Re: the cliffhanger from the previous volume, the beginning was a tad weak. And I'm getting a bit tired of the dynamic where Naru is needlessly opaque and Mai is hasty and overwrought. At this point Monk-san is my favorite character.
But I'm still finding this series pretty fun! As a play on the traditional "haunted mansion" story this two-book arc was pretty classic. It hit all the cliched tropes (hidden rooms, bloody writing, morons who go walking alone when they know this is how to get disappeared) and had a decent twist.
Well, I guess this is my last review of 2016. I'm super disappointed, I couldn't finish my Goodreads goal. But there's always next year! I'm planning on buddy reading with my friend Nathalie, and we will be posting reviews for the books we read. I loved this volume, it was super interesting. I found the way the story was told was intriguing and enjoyable.
Mai is a girl who loves to tell ghost stories with her friends. One day, she walks into a house that is believed to be haunted. She accidentally breaks a camera and injures an assistant of a ghost hunter, nicknamed Naru. She is forced to be his assistant so that she can repay him for his camera, along with waiting until his assistant recovers. She meets many friends, who she soon acknowledges as her family.
I loved this volume just like the others. This is much more serious and bloody. There were parts in this book that were better when it was animated, because of the background noises and the animation. But I loved the different experience I had while reading this book. It was nice and detailed, and I learned a few new things.
I hope to read more in the year of 2017, in order to fulfill my guilt from this year. I'll be off and see you next year :)
Really enjoyable series so far, one of the truly scary manga I've read! Ironically, it's the art and the humor that make it so scary. Ghost Hunt is primarily a shojo manga, with art and style that reflect that enough to be disarming, along with humor and drama that focus your attention, so that when the ghosts and monsters appear, you're not quite prepared, and its really rather creepy. The artist really has a knack for setting the atmosphere and using just the right touches of realism and sound effect markers to be delightfully creepy. Along with the array of eclectic and engaging characters, I find myself trying to read slower and slower, because really just don't want this series to end!
"Those who came here are all dying. Listen to those Urado murdered. Get out!"
The conclusion to this arc was both horrendous and sad. Aided by his two lackeys, a rich mad man desperate to extend his life murdered so many innocent people in that house. He continued the murders even in death, killing so many that he reached the point where he stopped being a human and turned into a literal monster. The victims' families did not even get closure or even an inkling as to what happened to them in that horrible mansion, not even until the end.
So creepy! So scary! Perfect if you want to get just a little scared (or really scared - I guess it depends on how brave you are). I loved seeing Mai's gift grow and the interaction between all the characters really shows how a little rag tag group has become a family!
I think this is my favorite out of the lot. It doesn't take place at a school (nice change) and It's just so much creepier than any of the other volumes. I love this series.
Creo que no está siendo buena idea leerme estos tomos por la noche 🥲 me gustan muchísimo pero ahora... quien es capaz de dormir?! Spoiler: yo no 🥹 me pondré vídeos de gatitos
I'm just loving how the manga focuses on Naru's enigmatic past and present. All the hints are building the tension well and I know the pay-off will be worth it. My personal favorites were "Do you know what it feels like to die?" and Naru carrying Masako's comb, presumably to locate her.
I also really enjoyed Mai and Masako's relationship in this volume, while Monk and Yasuhara continue to be awesome.
The Bloodstained Labyrinth spans volumes six and seven and is (hands down) my absolute favorite case! The Winchester Mystery House is pretty well-known and there are a lot of other influences being pulled in, but I liked all of them.
Absolutely love watching everyone come together in this volume to rescue Masako. Naru's true powers are starting to get a few hints dropped too. Mai is lovely and her grudging friendship with Masako is awesome. I adore watching all these characters get closer and closer.
"We cannot hunt monsters..." This is my favorite case. 5/5
Ghost Hunt: Volume 7 is a just a little better than the last book, but not by much. It still has the main issue that this book is more talk and bite. Sure, we get to see a ghost, but this is more of a murder story than a ghost story. The ghost we see doesn't even know she is a ghost. How scary is that? Well, the answer to that is, "Not very." After seven books, I would think that I might have become a little scared from something in one of these books, but I haven't been.
As for this story, it is the second half of the story that started in Ghost Hunt: Volume 6. It is a decent story, it just has way too much dialog, and barely any action, to keep me interested very much. Yes, it was great when they found the missing room and when they were searching for Masako, but that was about it.
I think the main problem is the writing while the other problem is the Translation and Adaptation. A lot of the times I read something in this series and you think to myself, "Huh? What did all that mean?" So, I either read it again and don't get any clarification or I just forge ahead ignoring all the gibberish. I now opt for the latter.
As usual, the artwork is very good.
Overall, Ghost Hunt: Volume 7 is not bad, but it could be so much better. It looks like there are only two more books in this series. I am going to hope that they are a little better than the previous seven. So, I will give Ghost Hunt: Volume 8 a chance. I hope I get really scared. Please, scare the heck out me. i am begging.
It turns out Mai had been having a dream vision. Later a spirit possesses her for a short time, and then writing appears on the walls. It seems that someone was murdered in the mansion in the past. The group also realize that there may be a sealed room in the center of the house.
Lin performs a spirit summoning, and it becomes possible that Dracula is involved. Fortunately the story then tells the correct history of Vlad Tepes, the man who inspired the legend of Dracula. The group then breaks down one of the walls and finds a center room and some corpses. It's possible that some guy in the past had murdered people and used their blood, thinking it would keep him from dying, like Elizabeth Bathory.
The conclusion of the Bloodstained Labyrinth storyline... the best one! But, it's all better in the anime ;-)
What I love most about reading manga is seeing the characters change as they get older or taller or any other part of their appearance changes (like hair lengths and such) but I'm mostly referring to the manga artist and being able to see the growth in their work as they continue to draw the characters, they get better and better. I really noticed it in this volume just how much better the art looks now. John Brown looks great! Haha!
