The students of Ryokuryou High School think they’ve been playing a fun new game called Orikiri. They have no idea that it’s actually a wicked spell conjuring up evil spirits that intend to kill their sensei! More troubling is that with each passing minute, the strongest spirit eerily devours the other apparitions and grows ever more destructive. Since the spirit can’t be stopped, there’s only one way to save the Turn the curse around onto the students who initiated it! Mai and Naru clash mightily on this case, as Shibuya Psychic Research must choose between the sensei and the students . . . and time’s running out!
Shiho INADA (いなだ 詩穂 in Japanese) was born in Kanagawa Prefecture on October 17. She is a Libran with blood type B. She made her debut with Camouflage in 1994. Her best known work is Ghost Hunt.
This volume was great, it was interesting and the conflict between the characters was interesting. I couldn't believe that I finished the volume, until I turned the page. It was entertaining and my heart stretched out towards the other characters because of how connected I felt towards them. I loved the way they worked together and when someone fell down, they were ready to catch them. Honestly the sweetest thing, I can't help but wish to be a part of their group.
Mai is a girl who loves to talk about ghosts with her friends. One day, she comes across a house that seems to be haunted. She saw a camera inside and decides to go inside, acting on her curiosity. When she does, she breaks the camera by accident, along with injuring the assistant of Naru, a ghost hunter. This ghost hunter forces Mai to work for him until she pays back for the camera and his injured assistant return. Mai goes through many adventures and makes many friends along the way.
I love when the main character moves on from being a normal girl going to school, to a girl going on adventures. It's so cool to see that Mai has transformed into a mature teenager who understands how to make decisions. It was frustrating to see her fight with Naru, but I couldn't help but be on her side. As the volumes go by, I gain more and more respect for Naru's character. He goes through so much but he is really strong. I love Monk-san, he is my favourite character in this series. He is always there to protect those he cares for and is super funny. He's only 25 years old but he thinks that he is an old man. John is quiet, helpful and kind. Miko is another character that protects the people she cares for. Lin only cares for Naru and wants the best for him. Yasuhara is hilarious and knows how to charm others with his jokes.
I can't wait to read more, I'll be off to read another volume! See you in a bit.
This volume certainly had its ups and downs, with the latter mostly due to Mai's infuriating ~stupidity~ lol. Though for me, her so-called dumbness is more like being reckless and impulsive, just like normal teenagers.
I know I said I don't wanna compare the manga with the anime but some things just hit different in the show. As for the volume, I loved the conclusion; it made sense for the magnitude of the problem. I also loved the moment when Mai and Masako both experienced the same horrific vision. I also really appreciated how it showed the difference in beliefs between Mai and Naru, harking back to the two belief systems of heart and empathy vs cold hard reason. But speaking of the difference, it did make me peeved with both of them. At Mai for not stopping to think for a second or have any faith at all in Naru, and for Naru to just double down on his harsh reasoning and not explaining to Mai what he was planning. Shit, you two, just talk! Good God!
I do think that Naru was more aloof in the anime as opposed to the blatant sarcasm he displays in the manga. But I'm not complaining, the disposition fits the character but that ONE scene has been living in my head rent-free for ages and it just hits right in the anime. Monk continues to be the best character and now even Ayako is acting protective towards Mai!! I can't!! Also, they're both 25 and 23?? Shit, dude, I thought they really were ancient. (Please don't come for me, Ayako!) Yasuhara continued to be a great addition to the group, not only as a ray of sunshine but as a character whose kindness you don't take as his weakness. He could be funny, sassy, kind, or helpful but that doesn't stop him from putting his foot down or speaking up when it matters. And 13 year old me may not have appreciated him, but 25 year old me would defend him to the ends of the earth. (That's my boy now!)
I do have one gripe with the manga: the dialogue bubbles aren't the most clear. They usually don't have the little tail pointing to the speaker and sometimes, it becomes unclear who said what.
But besides that, another great volume. Can't wait for more.
I loved the conclusion to the story in the previous volume. I couldn't put it down, and just loved seeing all the characters try to, and eventually, solve the mystery!
The Ghost Hunt series could be so cool, but it isn't. There is so much explaining and talking about Chinese and Japanese spirits that I found extremely hard to follow. I struggled to get through this story and just found myself wishing for a great ghost story. Heck, I would even settle for a good to mediocre story.
Ghost Hunt: Volume 5 doesn't have what it takes to even be a mediocre story. So far, this manga series has disappointed me the most of all manga series that I have read. It has the potential to be awesome, instead it just flounders on the ground like a dying fish gasping for water. It is not the translation and adaptation this time, which isn't very good either, but the lack a good storyline.
The book is just plain ol' boring. Sure, there is a ghost or two, but even then it doesn't ever seem to attack anybody. Plus, the whole Mai not trusting Naru to do the right thing really bothered me. If you cannot trust the leader of the group to do the right thing, why are you in that group?
Overall, Ghost Hunt: Volume 5 is quite a barely readable manga book that leaves the reader confused as to what is going on. Even now, a few days after I finished the book, I can barely remember what happened in the book. Less explanations about the history of spirits and more action is what this series needs. Lets hope the creators get it together for Ghost Hunt: Volume 6. It can't get much worse, can it?
Mai finds out Shibuya basically conned her into working for him at first. Some of the group spot the same spirit dog from earlier, but it seems to have grown and gotten even meaner. It also becomes evident that Mai has visions/dreams that can show what is going to happen in the future.
The more they find out the more complicated things to be. There's an ancient cemetery involved, a number of spirits, and the ouija-like game the students got involved in. Later Mai ends up in the school at night alone and sees things then loses consciousness.
There's another instance of Mai having a dream vision that gives her information about what is going on plus an indication of what could happen in the future. The entity causes a ceiling to collapse and almost crushes Mai.
They figure out that there is some kind of curse involved behind all of the events. It's a curse to murder someone. It's aimed at a teacher who's really nasty, especially about anything having to do with superstitions and belief in them
Mai wants to stop the curse from being reversed since it could kill a bunch of students.
