A Wonderful Choice for Early Educators’ Classroom Libraries!
As a primary grade teacher, I am constantly on the lookout for engaging texts that students will be able to read independently and with confidence - this is it! This book is a charming blend of fiction and nonfiction (the story of Siv and an important lesson she has learned, with informational text about sloths and other animals native to the rain forests appearing at the end of the book). I especially appreciated the author’s emphasis on using sight words in context. These are the words young children are introduced to at an early age. It can be difficult for some young readers to transfer learned words (see, the, and, you, etc) from isolation to sentences, and the author made the INTENTIONAL decision here to bold them and make them meaningful for young learners. The text is also simple enough for young children to feel confident reading on their own. Comprehension can also be touched upon- lots of key details to recall about the main character, author’s message, and identifying character change. A great mentor text for teachers! A must buy!
This sweet story about a three toed sloth is not only adorable, it also teaches a lesson about accepting ourselves. I like all the fun facts at the end of the book too. High frequency words are bolded in the story to help early readings with word recognition. It's a fun book for kids to read and learn at the same time.
