Spells and Suspicions is the third book in the Charmed and Dangerous paranormal cozy mystery series. These are clean reads with no swearing, gore, or adult situations, so curl up and enjoy!
Spells and Suspicions is Book 3 in the Charmed & Dangerous cozy paranormal series. I really enjoy this series and this book was so fun!!!
There is a HUGE baking competition coming to the small town of Haven and Kat's cousin Emily enters the competition. When one of the contestants died after eating Emily's pumpkin pie Kat has to find the real killer or else Emily will be going to jail.
I really enjoyed this book. I love baking competitions and these contestants all had some secrets!
This can be read as a stand alone book but you will have more fun reading all the books in the series.
This is book three of the Charmed and Dangerous series and sees earth witch Kat being asked to help her cousin Emily, a kitchen witch, with her entry in a baking competition. Not just any baking competition, but the biggest baking competition within the witching world and it was going to be held in Haven! Emily is only one of four contestants, but is a skilled baker, having her own shop in town and loads of happy customers. When they arrive at the competition site, out in the middle of some farmer’s field, with a huge ward around it to dissuade humans from getting close, they find the rules have been changed at the last minute and the bakers are now on their own, with no helpers allowed. That brings great relief to Kat as she is not very good in the kitchen and now she and Albus, her cat familiar, can sit and watch the competition and cheer for Emily.
The competition starts well, with Emily getting her favourite item to bake, but it wouldn’t be a competition without a twist! The bakers are made to switch counters and end up having to work on their competitor’s best dish. Emily is at a disadvantage as her cookbook, her kitchen recipe grimoire, which includes all her notes on magic infused recipes and the spells she would use, went missing on the very day she needed it the most. When the bakers are finished the judging starts with Emily’s pumpkin pie that has to have a magical twist to it. Unfortunately, the message she spelled into to it has a slight error in it, which could be taken badly, but when the judge tastes her pie and dies right in front of everyone, well then she is a world of trouble! After the initial shock and Emily’s protests of innocence, A warlock appears, seemingly part of the PEA, the paranormal investigative agency, and he whisks Emily away, before warning everyone else to stick around for questioning.
Kat can’t leave it alone, especially when she can’t get in touch with Emily to find out what has happened to her, nor if she has been released. She gets a call early the next morning, to tell her to come for questioning, but she doesn’t like the warlocks questioning style and it doesn’t seem like a true PEA interrogation. It seems it will be up to her amateur investigating skills to solve yet another murder in the town, but this time she can’t involve the human cops, nor her sort of boyfriend Chance and his family. If the PEA are in town and investigating not just the recent murder, but their missing agent and stories of a rogue werewolf, then Chance and his whole family are in danger! She finds out where the other bakers are staying and uses her friends and knowledge of the town, to get herself invited in, to listen in to their conversations and even talk, or question the other suspects. It seems there was no love lost between the other bakers and each had their own secrets they wanted to keep hidden and which could cause them problems if revealed. One has more reason to want one of the others out of the way than anyone else, but curse magic, a form of lack magic was used in the killing and Kat needs to find out who did it and why, to get her cousin Emily vindicated.
Another interesting case, with talk of lovely baking, a scrumptious meal at the B&B and lots of intrigue with the PEA, or maybe not the PEA investigating the town as well as the murder, a killer to be found and Chance and his family kept safe from those who would kill all of their kind! Funny seeing Albus getting scared of something for once, instead of all his usual wisecracks. Kat needs to use some of her uncle’s gadgets to case out the murder scene in secret, leading to one of her midnight escapades in the danger zone as usual. A touch of unexpected romance, sort of, and a missing friend, all add to the storyline. A confession will bring the truth to part of what is happening and now a new mystery for Kat to solve. Looks like Haven has some unwanted visitors and I can’t wait to read the next book to find out what happens next. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Chef Emeril Lagasse once described baking as "Different from cooking. It's like some kinda voodoo." If anyone should know, it would be him. Baking, well, the be specific, a baking contest serves as the backdrop for the third installment of Morgan Vale's Charmed and Dangerous series. It turns that that baking is the linchpin for a mystery involving the voodoo that she does so well.
Kat, a self-described earth witch, finds herself drawn into mysterious doings around a baking competition when her cousin Emily asks her to join in the fun, What happens next is a series of magical mystery mishaps that has our witch and her cheeky familiar, Albus, scrambling to solve another mystery. Without giving too much away, I will say that as light capers go, this was a fun one to follow. Ms. Vale's bewitching gumshoe is equal parts plucky magus who doesn't take herself too seriously, and a smart cookie who inspires readers to keep the pages turning.
Unlike many supernatural mysteries, Spells and Superstitions is as light and sweet as a fresh cone of cotton candy. There's no gore, no strong language, and nothing you wouldn't want your family to see if they happen to peek over your shoulder. For those of you looking for a delectable treat of a mystery for your multi-age/generational reading circles this winter, this is a great candidate. Pick up a copy today and put a little magic on your life!

The famous Harvest Baking Championship is coming for the first time to the small town of Haven. Emily, Kat Sullivan's cousin begs Kat to be her championship baking helper. After all, this means so much to Emily and the world famous Chef Fabio is the head judge. How can Kat say no? When they go to sign in, Kat Magic abounds as the competitors get to work with the cards stating what they are to make were passed out. Emily is thrilled since the card she has to bake just happens to be her specialty, her special cupcakes. So she gets to work right away. BUT halfway through, the judges throw a glitch into the competition...all bakers have to move over to the station next to them. This puts Emily on the station of on of the most obnoxious bakers who seems to always win. When the bakers are finished and bring their creations up to the judges, Emily brings up the pie she had to complete from her competitor's station, head judge Fabio tries it and fall face down in the pie...DEAD! Now Emily becomes a suspect in his murder and it is up to Kat, Albus and friends to prove Emily's innocence. Was Fabio even the right target? With lots of twists and turns we are led to a surprise end! This is a fun series with likeable characters and this third book does not disappoint! I received and ARC of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
Earth witch Kat Sullivan’s cousin Emily enters the Harvest Baking Championship competition, ready to win this one with her pumpkin pie. But when the head judge Fabio tried her pie, he started acting strangely and fell face-first in the pie! As Kat begins to investigate, she is finding that each of the contestants has something to hide -- any of them could have done it!
When Kat, her black cat Albus, and her friends come together to clear Emily’s name, will they find the killer before someone else has to die? Was the wrong person killed to begin with? Who is the real target?
Great pacing and fun characters will take the reader along on yet another mystery with plenty of suspense and an adventure tracking down clues as the danger closes in! Grab your copy and don’t get left behind!
Once again our heroine is called into action to solve a mystery before a friend takes the fall.
This is book three of the series, but it is written as a standalone. Feel free to start here.
This is a cozy witch mystery. I love this genre as they usually provide a mix of mystery, humor and a touch of magic which just makes them the perfect stories to relax and enjoy. This one fits that to a tee with an excellent setting, great characters and an intriguing mystery all wrapped up in one. I love the cooking focus built into this storyline. The mystery is a good one which kept things interesting throughout. Overall, another fun story and I look forward to another book in the series.
Highly recommended.

This is book 3 of series and each book can be read as a stand alone, but honestly it reads better if you have read the other books in the series. I have to admit, even I was a bit lost, but only because I have read so many books like this, that they were all blending in together and I could not remember what had happened in the other books.
I did however enjoy this book, and look forward to reading the next one. Hopefully it will not be too far from now so I don't forget again.
Good story line, nice detailed descriptions and likeable characters.
Would I recommend this book? Yes

When a judge dies at the baking contest, Emily is suspected as it was her pie. The PEA is also there for another reason and seems to be acting differently. They are looking into the missing agent and now are involved in the death. Kat decides that she is going to look into the death. Kat will have to figure out if the judge was the target or was in someone else.
This book was a great read to take you away for awhile. You will be swept up wondering who was behind the crime, you will not know until the end. I recommend reading this book

I really dislike it when an author ends a book with a new story tangent and then turns it into a cliffhanger. It's very annoying.
Kat's cousin Emily is entered into a really big baking competition that is actually taking place in haven. But a judge keels over after tasting her pumpkin pie.
Kat takes action trying to solve the murder as she feels Emily's innocence is endangered. And things seem weird as the paranormal investigators are being very weird. Each contestant has something to hide, and any of them could have done it. It's up t Kat and her familiar cat, Albus, to solve this case.
Kat’s cousin Emily is entered in a significant baking contest and the location selected is their hometown! Kat reluctantly agrees to be Kat’s partner; however, when the day arrives partners aren’t allowed. The bakers received their assignments and their baking locations. Then everything changes and they’re suddenly moved to different stations. Emily’s first attempt poisons a judge. And Kat is forced to investigate to free her cousin.
I enjoy this series and the wonderful, witchy characters. Definitely a great series to read.

Baking completion turns deadly.
Kat ’s cousin Emily enters a baking completion that soon turns deadly. A contestant dies from Emily’s pumpkin pie and it will be up to Kat to find the real killer. But things are not as simple as each contestant has their own secrets which will come unravel.
Will Kat find the killer before they strike again? A charming addition.
This is a charming book in a delightful series. I recommend reading the previous 2 books in the series for background information. I loved everything about this book. The characters are developing nicely and they are interesting. The story moves along at a quick pace which I also find enjoyable. I will tell you that my favorite character is Albus and if you read the series you'll understand why.

Kat and her friends are trying to find out how and why a baking judge at a bake-off in town, died suddenly after tasting her cousins pie. Fun banter and sticky situations, contestants who all have something to hid, and more suspects than needed. Great storyline with unexpected twists along the way. Well done.

A baking competition gone wrong and The wrong person accused. Typical for a cozy, but is the PEA all that they seem? This was soooooo good! It’s amazing what can be discovered with a little work and kindness when talking to a suspect. Now that the murder is solved, which was bitter sweet, the mystery for the next book needs to be solved!. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed reading this book, it has a good storyline. This story is entertaining, and filled with action, adventure and intrigue. The chemistry and interaction between the characters is wonderful. I can't wait for more from this author. I received this book as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
Kat’s cousin Emily is one of four contestants in a witchy baking competition. When one of the judges dies, Emily is the prime suspect. Kat (with the help of her kitty familiar Albus) can’t resist snooping around and trying to find the killer. I love this series. The book was interesting and fun to read. If you haven't read the previous two books, you'll want to read them first. While this book reminds you of the events in those books it might ruin the twists if read first.
Each mystery does a great job of building the elements to the case PLUS utilizing a different aspect of the magical world to give us more insight into the world without it feeling like info dumping. This installment is no different, Kat gives us more insight and learns a few new things as well.
Loved the dialogue, Albus & Kat's grandmother are still my favorites.
We get a little more info on the bigger story arc, and more developing between Chance's family and Kat. Looking forward to seeing where their storyline goes. Love the slow burn of it. Feels relatable, and fun.
You'll love this book if you love witchy cozy mysteries, with sassy familiars.
Kat and her cousin Emily are up to their ears in another murder. I love this series! I'll be honest, the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the ending. It seemed rather abrupt and there is a huge cliffhanger. I really, really hope the next book is available. I HAVE to know what happens next to our little magical crew!
Kat is back and caught up in a murder investigation once again. The government agency for paranormal is also in town and throwing everything out of kilter. It was a fun, delightful cozy mystery but I do hope for some romance soon.
Kat and Albus are a fun duo! The mystery is rather light, although the magic use is imaginative, and the takedown of the guilty is a bit improbable. I really missed Chance and the other Wilders; that awful PEA wizard probably has a lot to answer for in the next story...
Cute mystery about a baking competition. I have not read the previous books in the series, but that did not seem to detract from this story. Fun characters.
I enjoyed this book, but I'd love more character developments. However, the ending left a cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what happens next! BTW - love Albus!!
Kat's cousin, makes the most amazing doughnuts, but although her pies are delicious, infusing them with message magic is not something she does often, so when she was had to swap stations mid flow during the harvest baking competition, it made her all the more nervous. And when her message said Die instead of Pie and then a judge does just that, it was curtains for Emily. But Kat knew that Emily was innocent, but how does one tell the PEA that?
Another fun visit with Kat and her friends, always enjoyable and interesting. Full of possible suspects, some of whom were acting well strangely as well! Good read, ready for more!
