Now a complete 5-book series! The Healer's Secret, The Healer's Curse, The Healer's Awakening, The Healer's Betrayal, The Healer's Legacy.
The year is 1348 and the plague is set to sweep through England, leaving tragedy in its wake.
Unaware of what awaits her, Agnes is in love and betrothed to Ted. But her life is about to be torn apart and nothing will ever be the same again.
Jennifer’s life has changed for the better since she arrived in Italy. She’s put her past behind her and can finally look forward to a brighter future with boyfriend Francesco and her Italian relatives. If it wasn’t for the disturbing visions she keeps having of a pregnant young girl.
Who is she? And what is her connection to Jennifer?
Jennifer knows she must once again travel into the past to find the answers to her questions, but this time she’s afraid she may not come back…
Whilst I only rated the first book of the trilogy at four stars, this one just blew me away! I raced through Pryke’s story because I enjoyed it so much. It had all elements of a novel that I really enjoyed, leaving me desperate to see how this story concludes.
The story continues pretty much immediately where we left off, with Jennifer in Italy and living with Agnese. Some time has passed to show that Jennifer has become more established as a local healer however, it appears that she is having visions that she cannot fathom. Using the special healer’s box that Jennifer discovered in book one, readers are transported back to England in the 1300s.
This is where the majority of the story takes place. Being so far in the past does not make this book any less enjoyable and Pryke’s descriptions really brings the past alive. Seeing Agnes and her experience of the Plague was quite uncanny, considering that this is a re-release book and the world is suffering from a pandemic that is becoming equally devastating. Consequently, I really enjoyed watching as Agnes develops to become a healer. Whilst in England it is doing anything she can to help others from the suffering; it is on her travels to Italy that she really starts to learn her craft. This is where we see how Jennifer’s heritage has come to the present with the traditions and superstitions.
I did not feel that the dragonfly was emphasised enough in book one. However, this time the symbolism is incredibly important. I loved the background story to the dragonfly and how significant they were to mankind. It really establishes the story and makes a connection with the threat that Jennifer feels in present day, as well as Agnes’s fears in the past. It was a wonderfully binding mechanism that made the first book all the more enjoyable on reflection.
I am so excited to see how this story concludes! I love the setting and the fact that I now know more about Jennifer’s heritage of healers means the present-day story is more prevalent. The plot is wonderfully written and I was so interested throughout the novel. It is definitely not heavy-going and I loved the magic that flows through the pages. This is a great read and with the historical element, romance and magic, had all the ingredients for a charming story.
With thanks to Bloodhound books for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, this book was just so good, I read it so quickly and loved it. It was very well written and I enjoyed it even more than the first one in this series. Needless to say there is a third one and I will definitely be reading that one. This one had dual time-line which gave the reader an insight as to who the character was and how their life unfolds.
Following on from The Healer's Secret, the story sets off to explain the history behind the Innocenti family and their tradition of being healers in the Italian village and envirions, although this is set mostly in 14th century England at the height of a plague that swept across Europe. We head off on a journey with Agnes, who is the first healer of the family, and her humble beginnings to her life in Italy and how this has impacted on Jennifer in the 21st century. I love historical stories and you are able to tell that there has been a lot of research put into the books but especially this one. It is part of a trilogy and does really need to be read as such. Helen takes the reader on a wonderful journey with lots of descriptive writing setting the scenes vividly. Plus the ending had me tears...albeit happy ones!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and highly recommend it especially if you like a bit of history and mysticism (and dragonflies!) Thanks to the author for the ARC to give an honest review .
This is not my first book by this author but it is one of my favorites by her yet. This author has continued to impress me with her writing skills and her attention to details. This is a great book that I enjoyed from beginning to end. It is a well developed story that has twists and turns that left me turning pages fast. I had no problems connecting with the characters as they brought the story to life. They really made the story easy to read and kept it engaging. I highly recommend this book and this author.
Every single book by Helen Pryke leaves me more and more impressed with her storyteller gift! With the Healer’s Curse, the second book of the Healer Series, Helen takes us again to picturesque Tuscany and to Medieval England to trace back the history of the healers of the Innocenti family and to find out, along with Jennifer, the protagonist, some long-buried family secrets that needed to be brought into the light. A very emotional and eyes-opening journey, showing how our past, present, and future interpermeate and how pulling certain threads can lead to unexpected conclusions and wider knowledge and perspective. I was enthralled with a magical world painted by Helen, where generations of healers learn their healer’s ways to do good, to symbiotically co-exist with nature and draw strength from it’s wisdom and from the wisdom passed on by their ancestors, helping to face the evil that lurks and strives to take over. We miss such clear distinction in today’s world, where the boundaries between good and evil are often blurred, leaving people with the sense of insecurity and many unanswered questions. There are even more analogies to our modern times – the pestilence the Medieval healer, Agnes, has to face, with the pest spreading from town to town and from land to land, leaving families grieving over their beloved – sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Agnes’s words: “I have seen much death. I have spoken to people like you, who believed that the sickness would not touch them, and watched them die before my very eyes.” well describe our today’s pandemic reality as well, where so many people, despite so heavy toll the pandemic has taken so far, still happen to question the existence of a deadly virus. Everyone carries some gift in them – the idea is to discover it and use to serve a good purpose, as every gift can be used for good but it might also be used for evil. Remembering this simple truth is like using Agnes’s book of wisdom. I do strongly recommend you to read this beautiful and emotional story and enter the world of healers, mystery and magic, ancient legends, dragonflies and forces of nature aiding good people who can listen and follow their voice. I, myself, am anxious to read the third Healer Series book from this brilliant author!
This is a beautifully written, magical story. This sequel to The Healers Secret tells us the story of Agnes in the 14th Century and the link with Jennifer in modern day. It tells us of Agnes’ journey from ladies maid to healer in Italy and describes what a brave and brilliant woman she was, to have gone through so much in such a short time. I loved her relationships with Bob and Matilda and felt they both knew the real Agnes. The descriptions of the Grove back then and the involvement of the dragonflies again was just wonderful. The story then takes us back to modern times with Jennifer’s link with Agnes and how the curse set had impacted the Innocenti family for so long. Helen’s writing draws you into the characters lives and you feel every emotion they go through. Just brilliant. I loved it.
This is the sequel to The Healer's Secret and it continues with Jennifer in Italy becoming the village healer. She wants to know more about Agnes, the original healer of the 1300s, and she has visions when she touches a tapestry found in a carved box inherited from her uncle. I loved that the second half of the novel shared Agnes' story in the 1300s at the time of the Black Death when anyone who could cure people was deemed a witch. I found the whole story incredibly interesting and so well written and I learnt more about that time and how Agnes came to Italy. Helen Pryke is a fantastic author who writes so well about her subject which is well researched. You often feel that you are in the book and experiencing what Jennifer or Agnes are going through. I'm looking forward to the third installment!
Beautiful, Magical, and a book that will stay with me for a long time.
This is the sequel to A Healers Secret, which if you haven’t read that first I highly recommend that you do.
In The Healers Curse, we are whisked back through time to the 1300’s, when plague was rife, healing was thought of as witchcraft, and the work of the devil.
Through Jennifer, now quite the accomplished healer herself, we learn about the life of her ancestor Agnes.
How Agnes went from a young fifteen year old scullery maid, to a ladies maid. How she fought to save the lives of those around her and those she loved. The friendships she forged along the way. And how she came to be in Italy.
Then, when she thought her life would be easy and settled, married to the man she loved, creating a family with him, still it seems everything could be threatened by his jealous brother the Count, who lays down a curse that threatens not only Agnes's family, but generation after generation of her descendants.
Can Jennifer to anything to break the family's curse?
I love how it’s a story through time, through family relationships across the centuries
The author manages to capture the mystery and magic through her words. Drawing you into her book like one of the magic spells.
This had me smiling, holding my breath in places, and shedding a tear.
Totally brilliant, so much so that I read it in less than a day.
I cannot wait for the next installment in The Healers Awakening.
2nd in series from Helen Pryke listened on audiable and getting reading to listen to 3rd. This is a first for me to follow a series one after another...
I enjoyed the first book alot however this 2nd one just blew me away it had everything for me. It picks up where The Healers Secret leaves off and then delves into the past at a much deeper level, which, for me, was amazing.
Full of healing, plants, tinctures, dragonflies, soul feeling, intuition, plague, disaster, courage, travel through England then to Italy, evil on various levels, family, romance, heartache, love, family, protection, witches believed to be of evil, oh my so many descriptions this has it all.
I litrally felt I was living this story this has to be one of my fave ever read..!!! I absolutely embraced every bit of this as if I was there in each moment with Agnes her story gripped me in so many ways I feel like I understand her at a soul level absolutely amazing writing. This resonated so deeply that I don't feel this will leave me for a while my heart broke for Agnes at times of her sadness during some of her loss!
It makes me want to be doing more in my own life back to living in some of the simple ways of using natural remedies as everyday ways for the wider community. It just really deeply resonates in so many ways absolutely beautiful even with the sadness, disaster, and evil that was so prevalent the light shines through.
Well narrated, pitch perfect each character well portrayed and executed so you simply find yourself just in this world of the novel and nowhere else!
The second in the series. The healers Curse follows directly on from The Healers secret, it covers some back story to the first book but not an awful lot, I think this is a definite read in order series for the full effect, it’d be nice as a standalone but the first book really sets this one up.
This title felt a lot more magical for me personally, it also spends a lot more time in the past and I’m comfortable there so it made for a much more enjoyable read. I appreciated the obvious research that Helen Pryke had put in to the timeframe.
I really enjoyed the way the book unearths more characters, more family and more of the way of learning to become a healer. Quite special. There’s a very wholesome feel to these books.
In regards to the narration, I also enjoyed it far better this time around although there were still to my mind a few discrepancy’s, I felt unsure if they were from the writing or the narration, still lovely, but it just made it miss the full 5 stars for me.
Innocenti healer Jennifer has settled into her new life in Italy, but she is troubled by nightmares that hint at a dark family history. Determined to discover more, Jennifer drinks some of her aunt’s powerful cordial and embarks on a journey into the past, where we meet Agnes, the original healer. Agnes’ story is both heartbreaking and uplifting, and her experience with the plague has startling parallels to current-day events. I absolutely loved this story by Helen Pryke. A brilliant love story, artful blending of medieval past and the present day, and a touch of magic make for an unputdownable read.
Another fantastic offering from Helen Pryke and her healers series I so hope there are many more to come. A really great storyline that’s so well written I truly felt I was there myself. One of those books that you devour but at the same time you don’t want it to end. I won’t write too much about the storyline as this is why the blurb is for, but I will say a group of characters that you genuinely connect with and feel for. A beautifully written story that spans many generations of healers and all the good that comes with such an honourable title.
Wow what can I say, I have just finished The Healer’s Cure which is such a beautifully written story which will definitely stay with me for a long time. I was totally drawn in from the beginning and found it very difficult to put down.
I loved how Helen tells the story through time and through family relationships across the centuries.
She has a way of drawing you into the characters lives and you feel every emotion they go through.
I cannot wait for the next instalment and would highly recommend this book.
Thank you, Bloodhound Books, and Helen Pryke for an ARC of this book.
I’m completely invested in the characters after reading the second of this series. I love the touch of mysticism and the magic of the dragonflies infused in the story.
I was swept back in time, feeling fully immersed in 1348, getting to know Agnes and Ted, and the sorrow of the horrible, tragic plague as it swept through England.
I really enjoy Pryke’s storytelling style with her attention to detail. With the 1st and 2nd of this series I have felt warmly folded within the story, observing and learning as an invisible bystander. So lovely! Adding the 3rd in the series to my Kindle library now.
This is the second book in the healers series the first was very good and couldn’t wait to read the second and this follows on from the first on but this book is amazing ,as the characters are already known from the first one ,the story just draws you into it from the first page feeling like your there with them ,the ending was just how it needed to end all good ,now the wait begins for the next one in the series
I enjoyed this even more than the first in the series. I don't normally enjoy historical fiction but the writing about the plague was brilliant, you really grew attached to the characters and felt the loses! Then tying it all back to the modern day worked so well. Helen is a brilliant author to make a story combining magic, mystery, past and present that connects so well and be so believable too. Love it!
It is beautifully written and I really enjoyed travelling back to the 14th century and sharing in the pain and joy that Agnes felt. I really got a sense of Jennifer’s family history and I’m even more fond of the Innocenti family now... well, most of them, anyway!
What a fascinating family saga of tradition, love, evil, loyalty and endurance. Alternating between present day Italy and medieval Europe in the time of plague, we follow a family line with a birthright of healing and protection of loved ones. You will be treated to a delightful exploration of curative plants, dragonflies and triumph over a centuries long curse.
Another outstanding read with a little bit more magic thrown in. Not something that I’m normally interested in but Helen has a knack of making her storyline so interesting and believable. I just love the dragonflies... Right, I’m on to the next in series 😊 Thank you, Helen.
This can be read as a stand alone story but don’t deprive yourself. Ms Pryke delivers another wonderful story. Drawing you into the lives of the Innocenti family, focusing on Jennifer, an expat from Britain. She has returned to her roots and we are privy to her awakening and acceptance of her natural gifts. The ending is wonderful and magical as well and won’t leave you “hanging”, requiring you to immediately read the next in this saga.
Couldnt stop reading totally fell in love with the characters If you want to esccape into a world of magic then i recommend reading this series Brilliant
Having loved the healers secret which is the first book in the series I was Really looking forward to this one and it most certainly didn’t disappoint it was an amazing read both from the continuation of the storyline and the history surrounding it. I could almost Smell the garden and places being described from Within the pictures as the author has a clever way of transporting the reader to that time from beneath the pages. Am looking forward to reading The next book in this series
I enjoyed this second book in the Healer's series just as much as I enjoyed the book before this one. I can't wait to read the book that is before this one. The medieval timeline in the book was probably my favorite part and the reason I am so looking forward to Book 3. The Author has promised to delve more into the backstory of this Italian family in the next book!
Second book in healers series which starts with the first healer during the plague. So much worse than covid 19 . Superstition was rampant in the 1300's. Can't wait to read next book. Enjoy
This second book of the series was spectacular! It tells the story of Agnes, the first healer in the 14th century, as the Black Death ravaged England. The descriptions of how quickly the Plague wiped out entire towns were terrifying. Agnes had a natural immunity, which led to accusations of being a witch, because, of course, it did, so she was forced to flee England. I loved this one, particularly the women who developed some true witchiness to protect themselves and those they love. Now I'm ready to read the third book!
I adored Jennifer's story in The Healer's Secret and being immersed in Tuscan family life, so I couldn't wait to continue her journey in The Healer's Curse.
Jennifer's life has improved no end since meeting her in the first book in the series, but with continuing visions of a young pregnant woman, we get to travel back to the past with her, to unlock long-hidden family secrets.
I'm fascinated by the medieval period, so was eagerly swept up in healer Agnes' story as she battled through loss and heartache in 1348 England. Helen Pryke skillfully drew me into the story and didn't shy away from the reality and horror of Agnes living through the plague - call me weird, but I loved that! Equally, her descriptions and the sense of place when Agnes reaches Tuscany, were just as vivid.
The Healer's Curse is an emotional and moving story. Bookended by Jennifer and her visions, I was transported to medieval times and enchanted by Agnes and her journey. With wonderful characters and settings, not to mention the mystical dragonflies that are weaved throughout, The Healer's Curse is a beautifully told and satisfying read.
