The Dakota Hurricanes and Lightning are back!
More often than not children relate themselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help them to get inspiration from the characters. These stories often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for them to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these stories at regular intervals can actually help them to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.
Hockey Wars 6: Middle School is Book 6 of 6 in the Hockey Wars series. Authors Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson deliver again with this early reader chapter book that both boys and girls will enjoy.
The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘The Dakota Hurricanes and Lightning are back, and together they’re all getting ready for the big drama club production as well as their first year of middle school! …Starting middle school is never easy, but when you have such a great bunch of friends, it can take the pressure out of the first day of school. The girls and boys of the Hurricanes and Lightning not only have to compete against seniors for ice time, but they’ll also need to audition for the big drama club production…There are many changes ahead and some new friends, but with the help and support of their best friends, these kids should be up for the challenge! If you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself! I’ve been following these authors for some time now and their work just gets better and better. My grandkids love it, and so do I!
Authors Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson write in a wonderful, simple and imaginative style that will guarantee the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a lovely story to share with them. Special mention also to Danko Herrera for the wonderful illustrations.
It seems to me that this book was created with a lot of love and joy and it’s clear that the authors really enjoy creating such wonderful stories. Thank you for sharing with us the gift that you have obviously worked so hard to refine. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. A well-deserved five stars from us! ‘We don’t have any classes together this year’ – new school, new challenges
Australian author Ben Jackson has two homes - Tasmania, Australia (his birth place) and Ontario, Canada where he now lives with his Canadian born wife and co-author Sam Lawrence. Ben is a tradesman by day and a writer with Sam by night. Some of their books include HOW TO SURVIVE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, DIVORCE RECOVERY: GUIDE F0R PARENTS & COUPLES, LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS, BEING A MAN, their children’s book series (and for adults in need of some humor!) THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME HOME, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO HOCKEY, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO SOCCER, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED SANTA UP THE CHIMNEY, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO THE DENTIST, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO THE ZOO, IT’S NOT EASY BEING A LITTLE FART. Sam and Ben take us back to the small town of Dakota and write the following: ‘After a successful summer lacrosse season, most of the kids were excited about going back to school and starting their first year of middles school. For most of them, they’d grown up together in the small town of Dakota, playing lacrosse and hockey and going to the same school….The boys played for the Dakota Lightning hockey team and the girls played for the Dakota Hurricanes team…’ Quickly catching the reader up on the history of this squad of kids, Ben and Sam open their new story.
Middle school and the ‘changes’ that occur around that time influence the plot of this story, as the plot synopsis indicates – ‘Starting middle school is never easy, but when you have such a great bunch of friends, it can take the pressure out of the first day of school. The girls and boys of the Hurricanes and Lightning not only have to compete against seniors for ice time, but they’ll also need to audition for the big drama club production. There are many changes ahead and some new friends, but with the help and support of their best friends, these kids should be up for the challenge! Oh, and don’t forget plenty of on the ice action.’
The story once again produces some fine sportsmanship lessons, the series being directed toward the ages 8 - 14.
Aside from the entertainment and laughs the book presents, there are lessons about friendship and the shared love and pleasures of being close. Another winner from Ben and Sam! Highly recommended.

Excellent Series!
Highly recommended by my 10 year old hockey player. We enjoyed reading the series together and would love to keep reading about the boys and girls from Dakota!
