How long can you run from your past? How long can you stay in the shadows?
A new town. A new start. A new life. Anything should have been possible for me after moving from the bustle of my California home to a small town in the south, but what if I’m not able to move on?
And then, what about the Gods?
Three boys who rule the school, golden monarchs, have set their sights on me from day one. Maybe they’re all trouble, but I am too…
My past haunts me even as I try to keep moving forward and I’m struggling to balance myself, my history, new life, and friends. Can I really handle dating a guy on top of all that? Let alone three?
If my past catches up to me, I may never find out.
Look inside and dive into Cameron’s world as she navigates small town politics, a mysterious past, and coming to terms with her own self-worth.
This is a slow burn, young adult, reverse harem romance with a dark twist that ends with a HEA.
Trigger warning: PTSD. Mentions of: drugs, alcohol, and gang violence.
This book would have been better without stereotyping southern people. This author made it seem like everyone in the South is stupid ( because supposedly all the schools are bad), racist and homophobic. And of course California is the only place that has open minded people. This book made no sense in that they MFC and mother move to a southern state, even though there is a home in CA that they can move into. There is no back story about what happened to make them move, just a scene where MFC tells a little and then a off handed comment about rape. The MFC never stated she got counseling for what happened or for trying to commit suicide. There were so many topics in this book that were glossed over and forgotten. The MFC's father was never really brought up and there is nothing about what happened to him, just figure out he's dead at the end of the book because he left a cabin in his will. You would think this would be a topic that would bother the MFC, but nothing. The is one character at the start of the book you think should be in the harem, especially since it was stated that 3 of the guys were moving to CA, but he gets cut out completely. He was only one you got to know a little about. The other make characters are just there and never learn anything about them. There was just no connecting with any of these characters. You don't really care if they end up together or not. There were too many things overlooked in this book. Won't be reading anything else by this author.

This story is a ya contemporary rh. Nothing more than a little kissing, hugging, holding hands is happening here. The dark past of Cam is basically a big mistake and we only get a gloss over of this dark events. No information why she became friends with the people at her old school. Because of that Cam and her mum moved to a small town in the south. Even if Tamara was a lovable friend, Cam was an okay FMC, the Characters in the book had nothing remarkable or memorable. And the author stereotyped the people pretty much, like the geeks, the jocks who were called the Gods, your typical mean girls and so on. And let me tell you, there are people, who love their small towns anywhere in this world and wish they could stay there, whereas the MC’s just wanted to rush to California, where the small towns were described to be no better than in the south.
It was a quick read, but I expected more, especially about Cam’s background.
-it was a really sweet story. I liked that it wasn’t sexual, and just focused on the friendships and budding relationships between the characters -having two different groups of friends that she was divided between, both in friendship and romantically was an interesting aspect that I haven’t really seen before. That they eventually came together to form one big group was great. -the self-awareness in terms of lack of racial diversity. A good amount of books I read center around mostly white people (like most of media) but they never really bring that point up. -it’s super cute that they all read together and had their role playing game
What I disliked:
-the book was generally lacking in detail, leading to many confusing parts -Cam has panic disorder resulting from a past situation, but that situation was never fully disclosed. We got a snippet of it. When telling the story to the guys (which is the only time we as the readers get the story, btw), she even says that she’s given them the abbreviated version. Like no? I’m reading this book about you, can I please get the full version at some point? It just made it seem like the authors themselves didn’t know what the full version would entail. Like at one point Cam offers up that she has been SHOT before. And not only do we not get any further detail about that little gem, everyone just skims over it, as if she didn’t just say that. Then she keeps saying things like “not again” in reference to other situations (i.e., having a stalker), which is not part of the information that she had disclosed. Did she have a stalker previously? Were we just supposed to know that part? - Also, she says more than once that it was her own bad decisions that led to what happened, but based on the (again, brief) story she told, I don’t see how that’s true? Her “friends” used and attacked her. This is where more detail would have been super helpful. - Also (part 2) Cam had this whole spiel for Vicky when she shows up about how she [Vicky] can be a better person and she deserves a better life. But she actually doesn’t deserve those things. She deserves to be in prison, because she did truly vile, evil things. And she doesn’t hold an ounce of remorse. - Some of the characters who are supposed to be love interests are basically non-existent. Like Noah? I sometimes didn’t know if he was supposed to be in a scene. Suddenly he’d say something and I’m like, “oh, yeah, he exists.” The three “gods” all had the same personality. I think there were just too many characters to make it work in this short of a book. It needed to be longer and more detailed for this many love interests. - I think we got physical descriptions of maybe half the guys? I genuinely don’t know what they’re supposed to look like, except that some of the “nerdy” ones have tattoos, and the “gods” are just supposed to be really attractive (see above bullet). -common in these types of books, but MFC was very much “not like other girls” “gets along better with boys” “ I’m different because I dyed my hair and that’s a personality trait now” “I like to read books” type deal -the mother was pretty strange. Cam describes her as this strict, religious lady, but then she kind of acts/ speaks like a kid. For instance, she actually refers to the 3 “gods” as “The Gods,” and knows about how “popular” they are. But realistically, I don’t think any parent would care about the popularity of some kids, nor would they use some cheesy nickname like that. - and THEN when Vicky shows up, and Cam goes to meet her, her mother knows and doesn’t try to stop her, or even have a discussion about it after. Just gives her the ol “you’re grounded and take my bat next time.” You know, like you do, when your daughter goes to meet a gang member in the middle of the night whom you’ve moved across the country to escape and who did unspeakable things (supposedly, we don’t really have those details) to your daughter and nearly caused her to take her own life. Why would that warrant further discussion? -they kept bringing up that Cam should stay or might want to stay after graduation, to be with the boys. But they were literally all planning on leaving. They had said so several times. Sooooo that one didn’t make sense. -Cam’s father left her a huge cabin that was just sitting there. Could Cam and her mother not have moved here in the first place? It seems like it was still far enough away to be an escape from her issues.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I feel like I just read a rough draft. There were too many ideas that didn’t feel fleshed out. When I leave a one star review I try to give specific examples thus the spoiler warning.
This book felt all over the place with multiple unexplained ideas that seemed half-assed. Mother and daughter move to a new town to escape the fact that she was a friend (?) to a gang member who used her as bait for another gang and drugged her, beat her up, and used her as bait. Something about drugs? There was a small iota of sexual assault but it was one sentence- it was never fleshed out, this occurred and was about a total one page long. Her telling the guys, then when the gang leader showed up and then that was it. Then there was the mean girl trope and that wasn’t really fleshed out. Then she had a stalker- she met him once and he asked her out and she felt weird. Then he somehow found out where she lived and ect. Then her dad bequeathed a large log house to fit her harem of men- we know next to nothing about her parents except her dad died (which you only think had to have occurred because he left it in his will) and her mom was made to sound like a super holy roller. I don’t know. Honestly it felt like these authors got together and were like “let’s add a stalker,” then the other one was like “let’s add a gang”, “and a mean girl”, “ oooo how about there is a nerd group and a popular group and we’ll call them kings” it just was all over the place. These authors also seem to have some preconceived notions of the south- not really cool, it just made them seem uneducated, if you’re going to write about a place do your research or actually visit it.
The worst part was that the characters really sucked. There was no depth or dimension. You didn’t feel like you knew who was who. There was no real characterization. The FMC had purple hair- boom that’s as deep as it goes.
This was truly a YA read that had no steam, it wasn’t worth reading and I can’t believe they even got an audiobook out of it. I don’t think I’ll ever read anything by these authors.
I loved the relationship of Cam with each of the boys. It developed at a slow and perfect pace. And when they finally got together it was so satisfying.
This book wasn't spicy. It was absolutely clean with some kisses here and there but it was a comfortable and sweet read 🥰 Each of the guys personality is amazing and the plot is spectacular.
But it seemed like there was something missing. The FMc's past wasn't fully explained and telling them and the reactions of the other group of friends wasn't mentioned. Even the reactions when more of her past comes out when facing off with the girl from her past weren't there.
And what about Wade? I thought he would be included in the harem as well as it was mentioned she liked all the six guys but then he disappeared by the end.
Still I loved this. It was nice to read a relaxing book.
“It’s okay, you’ll always be our purple girl,” Sean said and tugged on my hair. “Forever.” 💙
It could have been easily a 5 star book, but unfortunately it felt like there is a huge part of the book missing. As I said this book could have been great, but I have to give it just 3 stars and hope the author will rewrite the story one day, so we could read it whole and not just parts of it. Or maybe we will get a sequel where is everything explained. If that happens and I really hope so, I will happily rewrite my review.
I would classify this as NA just to start off with. The story had so much potential but left large gaps of information out. The FMC talks about being used as "bait" for a gang and getting beat up. Then later mentions she was also raped at the same time. A gang member tracks her down they have a showdown that except for one hit they talk through. She has a stalker who kidnaps her. When she gets away and runs to restaurant for help the waitress implies that she isn't the first woman that has been stalked by the guy. Unless I missed something they never talk about him getting arrested, standing trial, that part of story just ends. The gang story just ends.
Not 3 guys like cover but 5. One who is never on the radar at all. No discussion with FMC about relationship with multiple people. She mentions one time she's from California and had thought about it but that's all. No sexy times, lots of lips brushing.
FMC wants to be veterinarian, have no idea what any of the guys plan to do after high school. Never touched on at all. She never meets guy's parents, her mom is super religious according to her but is fine with her dating multiple guys to the point she encourages the relationship.
The blurb sounded so good! But I just didn't see this as an enjoyable read. I was happy to read it on KU because I wouldn't have purchased it.
P.S. this should be listed as NA due to lack of physical interaction. That's not a bad thing just something to be aware of.
A disappointing reverse harem with very less addressing of actual psychological problems and way too many "let's just be friends" dialogues which somehow became an exclusivity talk towards the end.
Also what happened to Wade? He was literally there from the first scene in the cafeteria and then the author would randomly add him whenever she wanted and pretend he didn't exist otherwise.
I can't believe I'm saying this about RH but yes, way too many guys to keep count here.
The book started with the mother having a problem with stammering but as usual with everything else in the book, the author failed to address it and pretended that she never made that mistake when the mother started talking without a stutter later in the book.
None of the boys have any kind of depth and I kept skipping pages because the story was extremely dull.
This book could probably help people who aren't too sure about reverse harems to venture into such a world as it touched on the same very lightly and doesn't have anything explicit for people who aren't fond of reading books with highly explicit content.
This was sweet in so many ways! Our heroine is shy and reserved, but that’s totally natural given her traumatic past. She hasn't been treated well and hasn't made the best choices. She's in a new town along with her mother, but her past keeps popping up. This is written in the writing style I've come to expect from this author, which I find highly entertaining.
Cameron is lucky enough to draw the attention of the local guys in her neighborhood. They all want to friend and protect her and that makes for some dicey situations. They all learn how to work together. For the first time ever, Cammy has true friends and her life has changed for the better.
I couldn't choose a favorite guy, the 5 all had appeal and were all extremely likable. While this is an RH, it doesn't show much of that dynamic until it's end. They're high school kids with the exception of one and still working out the relationship. It's a sweet story about finding your self-worth and discovering the power of loyalty.
It may sound weird but it was good but not great. Stereotype and stupid assumptions aside it was ok but seriously it needed fleshing out it could have been amazing it could have been Tijan worthy but nope. Too little grit not enough steam and too much religious attitude. Girl you do not have to like the south or Jesus but you could skip all that crap. She wants to move cause her Mama was too strict but her Mama got her a tatoo...really? Her Mom was a sassy lady I liked her she could have really made it deep between the two but it was slim the surface crap. Her relationship should have been deeper with her dudes. This could have been three books with all that went down. She was raped but we just move past that bomb and be like meh ok?! Nope you let me down I asked for a doctorate thesis and got a senior year paper.
Cameron is just a teenager trying to live a life of peace. She moves to the south to get away from people who hurt her badly. Now she's just trying to survive. Brandon, Taylor, Kerin, Sean and Noah are are all boys from her school or former students. They all want her.
Cameron has PTSD from what happened at her old school. She also has a lot of self esteem problems. I love that they read every night. Sharon is adorable. I love Cam's nicknames. The rummage sale was crazy. Arthur is nuts. The football game was scary. Tamara and Wade are great friends. Victoria isn't a nice person. The park scene was something else. There's nothing that happens at all. They are all just friends and that's it. I was hoping for something to happen at all but it didn't. The ending was okay.
I thought this book was really great! I loved the flow and fell in love with the characters, but really threw me was the ending. It seemed so abrupt and a bit rushed that it seemed almost like an afterthought. I wanted to know more about the Gods and their decision to leave with Cameron and what was the issue between Noah and the Gods and how did they finally become friends? There is a lot of unanswered questions, but I think this is an amazing start and I can't wait to see what you come up with next.
This book was a book I needed. I wanted to read about the guys being sweet to the girl and this was perfect in that regard. Cameron has had a traumatic experience and suffers from PTSS. I bought the book and finished it the same evening. It has everything you could possibly want. She goes to a new school and finds a few new friends. There are guys that the school calls gods. They take an interest in Cameron but she isn't committed to a relationship. She makes friends with another group and loves the guys. Can they get Cameron to feel safe and loved? What happens when the past comes back?
I really liked this story. It was really cute and the different personalities each person has was nice. The only thing that kept this from being a higher rating was the characters seemed much younger like early teens not seniors in high school. This was especially true for the FMC. Having come from a bigger city in California and being from a dangerous neighborhood her speech didn't fit with what a 17 year old would actually say. But I still enjoyed the story regardless and plan to delve more into this authors books.
Aww!!! This book is super sweet!!! Great story about small town friendships that build up to something meaningful. I absolutely loved how Cams friends were given multiple opportunities to show how protective they are of her and how much they care for her. I liked that she was able to be vulnerable with them and let them see her dark places.
That being said, this isn’t a dark story and the references are brief and not detailed. I’d rate this dark level 2 since our girl does have some panic attacks. Overall book rating 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First, I have to say I love reverse harem stories. What I recommend the story to readers? Yes I would recommend it to some readers I just got done listening to it on audiobook. I can you some improvements on some of the backstories and gaps. The reason why I gave this book four stars is the title of the book could be improved, The cover could use a little bit work I love the color, the print and improve the cover a little bit. The a book blurb can use a little bit improving.
This book was everything I needed. There was drama and conflict but it didn’t overpower the story. No matter what happened you could always tell that the main character was protected and cherished. I was so happy for the MFC that I could of been glowing. Not only were her love interest amazing for her but the friendships and family she had made it perfect. Great read!
Although I did enjoy the read, the description completely missed telling you that it's 6 guys and not 3. And at the end, I honestly don't know if she ended up with them all or just some of them. It was kinda of fast and confusing.
There were also several things that were mentioned, that were big deals, then she never talked about it again. Like "I have to tell the guys this" then she never does and we aren't sure if they actually know or not.
This was such a sweet book with Cam who moves to a new town after some trouble with gans in her old town. There she meets some amazing friends and some amazing guys.
This is a slow burn story with not much spice. The characters are all so sweet to Cam and treat her with so much respect. If you are wanting something sweet then this is for you. Cam does suffer from PTSD with some references to this during the story but does not go into heaps of detail. Read triggers at beginning of book
Several other reviews have mentioned the middle of the book missing and I agree. And, yeah, what happened to Wade?!? He just got left behind? Left out? I have a problem with that. The romantic relationships never really developed. It was just "I'm the new girl. Bam! We're friends. Bam! We're in love. But not you Wade". I want a complete story. This could be so good.
I did really enjoy this book.Cameron has had a difficult life and has move to a new town for a fresh start. Cameron makes some new friends easily, most being really hot guys. It is slow burn, so be prepared it does move slowly. Hoping there is a follow on book, love to see what happens next.
The only reason I didnt give it 5 stars was because it felt a bit rushed towards the end. I really liked the depth at the start, and how strong Cam is. There are lots of her story which dont get expanded upon, which I feel could've done with more pages. I'm happy she didnt have to choose between her Gods or Geeks in the end
The power of a true friendship is what helped Cam when she moved to the small town. It's hard getting over your past, but with the right people in your life anything is possible. This was a well written reverse harem story that made me want to never put it down. Great job Daisy Emory and Catherine Banks.
I was looking for a book with a bit of drama and not much teenage angst. This fit the bill. I really liked the characters. The gods of the school were a little similar to each other but the rest of the characters were well defined. The plot kept things interesting.
This was a really cute read, and I do realize that she is damaged on the inside but a few times she seemed to take it a bit far. All in all it was great to see friendships bud and develop and for her to find some self worth. Not to mention a bunch of moment that have you laughing at the quirkiness of it all.
I enjoyed this story. Only fault I could find was it was a bit short thus I feel the men in her life weren’t “flushed/filled” out enough. I felt we only skimmed their characters. And POV’s from their point of view would’ve been nice. Also the gang issue seemed resolved too “easily”.
I really wanted to like this book b/c of how awesome the cover is but the story was just all over the place, like something would happen and then the characters would move on like it didn’t even happen, there was very little descriptions of the characters, just very chaotic and unsatisfactory.
