Riveting, and suspenseful, the novel is a narration of three characters - Millie, Oliver, and Emmaline - who tell the events from their point-of-view.
Through the narrated events in the novel, and the three main characters, the author has touched on sensitive issues that many of us have experienced. The author welcomes the readers into the lives of Emmaline (and her husband, Jesse) as they come with the terms they can't have children of their own; Oliver, whose young mother is unable to take average care of her, and has to be swapped between foster parents; and Millie, who struggles with drugs, taking care of her son, and the unending cycle of falling in the wrong hands of whom she thought would be her longtime partner.
The heartaches, uncertainties, betrayal, and what appears has of God had abandoned them; the characters through the challenges they undergo provide act as a reminder despite all the trials we face in life, we shouldn't lose our hope, and faith in God.
The three characters are well-formed, and the events are believable enabling a reader to make a truthful connection.
You'll sympathize and empathize with the characters. It's an emotional story, which makes it a good read.
