“Dax Thatcher?” I ask. “But isn’t he sorta. . .old?”
Ugh. Celebrities. I mean, I know I took a job as a reporter for the Celebrity and Pop Culture department of our magazine, but it was just supposed to be a stepping stone to the more real stuff.
Despite the fact that Dax Thatcher was the subject of many of my teen fantasies—and I may or may not have an entire playlist made up of his music—he’s still just another star.
Until I meet him. Until his golden eyes pierce through me that day on his Malibu deck. Until I find myself having dinner with him, going backstage with him, lying on the beach with him, telling him my deepest secrets.
And then I remember my assignment: a four-issue feature on Dax Thatcher. . .and his supermodel fiancée. Yep, he’s getting hitched.
I have to focus. I’m a serious journalist, and he is mere months from walking down the aisle with someone else. But that doesn’t stop me from wondering what those tattooed arms might feel like wrapped around me, or how soft the sheets on his California king bed are.
Yikes. This celebrity stuff might be a little more real than I thought.
Off the Record by Author Taylor Danae Colbert is simply the must read book of the summer. Filled with pure energy it strategically infuses music and romance together with ease. ”If I gave you all the answers at once, you wouldn’t come back,” he whispers in my ear.
Oh my, my, my! What an adorable book! Off the Record is my second read from Taylor Danae Colbert, with It Goes Without Saying being the first. Honestly, I didn’t enjoy It Goes without Saying very much because I had trouble connecting with the characters and the whole plot. Therefore, I’m completely blown away by how incredibly amazing this book is.
Off the Record features small town, rockstar-journalist kind of romance. Dax is a successful rockstar musician; he’s popular and charming, just like all the rockstars out there, and he’s engaged with an international supermodel. Enter Shayna. Shayna, a.k.a. “Shay,” is a high maintenance journalist for a famous entertainment magazine. She’s assigned to interview Dax for their exclusive report on his latest updates, from his rockstar career path to his personal life.
I definitely didn’t sense the chemistry between Dax and Shay at first because she was apparently so oblivious to his charisma and sexy personal traits. Interestingly, somewhere in between their interview schedule, Dax started subtly teasing her…in a rather harmless way. Nothing jeopardized his romantic life with that supermodel, yet. It’s not hard to imagine that Dax and Shay’s constant meeting and “interviewing” turned out to be some sort of dates, and much later, something much more intense and intimate. They both experienced the climate of their relationship and with everything so messed up (I mean, the gossips, the rumors, and the paparazzi), they fell in love uncontrollably eventually.
Despite there was an 11-year age gap between Dax and Shay, I could somehow look beyond it and fully focus on their slow-burn romantic development. What I liked most about their relationship was the fact that Shay’s boldness knew no boundaries. She was fearless, feisty, and was definitely the best representative of a strong female character. The juiciest part of this book was the twist by the end of the story. Dax’s supermodel fiancée’s jaw-dropping secret-reveal blew my mind and I seriously couldn’t stop gaping at the scene. The ending was literally one of the most satisfying endings I’ve ever read and I couldn’t be happier for both Dax and Shay. They totally got the happily ever after they deserved.
Besides, the small proportion of LGBTQ+ reference in the story also added spice to the whole story. This book showed depth in the contemporary romance genre and I was lucky to have read Taylor’s third novel earlier than the mass public. If I could make a change to the original story, I’d certainly create Dax’s playlist! I mean, the only thing missing from this book was a real soundtrack designed specifically for Dax the Karma-rockstar. The beautiful lyrics, CHECK! The concreate song structures/concepts, CHECK! The title, the profound meaning, the whole package for the songs, CHECK! CHECK! CHECK! Now we just needed some melody and music to go with the above elements and I could die held my breath happily.
All in all, it was an absolute delight to read Off the Record and I would 100% HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to everyone. What’s more, thanks to this amazing book, I couldn’t wait to read more of Taylor’s future works! Her writing style made the entire story easy to fall in love with and I was sure there’d be more fabulous books from her to come.
***Huge thanks to Taylor for generously providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.***
Taylor Danae Colbert has written a rock star romance on pitch for giving you all the kicks -- with a twist or two. There's a little bit of a "triangle" plot to it, yet not really. Nothing that makes you cringe or tear up your concert ticket. There's also an 11-year age gap between the two main characters, Shay Kellner and Dax Thatcher. Age gaps sometimes are a negative for me. Here, I didn't even give it a thought. He's a gorgeous rocker and she's actively pursuing a career as a journalist. One interview and the sparks are flying (literally) between LA and NYC. Oh there's some sad and angsty issues that must be dealt with, but for the most part this is one rock romance that is delightful and fun-to-read. I love the witty dialogue between Dax and Shay. And the slow burn is worth the eventual fire.
But before the final beat ends, and just when they seem to be heading for an idyllic ending, suddenly you're hit with a gut-punching surprise. I totally wasn't expecting it either.
A rock solid performance that dazzled this reader. One of my best discoveries on Kindle Unlimited from a new-to-me-author.

Review: Off the Record is the third book I have had the pleasure of reading by the lovely Taylor Danae Colbert. When receiving my ARC to review it’s safe to say I definitely had high hopes for Off the Record. I have to say this is also my favourite cover out of all three of the books and I love how it relates to the story line.
I am a music lover myself so I was excited that I was about to read a book with the theme of music throughout. I found that I was able to relate to the book because like the characters, music has also been a big influence in my life.
When reading the other two books by Taylor, I was drawn in straight away and hooked by the end of chapter one. Off the Record however started a little different for me. I found by the end of chapter 1 I had not connected with the book in a way I wish I had. I was unsure as to how I would find the rest of the book, but I now can safely say, Taylor didn’t leave me disappointed at all!
I found Shay, the female lead easy to connect with as I could relate to her on so many levels. Same age, same interest and similar in personalities. Shay is not your typical female lead because she is brash, un-lady like and willing to be herself, this I find appealing in a character. As for Dax, well he was just the perfect man. A Rockstar, covered in tattoos, dark and handsome. I was drawn to him straight away but I also could tell there would be more to this character and I was eager to know his story. Despite being a cheeky flirt, I found that Dax had a very vulnerable side which stopped him from becoming the typical bad boy that everyone wants. The only criticism I have for Dax is that I just felt he was portrayed a lot younger than he actually was, but maybe this was intended?
I loved how Dax and Shay met, it had a similar feel to how Anna and Christian meet in Fifty Shades of Grey, however Shay was definitely more bad ass and held her own. You could feel the chemistry growing between the characters and I felt frustrated for them at times. Half way through the book, the sexual tension between the characters had really heated up to the point I was practically screaming for things to finally explode between them. When things finally did happen, lets just say it was very intense between the characters.
So, despite Chapter 1 not drawing me in, it’s safe to say the more I read the more I was hooked. The short, snappy chapters flew by and with each one I become more enthralled. The book had the right amount of pace with a down to earth style of writing which I really find works for this author. The storyline between the characters was a little predictable. You knew that Shay would fall for Dax and that obstacles would then be thrown to stop them being together before they work it out, but in all honesty, when you read one of Taylor’s books you don’t really care about this because the story line is so addictive.
There was a couple of curve balls that were cleverly thrown in there. I really didn’t expect the twist in the story and the bigger twist before the end definitely caught me off guard too, I love to be kept on my toes!
So, to summarise Off the Record I would say it is a lovey read, with characters you can’t help but like. The book was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster and had some lovely sayings along the way, my heart strings were definitely tugged at. Taylor also raises awareness of Drug Addiction and depression which is something we see a lot of in today’s society. Praise once more for Taylor Danae Colbert!
Taylor Danae Colbert always surprises her readers with her books. While most authors tend to stick with one genre, she experiments with her writing! That definitely pays off. So far she's done a book with best friends to lovers, a book with lots of girl power and now one with rock stars. It seems like there's nothing she can't do!
Shay is a journalist who would love to step up to write about world news, but took a job working as a reporter for Celebrity and Pop Culture department of the magazine. She's hoping this will be the stepping stone she needs to get further. Shay knows she's good at what she does and is confident in her way of working. That changes a bit when she meets Dax.
Dax is a rock star who is slowly trying to build up his career again and is about to get married to a super model. He was like your typical rock star. Dax partied a lot and his drug use went a bit too far, but that's in the past and he's doing good. He really got a place in my heart early on in the book. I first thought he was going to be arrogant (their first interview wasn't that great), but he's just one big softy! Dax doesn't take anything for granted and gives back in many ways! After some issues in his past, he's still dealing with things in his own way.
My favorite part of Off the Record was the connection between Dax and Shay! The chemistry was there from the start, but didn't feel fake. I loved how even though she was there to interview him, he trusted her with information that wasn't really known to the public. On top of that he really wanted to get to know who she was. Shay isn't your typical reporter either who will use anything to get on top. She saw Dax as more than just a celebrity and wouldn't ever abuse the connection she had with him.
I had a big smile on my face while reading most of this book and that's just because how sweet and genuine everything felt. Yes, he is engaged, but you will just have to read to see how that all plays out. Off the Record is filled with amazing characters who are very genuine, hot rock stars, humor, some amazing lyrics, romance and even a few steamy moments! On top of that, Off the Record doesn't have your typical happily ever after. I loved how this book showcased that even with a happily ever after there can be some bumps along the way, but with people you love in your corner, anything is possible!
Dax Thatcher may have been a big star some decades ago, but he still got the groove, the voice and the fanbase from this millennium. He had a new song and album coming out, and a supermodel fiancee in his arms. What more could he ask for? Well, an interview with Shay will eventually change all of this, but up to what extent?
Off The Record by Taylor Danae Colbert is a rockstar romance with the kind of love triangle that you would actually support and love. And then there's age gap, both between Dax and his fiance, and Dax with Shay. But so what, age gap wasn't the big deal here. I love stories where the main characters have May-December love affair. This rockstar story got it and nailed it. The love triangle I mentioned above - o.m.g, it was beautiful. I know, I know, love triangles are cliche and too used up already, but I assure you, between Dax, Annaliese and Shay, you won't regret loving these three together.
Congrats to another hit from TDC and cheers to so much more!!
From the very beginning, I loved this book. The main characters met in an interesting way (an interview) and everything blossomed from there. It was a slow burn romance that kept you wanting more and more and then when you finally get it, it’s perfection. I was rooting for Shay and Dax from the second they met.
I loved their encounters, I loved their conversations, and I just loved this story! You truly can’t help but root for them!! There was a BIG curveball that I didn’t see coming and it was just perfect because it all made so much more sense.
This is a top read of 2019 for me, I really loved this book and will for sure be reading more of Taylor’s books!
*I received an ARC of this book, and this is my honest review*
Shayna Kellner is a journalist from Brooklyn whose family loves rock and roll music. She grew up listening to 90s band Karma, so when she’s asked by her boss to interview Dax Thatcher, their lead singer, in a multiple part interview series she should be excited right? —wrong.
Shay is not excited because she wants to be writing about something substantial, not “90s has beens” that are marrying international superstars. But off she flies to LA. She interviews him, & of course he is HOT. Of course he is TALENTED. How can she resist him?
That’s all I’m going to say because I will literally give it all away. Just know that Dax Thatcher is my favorite man of all the men T.D. Colbert has written (& I love the men she writes about!) so do with that information what you will.
Read this book. Read all of T.D. Colbert’s books. You won’t regret it.

This is my favorite story by Taylor! I love a good rock star romance. I loved the connection between Dax & Shay. It was funny, it was heartwarming, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching their relationship develop.
Off the record, baby, you’re the best damn interview I ever had.”
Dax Thatcher was a big hit in the nineties with his band Karma. After a troubled period and a stay in a rehabilitation clinic, his band broke up. Leaving for a solo career, he now has a new album about to be released, produces young talent and has composed several hits. But the pinnacle of his career was in the past, he is still a celebrity but is no longer a rock star. But his personal life will put him in the spotlight again, after all he is engaged to the new sensation of the fashion world, supermodel Annaliese Michaels. Shayna works in a celebrity magazine, although aspiring to write more serious stories. Her next assignment? Write an article about Dax and his engagement. Interviewing an "old" star who is in the media because of a relationship was not exactly what she expected. Admit that she's a fan of his songs and that despite the age difference he's still an interesting man? This will never happen. In sunny Malibu, Shayna will have to put all her experience as a reporter to the test, after all interviewing Dax will be harder than she imagines. Some subjects are forbidden, which spark her interest in. And her clinical look will catch on to an interesting question: why does Dax seem uncomfortable talking about his fiancee and his smile seems fake? What secrets are the couple hiding? As the interview progresses, Dax and Shayna build a bond and as he shows his true story, an unknown, human side of this man comes to the surface. But such an approach also stirs up feelings, not to mention the absurd chemistry between them. But Shayna needs to remember one huge detail: Dax is engaged. Shayna will have the courage to throw everything up and fight for what she wants or the world of celebrities will be too much for her to deal with? I loved the characters, the whole construction of the approach of Dax and Shayna was done in a natural way without being forced. They were interested in each other at first sight, but it was the approach, the secrets and exchanged experiences that made them identify with each other. I found the plot of Annaliese a little forced, nowadays I do not understand her fear. Dax was the soul of the book, his life was not easy, trust was a delicate matter for him, his current situation left him with no way out and his relapse in the end distressed me. He was a human character, with several faults, who made mistakes but who knew how to ask for help when needed. Shayna found herself in a difficult situation that could hurt her career and reputation but chose what most mattered by listening to her heart. A novel with bits of drama, where the human side of the characters was the big theme.
This story rocked my heart so hard. The rock and roll fangirl inside of me couldn't get enough of this story.
The main characters in the story have really great development. I adored Dax and Shay both. Shay was a take-charge type of girl that doesn't hold much of anything back. Although she had her personal insecurities, she was very confident otherwise. Especially when it came to doing her job. She was motivated and hard working. Dax's character probably had the most growth. Throughout the story, we get to glimpse his entire life when he shares it with Shay. He takes Shay to his hometown, to visit his aunt, and to see the first home that he lived in when he moved to California. We get a little bit of his history piece by piece throughout the story. He is a nice little mystery that Shay has to unravel. Dax was very compassionate. I liked that his dark past made him a better person instead of worse. He has flaws and it makes him very real. The side characters were lovely as well. Every character had their part to play and there wasn't anyone that felt like filler.
I loved the family aspect this story shows. Shay's parents were wonderful. I have to admit that the scene where Dax and Shay show up to her parents' house and surprise them made me laugh so hard. I had to reread that scene several times. I liked that Shay was close to her family. I also liked that she was kind to her sister even though her sister was a total snotface to her. I understand that her sister had some mental health issues, which was mildly explored. I also loved the relationship that Dax had with his aunt. And I liked that it showed how family isn't only those that share your blood. The boys at the Boys Center of Baltimore that Dax owned for at-risk youth were just as much a family to Dax as his aunt was.
I really liked the plot of this story. I admit that I guessed something amiss with Dax and Annaliese's engagement, but I hadn't pegged the reasoning behind it. Everything played out really great plot-wise. I really liked that even though this is a fairly short book, the pacing of the story was perfect. It didn't feel rushed at all, nor did it feel like anything was missing.
The romance in this story is a slow-burn that gets under your skin and simmers. The chemistry between Dax and Shay was UH-MAY-ZING and I loved that it didn't feel forced or unrealistic. It was totally genuine and smooth. Dax and Shay's personalities meshed very well together. It was easy for them to build trust and be real with each other. Their dialogues and banter were very riveting. It was so easy to like them as a couple, even before they were one. I was rooting for them the entire time.
There was some great representation in this story. Other than the fantastic family representation there was also LGBTQ representation and mental health and substance abuse representation. I don't want to be too spoilery, but I liked that there was a character that came out as gay in a very public way because it was done on their own terms. This character was tired of hiding who they were and didn't want to punish the ones that she cared for by hiding. I liked where the story went with Dax's addiction issues. The way that Shay handled and supported him in the story was perfect. His issues were addressed and she made sure to let him know that he needed to go to therapy for himself and not for her. I do wish that more had been explored with Cara's mental health issues, or that her suicide attempt had been addressed more.
Overall, this is a swoon-worthy story with a slow-burn romance that will rock your socks off. (And, well, maybe more than your socks.) This story has great plotting and characters that really speak to the reader. This was my first time reading a book by this author, but it will not be my last. I definitely recommend this one! It will kickstart your rock-n-rollin' heart.
I’ve never read a TDC book before. She took my heart on an adventure that I couldn’t put down. I couldn’t walk away from. From the beginning, I cheered for Shay and Dax. And I continued to the very last page. Unputdownable, and a twist I didn’t see coming, I clung to each page.
As a fan of rockstar romances I found myself becoming quickly immersed in the glittery world that hides many secrets and that fuels this story of forbidden romance. It’s a romance that sparks the moment a rocker, once at the top of the charts and now seeking a return there, meets the young reporter who brings out all his secrets while making his heart pound and from there readers will be taken on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. With an immensely appealing main couple, and a few surprising turns along the way, I was glued to the pages and breathless by the end as I look forward to reading more from this new-to-me author.
Shay Kellner’s always wanted to leave her mark, writing articles from the heart that affect people. Being tasked with writing a series of articles about a rockstar returning to the spotlight felt a bit too fluffy...until she discovered the name of the rockstar. Dax Thatcher fueled many of her teenage dreams so meeting him in the flesh is a dream come true. It’s an assignment that ultimately changes both of their lives irrevocably, laying both of their hearts on the line, with his moment in the spotlight really putting them to the test. Shay’s an immensely likable heroine, a dutiful daughter and supportive sister despite her sister’s constant put-downs. She’s a reporter who values the truth and never wants to use her words to hurt others, which sets her apart from many of the other entertainment reporters who value sleaze and superficiality. Looking past the facade is what binds her and Dax together from the start as she brings out the truth about his painful past, giving him a sense of safety while he reveals those truths. I appreciated that Shay struggled with her growing feelings for Dax, felt guilt over wanting him while he was engaged. It spoke volumes about her good character but it will definitely be an issue for some. There are surprising reasons behind his engagement though and I hope readers can hang in there as it’s an immensely satisfying culmination to the triangle of Shay, Dax, and Annaliese. Through it all Shay remained the kind of heroine you can’t help but like. She’s strong-willed, gives as good as she gets when standing up for herself, and is a strong support when Dax needs her most.
Dax Thatcher came from a tragic past, one that’s slowly revealed through Shay’s questions and his need to connect to her on a level of honesty. Twenty years ago he was at the top of the music world, beloved by all, until addiction landed him at the bottom and in need of rehab. The years since have made him a different man, one who helps others without wanting recognition, while helping others reach the top of the charts. He too is now ready to regain the spotlight with a new album and marriage to a glamorous supermodel, all of which the world wants to know about. The moment he meets reporter Shay sparks fly as she has a profound affect on him, fueling his soul like nothing else has since he first started singing and it’s a slow burn between them from that moment on. Though he wants to do right by Annaliese it’s clear that he and Shay are destined to be together as he lets her see the truths he’s kept hidden from the world. As he shows her bits of his childhood I found myself drawn to him, hurting for all the painful moments he experienced. Death and deception early on brought him low and it was heartbreaking to see the fallout as his problems with addiction were never sugarcoated. On the outside Dax is a sexy rocker oozing strength, but behind that facade is a man still dealing with loss and just wanting to be loved. I ached for all he’d been through, and for all his re-emergence is costing him emotionally now. Shay is just the woman he needs as his future is once again left in limbo after a shocking twist late in the story.
This story is told from Shay’s POV which gave us deep insight into her and her family, a family that’s not quite perfect but supportive of each other when the chips are down. That POV showed her to be a heroine you want to root for every step of the way as she’s easily relatable and is living a dream many of us have...falling in love with a rockstar. It’s a rocky romance though, one some readers might frown upon, but I was fully on board as it was made clear how perfect they are for each other. I wish the author had spent as much time in Dax’s head though as he was equally compelling. With a heartbreaking past and a future that he’s struggling with it would’ve made for a richer story discovering what demons drive him. When it comes to the romance the author was pitch perfect. Early flirting led to unrelenting sexual tension that left me parched before they finally gave into temptation. Scorching interludes balanced with intense emotions and truths being revealed kept me turning the pages frantically. Surrounding this engaging main couple was an equally entertaining cast of secondary characters. Among those who left their mark the most were Dax’s assistant James, a young man with a sad past who owes everything to his boss. He was sweet and charming. The other character is supermodel Annaliese Michaels, a woman with secrets of her own. She’s portrayed as a perfect angel but I was left disappointed by her as she was willing to sacrifice others for her fame. Just when I’d given up on her though, she redeemed herself in a grand gesture that had me cheering. On a whole this was an exhilarating read full of surprising twists and intense emotions. Issues of addiction were also dealt with in a realistic manner that added to the emotional impact of Dax and Shay’s romance. This was my first time reading Ms. Colbert but it won’t be the last in a romance that took me to heartbreaking lows before giving me an immensely satisfying conclusion.
If you ask Shay Kellner she would much rather spend her days writing stories about current events, in other-wards relevant news with meaning. Not writing glitz and glam pieces about celebrities. You know, stories about who wore what best, whose hooking up with who, or which celeb is headed down the aisle.
But, sometimes you have to do things you don't necessarily want to, to get where you want to be... which explains her current situation to a tee. She is working on a special story about music legend Dax Thatcher and his blushing bride-to-be Annalise Michaels. While she has to admit spending time with the sexy rock star is somewhat appealing, it's not exactly a story she would prefer penning. He has had a starring role in her fantasies since she was a teen, but swooning over him in front of his bride-to-be probably isn't the best way to get her story. So she is just going to have to keep her crush under-wraps and focus on the task at hand. Which sounds easy enough... that is until she is face to face with the sexy rock God!
Off the Record is uber sexy little page-turner that will keep you mesmerized from the first page until the last! This first time read did not disappoint, it had angst to torture the heart, unexpected twists and turns, drama to keep me engaged, and steamy scenes that scorched my fingertips! I loved meeting this couple, they had amazing chemistry, came with a palpable feel, and I found them very easy to connect to. This is by far one of my favorite reads so far this year, it had everything I want in a story, and SO much more! I highly recommend you get your hands on this one, it's perfectly penned words are sure to leave your heart happy!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
Off the Record features a pop culture and entertainment reporter, Shay. She's assigned to a series of interviews with musician Dax about his upcoming marriage to a super model and his new album. There are sparks at the initial meeting when he rebuffs her questions and she stands up to him. They get to know each other during the first two thirds of the book as they visit Dax's old neighborhoods, meet each other's families and spend time at the beach. There's a lot of chemistry and longing, along with the understanding that any relationship is forbidden because Dax is engaged.
The book is told from Shay's single perspective. While this device allows the author to conceal major plot surprises from both Shay and the readers, I think it would have been more interesting to get Dax's point of view.
Drug addiction and recovery are a theme. While there are very brief references to substance abuse during the first three quarters of the book, the author tries to address the ongoing challenges of recovery and the risk of relapse during the last 30 pages of the book. It felt very condensed and hurried. I thought that issue warranted being more integrated with the main story.
I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review, and I've never been more happy to do so.
Off the Record is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time, and it’s now in my top ten books of all time. It’s just that good. The perfect blend of romance, seduction, mystery, a surprise twist, and character development add to the richness of this story. And the twist shocked me, which is really hard to do!
Shay’s character really developed throughout the story, and in the last pages you can see how she’s grown and stepped into her truest self. I actually teared up. I loved that she’s strong and powerful while not being afraid to show Dax how she feels.
Dax is a swoon-worthy musician with a heart of gold and a difficult past. Throughout the book he has a secret, which when revealed is a complete shocker, but it’s truly what makes this story great.
Shay and Dax are incredibly hot together, and their story was sexy and romantic, a little heartbreaking, and beautiful all at the same time. They had just the right blend of passion and love to make it believable but still just plain fun. I was smiling throughout the book while I read it, then again just thinking about it. The end had me grinning ear-to-ear, literally laughing because I was so happy that I’d read this book. If you love steamy romance with a heart AND soul, this is a must-read. I would give it ten stars if I could!
If I'm honest, I thought this book was going to be awful. The whole fangirl-reporter-meets-hot-rockstar-and-falls-hopelessly-in-love is a bit of a clichéd story line. I didn't know what to expect. So I'm pleased to say that I'm anything but disappointed. Colbert took such unexpected turns that it really was impossible to put down this book (yet another cliché that you need not fear; it's truly the only way to explain the savage need to turn the page for more). I was hooked on Shayna from the first paragraph, she is such an easy character to identify with. Her adventure is rocky and a bit disastrous, but beautiful nonetheless. A typical love story you're sure to fall in love with. ; )
I was sent an ARC to get a first read on this book and I loved the story, I was unable to stop reading and I finished in a day. After I finished reading I wanted more!
The story is about a young woman, Shay Kellner, who is a reporter for an entertainment magazine. She really wants to write about current events such as politics and what is happening in the world versus what diet a celebrity is currently doing. She gets a big assignment to write a special the magazine is doing about a 90’s rock star, Dax Thatcher, who is about to marry America’s sweetheart, Annalises Michaels. This could be a big opportunity for Shay to move up in the world of reporting. She takes on the assignment and upon first meeting Dax there is a connection between them instantly. The more she gets to know him the more she falls for him, and he begins to get her to open up about her life and the secrets she carries. Shay starts to feel torn between her feelings for Dax, she has to remind herself he is off limits, he belongs to someone else.
Dax Thatcher is what people in Hollywood would call a B list celebrity, still we’ll known, but not very popular. He is from a 90’s rock band that made it big, but then had a down fall that lead for the band to break up, and has since been trying to make a comeback. When he meets Shay to begin the interview about his upcoming nuptials with Annalises, he begins to open up about what happened that lead the band to break up, revealing information about himself that he has never told anyone. He lets Shay into his life and she begins to see a side to him that the world including Annalises doesn’t get to see. They start to fall for one another, but Dax carries a secret that is so big he is unable to let Shay in on, and Shay is struggling with guilt for feelings she has for Dax.
I would definitely recommend this read, I loved the connection with Shay and Dax. There is a little mystery and characters that are very memorable. The story is about how love is not perfect, it is about staying by someone’s side when they need it the most, being able to catch someone when they are falling.
this feels so forced to me and i'm so uncomfortable with the whole flirting with the guy while thinking he's engaged thing plus the writing in itself is meh at best!
The author provided me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I just finished this story and it is the first one I have read by Taylor. We are introduced to Shay, a big city reporter covering pop culture, and Dax, the supposed washed-up rockstar that's breaking news because he's marrying the sexiest model in the industry. Shay has been assigned to cover the story of their engagement and wedding and she's not one bit starstruck. Unless you consider that she's been Dax's biggest fan most of her life.
What could go wrong with that? Well they could be attracted to each other. Check! They could spend lots of time together. Check! Check! They could madly fall for one another. Check! Check! Check!
I sped through this one because it moved quickly and I greatly enjoyed the slow-burn build-up of attraction between Shay and Dax during their interviews and subsequent non-"dates" they needed to keep having... ya know, to get the story going.
The only issue I had with the story, was it felt choppy in certain places. Jumped quickly between certain scenes and location, but no worries - it definitely does not detract from the story or the fantastic build.
Contemporary romance fans will enjoy this modern take on fan-girl falls for rock-star!
I have to say this is my favorite TDC book to date.
Shay is a reporter for an entertainment magazine, which isn't the type of reporting she wants to be doing. But.....she is being assigned a big story for the magazine interviewing the hollywood newly engaged IT couple right now. So Shay goes off to L.A. to interview Dax and his fiance' for a big spread in the magazine.
Dax is a rock star back in the day, about to marry a supermodel. But there is something about Dax that makes her curious. They share accidental innocent touches but it feels like so much more. Its complicated, but they have that chemistry when they spend time together. She's torn and tries really hard to keep her feelings at bay and to stay professional, but he keeps pulling her in, confusing her even more.
I really enjoyed this story. It kept me on my toes, little twists and turns, shock and awe. Sometimes what you see isn’t the full story. She did a fantastic job at writing Dax and Shay's love story.
Taylor is a new to me Author, I am going to be as honest as I can. Normally I do not do a negative review. I also will not be mean and nasty. But I will be honest. This book did not hold my interest. I couldn't get past 30% on my kindle. I'm sorry
Shay Kellner is a girl I could be friends with. She is snarky and sweet all at the same time. She loves her family tremendously and lives her life like any good New Yorker would, at full speed breathing in the congested NYC air. Her self deprecating humor had me laughing because sweat jokes are always funny.
"I know I'm not a stop-you-in-your-tracks stunner, but I'm decent. I'm definitely a right-swipe. At least, I think..."
Dax Thatcher has had a tough life leading up to his 90's fame. He struggles as so many do with addiction and all the demons that come with it. His background endeared him to me and I felt like he was a well developed character flaws and all. He had some seriously swoony moments with Shay which I appreciated.
"I don't know if I'll ever be fully ready for you, Shay"
I struggled with the plot of this book. Emotional reliance and heavy flirting as done in this story is cheating. They became so connected that the boundaries that should have been there knowing he was engaged just went out the window. Although things were not what they seemed that doesn't change the fact that he was engaged. It doesn't make it okay once the secrets and details come out. Sorry I'll climb off my soapbox now but I just couldn't not acknowledge it. Dax's addiction is something that is mentioned in passing and then all of a sudden comes to the forefront and felt almost like an after thought that was stuck in.
Overall Off The Record by Taylor Danae Colbert was a well written rock star romance that just didn't hit the mark for me. The characters were great and I appreciated their quirks but the plot wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
So, I normally won't read books that could potentially have cheating no matter how great the reviews.... Based on the blurb on this book, I was pretty sure there would be something of that nature in this story, but it sucked me in and I downloaded it anyway. I let it sit in my library for several weeks, too. I started it this evening when I got home from work and I couldn't put it down. Finished it in one sitting. Dax Thatcher, just WOW! I had to read more, I could so easily picture the scenes in my head. The "almost kisses", the sly innuendo, and just overall heat the author wrote in to him as a character. I think I fell in love with him a little bit myself. And, handling the issue of addiction, I liked how the author also made it a point to reinforce that in order to start on the road to recovery, you have to choose to do it for yourself, not just the people in your life. I would definitely recommend this book. Loved it! The author definitely surprised me with the plot twist on the barriers to the H and h relationship. I knew something was up, but I didn't completely expect what happened.
“All because of one interview, right here at this house.”
Off the Record is the very first book I’ve read from Taylor and I’m so glad I did! She is an amazing new author. This book held my attention easily from first to last page. Shay is a celebrity journalist assigned to interview Dax. Dax is an older musician who is engaged to a supermodel. When Shay begins her interview with Dax she is surprised how easy it is to talk to him, and he is happy to have found the one journalist who doesn’t push him for a story he’s not willing to tell. They quickly become more than a working couple they became friends. Before they realize it they are stealing chances to be together and calling each other often. Shay begins to have serious guilt issues with him being engaged, meanwhile Dax tells her it’s nothing she needs to worry about. As their feelings for one another grow, revelations about Dax’s real life come out and Shay must decide if being with a rockstar is really worth it all...
Yasss! Forbidden love between a strong, sassy woman and a rock star with a tortured soul? Umm, yes please!
I can never get enough of the intense flirtation that comes with forbidden love. And this story was filled to the brim with it! I loved every page!
Taylor Danae Colbert did a great job filling this story with all the best things: swoon-worthy flirtation, music, family, and humor injected at just the right moments.
I loved “watching” Dax and Shay’s romance unfold. Their chemistry is totally on point. It simmers and simmers until it just boils over! And you truly feel their connection from the start. You can’t help but root for them, even considering the obstacles in their way — which are pretty significant, but no spoilers!
And in the spirit of No Spoilers, I can’t even talk about other things that happen that are totally shocking! You’ll just have to read it:) You won’t regret 1-clicking this one!
I would have to give this book a 5 out of a 5-star rating. This is the first book I have liked with 5 stars in quite a while. I loved this book, the author, the main characters, and the story. This is the first book I have read by this author and as I said before I absolutely loved it can't wait to read more of her books. The main female character Shayna had undeniable chemistry with Dax Thatcher that was through the roof even though he was engaged to someone else ( I will leave it like that, you will have to read the book to find out more on the engagement). Shayna was independent, true to herself, confident and loyal to a fault. Dax was charming, a nice person to all his fans and was caring, he had some demons but loved hard (all the way). I definitely recommend this book to people who like to read about rockstar romances, somewhat forbidden, and true love.
I recieved this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Taylor Danae Colbert for this opportunity. This was my first book by her and I hope to read more in the future. I enjoyed this story a lot, even though I’m not always the biggest fan of celebrity/rockstar trope, this story was different for me. Dax and Shay were both really great characters and their connection and chemistry was very much there! Shay seemed like a genuine and sweet person, she was a great reporter not like one on tmz😂 Dax also didn’t see like a typical “celebrity”, he had a great heart and was a wonderful character. This story was even better than the synopsis described. It had “drama” and the “ups and downs” that most romances should have to keep you wanting to read more!
This is the third ARC I have read for Taylor in exchange for an honest review.
Shay and Dax's story was not what I initially expected it would be. I've read a few rock star falls in love with a 'normal' girl stories but this was definitely spun in a different and fresh way. Dax stole the show for me and I love the mystery of his (and I'm trying not to write spoilers) situation... I love the will they/won't they lead up to the end. There were a few cheesy lines of dialogue in the book, more so towards the end but they didn't detract from the scenes for me.
Overall, a solid romantic story. Dax and Shay are very charming!
