Alice Perivale saved the world, now she’s pleased to make a teacup garden. 73 year old Mrs. Perivale is enjoying time with her grandson when her secret vial of dragon’s blood begins to glow brightly, and she fears that things have gone terribly wrong in the magical land of Corevé since she left. Alice loses no time in calling her mighty dragon friend Diovalo out of foreboding, thunderous skies, to land in Hyde Park and whisk her, her six cats, her butler Henderson, and her stunned grandson away.
Armed with stab-tastic knitting needles, her fist high in the air, Alice is certain she’s ready to find and rescue the fire dragons who have vanished without a trace. Her task becomes almost impossible when her company is betrayed, her family is pulled apart, and her identity is splintered, but Alice knows that hope is the brightest light in darkness.
How can she help those who need her most when every step takes her somewhere she never imagined she’d be?
Mrs. Perivale and the Dragon Prince is the second book in the enchanting Mrs. Perivale YA fantasy series. If you’re looking to escape reality for a while with a laugh-out-loud, heart-touching adventure, discover the heroine you never knew you needed today!
This book series is still very wholesome and charming; however, it also very much feels like an after-school special. This book would be great for young readers. It’s chock full of life lesson speeches and feel good moments. The major drawback I have for this installment, however, is that this book the textbook example of “tell, not show”. It’s a lot wordier than it should be so it bogs down the reading experience. Again, for younger readers who are still developing their senses of imagination this is perfect. For me, a thirty-something? Not so much.
That being said, the author has been delayed in getting the sequel out for mental health reasons. That is an understandable explanation. Thus, when he releases the next book I will be reading it as well in solidarity. Until then, cheerio!🧶
The first book was fun and unique. This book starts with a lecture on the value of wisdom in the older generation. The lecture goes for another page then the story continues However, the entire story becomes preaching on how to look at life, valuing others. The concepts are not bad in and of themselves but the book is one large sermon with some story thrown in. Of note, the story ends with an unanswered scene which will lead into the next story. Ì will not be following any of the (probably) many books to follow.
Another wonderful story from Dash! Full of excellent nuggets of wisdom that you can apply in your real life! Having an elder protagonist allows for a different type of perspective and Dash captures this fantastically. Can't wait till the third installment!
While my 3 star rating remains the same as the first book, I must admit I DID enjoy this one better than the first.
My main issue with the first book was that it felt like Mrs. Perivale didn't play that active of a role. I am happy to say that she was much more involved with this one. Taking a more active role in leading her gang and she actually fought in the battle at the end.
We also get to meet Eddie, Mrs. P's grandson in this book. The scenes between him and his grandmother were rather very sweet. I enjoyed those.
I REALLY enjoyed meeting all the different kinds of dragons. Especially the sea dragons. I hope we get to see more of them in future books.
My two main complaints with this book is the villain was very much "Laughs evily while twirling their mustache." Each scene with her was just her monologuing about "I have to capture the dragon prince!" "I must defeat Alice!" "I am so evil! Blah! Blah! Blah!" And we're never told WHY she's doing any of this in first place. Is this just because she's power hungry? Or is there something bigger at play? I imagine we'll find out in future books but for now, its kinda annoying.
I will say though, that the scene where she killed that dragon by poisoning him was pretty horrifying so, kudos for that!
I am also confused as to what the evil sorceress is exactly. It's mentioned she has a tail and other non human like features but they never say if shes a dragon, a human with non human features or what.
My other issue with this book is Murray. Like....WHY was he here? Was it for comedy reasons? Because if so, I fail to find the humor of "Oh look at the funny old man. Wandering around this magical world all confused and not realizing he's not in the real world anymore! Haha!"....like wtf?
The book ended on a cliffhanger so im going to assume that there is more to series. If a third book ever comes out, I'll probably check it out.

Heather's Notes I did not like this story as much as the first one. There was a lot more philosophy in it, and that may be good for young adults but not so much for us older readers. Although I don't know if any young adults would have enjoyed so much. Also the ending was kind of cliffhangery, and I really don't like that. End the book, if it is a series continue the arc not the book. Not sure if I will read more as the come out or not. Also instead of just starting the 1st chapters of some new book you are promoting let a reader now.
This is the first time giving a book a 2 star rating on Goodreads and I feel no shred of guilt in doing so. The first installment in this series was highly enjoyable and I went into this with high hopes and excitement. The idea behind this story was great but was poorly executed. The book was filled with grammatical errors, unnecessary and annoying monologues, and additional characters that needed to simply not exist. The cats whom I grew quite found of in the first installment underwent drastic character changes and not for the better. The most troubling of which was one of the cats becoming the poster child for gay felines. I am not sure why the author thought this would be a great addition to the story but his approach at comedy failed as horribly as the shoddy editing. It's also possible the author was making an attempt at portraying said cat as transgender but either way, it was unnecessary and offensive. The idea behind the third story again sounds great but I will no longer be continuing on with this series.
I really liked Blue Fire Crystal, but I LOVED Dragon Prince! I feel as though this one really finds its feet and stands a bit more solidly than the last one, where it did seem at times like it was still figuring itself out. Here everything's established, but we have a whole new adventure that I found completely delightful! I loved how Mrs. Perivale gets to take not only her grandson along, but the hilariously oblivious old geezer neighbor who's continuous belief that the whole adventure is some theatrical romp in the city park left me wheezing. I also loved that this time around, Mrs. Perivale does seem a bit more 'elderly' than the last one, where she recognizes her limitations a bit more, adding a layer of complexity to her, but it could also be her having so many youngsters around to help her this time.
Not only was it a super-fun sequel, but it sets itself up nicely for the next book, which I eagerly await.
Alright, let's be completely honest here; plot gets confusing. There are multiple story lines at one point, and the last half of the book needs more breaks to keep things separated. HOWEVER this proper English granny, stabby stabbys with knitting needles, her old man butler beats people with an old school umbrella cane, there's a random nearly deaf old man who constantly meanders and can't hear ANYTHING, who confuses the whole magical experience as an afternoon at the park. There are dragons, selfish elves, Thunderbirds, fairies, and cats. Lots of cats. So take a chance or you'll boss out on all the sage old wisdom from these VERY capable older people! It's a heartfelt, funny, quirky adventure that I am so very glad to have stumbled across. One of my favorite lines as the older lady takes her cup full of prescriptions, 'oh dear, I couldn't possibly be sneaky, they'll hear me coming miles away'
I enjoyed a good portion of this book, but it still had a lot of flaws like the first one. I was really glad that the broken English that the Inklings spoke was much less severe than in the last one - it made the book a lot less frustrating to read.
But, unlike the first book, this book was trying to give deep messages on life and wisdom without being deep. The "wisdom" comes across as lectures from the characters. It begins to feel like the author was trying to meet a word count and chose this instead of expanding and clarifying other scenes.
All things considered though, the story was interesting and I'll probably read the 3rd one when it comes out.
I enjoyed this book and the first one from the series, and can see the series being used as an intro for the youngest of the YA crowd, for them to begin to build a love toward Fantasy novels.
It’s a good, clean read, nothing too traumatic or violent to scare off the younger crowd. That’s not to say it can’t be enjoyed by all ages. Not all adults feel the need to have serious violence and/or hot and heavy romance scenes peppered throughout the storyline. This series recognizes this and sticks to the premise of the book.
The one pet peeve I do have and I took off an entire star from the rating, is the fact that the first and second both show a great amount of the book left to be finished, only to have it turn out to be the opening chapters of another book, as well as your typical PR move of “more by this author.”
I addressed this in my review of book 1, but didn’t take off from the rating. This one was much worse, showing darn near 20% left to go, only for it to be one sentence on the page, with TO BE CONTINUED… Not cool at all!
Like the first book, this was a quick read. Unfortunately, like the first book, long-winded dialogues/sermonizing continued as did grammar/spelling errors (at least one was noticeable enough that it halted my reading progress as I tried to figure out what the author meant). The plot seemed a little over-the-top at times and chaotic to follow so would most likely be better enjoyed if one stops trying to make sense of it and just read. Am honestly not sure if I would continue this series should another one be written.
While the pacing was much better than the first book, it really beats you upside the head with the near constant (not even exaggerating) inspirational monologues. Like having way too much honey in your tea. Thankfully the bits of meta-plot being hinted at proved to be very interesting. There’s a few loose ends i’m looking forward to exploring more in the next book.
Wonderful read! Highly recommend this. Lots of smiles and LOL moments along with tears and heart stopping action. Someone like Disney really should make this series into movies. Being a knitter, (and a senior) I love that Mrs Perivale uses her stab-tastic knitting needles as weapons and to make armor. Murray adds a nice comedy break too. Can’t wait for the next book.
What an amazing book this is! My kids are obsessed with this series and my mother absolutely loves reading them to my kids. I think she may love these books more than them! Such grand adventures and who doesn’t love talking kitties and dragons? Highly recommend these books.
I adore this series! It's one of the most creative, fun and entertaining I have read in a long time. The characters are unique and well developed and the plot is well paced. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Waiting patiently for the next installment!
I loved the first book of this series so that I ordered this one asap! I can't wait to finish reading and see how it ends. It's as wonderful as the first. 100% recommend any of Dash Hoffman's books. :)
A fantasy world of dragons, Inklings, and unusual beings. A story of good an evil. Good does triumph over evil, but doesn’t go away completely. What awaits are intrepid adventureers? Stay tuned to find out.
More of the same. More characters that didn't amount to needing them. And doesn't really have an ending. I struggled to keep going...but I did finally make it! Won't be looking for anything else by this author.
Listened to the audio (mostly because it was freely available, because I swore I wouldn't listen to that narrator again after the first book...although she's easier to to ignore after awhile). The story was ok, not quite as good as the first, but a fun collection of characters.
way too much split up talking and wandering amongst tons of characters. action was short an uneventful. a little random humor from the pointless mr murray. cliff hanger then an abandoned series for 5 yrs... where's book 3?
I enjoy this cast. I liked the stories. I love the cats. A little too much pontificating. Looking forward to the next story to explain a few things....
I have fallen in love with the main character and her spectacular entourage. Mrs. Perivale definitely keeps me thinking. I do believe dash Hoffman is my becoming one of my favorite authors!
