Hawkman and Hawkgirl have lived many lives over the centuries, all ending in a painful death. As the mystic Highwayman comes to St. Roch, seeking to claim Hawkmans tortured soul, its a deadly battle for survival. But first, the Winged Wonders must survive a revenge-seeking Thanagarian Hawkwoman and then a confrontation with the powerful Black Adam.
This was a wild ikr read as we see the return of Shayera Thal and she is looking for Katar and it results in a big battle between them all and then the stuff with what happened and then fighting "Byth rok" and we get to see Carter's past lives being explored and that's always fun and finally when he goes up against "Headhunter" a new villain and how that challenges him psychologically and his relationship with Kendra. So yeah a fun volume with lots of familiar elements but also new stuff and it really gets inside the mind of Carter and explores who Hawkman really is! So a definite recommend from me!
Hawkman is a bit like the Highlander except that he dies and is reborn over and over again, retaining his memories and powers received from an alien metal (which changed him centuries ago in ancient Egypt). His vast cultural experiences make him an excellent archaelogist, but he is growing a little bit tired of his eternal quest against evil, and tired of living in general. And he also has to figure out his complex relationship with "Hawkgirl," who is stuck in the same pattern of reincarnation. I like the artwork and storyline, although I feel like I've missed a few things by jumping into this series later on. Like the tension he has with Black Adam and "Hawkwoman."
Geoff Johns had "it" even back then. Takes a convoluted and abused character whom he makes compelling by boiling him down to the basics. It sounds so simple but it's something Johns has done time and time again.
Rag Morales did most of the art in this book and it's also really solid work. I wish he was still working more today.
Quite the disappointment...trying desperately to make the character interesting with convoluted backstories of reincarnation....no wonder hawkman can never catch on. The last 8 pages of full page art saved it from a one star.
I have to go back and see if I like anything of geoff johns....maybe it is just his style that I don't like
A fantastic read that had me turning the pages as fast as I could, and in the end it left me hanging, wanting more, and finding only an unresolved story that forces me to follow it to the next volume. Once more Geoff Johns delivers a truly fantastic reading experience!
Not much of a Hawkman fan but I wanted to know more about him and was happily surprised. The whole past lives comes to the forefront very well. Really enjoyed reading about Kendra as well. B
