A gay virgin story, my holy grail. Praise thee who creates delicious stories of men discovering the joys of gay sex. Forever and ever, amen.
When I saw the blurb for this story, I was ALL OVER IT. I get crazy when I see a story that falls into the GFY/OFY umbrella! This is certainly an out-for-you story, or maybe a gay discovery story, or a "face the facts" kind of story. Either way, I'm a Neanderthal when it comes to these kinds of reads. I get all drooly and happy.
But just because I like the idea behind something, doesn't mean it's an automatic home run. The author still has to execute. It just so happens that Tara Lain did just that. The author created a loveable, believable, squee-worthy story that I think most readers will adore.
First of all, who wouldn't love the combo of a construction worker and a stylist? I love a good opposites-attract story! Also, I always enjoy when we see a MC that is a little more on the effeminate side. I liked how Shaz wasn't another burly guy. I like some hip swaying and some snazzy dressers in my stories! It was a sweet combo, and I immediately GOT the chemistry between Shaz and Billy.
My one complaint, and it sort of irked me more and more over time, was the cheesy dialogue during the sex scenes. First-timer sex can be so HOTTTTT (extra Ts needed!), and I feel like some of that oomph was taken away by the strange chatter during nooky time.
Still an easy, surprisingly low angst read that was JUST what the doctor ordered. I'd read more in this series any day of the week!

If you're looking for a low angst, feel good, sweet, and sexy story, look no further!
I LOVED Shaz of the snazzy clothes, flowing red hair, kimonos, and unicorn earrings. Shaz sparkles! He is "his own holiday ... Christmas and the Fourth of July rolled into one."

And burly construction worker Billy, who's been supporting his (rather ungrateful) family for years, loves his two (gay) kitties, and has a knack for interior design?
Yes, Billy is clueless and swimming in the ocean of denial, but he is a good guy, and I loved the way he treated Shaz.
See Gigi's awesome review for a drool-worthy Billy in a suit (her Shaz isn't half-bad either).
The chemistry between the MCs is palpable from the moment they meet. The dual POV really worked for me, as did the hawt-as-sin sex scenes.
Billy is so naive in so many ways, but his unbridled excitement at FINALLY discovering great clothes, sexual compatibility, AND mind-blowing orgasms is adorable.
The knight and princess theme could have gone way wrong, but it actually works in this book.
Shaz has yearned for a man he could trust and finds just that in Billy, his blue-collar knight who fits in his life far better than Billy could imagine.
The secondary characters in this book are well sketched and add to the story:
- Shaz's best friend and colleague, Ru, who's supportive and who will get his own story (*fist pump*)
- Billy's sisters, Rhonda and Teresa (she's the best one!), as well as his imperious mother (I did not like this woman, although she got better as the book progressed)
- Billy's construction buddies, especially Jim, who are much more accepting than Billy expects
- Shaz's supportive team of stylists
- Shaz's slimy boyfriend (but not for long!), Giles
- Billy's "date" Sissy who turns out to be kind of awesome and not a rich bitch at all
The only thing I found odd was Rhonda and Mitch's wedding, as well as Giles', um, involvement in the situation. That did not turn out the way I thought it would, and the "resolution" seemed to go against the grain of the book.
But that's really a minor detail. This is a highly enjoyable, funny, light read.
Plus, Shaz's unorthodox method of helping Billy study for his contractor's exam was just ... Well, fuck, I was undone.
I can't wait for the next book in the series!

Re-read January, 2017: I've gotten very picky about gay men fighting their homosexuality by getting backroom blowjobs from men while dating women. I still liked this, but knocked off a star for slight irritation.
I feel very fortunate that I enjoy such a wide variety of M/M romance fiction. Some favorites include firefighters, law enforcement, BDSM, M/M couples with children, military boys, hockey boys and hurt/healing/comfort. (I have so much to choose from!) But there is a special place in my heart for your basic, straight forward M/M romance which feature protagonists who are regular, good, honest, decent folks who overcome great obstacles to reach their entirely well-deserved HEA. Knight of Ocean Avenue will go down as one of these special books for me.
MC Billy Ballew is a incredibly hard working construction worker with a heart of gold. He gives half of his salary to his parents, after his dad suffered a heart attack and could no longer work. He helped put his sister through college. He coaches a little league team because he feels it's important to have a safe place for children to explore their interests without the fear of bullying and he always shows up for the family dinner at his parent's place every Sunday. He also has two cats which he absolutely adores, which just clinched the deal for me. Just a regular guy that anyone would love. And, boy, did I fall for him! On top of his personally-plus persona, he is a hulking 6'5" of gorgeous man meat.
MC Chase "Shaz" Phillips is a professional stylist. He owns his own business where he treats his employees like family, usually thinking of their welfare before his own. After being thrown out by his biological family at the tender age of 16 for being gay, he has worked hard to make a place for himself in this world. He is extremely flamboyant and makes absolutely no excuses for his exaggerated homosexuality. He has been looking for his heroic Knight to rescue his from the proverbial tower since he first realized he was gay. He finds that Knight in Billy.
This story was a absolutely enchanting journey of Billy discovering his true sexually at the age of 25 and how he and Shaz meet and fall in love. The warm-fuzzies will be slapping you in the face at every turn and I found myself with a huge, silly grin on my face many, many times as I read this. Incredibly low angst, this is a perfect book for anyone who needs an easy, feel-good book to pull them out of a crappy mood. Bonus points for the hot sex!!
I can HIGHLY RECOMMEND Knight of Ocean Avenue to each and every one of my GR friends and to all lovers of M/M romance. The only thing missing was an epilogue, but author Tara Lain has a sequel Knave of Broken Hearts in the works featuring Billy's good friend Joe, so I know we will see this boys again.
P.S. 3 cheers for all gay cats!

BR with Dani girl who reads at the speed of light and I hope to catch up
What a fresh, beautiful story that had all the potential to be hella angsty, but thankfully, wasn't
Shaz
I haven't read many books from miss Lain (which I'm about to remedy), but I know this : she is amazing at creating effeminate characters. With Shaz, she nailed it! Stylist, out and proud, he turns to be exactly what Billy needs. Someone that accepts him for who he is and has faith in what he can do , no pressure, no expectations. (And why didn't I know he is a flaming ginger?)

Oh man, I loved this guy. He is a gentle giant. His low self esteem, the fact that he doesn't know how gorgeous he is, his sensitivity, his instinct to protect everyone who is in danger...all these made him adorable and irresistible to me.
But, I have to say I didn't believe for a second that he hadn't figured out his sexuality. Poor guy was so much in denial, that when he sees Shaz for the first time he feels like he is struck by lightning.
There were just two things that didn't make much sense to me.
One, the storyline with Billy's sister and her fiance Mitch, for which I won't say more because I don't want to spoil.You 'll figure it out pretty early.
Second, I felt that people's reactions when Billy came out were not that realistic.
The sex scenes were scorching hot and I totally believed in their love and the HEA. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. Highly recommended for those who need to decompress and enjoy an easy, funny, steamy romance

How can you be twenty-five and not know you’re gay?
Poor Billy Ballew! I spent the whole book just wanting to hug him. He had no clue what was "wrong" with him.
He didn't understand why he couldn't keep a woman? Why his apartment was better decorated than half of Laguna? Why he didn't like going out with the guys?
None of those things were clues for Billy. No, it wasn't until he met Shaz (aka Chase Phillips). The OTT stylist with the flaming red hair, the unicorn earrings and the hot pink pants. Then Billy knew he was gay!
I'll admit I don't necessarily gravitate towards reading about the more feminine gay guys. But I enjoyed Loving Jay and a few others so I kept an open mind.
Shaz was....
He was outrageous and loud and proud. He wore his heart on his sleeve. He was just looking for his knight. Someone to rescue him. To love him.
I really loved both Billy and Shaz hard.
Was this one completely realistic? NO! But I could appreciate the simplicity of their love story. It was so sweet to watch.
Highly recommend this one! I dare you not to fall in love with Billy and Shaz!

Billy Ballew is a construction worker who dreams to get his contractor’s license. But you see, he has a problem – he’s terrified to take test, believing he’s too dumb to pass. He comes from a big, loving family who supports him enough, but he’s a little scared of his religious mother, trying to do everything to please her and to be ‘the perfect’ son. But the thing is Billy is not so happy his family seems to think he is. He can’t keep a long term girlfriend and anyway he’s not really happy with a...woman.
Chase ‘Shaz’ Phillips is a celebrity stylist who defines the word gay. He’s flamboyant and simply fabulous. He owns his own business and he has many great supportive friends who love him like he deserves. He is aware of the fact he’s different from other men and even from other gay men. And he also knows there are people who are not willing to accept 'someone like him'. Even his family didn’t accept his sexuality and threw him out when he was just 16 years old.
Billie and Shaz meet when Billie accepts himself to be talked into working with this famous stylist everyone, but him, knows about. From the moment they met Billie is kinda attracted to Shaz. He’s a gorgeous man, after all. Everyone can tell that, right? The thing is Billie’s cock thinks that as well, so of course Billie is a little confused. He suspects he’s gay, but how he can know for sure? Shaz is smitten with Billie as well. Even if he knows getting involved with a straight or a closeted man is not the best idea, he can’t stay away from this meaty construction worker. Both men are reluctant to get involved with each other for different reasons, but when the attraction between them is growing with every day and the chemistry between them is off the charts, both of them realize they can’t stay away from each other.
Even if the premise or the plot is nothing new from other m/m books, I found this story very entertaining. And one of the reasons is the two main characters Billy and Shaz. I had such a great time reading about these two. They truly put a big smile on my face. Billy and Shaz are absolutely adorable. I loved them individually and I loved them together. They are perfect for each other and they complete each other in every way that counts. They are endearing from beginning.
Billy is such a good man. At 6’4’’ he’s a big man, a gentle giant with a heart of gold. He’s loyal and brave. He’s a good son, supporting and helping his parents financially and sacrificing his career and future to put his sisters through college. He’s a great example for the kids from his little league team and he also is a great friend. Shaz is adorable! I loved him to pieces. He’s a hardworking man, funny, charming and a great friend. With Billy is so caring and supportive helping with ‘the test’ and I loved him for that. He sees the real Billy and loves him exactly how he is.
I loved how their relationship from strangers/friends to lovers evolved and how eventually they fell in love with each other. I have to say I enjoyed how the chemistry between them is build up and I loved the sexual tension between them and how playful they are with each other. The sexy times between them are hot or/and sweet and I enjoyed them all. The angst and the drama are very low I loved all the side characters. All of them were likeable and engaging.
All in all, “Knight of Ocean Avenue” was an enjoyable read about love, self-discovery, family, friends, and acceptance with endearing main and supporting characters, entertaining dialogue and engaging writing.

4.2 Stars - Sugary sweet romantic, just WONDERFUL
A fresh newly published M/M romance next to all my friends rated with four or five stars. I was very hopeful and curious.
Oh yes, he can...
Happy dancing moment. I always like me a flamboyant cutie gay character who get himself a sexy manly hunk to love. I got it all.
Awww!!! ~ This was so amazing romantic. Loved it. Loved the boys... loved the love.
Knight of Ocean Avenue is a tender sweet GFY tale about the construction worker Billy Ballew and the flamboyant Chase 'Shaz' Phillips, a celebrity stylist who defines the word gay.
These two meet in preparation for Billy's sister’s big wedding. Shaz is doing the styles, clothes etc and Billy is mesmerized from their first meeting. He can't stop fantasize about this shining, actually sparkling, gorgeous man. The most amazing sexy and beautiful man he ever seen. - It is love from first sight.
I must admit that this is next to too much lovely silly fluff, but it felt so good to read about these wonderful guys, their cuddling, their tender hot moments, and their wonderful love story. Everyone is adorable and beautiful, there are a lot of accepting nice people and it is all like a fairy tale. ~ That storyline concept is not for me always but this time worked it fine and it was quite okay with all cheesy stuff. I just smiled, felt it in my heart and simply enjoyed.
Recommended to anyone who wants to float between pink fluffy clouds, and just enjoy a sweet amusing romance for a short while. Love is magical and this book reminded me of it over and over again.

Knight of Ocean Avenue is a tender sweet GFY tale about the construction worker Billy Ballew and the flamboyant Chase 'Shaz' Phillips, a celebrity stylist who defines the word gay.
These two meet in preparation for Billy's sister’s big wedding. Shaz is doing the styles, clothes etc and Billy is mesmerized from their first meeting. He can't stop fantasize about this shining, actually sparkling, gorgeous man. The most amazing sexy and beautiful man he ever seen. - It is love from first sight.
”Well, this guy is the one I like, but he thinks he can’t ever fit into my life. Now, that’s not saying that a big, dumb, no-class clod like me can fit into the life of a beautiful, rich, smart, stylish man like this, but if I could, I wanted him to know that I’d be happy to take him anywhere and introduce him to my friends and say this is my boyfriend, if he’ll have me.”
I must admit that this is next to too much lovely silly fluff, but it felt so good to read about these wonderful guys, their cuddling, their tender hot moments, and their wonderful love story. Everyone is adorable and beautiful, there are a lot of accepting nice people and it is all like a fairy tale. ~ That storyline concept is not for me always but this time worked it fine and it was quite okay with all cheesy stuff. I just smiled, felt it in my heart and simply enjoyed.
Recommended to anyone who wants to float between pink fluffy clouds, and just enjoy a sweet amusing romance for a short while. Love is magical and this book reminded me of it over and over again.

Knight of Ocean Avenue is book one in the Love in Laguna series by Tara Lain. This has been on my to read list for awhile now. I love the cover.
Billy Ballew is twenty five years old and is a construction worker. Billy lives a life of more or less mediocrity. He’s been engaged three times, all ended by the bride to be. And now his latest relationship just ended. He wants to be with someone but he never feels much of anything. Sex is somewhat blasé. He doesn’t feel overwhelming love or passion. He’s good at his job but due to extreme bullying when he was little and a reading disorder, he is now terrified of taking tests. So he has never gotten his contractor’s license. Even though he knows the answers backwards and forwards. He loves his family but his mother is a bit of a force. And now his sister is getting married. Part of the wedding preparations is that they want him to visit her wedding stylist to improve his look. And that’s when his world is turned upside down.
Chase Phillips, otherwise known as Shaz, is an up and coming stylist. His popularity keeps him scheduled months in advance. Shaz lives his life filled with color. He has flaming red hair and dresses in wild colors and styles. He’s got the biggest heart. You’d think that these two were about as opposite as they could be. A rough and tough construction worker who lives in sweats and tshirts. And a fancy dressing, poised man who lives his life out loud. But you couldn’t be more wrong.
“The guy was like fire to his kindling. He’d been waiting his whole life for those flames.”
The attraction between them is immediate. But both fight it. Poor Billy is more confused than ever. He can’t figure out why he’s having this sexual awakening now at age twenty five. If he was gay, wouldn’t he have known it sooner? But maybe he really always did and just ignored the signs. Because suddenly his life is brighter and more intense. He’s waking up and it’s all because of Shaz.
I really did love both of these characters. Both were such wonderful men. Billy did so much for his family. He was such a proud man. And Shaz, even though he lived his life out in the open, was still willing to sacrifice real happiness for the betterment of his employees, his business. He never saw what he felt for Billy coming. And I really liked how they complemented each other’s lives. They just fit.
As I said, I really enjoyed this book and Billy and Shaz. Both men were so sweet. I’m not sure if I loved it enough to continue the series though. Maybe I’ll come back and take a look at it later on.

I was lucky enough to beta this which was good, because I was craving some new Tara Lain! I just adored it. It's probably my favorite of Tara's just behind Fire Balls. I like that it's a straight-up contemporary, lovely and funny, hot and sweet. I couldn't put it down, which is a high compliment from me.
I highly recommend it to all m/m romance readers!

I've been reading and loving Tara Lain's books since I discovered M/M romantic fiction approx four years ago and fell hook, line and sinker for the genre. Her other Laguna based series: Balls to the Walls, were some of my earliest and most enjoyable reads… book one helped fuel my slavish love of ménage…and reading Knight of Ocean Avenue, which is also set in the same location, took me right back to those early days because it reminded me so much of the feel of those stories and just how great Tara Lain is at writing this particular type of sweet but hot sexy… with a capitol SIZZLE!...feel good, opposites attract story, featuring hunky 'straight' Alpha males who are deeply in denial of their sexuality, and their more effeminate, outré (but far from air headed) love interests whose flaming fabulousness and dazzling beauty, unlock the closet doors of these sexually deluded men, leading to them all finally finding the loves of their lives, their soul mates and ultimately themselves and their true paths in life!
Billy and Shaz's endearing love story follows those lines but what makes it all the more delightful and engaging are the two men themselves. As characters they're nothing short of adorable...in both their separate personalities and as a couple. The first time each of them appear on page you just know they're going to fix themselves firmly into your heart. From the moment they encountered each other an instant chemistry and delicious sexual tension was generated… I was in m/m MC love, channelling my inner romantic!
All the way through I really did feel the warm and fuzzies. I literally read it with a sappy grin on my face, and that sense of contentment you get when you know you've found your happy reading place. The plot follows a trope that's been done many times. As I said earlier the storyline is reminiscent of some of Tara's earlier books, but it shows that in the hands of the right author, familiar and expected can still come out feeling fresh and enticing...

I loved this story. LOVED it! I couldn't put it down and ended up having to take a cab to work because I lost track of time.
Billy is incredibly sweet and so freaking adorable and Shaz is goddamn perfection. After I finished it I read it again. I'm too gushy to write an actual review of it but I can't recommend this one enough. All kinds of awesome.

This was quite weird.
Billy is a 25 year old construction worker. Big on the outside, but so incredibly gentle on the inside. He has dated his fair share of women, but none of them got his heart beating faster. He just went with what was expected of him.
Well, all of that changes when he meets Chase ‘Shaz’ Philips. The flaming queen makes Billy question his sexuality. Billy just never thought about being either straight or gay. But after meeting the obviously gay stylist Billy knows he wants him.
Billy’s character was wonderful. So sweet, so gentle. And Shaz, a total flaming queen, he was awesome. I did feel as if the relationship could have used a little more depth in the second half. The two didn’t know each other that well before the I-love-yous were flying around.
This story is just one of those feel-good stories. But I have no idea why the author suddenly went the wrong way every time a sex scene came up.

WHAT A WONDERFUL, FEEL GOOD BOOK!
This is what I needed! This made me remember why I love M/M Romance! It had awesome and adorable characters, a great story, some nice angst, and a wonderful HEA ending. (Disguised as a preview for Book 2)
I loved Billy! Even though I wanna throttle him for being so naive, I loved how he accepted his true sexuality. I smiled when he said this:
I know being gay is very hard, but there times that you'll feel it's worth it.
I liked Shaz, he is the perfect support for Billy. They fit together. Btw, I liked Rhonda too. There was a time when I wanted a girl like her. Lol! I also liked Teresa and Jim, Billy is blessed to have them.
Even though the story was a little predictable at times, it held most of my attention. The first half was exasperating, but the final half will make you feel so damn good.
Btw, read the preview for Book 2 because Billy & Shaz's wedding is in there!
I'm very happy that I read this because I'm going through something right now. It really made me feel good. I'm looking forward for the rest of the series!

I want to start by saying I hate writing 3 Star reviews.3 Stars means: Average book which I read thoroughly. I liked not loved.
This book has high ratings all around, and I couldn't start it fast enough. Once I started though- I had a difficult time connecting to the story. I'm going to start with the negative and I warn you now some of them are just me being a down right nitpicky bitch, but hey that's my opinion.
***MAJOR SPOILERS***
Now let's move to the positive.
*Shaz. Despite what I mentioned up top, I loved his character. He was sweet and loving.
*Billy. Again, despite what was mentioned above, I loved his character as well. He was sweet and loyal. I just wanted to hug him.
*Billy and Shaz together.They were so adorable.
*Ru, Shaz's best friend.
*Theresa, Billy's sister.
I think this book had an equal amount of pros and cons for me, and I never felt like DNF'ing it. And would I recommend it? Yes, I would. I think I'm just having a George Constanza moment.
Because I'm clearly the minority.

Billy, Billy, Billy. Sweet, gorgeous, giant man. His relationships never last, and he can’t figure out why women dump him. He is so nice. And so clueless. Why does the sex always suck? Why does he never want it? Why does he search for big cock porn? 😂
When he meets his sister’s stylist, gorgeous flamboyant Shaz, he is mesmerized. And even when he realizes he is attracted to Shaz, he can’t imagine why a man like Shaz could ever want Billy. Billy with his Marvel movie star good looks and sweet nature. Why would anyone want him? Billy was too sweet and adorable for words.
The sex was scorching. The banter was super cute. The side characters were fun.
Now the bad.
The cheating. Right, left and center cheating. Not between Shaz and Billy, but it still left me annoyed and disappointed.
Billy’s mom. She was annoying and overbearing. But then what annoyed me even more was that while she was so present in the beginning, at some point she disappears and we don’t see her or hear from her again until the very end. It was just so weird.

My buddy Dani described Knight of Ocean Avenue perfectly when she said that it was a "low angst, feel good, sweet, and sexy story". It was definitely all of that.
But the highlight of this book - at least for me - was the main characters. I can't tell you how much I adored Billy's sweet, humble, big-hearted, blue collar way. I mean, how can you resist a man that steps in to protect a total stranger from the ire of a homophobic a-hole in such a low key but effective way? How can you fail to fall for a man that spends time coaching Little League because he wants to give children a place to feel safe and respected for all that they are? How can you NOT love a man who sacrifices for family? Spoiler alert: you can't; YOU will love Billy too.
And then there was Shaz - the man was sassy and over-the-top and absolutely irrepressible in the best possible way. His cornball dialogue (especially during sex) was worthy of an eye roll, but then again, it was 100% in keeping with his character and definitely gave the book its unique flair. Plus, the man was all sorts of creative (why the hell didn't I think of of sex toy related study aids when I was suffering through university exam anxiety?!).
I did feel as though the book meandered a bit and could have benefited from some cutthroat editing; shaving off 10-20 pages overall would have tightened everything up just a bit and helped with the pacing.
All things considered, though, I thought that this book was probably one of the best I've read by Lain. I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series.

A-dorable.Billy Ballew is a smart, sweet and hard working construction worker. He helped put his sister through college and he helps out his family since his dad had a heart attack. He's coaching Little League, because he wants to give kids a safe place to play and learn to respect each other. He desires to get a contractor's license, but he has a phobia about tests. That's also the reason why he dropped out of high school. He has two adorable "gay" cats, which he loves with his whole heart. Also, he has never really deeply though about his sexuality until he met a beautiful redhead.
Shaz (Chase Phillips) is an up and coming stylist and he's very flamboyant. His profession allows him to be outragous and he takes advantage of it the best he can. When he was a kid his father used to hit him for being different and he threw him out after he came out. After that he has been working hard to get where he is now. Shaz has always dreamed of a knight in shining armor that would rescue him from the cruelties and release him from the tower. It turns out that this white knight might be Billy.
“Uh,Shaz?”
“Yeah?”
“If I’m the knight and you’re the princess, does that mean I always need to be on top?”
Silence. Small chuckle. “Oh no. I’m a very bossy princess.”
It's a story with a really low angst, enjoyable fluff and hot sex. It's funny as well. It made my heart melt and it made me smile a lot. I totally recommend it, especially if you're looking for a book that will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Hmm I've become far more cynical a reader. The blatent stereotyping bothered me, a lot.
The domineering matriarch appears a theme with this author but also 'blue-collar' is treated as practically a different species. Women even when strong are not portrayed well with emphasis on body shape. Oh and a casual 'hitler's youth' reference that I can't decide if racist, ignorant, or both.
Billy is likeable, Chase vibrant, beyond that ugh! 2*

Light angst-free read. It's a familiar trope, I read it not long after reading Family Man - compare the first line of each blurb! So yeah it's nothing original, yet it is a nicely done feel-good. The characters are appealing and Shaz sparkles.
Billy is lovely, an all-round decent guy who knows what he likes but hasn't met anyone worth the risk before. It's not really GFY, I think of it as worth being gay for. Shaz bubbles with personality, style and colour. He has truly interesting ways to help with exam nerves too!
It's these main characters that make it worth a read.
The plot was predictable - I saw the 'surprise' from the moment of introduction. Billy's mother was a carbon copy trope which did cause some eye-rolling and I could have done without the religious aspect though it's not too invasive. There was quite a bit of eye-rolling at different points - this is completely free of angst even when a little angst was called for. Sometimes though it's nice to loose yourself in a world of acceptance and bright happy people.
Perfect for following a darker read, this is light pleasant fare.

Billy is lovely, an all-round decent guy who knows what he likes but hasn't met anyone worth the risk before. It's not really GFY, I think of it as worth being gay for. Shaz bubbles with personality, style and colour. He has truly interesting ways to help with exam nerves too!
It's these main characters that make it worth a read.
The plot was predictable - I saw the 'surprise' from the moment of introduction. Billy's mother was a carbon copy trope which did cause some eye-rolling and I could have done without the religious aspect though it's not too invasive. There was quite a bit of eye-rolling at different points - this is completely free of angst even when a little angst was called for. Sometimes though it's nice to loose yourself in a world of acceptance and bright happy people.
Perfect for following a darker read, this is light pleasant fare.

I'm unapologetically in a place where I am loving all things sweet and fluffy. After the weekend gone I'm all about hearts and flowers and this is all hearts and flowers.
Billy is a sweet gentle giant and Shaz is ballsy and fabulous and kind. Their journey was a little bumpy but it was lovely and made me all mushy.
I fear I'm going to start randomly hugging people at this stage.
"But if you never pass the test, I will love you not one tiny particle less."
Billy's lips parted on their own. Did Shaz just say he loved him? "Do you-?"
"Love you? Yes. I was marking time in my life until I met you."
Also Shaz has a very interesting way of dealing with exam stress.
I really liked the secondary characters in this, I was a bit unsure about some things. Mainly Giles' addition to the story and the aftermath, or more to the point the lack of aftermath but it didn't take away from Shaz and Billy so I'm not all that bothered.
A low level angst GFY.
Oh and 'the boys' Clancy and Yerby deserve a shout out because, HELLO, adorable!!

***Unpopular Opinion Alert***
This book is universally loved by almost all of my friends....and yet, I sit here...
There really weren't many characters here that I connected with and liked....especially, Billy.
He was supposed to be this "aww, shucks" endearing kind of character, but all I got was...
All he did was put himself down....too stupid, too dopey, mediocre, etc... And don't even get me started on the fact that he had NO CLUE he was gay until hooking up with Shaz. Let's see....you've masturbated to gay porn, gone to a gay club to get a blowjob (you know.."because guys know what they like, so they'll be the best at it"), frotted with a friend in high school, don't find sex appealing with women, etc... I just can't believe that someone can be that oblivious.
And Shaz...well, he came off as someone who would hook their wagon to whoever could help him in his life. He was with Giles because he had money and could further his business (who he ended up cheating on...though Giles was an ass and was cheating on him too), he was considering Alexander because he could invest in his company and help him expand and he knew that Alexander wanted him (but then his workers talked him out of that), and honestly....it felt like the only reason he was with Billy was because he was big, strong and intimidating and would protect him. All the "knight" references got to be too much by the end.
But mostly, I just don't think this author's writing style is for me. It's awkwardly paced and the dialogue feels like rambling. I couldn't find a flow to my reading if my life depended on it. It was just too bumpy. And all the "darlings" and formal dialogue didn't help matters.
I'm glad I gave this one a try because it's been recommended to me countless times, but I wish the outcome could have been better.
Oh, and before I forget....to Billy's mom....
I'm going to chuck this book in the "it's just me" pile and move on. I'm definitely in the minority, so don't let my rambling stop you from picking this one up.

Easy read with low angst and cheating. Yes, there is some cheating, which is a turn off for me. I also didn't buy all the kittens and rainbows reactions to Billy coming out.
Though it has some real ragey moments (see my status updates for more info), and it's completely unbelievable, I still enjoyed some parts.
If you can ignore the cheating and eye roll worthy cluelessness of Billy, this is an enjoyable, engaging, and cute story with a sweet and sexy HEA.

Oh boy. I’ve never cringed and shouted “say what now?!” so many times reading a book. Gay awakening is generally full of the typical struggle of “I can’t be gay!” But this gay awakening is full of problematic language and situations. Reading it feels like a straight person who watched too many misogynistic 90’s romcoms decided to write from a gay perspective and it failed spectacularly. And I’m bummed because Shaz as a character had the potential to make this book decent but the damsel in distress thing fell flat for me.

I am so surprised at how much I enjoyed this. This book has so many things that normally drive me crazy, but every time I got to the point of losing my mind something great would happen and I'd forget my insanity.
Just a very enjoyable story with wonderful characters, except for the majority of Billy's family, I didn't like them at all, even at the end.
I liked it quite more than I thought I would.

Wow, this is exciting, sexy, realistic, funny, serious, emotional, engrossing, heartwarming and I loved it !!!
The deep characters are engaging, with an interesting tale to tell, and along with super hot sexiness, this is a worthwhile read.
We have Billy Ballew, construction supervisor who has three failed engagements to women, is devoted to his family, coaches Little League, and has two cats, and a hard as nails bible quoting mom. He goes into the coffee shop and - wham - he sees Chase/Shaz, a beautiful man with flowing red hair, about to be punched by a homophobic ass. At 6'5", all he has to do is look at the man, and the man backs down. Shaz was braced for the hit, and is happy to be standing, looking at his "Knight."
Later, when he's herded to a stylist to get fixed up for his sister's wedding, it's Shaz, the top-shelf celebrity stylist, who walks in. He's gorgeous, with long red hair, and the whole package is a sight to behold. Billy had a few encounters with gay men, but is beginning to realize he's more than interested, not just in any man, but only Shaz. The feeling is mutual. A deal is struck for fittings, a new set of clothes, and a promise of a photo session.
* We have a lot going on, with Shaz, his business expanding, and with Billy, who wants a Contractor's license and more in his life. The guys are getting to know a bit about each other and themselves and what they truly want. This is witty, funny, amazingly caring and defines their true love. Billy is brave and sweet, blossoming in his new gayness. Once he finds his true self, he owns it, and battles the homophobic work crew, bigoted Little League parents, his Mom.
* Flamboyant Shaz we find out has been hit and verbally abused by his father the minister. I loved the cats, and why they were named Clancy and Yerby, loved Shaz's stuffed cat named Barcheil and how important he was. (FYI: Barcheil was an ancient Hebrew Archangel of blessings)
Loved the Bible knowledge Shaz wielded skillfully with Billy's Mom. Loved that these guys were perfect for one another, like pieces of a puzzle put into in place. Read it. Find out how Billy passed the Contractor's test.
I was engrossed in this amazingly beautiful story. Thank you so much Tara Lain for your well written tale.
I'll be re-reading this one, and I'll never forget it. It is that memorable.

A feel good, opposites attract story. I loved the chemistry between the two MC's. Shaz is unapologetic in his flamboyance, which is a plus in his line of work as an up and coming stylist, but can cause some problems outside of that. Billy is a gentle giant of a construction worker, with some self-esteem issues, who finds it hard to deny his family anything, even his overbearing and disapproving mother. He has sacrificed most of his life to help them and all he gets as thanks is a constant barrage of complaints about his failure to keep a woman and the way he looks.
Billy's coming to terms with his feelings for Shaz was sweet and played out nicely without getting angsty. There is a good cast of secondary characters, some stereotypical and some surprising, that lend support for the two MC's. This is one of those stories that left me smiling and looking forward to more.

This is a lovely story and delightfully romantic. It is a real feel good story with some lovely characters.
I enjoyed it all except for the 'pressure cooker' religious mum who actually reminds me of a very close friend 'cringe' and I say this knowing that I am religious too. Thankfully love overcomes everything and that's the way it should be even when children or those we love don't fit our preconceived notions. Far better not to have those notions but just to hope for love, life and simplicity and allow the people around us to be fully who they really are.
I took a chance on this story. There was something about the blurb that attracted me and I am so glad I bought it. It has a cinderella feel to it and with the cats, stylists, baseball playing kids, wedding and a knight in shining armour, it rises to a beautiful crescendo of a happy ending.
And what is really nice is that there is more to come.
