Emily Organ is the author of over thirty historical cozy mysteries set in Victorian and 1920s England. Her bestselling series include the Penny Green Victorian Mysteries, the Augusta Peel Mysteries, and her newest Emma Langley Victorian Mysteries, in which a plucky widow teams up with former reporter Penny Green. She also writes the Churchill & Pemberley cozy mysteries, featuring two spirited senior sleuths. Emily’s books combine warmth, wit, and a love of history, inspired by her fascination with London’s past.
The first three cozy mysteries starring Penny Green, a news reporter in Victorian London. The audiobooks were well narrated by Gabrielle Baker. I enjoyed the characters, the budding romance, and the atmosphere. Easy listens if typical plots.
In Victorian England Penny Green is an unmarried 34 year old woman who is a journalist. Her sister says she's a spinster and most every woman she meets thinks she would be better off if she married. Even the men she works with at her paper find it unusual that she enjoys working and doesn't seem interested in marrying. This volume contains three mysteries in which Penny Green works with Scotland Yard detective inspector James Green. The first of the three is about an actress, presumed killed in a boating accident five years previously, who is murdered in a cemetery. The second is about a series of murders in a slum area of London. In the third mystery Penny goes underground to work as a maid for a ruthless industrialist. Each novel has been carefully researched and the author gives the names of many of the books she used to help her write the Penny Green series. There are at least three more of these books and I look forward to reading them.
So this the first book I've read by this author and the first book in the first three . All I can say it's slow and a little bit dull much like the character of penny green . As women a head of her time working as a journalist and living alone in the city of London she should have been riveting but she's boring . I've never said this before but I thought her characters age was to old it was 35 which by today's standards is practically a youth But since the average life expectancy for a women was between 42 and 50 in Victorian times it didn't ring true. Also she seemed to have no life experiences what so ever .Hopefully the next book will be better but i can't say I'm in any rush to find out .
It’s frustrating to me for the female lead character not to “get” it at times but it reminds me how people often make assumptions based on societal belief.
I am Hoping.for Book #4. Anyone who has read these books know that Penny and James are far more suited to each other than Charlotte is for. James or Mr Edwards is for Penny. Perhaps Mr .Edwards and Charlotte would be better suited for each other.
I hadn't read anything by this author before but I've read the first three Penny Green book and I'm completely hooked Perfect escapism which I think we all need in seat uncertain times
Along with the interesting details of the time period being written about, the author also gets us involved with each of the characters. To the point that if we were to meet them on the street, we would know exactly who they were.
Enjoyed books 1 through 3. Want to see how the Inspector gets out of marrying his intended and can find a way to connect with Penny. A few surprises in the series.
