About the author

Geoff Johns originally hails from Detroit, Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he earned a degree in Media Arts and Film. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1990s in search of work within the film industry. Through perseverance, Geoff ended up as the assistant to Richard Donner, working on Conspiracy Theory and Lethal Weapon 4. During that time, he also began his comics career writing Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and JSA (co-written with David S. Goyer) for DC Comics. He worked with Richard Donner for four years, leaving the company to pursue writing full-time.

His first comics assignments led to a critically acclaimed five-year run on the The Flash. Since then, he has quickly become one of the most popular and prolific comics writers today, working on such titles including a highly successful re-imagining of Green Lantern, Action Comics (co-written with Richard Donner), Teen Titans, Justice Society of America, Infinite Crisis and the experimental breakout hit series 52 for DC with Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid. Geoff received the Wizard Fan Award for Breakout Talent of 2002 and Writer of the Year for 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 as well as the CBG Writer of the Year 2003 thru 2005, 2007 and CBG Best Comic Book Series for JSA 2001 thru 2005. Geoff also developed BLADE: THE SERIES with David S. Goyer, as well as penned the acclaimed “Legion” episode of SMALLVILLE. He also served as staff writer for the fourth season of ROBOT CHICKEN.

Geoff recently became a New York Times Bestselling author with the graphic novel Superman: Brainiac with art by Gary Frank.

MINI-REVIEW: Wally West is the Flash and the Rogues are at war with one another in his city. Normally he could stop them but this is going to be a real challenge.

Narrative focus is upon the Rogues and some of their individual backgrounds.

There's a good nod to Barry Allen in this one (the previous Flash but not the original, mind you).

Good artwork even if not outstanding but certainly above the norm.

Recuerdo haber leído el Flash de Johns en revistas individuales en su momento (¿Hace unos diez años?), y este arco es el que cierra todo lo que hizo mas o menos 50 o 60 números, asi que es realmente dificil de juzgar sin tener en cuenta todo el trabajo que se hizo para llegar a ese punto.

Como cierre de un ciclo es una muy buena historia, incluso teniendo en cuenta los momentos en los que absolutamente nada tiene sentido y uno piensa "bueno, es un comic al fin y al cabo" o "hacer una historia con viajes en el tiempo es difícil. Ahora como historia autoconclusiva me imagino que no debe tener el mismo impacto, pasan muchisimas cosas que no tienen mucho contexto.

Hay muchas ideas geniales en este libro y en la etapa de Johns en general, pero los Rogues ("Villanos" en esta traducción) son lo mejor, es un grupo de personajes muy interesante, ridículos y exagerados, pero temerarios y con sus propios códigos, como una banda de piratas con superpoderes o super armas. Johns hace un buen trabajo en darles una identidad propia y eso le da un tono diferente y único a la serie.

Flash es uno de los personajes de DC de quien me encantaría leer más historias. Si bien muchos no lo saben, este es un personaje extremadamente importante para el universo de DC Cómics, pues sus habilidades pueden incluso generar cambios abismales en el multiverso, causando así múltiples crisis y realidades alternativas.

Este volúmen de la colección de novelas gráficas de DC Cómics contiene la historia de “La Guerra de los Villanos” un arco que corresponde a la serie de Flash protagonizada por Wally West. De hecho, este es uno de los arcos finales de esta serie, y esto es justo lo primero que quiero tratar en esta reseña.

No considero que esta sea una historia por la que los lectores deban iniciar a leer sobre Flash. El objetivo de esta colección de novelas gráficas era presentarnos a los personajes de DC con historias que nos permitan iniciar con ellos de forma sencilla. La guerra de los villanos es un arco que, para entenderlo, necesitas de mucho conocimiento previo sobre Flash, pues de otro modo, te perderás en sus páginas y entre tantos personajes.

En cuanto a cómics no soy tan novato sobre Flash, pues me he leído su serie completa de los Nuevos 52 (La cual quisiera releer para traerles sus respectivas reseñas), sin embargo, hay muchos detalles que no conozco del personaje, y mucho más si se trata de Wally West como Flash.

Definitivamente tendré que releer este tomo una vez haya leído varias historias del volúmen 2 de Flash, pues el contexto es esencial para entender todo lo que ocurre en la historia.

Por lo demás, el tomo estuvo entretenido, las ilustraciones estuvieron perfectas, pero sí me quedó el sin sabor de entender el 60% de lo que ocurría.

Naprosto perfektní zakončení Johnsova runu na Flashovi. Na začátku jsou dva sešity, jeden o Mirror Masterovi a druhej o Heat Weaveovi. Oba jsou úplně skvělý, a přidavej těm postavam pořádnou hloubku, jsou dost podobný tomu sešitu o Coldovi kterej byl v tomhle runu o trochu dřív. Skoro vůbec se v nich nevyskytuje Flash a jsou fakt hezky tragický.
Potom se rozjíždí celá tahle válka mezi dvěma týmy (později třemi) Rogues ("hodní" vs. "zlí") a Flash se mezi nimi jen tak motá a nic moc důležitýho nedělá, spíš funguje jako taková damage control. Pak se do toho ale přimotá Zoom a začne finále celýho tohodle runu. To cestovaní časem je tam docela matoucí, ale který cestování časem není?
Johns to všechno imo uzavřel moc hezky. Kresba Howarda Portera je fajn, ale nic extra speciálního.

This is so bad. It contains every edgy beat you can think of, from cocaine usage, to miscarriage (of twins!!), to child-on-child sexual abuse. If that sounds interesting I promise you, it is NOT. It's an endless show of nonsensical things happening one after the other. It also introduces so many elements/villains at the beginning, and the only one it really circles back on is the reveal of Captain Boomerang 2's mother.

Nie czułem tych emocji z Wallym jako dramatycznym bohaterem. Fabuła bardzo popędzana, tytułowi złoczyńcy tak naprawdę mają drugorzędne role, bo główna akacja dzieje się wokół flasha i zooma (ale innego niż Thawne, bardziej naciąganego), a cały motyw podróży w czasie nie trzyma się kupy. Ten komiks nie nadaje się do czytania bez znajomości całej serii i słabo wypada jako samodzielny tom kolekcji.

Geoff Johns' run on The Flash put him on the map at DC Comics. Rogue War was the final stop on that run, and it has turned into my favorite Flash story. In a way, everything that has come after for the Scarlet Speedster has failed to compare to this story. It catapulted characters like Captain Cold, Mirror Master, Heat Wave and Pied Piper into mainstream DC staples. Before, they were a punchline, rarely used and never perceived as a threat to any worthy hero. Even lesser rogues like The Top and Weather Wizard shine in Johns' story. They all come across as dangerous threats to Wally West, Bart Allen and Jay Garrick. With that being said, the star of the show is a character who despises the titular villains. Johns' creation Hunter Zolomon, aka Zoom, is one of the greatest additions to DC's cannon in the 21st century. His desire to make the Flash a better hero by putting him through various obstacles and ultimate tragedies is compelling and terrifying. The final few chapters of Rogue War, where Wally and Zoom are going head-to-head (with a few special guest appearances by other prominent members of the Flash's history) are incredible. Rogue War is not to be missed, and set the tone for one of DC's greatest creative minds before he became the popular star he is today.

Brilliant. His revamp of the rogues comes to a stunning conclusion. Best villains in the DCU, best characterization of the flash and friends, epic storyline. Who could have known "The Top" could be so terrifying? To say nothing of Captain Cold, who may be my favorite villain. If you have ever liked the flash, you owe it to yourself to read Geoff Johns run on the series, right up to this book, which I believe is his last contribution to the character before he brings back Barry Allen and takes over writing duties again.

Everything comes to a head this volume and it really feels like an epic conclusion. Though the Flash never seems to really do much, the rest of the cast (the Rogues) go crazy with ambition. Cool stuff.

Wally West is one of my favorite heroes, and this book helped me to clarify why - he's simultaneously a down-to-earth family man and a natural born hero. He also has some of the best villains around.

No me gusta considerar los cómics como "libro leído", pero este en concreto es la conclusión a una larga serie de 60 números que me ha dejado pensando.

A veces asociamos a los superhéroes a seres inalcanzables como nos muestran en las películas. En el cine le dan siempre un motivo que los hace haber sufrido y pasan por encima de ello para servir y proteger. Otras veces nos muestran la historia de un ángel caído que lo tenía todo para ser el héroe que todos necesitan y entonces su dolor lo consume tanto que acaba siendo el mayor antagonista de la historia.

Este número es una conclusión que cierra todo el arco de lucha interna que sufre Wally tras pérdida, traición y una condena del destino que es inevitable cumplir.

Tiene una cantidad de puntos de vista que te das cuenta de las motivaciones de cada uno de los personajes. Se les da un trasfondo que los hace sentir vivos y reales. Les inquietan las cosas mundanas y tienen problemas que damos por sentado. Todo esto mientras salvan y/o destruyen ciudades completas haciéndolas arder, criogenizando, intoxicando a los ciudadanos...

Pero lo mejor de esta tanda de números son los monólogos internos. Cómo cambian los sentimientos, sentidos de pertenencia, motivaciones, dolor... Sin embargo hubo un momento en el que paré y pensé: es lo mejor que he leído nunca.

Increíble decir esto de un cómic, pero así es Geoff Johns, el mejor escritor de cómics de la historia. Supera con creces y humildad a Mark Waid y sin necesidad de desterrar su trabajo, sino refrendarlo y homenajearlo de una forma sublime.

Y cómo no mencionar lo brutales que son las viñetas, teniendo los dibujos más duros (brutales) que he visto nunca (salvo en "Batma: Silencio") en la parte de los viajes en el tiempo con los cinco velocistas, tres de ellos escarlata y los dos gualdos más temidos por nuestro héroe.

En definitiva, una obra maestra del arte contemporáneo y una oda a la épica, sufrimiento y redención.

I really enjoyed this story. I love Wally West Flash, so any story when I can spend time with him is a good one. (I mean, as long as they treat the character with respect, unlike certain more recent volumes I've heard about through the grapevine *cough*Heroes in Crisis*cough*). (Of course, that's only what I've heard about that story; I haven't read it myself, so I shall not pass any judgment... I will say, however, I have avoided that book and will likely keep avoiding it. If it's actually a great Wally West story that doesn't assassinate his character, I'd love to know. Honestly, I would love for what I've heard about it to be wrong.) Wow... two parentheses in a row... I'd better get back on topic! This book was a great Flash adventure with some really amazing heart that tugged at the emotions. But, overall, this story was more about the Rogues (which I'm sure is obvious from the title). I'll admit, for me, parts were confusing, as I haven't read EVERYTHING in this continuity, but my own confusion aside, I was eagerly turning pages as I learned more about these rouges and their psyches in a book that was thoroughly action-packed. All of that, and, like I said, an amazing amount of heart and emotion. The only reason I'm not giving it a full five stars, is that some of the animosity of the rogues seemed extreme and convoluted to me... but that could just be because I haven't read the other books leading up to it. So take that minus-1 star with a grain of salt. This book seemed like an excellent culmination of a lot of plot--all while still delivering on equal parts action and character introspection.

Part of the DC Comics Graphic Novel Collection.
The title story sees the various members of the supervillain group known as the Rogues errupt into open conflict with each other with the Flash, not to mention the people of Keystone City, caught in the middle.
The second story here features the debut appearance of the Rogues' leader, Captain Cold.

The Flash's enemies are among the weirder and, to a certain extent, sillier supervillains in DC's pantheon but there's something genuinely engaging about seeing this motley collection of baddies in all-out melee with one another. For much of its length the title story is very much about the Rogues, with Wally West, Bart Allen and Jay Garrick just caught in the middle.

I enjoyed it slightly less when the story does a sudden 90-degree turn into a time-travel tale featuring both Zoom and Reverse-Flash as the antagonists. It does allow a nice moment, however, in which Barry Allen shows up to save Wally (despite having been dead since 1986).

The throwback story 'The Coldest Man on Earth, from 1957, is perfectly fine but is simply an example of a tale from the days of comics when every week saw the introduction of a new themed supervillain.

Fue una muy buena historia de Flash a decir verdad, fue curioso que quien era el protagonista en este era Wally Wesy y no Barry Allen como estoy acostumbrado a ver a Flash pero ahorita gracias a los cómics me estoy acostumbrando bastante también a que Flash sea Barry Allen.

Creo que algo que hizo que no le pusiera cinco estrellas fue el hecho de que no se le puso tanto enfoque a la Guerra de los Rogues como tal, sino que luego se cambió repentinamente a una historia de viajes en el tiempo la cual si bien fue entretenida, siento que termino desplazando de lado el conflicto que supuestamente era el principal y eso hizo que el mismo perdiera bastante el peso.

Por otra parte me gusto todo el contexto que se le daba tanto a los Rogues actuales, ver al Capitán Frío como líder fue algo bueno, y ver lo poco que vimos del enfrentamiento entre villanos nuevos, villanos viejos y los villanos "Reformados" fue algo bueno también debido a que se le dio un enfoque a cada uno al menos un poquito.

También me gusto la participación de otros personajes como el Flautista, la esposa de Hunter Salomon, y Linda, así como Jay y la repentina aparición de Barry y Bart.

No puedo decir que me haya encantado ésta obra, un acercamiento a Flash que no recomendaría para nadie que no fuera ya un entendido en el personaje.

Es un tomo que se limita a hacer aparecer personajes (que no conocemos en su mayoría) y a enfrentarte a Flash con alguno de sus principales villanos. Y luego da un giro para recordar a ciertos portadores anteriores del traje y a algo sucedido un tiempo atrás... que si no conocemos no logra engancharnos.

Estoy seguro de que es un comic que encantó a los habituales del personaje, tiene todos los elementos para hacerlo molón, además de guiños al pasado del personaje. Un comic de esos que disfrutas cuando llevas diez o veinte comics de flash (arcos argumentales) y ya estás hecho con el personaje, sus encarnaciones y sus villanos.

En cambio, si eres nuevo con el velocista la cosa pierde mucho, quedándose en un entretenido comic de acción que va a más y que cuenta con un dibujo muy chulo y acorde, tanto al personaje como a la historia que se nos cuenta.

Lo recomiendo? No, seguro que hay mejores comics con los que acercarse a Flash

Mais quel final ! On se rend compte ici du talent de Johns, je me répète avec mes précédentes reviews de son run, mais toute les intrigues amène à ce moment, que ce soit l'apparition de Zoom, la tragédie avec Linda, l'histoire de l'identité secrète de Wally, le secret de Barry avec Top, Identity Crisis, tout est si bien lié que tout reste cohérent et fascinant.

Il est impossible de ne pas être surpris dans le combat final, mais en même temps il s'agit de l'âme même de Flash. Les clins d'oeils, les références directs (Oh, The Trial of the Flash !) rajoutent un côté épique que je n'ai pas revu dans les comics depuis un bon moment.

Et Porter ! Quel step up, il y a eu quelques issues un peu faible je trouve, mais ce final, la mise en scène de Zoom et de son combat est magnifique, les poses sont dynamiques, l'action ne s'arrête pas, et malgré tout nous avons des tonnes de détails à chercher dans les arrière plans.

C'est du grand comics, du grand Flash !

Pucha historia tan enredada. Tal vez requiere mucho más conocimiento previo para entenderla. En el libro tratan de ponerlo a uno en contexto pero realmente es un gran enredo si uno no es gran lector de Flash. Con todo lo de viajes en el tiempo e historias paralelas ... Tal vez tenga que volverlo a leer ahora ya teniendo el contexto general en la cabeza.

A great sense of nostalgia for good old Flash comics lead me to this; and although is well served, it lacked spice. The argument is too convoluted, requires to inow a lot of old Flash comics, and its resolution brings a huge deus-ex-machina argument. Entertaining yet dissapointing.

Una gran forma de acabar el run de Geoff Johns (aunque posteriormente volviera para escribir obras como Flash: Rebirth y Flashpoint). Las etapas de Mark Waid y Geoff Johns son geniales.
