Catfishing can be a deadly business, especially when social media mega-influencer Angela Fox has you in her sights.

When Angela Fox's Myface account is selected as Hottest User of the Month, there's only one problem: she isn't real. As the fake Angela takes the world by storm, a group of strangers struggle to escape a twisted web of narcissism, deceit, and revenge.

L.A. hotshot Sebastian Shafer is so desperate to get a job, he creates an elaborate plan to convince his future employer that, if hired, Sebastian's association with "Hollywood socialite" Angela Fox will bring in the sales. The only issue is he needs to convince the world that she actually exists.

Angela draws more attention than Sebastian anticipated when her profile gains millions of followers and fame seekers desperately try to catch her attention. But things really get out of control when a handsome young stage-play director winds up dead. The question is who pulled the trigger?

Myface is a novella of speculative satire showcasing the effect of the overuse of social media. There are a couple of things that seem to set it in the near future (for example, Myface is accessible in mirrors, which I don't think is a real thing yet), but the author is most definitely examining the present, which he makes quite clear by pop-culture references to aging songs like Jukebox Hero and movies like 2001. It's set in Los Angeles and centers on the drive to be noticed and look good through fair means or foul in order to succeed. It presents a good case for Dystopia being with us already and thriving in California. The characters aren't drawn or developed in any great depth, and I took their shallowness as a demonstration of the reason that Myface had thrived in the first place. I'm not a user of any social media (other than cataloguing books here, that is...does that count?), so I probably don't fit the target audience; I had to look up the phrase "catfishing" when I saw it in the book description. The story is snappy and interesting, though, and is a fast-paced and angsty study of a few characters who may be what they seem but aren't who they want to be. I thought the story was very well and cleverly written (except for a couple of awkward and unnecessary footnotes which could have been incorporated in the narrative), and the last paragraph was particularly poignant and capped the story perfectly. (The author sent me a copy to read and review, for which I'm grateful.)

This is a novella - a snapshot of life sometime in the future, in the USA, when social media seems to have taken over people's lives. Not exactly a great leap to take, given the way things are going.
Identity is such a fickle thing. New identities can be created easily, but just as easily destroyed.
This leads to a world where nobody seems to know the difference between reality and fantasy.
Perhaps it's no accident that the reader is also confused at times.
I also found it ironic that mirrors can become screens for Myface. Mirrors reflect things back, but people only see what they want to see. They are also easily broken, just as killing seems to happen at the drop of a hat in this world.
Who is real?
Who is speaking the truth?
Who just lives in Cloud Cuckoo (Myface) Land?
But most importantly - does it make them happy?
Thanks to Kevin and Pigeonhole for giving us this glimpse into the future.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review, and for that I thank both the author and the publisher.

This 144-page book has an interesting premise. It revolves around some very interesting, albeit mentally questionable characters, and a social media site called Myface.

Angela Fox's face is everywhere on Myface. She is the epitome of beauty, grace, and is even voted "The Hottest User of the Month" at one point. Followers wait on her every word and wonder how such a perfect creature has managed to stay out of the spotlight - until now on Myface.

But what if that perfect creature doesn't exist? What if she's a figment of someone's imagination? What happens then and how do you hide that from the general public when people are screaming to see her, be with her, have her attend their gala events, hire her, and on and on. Millions adore her. She is everyone's sweetheart, and notoriously secretive.

And then there's Sebastian, well known in the right L.A. circles, and in desperate need of employment to keep his style of living where he and his wife want it to be. This desperation leads him to convince a possible employer that he will be able to produce Angela Fox to help bring in the sales. The question becomes how will he do this when Angela isn't real? And what about that dead director?

There are a number of people who might want that director dead and their stories cross throughout this book, intersecting with Sebastian, his wife, a narcissistic man with a hoard of paid cameramen following him everywhere, and on and on.

None of these characters are particularly likeable and I don't think they are meant to be. Most are selfish, egotistic, and not above stepping on anyone to get up the ladder. So, who killed the director? The "actress" who wants to be in movies but who keeps landing roles in plays which help keep her and Sebastian's head slightly above water? Sebastian himself? Norman? The fictional Angela?

There are lots of head games being played in this book.

Couldn't put down

As a lover of the show Catfish, I had high expectations for this book. Yes, you have a fake social media profile where the person behind the profile is not the actual person. Then you have the washed up child star who is making a reality show about his life trying to get back into the spotlight, and who happens to be obsessed with this fake profile person. There is an awful lot thrown info this short book - love, deceit, affairs, law, money, murder - making this a powerful quick read without a lot of depth, but definitely a book you can't put down once you pick up.

I won this book in a Goodreads Giveaway.

From the blurb "When Angela Fox's Myface account is selected as Hottest User of the Month, there's only one problem: she isn't real. As the fake Angela takes the world by storm, a group of strangers struggle to escape a twisted web of narcissism, deceit, and revenge."
Myface by Kevin Landt is a frightening look at the hidden side of social media. An original story (at least I think it is) that grabbed me right from the start and kept me engaged to the very end. Well written and excellently paced, Myface is a short story that is filled with plenty to keep the readers in suspense. A fast read that carries quite the "PUNCH", it moves quickly and smoothly.
The author does a great job in a short amount of time to flesh out a great cast of characters that help greatly in moving the story forward.
The plot is relevant, creating interest and intrigue that is easy to read and follow along. Considering the world wide obsession with social media Kevin Landt couldn't have picked a better playground for this bit of psychological mayhem.
I enjoyed this very much and recommend it as a book that should be on the shelf of fans interested in a great read.

I'm torn on this one. I think some people with love this story, but I think it just wasn't for me. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't one to keep me wanting to read it. The characters were shallow and self centered and they didn't really do much for me. The story was definitely something that could be pulled out of todays obsessive social media era. Overall, the story wasn't terrible. There were quite a few characters in the mix, but it wasn't hard to follow.

It wasn't a long story so I don't feel like there was a lot of time for much character development. Out of all the characters I can't say that I really liked any of them except maybe Diego. With Diego, I really didn't get to know too much about it. Everyone else was just terrible.

The story was a bit about each person all reaching the final climax of the story. It was a bit predictable, but it wasn't terrible. I just didn't have any real connection to anyone in the story or the story as a whole.

Firstly, this is not a book I would normally read but I was intrigued by its take on how fake our society is and how effective and influential Social Media is.
This was about fake social media profiles where the person behind the profile is not the actual person and the disastrous effects this has on the real person's life. 3 Stars.

Landt’s excellent latest blends nail-biting action with a highly imaginative premise.

Struggling to get a job, L.A. hotshot Sebastian Shafer lies to his future employer about his association with “Hollywood socialite” Angela Fox. The only problem is she doesn’t exist. When Angela’s social media profile draws millions of followers, Sebastian finds himself in the middle of a sinister game of murder and conspiracy.

Landt sprinkles in enough twists and turns to make what could have been an over-the-top premise plausible. The dark side of social media, including the unhealthy engagement, devastating effect on personal relations, and the despairing need to maintain the personal brand which remains in danger of trashing is skillfully integrated into the plot.

Landt keeps the tension high and the reader guessing right up to the satisfying ending, while resolving every single plot twist.

Complex, deeply realized characters, expert pacing, and intelligent plotting make this a winner. An adrenaline high, nonstop thrill ride, this is an absolute page-turner.

Myface was a quick novella with lots of plot to get through in 100 or so pages. This novella definitely plunged into the action in the first pages. We are immediately introduced to a large cast of characters but unfortunately it didn't come with much character development.

I thought the look at how easily and quickly we can get sucked into a media outlet like Myface was interesting and accurate. How often do we get absorbed in someone's life without a real concept of who they actually are? As the reader sees here, it is definitely easy to be manipulated within the social media realm and that is perfect fodder for a thriller like this one.

Where this book fell short for me was in the character development. The book was all tell and no show. I felt nothing for the characters because they were very one dimensional and, for the most part, unlikable. I do realize it's hard to pack an emotional punch in 100 quick pages where you have a lot of plot going on.

I do think the author shows great promise for putting together a compelling popcorn thriller. I would be interested in reading a full novel from Kevin Landt in the future!

*Thank you to Goodreads and Kevin Landt for the free copy that I won in a giveaway!

An interesting and gripping story that kept me hooked.
It's well written, full of twists and turns, and I appreciated the character development and the world building.
It's the first book I read by this author and won't surely be the last.

This book is INSANE. totally reminds me of a social media driven black mirror episode. It is crazy how obsessed we are with social media and how we allow it to drive our lives. Literally this book revolves around an fictitious individual. Such a page turner. I could not put it down. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is different from what I usually read. Like, very different and although it probably won't land on my fave list I did enjoy it. It's a good example of how people can get sucked into social media until they don't even enjoy life anymore which I think is a serious problem. Everyone should do their best to be happy and most of the time social media do just the opposite. This book also portrays how the lives of celebrities and famous people aren't really as happy as most of us think they are and that they're really just people like us and that they usually have more problems than most us.

And to those of you who were wondering... This book mentions sex but there is nothing too graphic, there are a few curse words, and a gay couple (which didn't bother me but I like to put in anything that is different than what most books contain.)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In exchange for my honest review, I was provided with a copy of this book, and I would like to express my gratitude to the author. This 144-page novel presents an interesting reason, including a made-up online entertainment stage called Myface and a cast of complex, deranged characters. On Myface, Angela Fox's picture is all over the place. She addresses excellence and complexity in any event, acquiring the title of "The Most Smoking Client of the Month." Her adherents cling to all her posts, entranced by how somebody so wonderful figured out how to avoid the spotlight for such a long time. However, what if Angela Fox is fictitious? Imagine a scenario in which she is just a creation. What happens when reality takes a chance with openness, particularly when individuals are anxious to see her, welcome her to high-profile occasions, or recruit her? Angela is loved by millions yet stays a slippery figure. Enter Sebastian, a man very much associated with L.A., who frantically needs something important to keep up with his and his better half's sumptuous way of life. He convinces a potential employer, out of desperation, that he can deliver Angela Fox to increase sales. The issue? Angela is not real. And afterward, there's a killed chief to consider... The situation starts to get interesting as a trap of interconnected characters arises, each with potential thought processes in the chief's demise. There's Sebastian, his better half, a narcissistic man with a group of paid cameramen chasing after him, and a few others whose ways cross suddenly. These characters are not especially affable, and that appears to be purposeful. Most are self-involved, egotistical, and ready to stomp on over anybody to ascend the social stepping stool. Anyway, who is the genuine guilty party behind the chief's homicide? The entertainer who can't break out of theater jobs? Sebastian, the person? Norman? Or, on the other hand, even the imaginary Angela? The novel is loaded with mental games as each character explores this mind-boggling snare of trickery.

This book seemed intriguing and up my alley since I first laid eyes on it. Thats where it ended unfortunately.
I couldn't quite connect with the writing style, it was bizarre, unemotional and lacklustre.
I am always heartbroken when this happens with books I am so eager to read and love. This one was slightly off and just couldn't'' hold my interest. I ended up skimming the pages after failed attempts to LIKE EVEN A TEENY TINY BIT in here. With a heavy heart I put it out there, " I didn't like it.

The book cover is pretty though! The premise is also quite riveting and a pressing issue these days, so all my stars for the aforementioned!

I would still like to read more from the author as this was my first book and I feel its too soon to judge.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for giving me an e ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Love social media? Obsessed with scrolling through your insta feed or seeing how many likes your most recent tweet got? Then you need to read MyFace by Kevin Landt.

MyFace is one of those books you wish was longer. It works great as a novella. It’s a read you can get through in a couple of hours but it’s one that longers with you and you will want to pass on to and discuss with your friends.

It’s a gripping read, which we found really hard to put down. It takes you headfirst into the side of social media that we all know exists but we try not to think about. If you love watching Black Mirror than this is a novella you need to add to your to-read list.

It was a really fast read which is a good thing. I am really hooked throughout the whole thing until the mediocre ending

Myface is the social media which everyone is using in a somewhat high tech world in the book. It wasn't much different from facebook except that they have mirrors where u can call Myface and MyFace would appear to serve you

Angela Fox is the new winner user of MyFace but the thing is she is the plastic surgery version of one of the heroine I cant remember her name. Norman is this crazy child star who fell out of fame and is infatuated with Angela Fox and having hallucinations about her. The whole story is kinda crazy and very fast paced. But I feel like it happened too fast to not allow me to grow attached and learn more about the characters that the ending is very underwhelming

Thank you to the author and publisher for this Goodread Giveway! This book has a very interesting premise based on a fictitious social media platform called Myface. Although the premise was intriguing, the story was one-dimensional for me. None of the characters were very well developed, such that I never formed any kind of emotional attachment (neither positive nor negative) with any of them. Granted, this is challenging to do in a novella, but I continually felt like I was missing some of the backstory.

This book intrigued me with its look at how social media influences people ... not always in a positive way!
We have a highly influential "celebrity" who is a complete fabrication, a former-child-star who is desperate for a comeback as an adult, a frustrated actress who is waiting for her "big break" & several more people who aren't quite what they seem!
It is set in the future, but not the distant sci-fi future, a future that could be just months away. A future where social media seems even more pervasive than today. A future where reality and fantasy are ever more merged and truth is not quite so differentiated ... its very believable and slightly frightening to see how quickly this could become reality.
It's a novella/short read but fast paced with plenty of twists and turns and a surprising amount of plot development & character development in such a short book. There are moments when the reader is slightly confused as to what is actually happening & what is being dreamed - but that mirrors the confusion between reality & fantasy!

Overall, this is an unusual and inventive book, which does make you think about the influence of social media. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Disclosure: I received an early copy of this book free via ThePigeonHoleHQ & had an opportunity to offer feedback to the author & review a second copy after editing. Whilst thanks go to the author, publisher & @ThePigeonHoleHQ for the opportunity to review it, all opinions are my own.

Myface is an addictive, though at times, confusing read. I found the concept to be very intriguing, and the author Kevin Landt did well to develop the plot and characters in this novella.

It makes some important points regarding social media, its dangers and how its so easy to become consumed by it to the extent that it is difficult to understand what is real, fabricated and essential in life. The characters are unlikeable, vacuous and obnoxious (probably intentionally) but this serves to add greater surrealness to the tale.

If you're looking for a very quick, compelling and oddly powerful read then Myface could well be a good fit for you.

I read Myface in staves with other Pigeonholers as part of a group. A special thank you to Kevin Landt and The Pigeonhole for a complimentary copy of this novel at my request. This review is my unbiased opinion.

This is a novella about the dangers of social media. It's full of vapid characters who have no idea what is reality and what is important in life.

I liked the concept of this book and can definitely see that there are people now so consumed by social media that all they care about is how many likes and followers they have. However the timeline of the story jumps forward several times which made everything a little confusing. I was left wondering how we got to this point in time and what happened to bring us here. I feel it this was a longer book the plot and characters would have the space to develop and we would understand their motivations better.

Be careful what you wish for truly sums up the premise and conclusion of this book. I won the kindle edition from a Goodreads giveaway and I’m glad I won. Generally, I don’t prefer novellas because sometimes I feel it’s hard to complete a very detailed story in less than 120 pages, but the author managed to create numerous interesting characters and fill the pages with intrigue and my favorite, twists. It portrays just how much social media affects lives and how people can become so obsessed with it. It was a very quick read. Thumbs up!

This was in some ways interesting. The writing was I can't really describe..... It was interesting the way this was written. I liked how this was written through different POVs.
But I didn't care for this book. It was wonky.
This was for sure a fast paced read. I finished in just a few hours.
I found myself skimming through some parts.
I just thought this was going to be something entirely different.

Overall-- Ok Book

2.5 stars probably.

I read this on Pigeonhole, and I'm not sure if that meant that the formatting is off, or if it is meant to be laid out like it was. If it IS meant like that, then it was incredibly hard to keep track of where I was and what was happening.

It is like reading a Black Mirror episode, which I actually think would have worked better. It was a concept that really needed the visuals.

So, I liked the plot and concept, but not the execution....

Sorry this book just wasn’t for me. It jumped all over the place and mixed reality with fantasy which just confused me. I struggled to follow it. None of the characters were likeable but I think that was maybe the intention to show the control social media can have over people! Was scary seeing this side of how peoples lives can be taken over by it.
