A Mage in Shadow

Rate this book
One year has passed since Madison Roberts found herself standing on a Manhattan street corner with no ID and no memory of her identity, and ever since, her life has been a parade of ghostly hauntings, zombie attacks, sudden superpowers, and paranormal romance. It’s been a weird year, and it’s about to get weirder. After an encounter with a mysterious stranger, Madison awakens in a creepy basement full of body parts, not all of which are dead. Chased from Calvary Cemetery in Queens to the subways of Manhattan by an Egypt-obsessed sorcerer with an army of undead creations, Madison finds danger at every turn. Confronted by suspicious cops, a zombie minotaur, and an enigmatic vampire who claims to know her true name, Madison is finding out there’s no such thing as normal, at least not for her. As she falls deeper into a magical world of deadly intrigue, Madison must find the courage to embrace her developing powers . . . and choose between the identity she’s forged for herself or the one that haunts her heart.

About the author

Tracey Lander-Garrett

Author of the Madison Roberts urban fantasy series.

Tracey grew up in New York, Connecticut, and Florida, none of which was her fault. With one parent an alcoholic and the other a manic depressive, let’s say her childhood was a little . . . chaotic. The magical places books took her to—like Oz and Wonderland and Middle Earth—were havens she could escape to when the chaos got to be too much. She became a lifelong devotee of roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons in high school for similar reasons, not just because elves rule and orcs drool. (But seriously, elves are the best.)

She’s moved approximately thirty times in her life, some of which was her fault. Out of high school, she worked retail and restaurants and desk jobs. She was a theater manager and an assistant and caught the chicken pox from Al Pacino, which was not part of her job description. Eventually she went to college, and holds a BA and an MFA, both in creative writing. Over a thirteen-year period, she taught English for eight different colleges in the greater NYC area, including Brooklyn College, John Jay, and BMCC where she very much enjoyed dropping f-bombs in her classrooms.

Today she teaches in Austin Public Library’s Badgerdog Creative Writing program, where she does not drop f-bombs. She lives in Central Texas with her dream-nerd husband and five adorable-but-maddening senior cats.

I am waiting for book 4!

I needed an escape on this snowy Sunday and I found it in book 2 and 3. A little vampire, some zombies, Baba Yaga, magic, time travel, romance, girl power, satyrs, plenty of New York flavor... and loads more...pack these very readable, varied, and often surprising reads. And all these eclectic threads pull together amazingly well...I can't imagine how much fun Lander-Garrett had plotting these storylines. Highly recommend!
