Investigating mass phenomena in a high school? Again? We just had that in the last volume! In fact, most of this feels really repeated from the previous installment (even the fortune-telling bit is the same), with the only noteworthy difference being the character of Yasuhara.

Yasuhara is interesting but somewhat inexplicable. There is an author note that he was a character from the novel (I hadn't realized this was a novel as well), so perhaps he makes more sense if you've read that.

For some reason instead of completing this story, the last section of book 4 is a different story about a church with some orphans who have been possessed. This story was actually better, though, so I won't complain.

Interested in finding out what Lin's issue with Mai is, given how little interaction they've had.

This volume was entertaining, it was light and fun. I think that Monk is my favourite character. I love the new character that was introduced in this volume, he's great and I hope to see him in future volumes. I can't believe that Lin had to deal with all of the father business but it was hilarious. I can't wait to read the next volume.

"5 men in a 6-mat room...Holy cow. This is like a field trip for school athletes."

Mai is a girl who loves to talk about ghost stories with her friends. When she comes across a house with a camera in it, she is curious. She knows that it is haunted and decides to go inside. By accident, she breaks the camera and injures a man who turns out to be the assistant of a ghost hunter. This ghost hunter, nicknamed as Naru, forces Mai to work for him in order to her to repay for the loss of his camera and for his injured assistant. Mai goes through so many spooky ghost adventures and learns more about herself.

"A perfect harmony of the smell of something that's gone bad and a drainage ditch that's starting todry out."

I am loving Yasuhara's character, he is not only hilarious, but he's charming as well. Naru is his usual self, he's super smart and arrogant. Mai is great, she works hard, is hilarious and cares about her friends. Monk is a brotherly figure and in this volume, it showed how good he was with kids. This kinda influences me to think he is a fatherly figure. I don't know, but I think he's cool and he looks young, I don't know why he keeps calling himself old. John is great, he is a kind, pure soul. Masako is great and I love how she bickers with Miko. Lin is a protective guy who isn't patient, but without him in the manga, it won't be entertaining.

"But I also like Shibuya-san. He's beautiful. But, I like you even more."

I can't wait to read more and I'll be off. These mangas are taking longer to read than I thought!

Yasuhara is amazing! Oh man... I love it! This part was greatness:

One of my favorite storylines was in this volume - the saddest one about the little boy Kenji who got "lost" while playing hide and seek. I liked the anime version of the story better than the manga - it was slightly tweaked in the anime. But still, I like the storyline and this part was super hilarious:

4.5*

I was really getting into the case and then the volume just up and ended. But I love Yasuhara, he's not only a lovable character, he's a fantastic addition to the group dynamic. Especially with his flirting prank on Monk, lol. I wasn't too keen on him in the anime, but I think I'm going to love him as a recurring character this time around.
I do love the continual explanation of parapsychology and how, despite the heavy-handed exposition, it actually blends in seamlessly with the narrative.
Mai's abilities are expanding and becoming more useful and turns out, Ayako's exorcisms do work. At least, they did this time even if the spirit just moved elsewhere in the building.

The side story broke my heart and made me cry real tears. It's one of the stories that's stuck with me since the first time I watched it in the anime, some 10-12 years ago and it still holds up today. It's so unbelievably tragic. The longer I looked at that one frame, the harder I found myself crying.
But it showed Monk's character in even greater depths. His fatherly side in general but specifically towards Mai. Seeing as Mai's an orphan and this is the first time we get a hint towards it, this was the perfect story to showcase Monk's worry for her safety and well being.
I also find it very amusing that he grumbles anytime someone calls him old, but decides he is in fact old when it suits him, lol. Also, I think this case hit a cord for Naru and it also put Lin in the limelight for once.

I found this randomly online. I love this anime, and when I realized there was a manga for it, I was excited. I'm sad that I can't find the manga in print. I can't find the first 3 volumes anywhere.

But even so, I'm surprised at how well the anime coincides with the mango. I love this story. I think John Brown is my favorite character, IDK why. The story of a group of ghost hunters will always fascinate me. I want to try to read the who series, but at this rate, I may not be able to. It was hard finding this much.

The Christmas story was really sad. I am curious to see how this "haunted school" story plays out. It seems different from the last few schools they focused on, but I hope we get a new location soon. I know this manga was aimed at teens, but even teens go places other than school.

While the main story itself was interesting (albeit a bit repetitive given that we had a similar investigation in the previous volume), the omake in this volume is the real gem.

I love how Ghost Hunt gets creepier and scarier as the series progresses.

The back of the book talks about one of the stories where 'a stinky smell sickens an entire classroom.' This reminds me of something that really happened in a local high school around fifteen years ago. There was a stinky smell that kept happening in a series of classrooms on the third floor of the school on one wing of the school only. The smell was overpowering, so much so that, even after opening the windows, students and teachers had to evacuate that section until the smell cleared.

By the time investigators would get there, though, the smell would be gone. The people from the board of education claimed everyone was imaging things, but people gradually got sick from the odor. This went on so long and so intensely that a plan was drawn up by the school administration to completely shut down one side of the school, changing the days schedule and putting all the students into one half of the school. This came within one day of being put into effect when the cause of the horrible smells was finally found.

The school is old, and there were some rotten pipes in the walls of the home economics room. Whenever they would their sinks, the stuff built up and the smells came out.

So strange smells really do happen.

The story opens with stories of a school having trouble, including a dog thats a ghost but that bites students. While they are at the school they find a student that has just been attacked by the dog and they see the ghost dog. The ghost dog is not the only ghost that's been seen, either. There was also a student that had committed suicide at the school a year previously. There were also fires in the dressing room every twelve days, and a strange smell in a classroom that made half the students ill.

Another good book in the series.

Ghost Hunt: Volume 4 is a decent book, but suffers from a few major problems. I knew there were some problems over a year ago when I originally started to read this book, got about halfway through it and put it down in frustration. Since then, I have read quite a few manga books and I think I have figured out the issues.

The adaptation into "proper" English by David Walsh is horrible. Maybe his hands are tied and he is not allowed interpret what the characters should be saying, but when I was reading it, I struggled greatly with the flow of the English. It is extremely awkward with characters saying things in a way that Americans would never say, and thereby becomes difficult to comprehend.

The main story by Fuyumi Ono is not very interesting. There is an awful lot of talk and not much else going on. the artwork by Shiho Inada is good though. Since this is ghost hunt, lets have a scary ghost or two, and I mean really scary. That really hasn't happened yet in this series.

The only thing that saves Ghost Hunt: Volume 4 is the side story. I was very entertained by it and actually thought that this one was quite good, even with the bas adaptation.

So, a lack of a good storyline for the main story and the horrendous adaptation to English really hurts this book and this series. Ghost Hunt has potential, but unless something is done, it will really kill the series.

Overall, I really wanted to love this book, but I can only say that it wasn't bad. I sure hope some of these problems are fixed in Ghost Hunt: Volume 5. Please let them find a really scary ghost. That will help some . . .

I rated this book a 6½ out of 10.

Loved the Christmas side story - possibly the best case yet! Bit bummed that the main story is to be continued though.
