Spoiler Free Reveiw : The Sleeping Lake Keshan Hareshu
Prelude : If you are hoping to read this book. do not take my opinions into account. Go read the book and judge for yourself.
Soooo..... How am I feeling about this book....?? A bit frustrated ??? Hold on 🙋 before you come at me, let me explain....
"The Sleeping Lake" as a debutant book of the author, I think it's brilliant. As I'm also new to reading this genre, It freaked the hell out of me... Do yourself a favor, DO NOT read this at night ALONE. Even your shadow would feels like frigging ghost 😠🙇🤦
Storyline is every Authentic, though this book gave me a vibe of Supernatural Season 1 Episode 3 'Dead in the Water' ( if you have watched it, you know what I mean, and NO!! storlines are no way similar to each others, just the lake is though)
Story immediately start with our Protagonist Maxwell currently in a writing slump eagerly looking for a fresh start to boost up his ideas... ( And I was like you got to be kidding me to choose this place of all the places man!) And the story goes on...
First , I would say 2/3 half of the book is beautifully written... writing style is very is to graspe and it's really fast pacing book to be honest... From plot's point author has all the right intention to build up the world around this one very 'unfortunate event'... And have to say I'm a sucker for books where the plots unreveal through past and present day situations.. (ex: like in Night Circus By Mr. Erin Morgenstern) I thought Keshan was trying to do the same thing , when there was a transition of timelines in leading up to chapter 1 & 2 ... But bit sad to see this was a isolated situation. Would have been great if we could have the chance to explore the "unfortunate event" in another prospective with a bit of the timeline jump. Atleast for few chapters. Nevermind me. It was beautifully written either way.
And boy there are so so many cliffhangers... 🙄 so many things went unadressed.... no real meaning behind some of the incidents (no explanation)... I might not go into details or this would be a spoiler review... they only just added the horror effect to the scene and thats all.
And no shades & dont hate me for saying this, dialogue wise there were some parts I was like cringing, because I felt so cheesy to even read them... felt like there was whole lot room for the writer to explain to it to us in a more mesmerizing manner, because I know he has that capability, he's a brilliant wirter who has this ability to create movie like effect in our mind just from reading, so I dont know what happened at some scenes. Im truly sorry for saying this. Felt like last 1/3 of the book was rushed, like author was in some sort of a hurry to finish the book.. But it's my personal opinion.
When I finished the book I honestly thought WHAT?? this story should have been a stand alone book.If so it would have been awesome book despite all the facts ( I can be judgemental all I want til the next book comes, right 😒 ?)
As a debut, overall I would rate this a solid 4.2 star book for author's writing style & for the time he has spent on creating this world and for the effort he took to put those thoughts into paper... We can appraise & critic something very easily but I know it's not easy going when it comes to writing a novel.
A Good horror thriller by Hareshu. Quick story line and you could finish the book in a single session. Compared to Sri Lankan horror genre collections this is definitely a standout.
