The ghost hunters’ new case has turned deadly. Naru, the leader of Shibuya Psychic Research, is under a dark spell. When Naru awakens, he foolishly decides to take on an evil spirit alone. Now he faces a life or death struggle!

I've seen complaints that the series got less interesting after the mangaka moved from serialization to just publishing in the graphic novels, and I can see where they're coming from--the cliffhangers for each chapter get pretty annoying, and the flow sometimes seems to lag. (Plus, they're not aging well--one can only care about Mai's flaily high school crush for so long.) But on the other hand, the move from serialization to tankobon also coincided with Inada and Ono upping the scare factor in the stories, so I've yet to really object.
Plus, if the series had stopped at the end of the serialization, we wouldn't have gotten Yasuhara. And that would've been a crying shame.
Nothing to write home about, it was part two of the story that started in the eighth volume. Spirits were exorcised or put to rest as they deserved, affairs of the heart were not addressed, dream journeys made, it's the same plot the series has been sticking too for the last handful of volumes.
The volume was great, and we're finally done with the anime adapted portion of the manga. I like how Mai and Masako's relationship is a little different in the manga; they both not only acknowledge each other but have become actual friends. Even their interaction after Naru wakes up is different.
Naru continues to be Naru but we keep getting to know more and more about him. Like the fact that he's powerful enough to exorcise a rogue god?? Like, damn, son. Leave some glory for others, will you? But despite Lin being spot on about his ego (which reminds the reader that, at the end of the day, Naru is a seventeen year old kid) I appreciate him apologizing to Monk and John.
Speaking of Monk, can he BE more awesome? Taking over the case, leading with grace, taking on the responsibility, being nonchalant about his wounds but still stepping up to perform the exorcism?? Yes. And his duo with Yasuhara is iconic as ever. I mean, he needed help, he called Yasu, and he just?? Flew in?? I love them?? Yasu is rad as heck and I would love if he became a part-timer at SPR, too!!
Ayako finally showed how competent she is, and I love her for that! I'd forgotten how her story resolved but I'm so glad she came through and exorcised all those spirits like an absolute boss!! You go, Glenn Coco!
Also, Lin has mellowed down and blended in with the crew seamlessly. His amusement at Yasuhara in this volume was everything. And him suppressing a laugh?? My word, how far we've come.
Also, while the previous case was the most frightening to me in the anime, it was not scary at all in the manga. Probably because the manga lends itself to spirits better than monsters, proven by the fact that I enjoyed this case more.
This case was far more difficult compared with the earlier ones they took on. At this point, dealing with a curse was nothing new for the team. Yet this time, they have to face/undo a curse cast by a god.
[My awareness of Naru's true capabilities as a "ghost hunter" didn't really impact my excitement over the slow reveal of his ~powers~ lmao. Also feeling a bit sad because there are only three volumes left!]
The previous case (in the bloodstained mystery mansion) is my favorite just for the setting, but this whole case is a very close second. The climax of this volume is easily the best in the series.
Highlight of this volume: Seeing Mai and Masako finally become close enough to share clothes! Masako asking for a change out of her kimono before they try to fight a literal god is just awesome. And that battle by the sea! I have chills. Love it!
I adore that we're finally learning Naru's secrets (even by accident). 5/5
Well I read this volume out of order... as in I read it last. When I started reading the series, I needed volumes 8-11 from the library because they are really expensive to buy right now... the library had one copy of volume 9 listed but then when I went to check it out, suddenly they had no copies. So it was on my request list and decided to just leave it there... well they suddenly just got a copy so now I got the chance to read it. I've seen the anime episode a couple of times so I didn't miss out on the story.
I don't have much new to report... Mai is still annoying. Yasuhara is still AMAZING! And that is all I have to say. :-p
A girl is possessed by something but the group gets rid of it. Then someone turns up dead, their body washed into the cave. Mai has another dream/vision about the cave and spirits in it. They gather more information and determine that it's not the family that is being target by the evil spirits; it's the location itself.
Apparently the spirits they are running into are being used by someone else. Ayako finally demonstrates her ability in getting rid of spirits. They take on the main spirit of the shrine. More is revealed about Shibuya's personal history and abilities, and some of the members are wounded.
This volume completes the "Cursed House" story arc. Very solid! Probably the scariest so far (I mean, I wasn't actually scared -- it seems like it would be pretty hard to make something really frightening in this format -- but the creepy elements were there) and with interesting folkloric stuff that I wasn't familiar with. Definitely more original than the haunted schools they keep getting called to. (Are haunted schools, like, the Japanese equivalent of the English murder-at-a-house-party stock theme, or what?) And it was interesting to see a story with Naru almost completely absent.
