His Eminence, Archbishop and Metropolitan Mark Haverland sets forth a concise survey of Anglican Catholic Faith and Praxis in a handy volume for inquirers into the life of the Anglican Catholic Church. Whereas one who is studied in theology of both Western and Eastern Christendom may draw different conclusions, especially around such thorny issues as Contraception, Purgatory, Divorce and Remarriage or Annulment, the place of the Papacy in the life of the Church of Christ, or the primacy of Scripture even over Magisterium and Sacred Tradition, Archbishop Mark states the position of the Anglican Catholic Church with candor and reasonableness, often quoting the Book of Common Prayer, Holy Writ, the teachings of the Fathers and Ecumenical Councils, the 39 Articles of Religion and the Affirmation of St. Louis. Overall Anglican Catholic Faith & Practice is a solid primer for those looking into the life of the Anglican Catholic Church and a good book as an introduction to the Church Catholick.
As an Anglican Catholic, this book in particular has helped me understand how the Christian faith better, from history to theology, and tradition.
Archbishop Haverland details out well in examples and descriptions the importance of tradition and reason with Scripture, from analyzing the Ecumenical Councils to the Church Fathers, and more. Furthermore, he summarizes well the Anglican perspective on the Papacy, Protestantism, and so on. On top of all the heavy stuff, he gives details on the Mass from vestments to the altar to sacramental theology and the life of prayer.
While I certainly wished there was an emphasis or details on Anglicanism stretching back to the 6th century, there are good books on that as well.
In general, if one needs a detailed overview of the Anglican Catholic tradition, then this would be it.
A fine introduction to Anglo-Catholic theology, but Haverland provides no reasons why this later aberration of Anglicanism ought to be preferred to the full riches of Protestant "Reformed" Anglicanism.
This was a helpful and concise into to one perspective of what the Anglican church is and should be. It helped me to get a sense of the wider world of Christian theology outside of the Protestant Evangelical denominations I am most familiar with.
Content was there but the format is lacking. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but did cause some distraction at times. A lot of ground was covered but the text didn't go on unnecessarily which I appreciated.
