out).
