I don't know what my deal is?
This is one of those 'shake my head at myself' times.
It's weird because...I really really like this trio of besties and haven't been able to resist continuing on with this series as it has evolved but I'm not the biggest fan of its delivery.
it is possible to like characters but not really enjoy the writing?
Hmmm?
If I'm flat out honest, I think that's what it is.
I LOVED Leo and wanted his HEA but man o' man, getting there wasn't easy for me.
Lots of little things niggled me but I kept trudging along...hoping for the best.
I did enjoy the ending.
It was nice seeing the other couples.
But the third time of 'it was okay' should be a giant clue.
Good luck Single Dads, I bid you adieu.

I think it's time die me to give up on this series. While the first two books were mildly pleasant if forgettable, Promise didn't hold my interest. It's through sheer force of will that I didn't DNF.

The story doesn't begin at the beginning. I remember Jason, the ex-con, from the second book, but there was nothing about him and Leo getting together. In the first chapter, Leo muses about how he and Jason kissed and Jason disappeared. This was so odd, I actually skipped back to make sure I didn't miss a prologue but nope, none of that happens on page.

On top of that, Jason is a supremely unlikable dude: defensive, secretive, hesitant to be with Leo even in the last chapter prior to the epilogue. I just don't get what Leo saw in him.

The suspense plotline was so ridiculous, I was mentally rolling my eyes. The epilogue was sweet, but I never connected with the MCs and found the story to be disjointed and uninspired.

I loved this book so much. It was the one I'd been waiting for right since we were first introduced to this set of best friends and emergency service personnel and RJ didn't disappoint at all.

Leo and Jason made my heart happy and I absolutely adored Daisy, a precocious almost four-year-old who we are introduced to almost immediately when Jason appears looking for help from firefighter Eric whose life he saved while working as a convict fireman.

I won't spoil the plot, but suffice it to say, that watching these two radically different but utterly determined men fall in love was a delight.

I'm seriously pleased that the series isn't over though and I'm very much looking forward now to finding out more about the rest of the characters RJ is introducing us to in more detail.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review

Why trying out ?
* When in need of a sweet and fluffy romance, with 2 likable MCs raising kids,
* When a fan of RJ Scott,
* For those who enjoyed following this "Single Dads" series and this trio of friends (Sean, the doctor, Eric, the firefighter and finally Leo, the cop and favorite “uncle” of his friends’ kids) each founding their love partner. And good to know, there might be more in this sweet series when it comes to side characters.

Yes, it can be technically to be read as a standalone, but it’s advisable to at least read book #2 before imo. I did remember about Jason, a con-man who saved Eric’s life during a fire, something that Sean and Leo were grateful for, especially Leo, intrigued by Jason. No wonder then did he try to know a little bit more about that man and steps in when Jason shows up all battered (physically and emotionally) with a little girl in his arms.

It’s full of tender feelings between Leo, abused when a kid and rescued by his loving adopting family, and Jason, doing whatever he can to take responsibilities for his past mistakes and taking care of his daughter he finally gets to know now that he's out of jail. It’s low-angst despite Jason being pursued by criminals and It’s very, very low on steam, my only complaint. But as usual with RJ Scott, I got my mellow read. It’s like settling down for a nice moment with a cup of warm chocolate, Leo’s favorite break.

1.5 stars not rounded up because well, this wasn't really a pleasant read for me.

How do you write a review of a book that you really didn't care for without it being overly negative? Well I don't know, but here's for trying.

There wasn't much I liked about this book, which you probably already have figured out, huh? It's barely 200 pages long but it felt soooooo much longer. For the first 50% or so we just went on and on and on in circles, not really knowing what was happening because Jason wouldn't tell Leo or the reader anything. It got annoying really fast. I didn't end up having much patience for Jason after that and man, I would've needed it. I can't help feeling Leo could've done better.

A little less violence would have been nice as well, don't be fooled by the cover. This is not a fluffy read.

The best part of this book was seeing Sean and Ash again, the couple from the first book.

Re-read Nov. 12, 2024

In San Diego, tension and angst, anticipation and heart, a mystery and thriller, all mixed into this serious, "almost a," Christmas story. A really bad guy, the terrific guys, the cops, an ex-con, and his daughter, a sweet 4 yr. old girl.

Jason and Daisy are on the run, while Daisy's mom is in a coma, and the abusive man is after them. There is money to be extorted from Daisy's grandfather. They end up at a safe place, with Leo

and his dog, Cap,

Leo knows Jason and part of his past.

The characters are realistic, we have banter with the bothers, but we also get deep inner thoughts, and they are in survivor's mode, and fearful. Leo is a strong cop, on leave with an injury, who has an awesome family and friends. We get the back stories and like the men even more. The threat looms, the men kiss, a lot, and the temporary safety is a blessing, plus gives our men a bit more time together.

The culmination gives us lots of answers.
The fabulous writing of R. J. Scott gives us a memorable tale with an HEA.
ENJOY !

A Joyfully Jay review.

I’ve been with the Single Dads series from the beginning and have been enjoying them. This third installment is a good one, but I feel it sort of missed the mark a little for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still enjoyable with the same great character development and stories I’ve become used to. However, Promise dragged a bit for me. The concept is solid. Jason’s on the run with this little girl…a little girl he barely knows. Someone’s trying to kill him and take Daisy. He needs help, and he needs it badly. He just doesn’t seem to be willing to accept it from Leo. I get that. I totally do. To me, though, Jason winds up coming off like a martyr, and the “We’re going to leave. You can’t keep us here” thing started to get a little repetitive. I felt myself becoming frustrated with Jason, and I didn’t want that because I know, deep down, Jason’s a good man who only wants best for his daughter.

Third in the series. This felt uneven at times, though I loved Jason and how strong he was, even if he didn't believe it. Liked Leo well enough, but he was a little hot-headed at times. For reasons, but still.

Enjoyable overall. Daisy was adorable.

nothing like binging a cute romance at night, tbh. i usually don't expect much from adult romance novels but i really enjoyed this one!

i laughed out loud and i teared up and i loved seeing the boys from the other books. it wasn't perfect but it was a good read, exactly the dose of fluff i needed.

Way angstier than the previous too, it almost didn't feel like they were the same series. But I still liked it enough and I want to continue the series whenever the next book comes out.

This is my second time around with this story...

When the book came out back in November of last year I was happily there with my grabby hands to get a copy and now here we are less than a year later and the audio book is out and once again with Sean Crisden as the narrator, needless to say I was once again there with my grabby hands wanting to revisit this story.

Leo’s not a new to me character since he’s been in this series since the beginning and along with the rest of us he’s watched his roommates Sean and Eric find their happily ever after but ready or not it’s Leo’s turn to find that special someone.

When Leo acted on impulse and kissed Jason and then fled from the men’s room at the awards banquet honoring Jason for saving Eric’s life while battling fires in the California grasslands. He may not have broken Jason’s heart, but his parting words left Jason feeling angry and confused. It’s not until Jason shows up on Leo’s door looking for Eric’s help that both men are forced to confront the feelings they’ve been suppressing.

Things might have been a whole lot easier for these two if all they had to deal with was that one errant kiss but Leo’s past has left him with demons that haunt his dreams even after all these years and Jason’s demons aren’t haunting him…they’re hunting him and if he wants to keep his daughter safe he needs to stay one step ahead of them and maybe…just maybe…like it or not with Leo’s help he can do that.

Just like when I read the stories, I’m a fan of all 3 of the couples that we’ve met so far. Each pairing has been uniquely endearing, and I’ve enjoyed everyone of these stories. I loved getting a closer look at the people who helped Leo to become the honorable man that he is. Just as much as I enjoyed finding out why Jason was in the situation that he was. When we met him back in Eric’s story I felt like there was more to him than we were seeing and here in “Promise” we’re giving all of his story as well.

Sean Crisden is one of those narrators that I enjoy listening to without fail. I have a list of audiobooks that for me are like comfort food no matter how much of a book slump I’m in, I just pick a book or two from my list and before I know it I’m back on track and there are more than a couple of books on that list that he’s narrated. So, I knew without hesitation that I’d enjoy the narration for this book and I was right as always I thoroughly enjoyed the expressiveness of the characters and the emotional depth that the narrator gave to each of them.

Each of the stories in this series has the common thread of single dads but while they have single dads in common that’s where the similarities have ended and each story has given us fresh and unique individuals that have their own story to share with the reader and I’m looking forward to finding out not just who’s next but what their story is.

Darum geht's:

Meine Meinung dazu gibt’s hier

A bit plain and predictable. Nothing really happens ?¿

Jason arrives hurt and with his daughter so Leo decides to let them stay at his house. Gradually we know a bit why is Jason there and of course they fall in love, but is pretty much Insta and that's my kryptonite :/

I’m very possibly becoming addicted to this author’s stories...

It seems whenever I see a story with her name attached, I’m right there with my grabbie, gimmie hands to get a copy to read and I have yet to be disappointed.

“Promise” is the third book in Ms Scott’s ‘Single Dads’ series. This is Leo and Jason’s story. We met Leo for the first time in “Single” book #1 of this series and now that his roommates Sean and Eric have each gotten their HEA, it’s Leo’s turn and who better for a cop to fall for, than an ex-con who seems to have more than a couple of secrets.

We met Jason in “Today” book #2, when he saved Eric’s life. When Jason shows up on Leo’s doorstep looking for Eric after his release from prison. Eric’s told him if he ever needed help he could come to him and when Leo sees Jason tired, beaten, ready to drop in his tracks and holding on for all he’s worth to a sweet little girl that he says is his daughter Leo couldn’t imagine someone more in need of help and despite the caution that his instincts are telling him to exercise…Leo’s quickly becomes determined to protect Jason…consequences be damned.

I’ve liked Leo from the beginning of this series and with this book we get an even closer look at this character. Leo’s past isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, he’s got demons of his own that are driving him and as he becomes more and more involved with Jason, he’s forced to confront the past that he’s kept diligently locked away.

Both men are more than a little bit aware of the attraction they share for each other, and for their own reasons they are equally determined to deny it at first. But as Jason’s secrets come to light, Leo begins to see that Jason isn’t what he seems to be and that his story is more complex than any of them realized.

I’ve enjoyed all of the stories in this series and this is probably one of the few times that I can honestly say when it comes to a favorite pairing, at this point in the series, I’m hard pressed to say that I have one. So far, I’ve found each couple to hold their own unique appeal for me.

I loved watching Leo and Jason try to resist the inevitable, these two men just worked the chemistry was right and as if that wasn’t enough there was Daisy…Jason’s adorable 3…going on 4 year old daughter who not only wormed her way into Leo’s heart without even trying but found a spot in mine as well.

This story also gave us a bit more of a glimpse into the family that helped to make Leo the man that he is and that was fun. I love stories that have those over the top, in your face, gregarious families and Leo’s family is one that I’d definitely like to see more of.

I had thought maybe since this all started with 3 roommates…Sean, Eric and Leo that this story just might be the end of things but this is not the case and I’m so pleased to know that there are more ‘Single Dads’ to come.

Recensione a cura di Cleo per Feel the Book

Voto 3,5

Dual first-person POVs.
Possible triggers: Substance abuse, physical violence.

Jason is an ex-con but a good guy at heart. There's a reason he pled guilty without a fight a few years ago. And there's a reason he's turned up bloody and beaten, looking for Eric.
Leo's cop instincts war with his bond of friendship and loyalty towards Eric and Jason *did* save Eric's life so Leo does owe him in return. Doing what's best for Daisy, the little girl that Jason is fiercely protective of, is his priority. Luckily, being on leave with a broken leg affords him the opportunity to house Jason and Daisy until Eric returns from the latest fires.
From the opening chapters, I kind of expected a little more suspense and drama but the plot unfolded slowly as Daisy became more outgoing, Jason started trusting Leo, and Leo started giving in to his feelings. Cap is sweet and patient as always. Sean, Ash, Mia, Brady, and Eric are minor secondary characters [this one can be read as a stand-alone, but for maximum appreciation, it would be best to read them in the order in which they were released.] Leo's family and a few other characters make up the secondary cast.
Conflicts are mostly met head-on with good communication. The ending is solid and enjoyable.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

¸.•´¸★*´¨) ¸.•*¨)
(¸.★¨*.¸¸.•`★¤Couldn't wait, so got this on my own.¤★¨*.¸¸.*ˑ˞★

Leo Byrne is a cop, Jason Banks is an ex-con. Even after one stolen kiss, something has to give before Leo can convince Jason that falling in love is even an option.

Leo was a cop, Jason an ex-con, so starts the backstory of R.J. Scott's highly anticipated [at least for me as I was waiting for this] third book in the Single Dads series, Promise. Leo was introduced early in the series, being best friend and roommates to emergency room doctor Sean from Single and firefighter Eric, from Today.

I ended my previous review stating that: "Oh, I enjoyed this story and look forward to book three, Promise, coming later this year. I cannot wait for Leo to get his just desserts." And, boy did he, as he was immediately drawn to Jason and could not seem to forget about the man or the kiss they'd shared. R.J. made the men's relationship based on what happened following the kiss and Jason's reappearance and the need for protection.

There was a subtle connection between the two men and there was a low key chemistry that they played upon. If you are a fan of slow burn books, this one will be a good fit for you. The secondary characters added meat to the bones of the book, but it was little Daisy and Cap the dog who added substance. I really enjoyed the plot-line and found the ending to summarize the entire book.

So far I’ve really enjoyed this series, but this time I’m disappointed.

One issue is that 50% in, Jason still hadn’t informed Leo (or readers) of exactly what’s going on. Who knew so many pages could be taken up by so many words that say nothing? He just kept spinning his same worries over and over again from a different angle. In fact, I was leaning toward not liking him at all when he finally revealed all his truths at around 68% and won me over. And Leo was nice, but he didn’t come across as nice in the beginning of this story as he had in his supporting role in the other books, so he, too, was difficult to warm up to. I wouldn’t mention the editing, but it’s obvious that this ARC is a rough draft. Not only are there spelling errors and missing words but there are several plot inconsistencies. Hopefully, the final copy for purchase will be cleaner.

By the last third of the book, it was evident that both men were ready to talk and be honest with each other. But, once they did, they were ready for a relationship. I may be in the minority here, but this came across as insta-love to me because they’d had so many misunderstandings and then suddenly they like each other and next thing is the I-love-you statements.

So, if you like stories of men running from mob bosses or bad guys in general, daddies protecting their kids, cops who are torn between love and acting like a cop, and—this is a must—if you like angst, you’ll like this story for sure.

I'm so disappointed in this book. Filled with so many errors.... *sigh* Not only missing words, extra words, a non-American phrasing that made me question what country he's in, oddly constructed sentences.... but the final straw for me was the "broken tibia in the mid thigh". UGH!! The tibia is not in the thigh at all!! The femur is the only bone in the thigh!! All this in just the first few pages. *sigh*. DNFd

Reading books like this are hard sometimes, because I’m a mom. And like Jason, in this story, I would do anything to protect her. Even die, if need be. Although I pray that never happens. But it’s hard when we see children stuck in situations they have no business being in. And when someone tries to save them, the bad people keep showing up to make it worse. But in this one, there’s hope. Even if he had to find it in someone who he thought found him disgusting. Little did Jason know, he had it all wrong.
After that kiss in the hospital, Leo hasn’t gotten over Jason. He’s looked high and low for that man, but can’t find him. Until one day, Jason shows up battered and beaten down, with a little girl gripped tightly in his arms, begging for Eric, for help. Leo is prepared to do anything to get Jason to stay so he can help, but Jason doesn’t trust Leo right now because of that kiss and what was said. He just knows he has to get to Eric for help. But Eric is gone and Sean and Leo are doing everything possible to keep Jason calm for Daisy and himself and to know he’s safe. But Jason knows he’s not fully safe yet. Not after what he just ran from. And everyone seems to want something from him, and it’s not turning out good. All he wants is a safe home for him and Daisy, and with how it’s looking, he’s going to actually have to let his walls down and trust that Leo has their best interests at heart and will take care of them and keep them safe. But that’s what scares him even more.
Be warned, this book deals with drugs, abuse and attempted murder on several counts. If it’s a trigger, be careful. It is a good book. It’s just hard, like I said earlier, because there’s a kid involved. And she’s just one that melts even the hardest of hearts. Well, unless their assholes. Between Jason and Daisy and even Leo, it’s a toss up who your heart breaks more for. Daisy for hearing or seeing a bit of what was happening, Jason for having to go through it all, and Leo for his past and for what’s going on, bringing it back to light. It’s hard on all of them. Many sleepless nights for the boys. I really love these guys. They need each other so much, it’s insane. But miscommunication always seems to be a factor. And foot in mouth seems to be a contagious disease ;) . But one thing they had with each other, was hope. When they finally gave in and let their guards down. It doesn’t mean the bad goes away. It doesn’t mean life isn’t hard. Leo is a cop after all, and all of them have had hard lives. And they all have to have their version of therapy when it gets too much. But they hope. And strive to keep going another day. And that’s what matters.
They don’t give up. It’s been a really good series. I’m happy to see these three goofballs have found their happiness and are growing in their lives. It’s hard work and there are always uphill moments, but they take it a day at a time, say a little prayer, cross some fingers, and encourage each other they have so much to live for and fight for another day.

not my fav

3 stars

I thought the series was looking up after liking the previous book so much but this one didn’t work for me the same. I enjoyed parts of this but as a whole it could have been better and I think that is because I just didn’t like Leo or Jason which was disappointing as I liked both of them when seen previously.

I understood Jason’s reluctance to talk about what was happening but it very much hindered the relationship going forward and Leo just flat out annoyed me. The book took till after the half way mark to pick up the pace and I finally became invested, it I don’t buy the relationship between the guys

I did like Daisy and loved how both men were with her.

Oooh, single dads, how I love you!

So, if you’re jumping into book three, then I’ll assume you’ve read books one (the doctor) and two (the firefighter) and now this one, best friend/roommate/chosen family of the others, Leo (the cop). In saying that, I loved the other stories but I didn’t so much remember the situation between Leo and Jason, (the cop and the convict) that happened the last book. It gets brought up in this one, a lot, so I suppose I should’ve gone back and had a refresh, I didn’t feel like I needed to with as often as it was brought up…..So, I don’t necessarily remember what happened, but apparently, Jason and Leo shared a kiss in what Jason thinks was gratitude and afterward Leo regretted it. Instead of talking about it like adults, it was a pretty big misunderstanding that lasted half the book… however, it also took a backseat to the real problems, which is where this book begins.

While Sean has been busy at the hospital and Eric is away, fighting the wildfires in California, Jason, who you should remember from last book, who was running and hiding with his almost-four-year-old daughter (you will be reminded of this a lot), and he helped save Eric… who told Jason that if he ever needed help, to come find him…which he does… beaten up, exhausted from running, broke and just broken.. he’s gotta keep fighting to keep his daughter safe, but he doesn’t know who to trust.

Working with the FBI who hasn’t done a whole lot to keep them safe and Daisy’s mother in a coma from the guy he’s currently running from, Jason has no choice but to go to Eric and hope he’ll help them. Not counting on Eric not being there, he runs into Leo, Eric’s friend/neighbor/old roommate/chosen brother, and him being a cop is the last thing he needs, because remember, law enforcement hasn’t been able to keep them safe up until then… and the kiss they shared, it left things awkward and misunderstood on Jason’s part.

Leo takes one look at Jason and his daughter and his instincts to turn him in are strong, but Jason asks him to trust him and to give him a little bit of time. Seeing that he’s about to drop and is in no shape okay to take care of his little girl, he gives them someplace to settle until they can figure out what they need to do… of course, Leo hasn’t been able to get Jason out of his head since the kiss, and Jason thinks that Leo couldn’t possibly want him because he’s a cop and Jason’s a criminal….two sides of very different coins, eh?

It bugged me that everything was so secretive for so long, when Leo was doing everything he could to get Jason to trust him. What he’d done wasn’t even that bad and it would’ve made so much more sense for Jason to tell him what was going on so he could help. He needed someone to help him so badly, and here was Leo begging to help and Jason wouldn’t let him. I wanted to shake him so many times, but I understood that he has a child that he had to put first and things hadn’t gone his way when he’d trusted before. So, understandable to a point, but still frustrating. While staying with Leo, both Daisy and Jason learned to trust Leo and it was cute to watch them both warm up to him, especially when Leo was done letting Jason hide from him…. Hello, hot toppy cop. Bonus!

Another thing I loved was Leo’s faith and the way he talked to God. Now, it’s not a big part of the story, but it also kind of is. As most LGBT+ stories kind of shun the community and ruin relationships and self-worth, I loved that Leo not only still believed in God and had faith in Him, but also used it in everyday his everyday life and didn’t think twice about it. He has a great family, too, an adopted one that didn’t care if he was LGBT++++++ or any letter that it might entail. They encouraged him to be who he is and they loved him no matter what. I love love loved that! Great seeing it in a same-sex read. (at least to me)

Overall, I enjoyed the trope…. the guy on the run who ends up with the cop who keeps him safe… I love the single dad, the cute kids, the awesome family and slow burn, as it took Jason a while to trust Leo… so, it was a very cute read if you don’t mind some things being repetitive. This will always be a sweet series for me and I’m so glad that Leo got his HEA and that Jason and Daisy were safe and accepted into the growing family of men in uniforms and their partners and babies.

I can’t wait to see who’s next!

Another great addition to the series.

I have loved each book in this series but this one really tore me apart before it put me back together again. Ever since I read Today, I've really wanted to know Jason's story. I've wanted to know Leo's, too but I just knew there would be something intriguing about Jason.

Promise is the third book in the Single Dads series. While you could read it as a standalone, I really think you should read books 1 and 2 to get the full enjoyment of all of the characters. Book 1 is about Ash and Sean, book 2 is about Eric and Brady and now, book 3 is about Leo and Jason. Sean, Eric and Leo are buddies who live together until they each find their love-match. Jason helps to save Eric's life in book 2.

The blurb gives you all the details of the story but it can't tell you the depth of Jason's feelings for his daughter, Daisy and, eventually, Leo. RJ's wonderful words on the page conjure up all the feels that this story deserves. Jason needs help, and he needs to learn to trust Leo, but it's hard. Leo knows that Jason isn't telling him everything but he's trying to be patient. His cop instincts warn him not to trust Jason but his heart tells him something else.

There isn't a lot of complicated plot in this story, or a lot of hot sexy time, but it isn't needed. What's important are the relationships between all of the characters and how they come together to help each other.

Another reason this story really resonated with me is the dedication. RJ Scott's dog, Jack, crossed over the rainbow bridge about a month before my beloved Buttons did. Cap, the dog in this and the other Single Dad books, is based on Jack. Just reading RJ's heartfelt dedication brings tears to my eyes. Cap gets lots of well-deserved mentions in Promise.

I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.

A copy of this book was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the third book in the series, and concentrates on Leo, the last of the friends left in their joint house. Sean and Eric have both found their HEAs and now Leo lives with his dog Cap, and regular visits with the new families. Having just broken his leg in the line of duty, he is currently stuck at home and bored.

His life is about to change forever though, as Jason, who saved Eric's life, turns up on the doorstep with his young daughter, Daisy. I found Jason's story was revealed to us in the most fabulous way. It was after all difficult to think badly of the man given he was a hero, but as we learn why he ended up in prison, what he has done to save his child and her mother, we can only be in awe. I really enjoyed the layers being pulled away, and perhaps most of all, that Leo falls for him unknowing of his reasons, and accepting of his past. There is a lot of fun to be had with Daisy in the house, although we get to find out just how traumatic her past has been, and can only admire her resilience.

All of these books have been great, so I am wondering whether I liked it best of all because it is the most recent I have read, but certainly it is a lovely, loving and passionate story. I highly recommend it to you.
