Eleni is fighting for her life and her sanity in the Green Lands. She's so desperate, she believes barbaric Keldar is her only hope. Having convinced her brother he should send her as an ambassador, she allows herself to be captured and sold to the Keldari warrior Zahar. Zahar has plans for Eleni. Her unique bloodline means she can appear to fulfill a prophecy that will make the man who holds her the ruler of all of Keldar; so he's going to give her to his brother. The gods have other plans for Eleni and Zahar; plans that may not leave them alive at the end.
There is so much plot potential that unfortunately came across as chaotically rushed and confusing for the most part. Insta love but strong characters who just needed flushing out and more world building to help with the flow.
I loved the action in this. I am a fan of this whole series. I'm in love with the quote that love is the greatest gift but also the greatest sacrifice.
Joely always gives her readers story, delightfully poetic writing (not the same thing as ‘Story’, I’ll have you know), and impossibly romantic themes that both tears your heart to shreds and pieces them back together all before ‘The End’.
The Fire Within, by Joely Sue Burkhart, is no exception. It made my heart sing, my pulse race and I can’t count the number of times my eyes teared up.
Eleni decides to take matters into her own hands to escape her brother Darius, who has the ability to hurt her both in the physical world as well as her dreams. Under the guise of tactical planning, she infiltrates a caravan and is sold to Zahak saif’Cobra, the only man she thinks can save her from her brother, only he is honor bound to deliver her to his own. Their attraction sparks and sizzles on the page even from their first meeting and it only gets more and more difficult as their passions refuse to be caged by either honor or fear.
I have a soft spot for Malum, a side character, but Zahak is with out a doubt my new favorite hero of Joely’s books (only because I technically consider Gregar an anti-hero…and come on, the cover art makes him look drool-worthy). Eleni is not easily ignored either, but then again none of Joely’s heroines are. She makes it extremely hard to choose favorites, but there you have it.
Keldar is a harsh land, and utterly fascinating in it’s devastation. I cannot wait for her next book in this world.
I grabbed a copy of this story when I saw it was free, and boy am I glad I did. The story of Eleni and Zahak sucked me in right from the start and held my attention to the very end. So much so, I read this story in one sitting!
A little more sexy time would have bumped this up to a 5 star read, but that's on me not Ms Burkhart.
While this is the fifth in a series, I read it as a standalone and had no problem following the plot.
Now to backtrack, and read the rest of this series.
