In The Silent Patient, Alicia Berenson is a well-known painter who murdered her husband six years ago and hasn't spoken a word since. He was found bound to a chair with gunshot wounds to his face, and she was convicted soon thereafter. Theo Faber is a psychotherapist who hopes to treat Alicia and uncover the mystery behind her motives for killing her husband. As they sit in silence, the main clue he has is a painting she completed. She titled it Alcestis, named after a heroine in Greek mythology who sacrifices her life to save her husband.
There has been plenty of hype on this book. An objective read shows that all that is misplaced. If you are an avid reader of fiction and thrillers, you will feel the artificially constructed sequences, scenes and dialogues. The language too, is plain and is common to most of the thriller books. Almost every alternate sentence in the conversations, ends with a question: like, is it not? Does it not? Was he? Could it be? … ad nauseam. The twists in the story appear to be highly contrived, or, “manufactured”. One person, single-handedly tying up two persons to chairs is unrealistic, even for story. The story too is bleak and black. It is about a psychotherapist and a patient. After reading the book, the reader may most probably decide never to go to a psychotherapist in his life. OK, if you want some fun reading for the week end, and no classical books are at hand. This is an honest, unbiased (please note) review.
I loved the psychology of the book. While you are reading, you are trying to fit these characters, who are like chess pieces, into play. The reader has sympathy towards most of the characters.. but you are not always sure why, or if that character deserves your sympathy. A stressful plot throughout the whole book keeps you entertained and alert.
Really enjoyed this story - the phycological aspect has me hooked and the twists and turns at the end had me mouth open gasping. A man who has clearly been dealt a hard hand in life but has found his happy ending (or so it seems). This story follows his life. His marriage, his therapy bit most significantly his work. A pshyco therapist with a mission to help a patient who out of the blue killed her husband and has not uttered a word since. Follow him as he digs deeper, into not only her psyche but also his. A great read which had me hooked.
