Rafael is the best friend-with-benefits a guy could ask for, but I had to go and screw it all up by falling in love.
Everyone gets sick of me eventually. My birth parents, the endless conveyor belt of foster homes, even the band that became my family.
Why should Raf be any different?
When he wants to take our friendship to the next level by welcoming me into his world of collars and pet names that make me feel wanted and cherished, I know it can’t be permanent.
No matter what he says, there’s no way someone like him could actually want me forever. But I’m going to enjoy pretending for as long as it lasts.
Rafael
I spent so long pining after my best friend, I didn’t even realize the perfect guy was right under my nose.
Chaz is an adorkable goofball who’s kept a band full of hotheads from melting down on numerous occasions, and he and I are perfectly in sync in and out of the bedroom.
Turns out, he’s also a natural submissive who just might be the pup I’ve always wanted, if I can convince him this thing between us is meant to last forever, and not just be a one-hit wonder.
Collaring Chaz is a surprisingly sweet M/M rock star romance loaded with angst, band drama, contractual pup play, a cinnamon roll MC struggling with mental health and addiction, and a dominant rock god who saves him.
Joel Abernathy, also writing as L.C. Davis, is a trans author of MM romance. He enjoys writing dark and emotional romance about men loving men in all genres.
Chaz and Rafael who we already met at book #1 are band members of Dante's Infernal.
They are friends with benefits. Chaz will never show his real feelings to Raf, he knows Raf has feelings for Dante. Raf is happy for Dante and Cash and conflicted because of ‘losing’ Dante. Chaz feels like a third wheel and he thinks drinking and popping pills will help. Not! He gets derailed and even the best time with Raf as his master and he as puppy can’t help him. It even hurts more. Chaz has to get his shit together, he feels rejected and deeply hurt. When Raf finally admits his love to Chaz it too late.
A lot is going on in this story. I loved it all. It was, for me, even a better read than #1. More story, a whole lot sexier and more hurt. Raf and Chaz's dynamic felt good there was a lot of focus on their relationship. It was also about all the fuzz around the band, competition, creating music, concerts. Overall a delicious entertaining narrative, engaging characters, some nice BDSM play, it all kept me glued! Thank goodness for the hea! Drake gets his own story! I can’t wait!!
I liked it until Chaz joined the new band like a gullible kid and this is when I knew he won't grow a spine. I was thrilllled when he left Dante's band and stood up to him, but he had to fall into the clutches of a more toxic band and wait for Raphael to swoop and save him like a damsel in distress. Gah.

Ooooh, this was gooood! What it lacked in suspense, it picked up in steam and angst! In this continuation of Dante's Infernal we get so much: best friends turned lovers, second chance, sizzling heat, mental issues, the inside of showbiz and how cutthroat it can be.
It broke my heart to see Chaz as he saw himself. He needed to fall and burn hard before he could rise again - like phoenix from the ashes. You know the phrase - it may get worse before it gets better - it fits Chaz and Rafael's story to a tee. Both men have to get to the deep end before they see the light at the end of the tunnel. Made me all emotional. I have never read puppy play but always wondered what it was about it that made it so irresistible. Joel Abernathy wrote it beautifully and in a way that I could feel it: the worship, the devotion, the loyalty that Rafael inspired, the care and tenderness he gave as Master and his journey to seeing real Chaz and what they could have if only he sees what's in front of him.
I enjoyed the behind the scenes intrigue, the legalese and the pressure that rock stars were under. It was tense and at times on edge - you perform even if your heart is breaking, you perform even if there is nothing left to give. The author captured the struggle, the stress and the challenges of being in the spotlight splendidly. There were people who really surprised me in their viciousness but there were those who I never thought to be trustworthy and steadfast. I love when that happens. I loved this book as much as the first - emotional and leading to a better future for those who never felt good enough but were worth their weight in gold. Copy received for my honest review
Collaring Chaz is the second book in Joel Abernathy’s Dante’s Infernal series. While this story does feature a new couple in Chaz and Rafael, a lot of the backstory develops in the first book, so I think this one reads best as part of the series. We met both Chaz and Raf in Taming Dante and it was clear there that they were hooking up with one another, as well as that Rafael was harboring feelings for Dante. I think the early parts of the story work best here for me as we see the close bond of friendship, as well as the heat between Rafael and Chaz. It is clear that Chaz has a lot of self doubts and insecurities, and that Rafael is a little too casual with Chaz’s feelings (though he is truly unaware of them). But the bond and connection between the men is clear. There are also some nice scenes where the guys play at Rafael’s club and explore some puppy play scenes. The men are sexy together and it is fun to see them exploring a new side of their relationship. I also enjoyed the behind the scenes feeling of the story as we get to see the life of the band both recording and on tour. There is a nice “rock star” feeling to the books that comes through well.
I haven't read the first book in this series. I probably never will because I don't like Dante all that much.
I really like Chaz. He was a pushover, but he eventually does bite back. I still feel like Dante and Drake could have traveled more after saying some of the horrible things that they said about Chaz. I loved Raf even though I wanted to shake him a few times. The two of them together are pretty hot, though.
I'm really glad Chaz got the attention he deserves even if the spotlight doesn't exactly thrill him. He does come into his own, though when he makes a pretty big decision. I was proud of him. Dad and Drake get into some dirty methods to get Chaz back. Things work out when Raf is honest in a way that finally gets through to Chaz and they get their HEA.
I'm not a huge fan of Drake or Sterling, but I want to know more about their history and how they will overcome their hate to get a HEA.
I received an ARC by GRR in exchange for an honest review. 4 stars!
First, let me start by saying that Puppy Play is not my jam, I don't actively search for puppy play to read, and I think I've read 1 other book that had puppy play. That said... I loved this book!
What I loved... 1. The Characters: - Chaz... I wanted to wrap him up in bubble wrap and protect him from the whole world. He has so little self confidence, self esteem and being with Dante in a band. even with Cash controlling a big of his diva-ness. he sees himself as Dante's stand-in, when it comes to Raf. The F2L situation they had isn't enough anymore. #SecondString
- Raf: Even though he tried to stand up to Chaz, I still wanted to shake him! Raf is kinky, is searching for the perfect sub/pup and has been testing the water with Chaz on the down low for a while. he is still a sweetheart though, an attentive master and a patient dom. #LetMeTeachYouMyWays 2. The Plot... 2 subplot are working hand in hand here. the relationship development between Chaz and Raf, and Chaz finding his own way and building up his self esteem.. These two plots converge and diverge multiple times, until finally they go hand in hand for the men to get their HEA. #LongWayHome
3. The Romance... The transitions between F2L, FWB, and then lovers we paced well. we don't see the first part really, because it was in the past, so we catch up to them as FWB. nevertheless, the emotions were there and just waiting for each of them to see what was right in front of them. #HeartEyes
4. The Kink/Heat... This was light BDSM, light Puppy Play and super hot. the way he smoothed the way for Chaz to embrace his submissiveness, his patience while guiding him through Puppy Play, and even the vanilla moments, the " I'm done sharing you". sweet and sexy. #ThePerfectBlend
5. The HEA... I absolutely adored how this book ended. the possessiveness Raf shows toward Chaz is hot AF. also.... the teaser for the next book? HELL YES! DRAKE AND STERLING !!! #Forever
The MM romance has a beautiful “friends to lovers” undertone & I found the continuation of the storyline from “Taming Dante #1” into this one “Collaring Chaz #2” quite spellbinding & fascinating to read. The storyline flows smoothly throughout a well-written, interesting plot & covers the relationship between two band members (Chaz) & (Rafael). I found the characters to be realistically flawed to a certain degree & they go on an emotional journey filled with some heart-wrenching moments before find their own version of a HEA. There is: Band rivalry, drama, intrigue, suspense, heartache, anguish, some puppy play, medical scenes, mild domination/submission, undiagnosed mental illness, self-medication, misunderstandings, determination, confrontations, complications, declarations, compromises, contentment, love, steamy scenes, & a satisfying conclusion. I look forward to the next book in this series & would recommend this book.
This book was darker and angstier then the first in my opinion but that made it all the more intriguing read! Chaz was like a kicked puppy with all his struggles and his demons and his "unrequited" love for Raf. I had to push through hard in some parts because i was literally breaking inside for him knowing how he saw himself and the world around him was colored by something we didn't have a name for until the end. Raf was an ass and didn't see what was right in front of him for a long time and I honestly didn't feel like he had made up for some of those mistakes enough by the time he was forgiven but I did love the happy ending they got and the hint at the next book I bet thats gonna be crazy and I cannot wait to read Drakes story!!! Joel is quickly becoming one of my favorite new authors!
*I received and ARC if this book for an honest review*
This was one hell of a powerful, grab-you-by-the-feels, intense, fantastic, heartrending, emotionally charged, poignant, bittersweet, raw, gritty, gripping, five alarm flaming hot, angsty, tug-at-your-heartstrings, heartbreaking, made-me-shed-tears-of-both-sadness-and-joy, and totally awesome story. It seized me from the very first page, and I will admit to wanting to rattle the teeth of more than one character. I would DEFINITELY recommend getting this marvelous gem for yourself.
Collaring Chaz is the second book in the Dante's Infernal serie by Joel Abernathy. This book is about Chaz and Rafael. It's a friends to lovers rockstar romance with puppy play. I liked their story.
This book gives me LIFE. I LOVED this book. What’s weird is that the whole point of me reading the first book (Taming Dante) was to read this book, but I somehow got distracted and only got halfway through. And instead of being like a normal person and finish reading that book first, I dived straight into this one.
Do I recommend reading these books as standalones? Probably not. There is a lot of story that relies on you knowing the characters first even though each book is about a different couple. But anyways. I read this book all in one sitting and I absolutely did not plan on doing that. Chaz and Raf are just SO addicting to read and their story kept me entertained to the very end.
Trigger warnings for an undiagnosed mental disorder (character gets diagnosed later), self medicating, pill dependency, alcoholism, mentions of a drug addiction, not entire safe kink play?, puppy play, and medical kink.
There’s a lot happening in this book. It is ANGST. I love it, but it’s a lot if you’re not prepared for it. So this book is centered on a rock star band called Dante’s Infernal. Dante is the lead singer and song writer for the band, and he was the first book where he meets his one true love, Cash, their newest drummer in the band. But the band started out with Dante, Rafael, and Chaz when they were in high school. Raf plays the guitar and Chaz, the bass. Even though no one in the band is related, it is a bit incestuous. Chaz, Raf, and Dante have all hooked up before at some point in the past, and that means the opportunity for a LOT of unrequited love.
Raf has been in love with Dante for a very long time, not realizing that his bandmate and friends with benefits, Chaz, is deeply in love with HIM. So, it’s just a lot of heartbreak all around.
When Dante used to be the one who was high on drugs and causing scenes, one step away from his own grave, Chaz’s own problems seemed small in comparison. But I think that he just hid it a lot better than Dante. With Dante now sober but still as prickly, it’s becoming more and more obvious that Chaz has a lot of problems and an addiction that needs to be addressed.
Kink does not, and cannot, cure or save Chaz. What I liked about this book is whole there is a master/pup bent to it, it’s still very much focuses on the band life and their problems. Chaz is new to kink, while someone like Raf is a Dom and very much in the life and knows what he wants in a partner. I think a lot of this book glosses over the intro to kink aspect for Chaz and I know the relationship between Raf and Chaz is uniquely different since they’ve known each other for a long time, engaging in kink together is new. And for Raf to immediately put Chaz is pup gear seems a bit quicker than is realistic, even if Chaz trusts Raf unequivocally. They even engage in medical kink and some electric shocks pretty quickly and with no prior discussion to the whole thing, so...maybe suspend your belief on the kink pieces of this book?
There ARE sex scenes in this book, but I personally don’t think there’s an overbearing amount by any means. I think the story still very much focuses on the band and Chaz having to realize what he wants and learning to find his place within the band instead of letting anyone with a stronger personality than his dictate his life.
So, it’s funny. Drake? The manager of Dante’s Infernal and Dante’s actual father? I didn’t like him in the first book and didn’t like him at the start of this one either. BUT HE GREW ON ME. He comes off as an uncaring father and ruthless manager who cares more about the bottom line than about the people in the band. But I think somewhere along the way, he realized that being soft and trying to be everyone’s best friend in the business wouldn’t get anyone anywhere. And not when you have a son that’s one step from the grave and another who might drink and mix the wrong pills and also wind up dead. It’s tough love all the way.
And I’m only bringing up Drake so much because I really love how much he became more of a father figure in this book and we saw how Chaz’s opinion of Drake changed so significantly by the end. And I love that for them. Also? At the end, the author says Drake gets his own book with one also ruthless character who we see in this book, and I AM SO EXCITED. I yelled with glee with I saw that note at the end. I can’t wait!!! Because that other love interest comes off as even more slimy and unforgiving than Drake and I am very interested in how the author is going to make me like him since I currently hate his guts.
The rest of this review is kind of a spoiler!!
I...think it’s kind of cheesy to have two weddings in a book?? Especially since one wedding is for characters from another book and we don’t get to see it from their perspective. And the two weddings are almost the same. So. Yeah.
I feel like we should talk about the mental disorder rep in this book? I would too read it for that. It’s a bit of a throwaway near the end that just throws a label on how Chaz has been acting this entire time and I don’t know. It just seems badly done. We find out he has schizophrenia at the end, and I’m not sure if that’s to brush aside his drinking, his pill addiction, or to invalidate his feelings? Like? I’m not sure anyone really even apologized enough for how they treated him, ignored him, and talked about him behind his back and I think he’s valid for his feelings. For this story to say everything he’s been through and felt is because of a mental disorder just rubs me the wrong way.
Overall, this was a quick read and I really enjoyed reading about Chaz and Raf despite a couple things I listed above. The writing is addicting and while I’m not new to Joel Abernathy’s writing, this is probably my favorite book from them and I can’t wait for book three!
I enjoyed the first book in this series, Taming Dante, and although you don't have to read it before you read this one, there is quite a bit of crossover with characters since the story centers on members of a band.
There's kink, hot sex, and bandmate drama. To be honest, if this book had come first, I'd have had a hard time caring what happened to Dante because he was a total jerk to Chaz through most of it. Rafael isn't exactly a jerk, he's just clueless, but he does grow throughout the book, as does Chaz, making for a satisfying read.
I will start out saying this author is an auto-buy for me since I love his story telling. With that being said, I really liked the story with some caveats.
Both character's background story needed to be a bit more fleshed out so we could gain a better understanding of some of their choices. Especially the alcohol/drug addiction story line for Chaz and the kink/puppy play part for Raf. As a reader, I wanted a deeper connection to the MC's.
There were some inconsistencies with regards to Raf's involvement in the club vs only being with Chaz. Especially since they didn't discuss safe sex practices. To me, this is important to incorporate into story telling nowadays, especially with characters who have frequent hookups. To not discuss it at all leaves a hole in the story for me.
Chaz's switch to another band and manager, the ensuing rebranding and soft-porn photo shoots, and the ambiguous relationship to the new manager felt unfinished. It was never brought to light what the purpose was, if there was a personal/dating relationship with Sterling or the dynamics of the new band. It was hinted at, but it felt disconnected.
The same goes for Chaz leaving Dante's infernal, the breach of contract, Drake (his old manager), wanting him gone but then not, Raf's "deal" with Drake to bring Chaz back (this was never spelled out), it all felt unfinished.
So did the final aspect of Chaz being diagnosed with a mental illness (I won't spoil it for you). It just didn't fit. Didn't make sense.
And let's talk about the kink of puppy play. Raf wants a sub who wants to be a pup. Chaz wants to explore kink with Raf but they never have a discussion on the specifics, what a contract entails, what the responsibilities are, if puppy play is something Chaz is comfortable with, they just go right into the scene. This could have been so sexy to have them discuss it, really talk about it instead of Chaz going right into the headspace of being a puppy. It just wasn't believable.
With all that being said, it may sound like I didn't like the book. I actually did. And I would recommend it to anyone interested in this genre. The reason I am so picky is that I love this author and I really wanted to give this 5 stars but just couldn't.

I was elated to get a chance to review Joel Abernathy's Collaring Chaz. I am thrilled to once again get to spend time with the messed up men of Dante's Infernal. The second book in the series, I would highly suggest reading Taming Dante first.
Chaz and Rafe have one hell of a complicated and messy relationship. Best friends since they were young, Chaz is hopelessly in love with Raf, and they've been friends with benefits for a while. So complicated indeed. And in all the band drama, Chaz's meltdowns, managerial hell, and things just get messier.
This book will have your emotions running all over the place, smiling one moment, and wanting to scream the next. Chaz is way too easygoing, always trying to please everyone. It's frustrating and hard to read. Chaz is so damn easy to love but he's also a god damn mess. Hell, I wanted to protect him and love him myself. Luckily he had Raf to fufill that role in the end. But good god, it's much harder to love Raf. He's just aggressive and forceful, with needs that Chaz can't meet, yet in the end he's protective and loving.
If you enjoy Puppy play, this is a must read. The author not only adds in puppy play, but takes Chaz through the exploration and education of what puppy play is and how it can help him. It's wonderfully written and emotional as can be.
Of course, there's also some great banter and humor. There's one particular sex scene that left me chuckling. Omg, I am still laughing thinking about the phone call.
There is one thing I didn't like though. I was surprised at the end with Chaz's discovery. It was suddenly thrown out there, making me question if I had missed something. I would have definitely preferred more discussion on his condition.
Collaring Chaz is a fantastic addition to the Dante's Infernal series. Joel Abernathy has created a fabulously messy world and these extremely chaotic characters who continue to keep me intrigued and riveted. These men are absolutely addicting and I can't wait to get more of this band. If you're in the mood for messy and angsty, this is your read.
At this point, I've read dozens of MM rockstar romances, but none of them have been quite as addicting and emotional as this one. Maybe it's because I'd already met Chaz and Raf in book 1 of this series, but I was in love with their characters from the very start. The way Chaz so eagerly pitched in for the band wherever he was needed, only to be shut out and not taken seriously made me want to cry. I could see Chaz's worth way before he saw it in himself, and I wanted to protect him from all the people who didn't treat him right. Raf didn't speak to me on quite the same level, but how could I not love the man who stood up for Chaz and repeatedly tried to show him how valuable he is? When the two of them brought their steamy friends-with-benefits relationship into a Master/pup exploration, I thought my head was going to explode with how ridiculously hot their scenes were. I've never been into puppy play or medical kink, but holy heck did Raf and Chaz open my eyes to it. The sheer depth of emotion between these men was overwhelming in the best way, and I was all too eager to get swept away with it all. When drama started going down with the band and competing record labels, I reveled in the pure angsty delight. I don't always like books with a bunch of drama, but in this case I thought it was necessary to snap Raf and Chaz out of their comfortable denial and force them to face what was going on around them. It didn't stop me from wanting to scream and wail when Chaz returned his collar, but it was all worth it to get the two of them into a healthier headspace. I wouldn't exactly call their reunion a fairytale ending, but it was certainly fitting for who Raf and Chaz are.
**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
He really didn't see himself as contributing to the band or being a big part of Dantes Inferno. He didn't stick up for himself. He self medicated his depression and felt grateful they kept him in the band. I just felt so crushed for him.
Chaz loves Raphael and is happy receiving the scraps of "friends with benefits " that Raphael "gifts" him. Ugh. Yeah I'm not entirely fond of Raphael. But in Raphael’s defense, he was in love with Dante and I think he just never really looked at Chaz and saw him as a potential love interest-- just friend with benefits.
At any rate, I was glad Chaz volunteered to sub for Raphael. Chaz seemed to ease into it easily. There wasn't an overload of kink but I think it showed Raphael that Chaz was compatible with him and belonged with him.
When Chaz realized he would always be second fiddle to Dante.. I was happy but then not. I think Chaz deserved better.
Raphael did slightly redeem himself by end of the story ;) I liked him well enough.
Slight spoiler-- As for the mental health diagnosis, I feel Chaz depicted manic depressive more. I think just the pressure of being famous, being in love with someone who doesn't return it, and feeling not good enough --- is enough to warrant addiction issues. He was depressed., had low self esteem, anxiety, weight loss, drug abuse and insomnia.
We didnt need the mental health diagnosis and it didn't really address the issue. Just said he is on meds for it. I feel its a huge event in someone's life and has major effects for it to be so understated.
That aside, its a great story. Im looking forward to Drake and Sterlings story!!!!
Ohhhh this is an angsty one! Not a ton of suspense, but the spice and tension make up for that! I loved this one so so much! Chaz is just the broken boy of the band who wants to be loved and appreciated, and let’s anyone and everyone walk all over him. Rafael is the cynical older member of the band that just wants a pup to call his own, but he’s struggling with some hang ups from his past (aka Dante🙄).
I seriously ADORED Chaz’s character. I literally just wanted to hug him all throughout this book!! His intrusive thoughts are loud, and the way in which he just wants to please everyone is even more in your face. I hated it for him; hated how his bandmates would treat him, and how much he allowed it. That being said, when Chaz finally stood up for himself I SCREAMED!! I was so freaking happy for him!! We’ve all been there—we’ve all let someone or someones walk all over us because we love them and just want to be in their life—but we also all get to that point when enough is enough. When Chaz hit that point and had Raf at his back, supporting him?! HELL. YES. I absolutely loved the way Chaz got his life back at the end of this book!!
The pup play in this book is SO GOOD!! Raf is seriously such an amazing dom/master for Chaz both in and out of the bedroom. He teaches Chaz what he wants in his pup and their relationship flourishes. The spice is top notch and hot as hell! Chaz and Raf checked allllll my boxes when it came to their bedroom/club activities!
Honestly I loved book one, but this book farrrrrrr exceeds it!! Chaz easily became one of my favorite characters!
I'd been looking forward to Rafael's story since reading "Taming Dante" (Book 1) and enjoyed it even more than that book. "Collaring Chaz" follows bandmates and friends-with-benefits Rafael and Chaz as they enter into a Master/pup relationship (their explorations are smokin' hot!) and feelings intensify and deepen from there. With Raf overcoming his long-unrequited love of friend and bandmate Dante, Chaz is dealing with addiction and mental health issues on top of secretly being in love with Raf. Their bumpy relationship journey is emotional, raw and angsty, and so worth it.
Chaz's low sense of self-worth as a person and musician (no thanks to Dante, *grumble*) was heartbreaking at times and left me feeling about as protective of him as Raf did, which was surprising since I didn't expect to get so wrapped up in this story. After years of largely being treated like a doormat, seeing his self-esteem and confidence grow by book's end was as satisfying as his and Raf's HEA.
"Collaring Chaz" could be read as a standalone, but I'd say knowing the character backstories and relationship dynamics established in "Taming Dante" made for a more enriched read. And wow, considering the MCs of Book 3, this series is only getting more intense! I received an advance reading copy of this book and have left this honest review voluntarily.
Rafael Martin (lead guitar, Master) & Chaz Lockheed (bass, pup)
Dante, Rafael, and Chaz all went to school together, all started the band together, though Chaz was a year behind them in school. Chaz has always had a crush on Rafael, and Rafael has always had a crush on Dante.
With friendship, proximity, and the adrenaline rush of performing on stage, the three of them all fucked each other one time or another (pre- Cash), but without realizing it, Rafael has been with no one besides Chaz for months. Unfortunately, Rafael is a Dom with a fondness for pups and as far as he knows Chaz is as vanilla as they come. But when Rafael gets a chance to take Chaz to the club for a “I’ll try anything once” visit, he finds a trusting submissive and an adorable pup.
(By the way, the perceived mismatch is unfortunate, because Rafael getting his Dom on is smokin’ hot.)
In the meantime, Dante is in full perfectionist mode and is annoyed with the amount of mistakes Chaz is making in the studio. When they all thought Chaz was out of earshot they discuss finding someone else to record the remaining tracks with them, bringing Chaz back for the tour.
Chaz is already oversensitive about being the mediocre performer among great talents, so the break is a big dig on his self esteem. The new pup play with Rafael is new and exciting, but with Rafael in the studio, he has too much time on his hands. So he buys an acoustic guitar and plays around with songwriting. The highlight being a song expressing his unrequited love for Rafael.
Chaz shares his musical experiments with a former producer, for mixing help, but has no intention of putting it out there. Unfortunately crossed wires has his friend polishing his submission up into an EP, assuming he’s about to jump ship for a solo career.
The tour resumes, but Dante and Cash’s upcoming nuptials in Vegas puts a strain on Rafael and Chaz’s new relationship. Rafael has one last surge of jealousy over Dante choosing Cash. To work out his feelings he finishes a song he wrote about Dante, using it to gain closure. But suddenly the yearning lyrics feel like they speak to Chaz, not Dante. Unfortunately, Chaz hears the song and he convinces himself he’ll always be second to Dante in Rafael’s heart.
So after the wedding, Rafael says “I love you” and Chaz says it’s time to step back for the sake of our friendship. Chaz spirals out of control, abusing drugs & alcohol, almost missing a command performance press conference where a reporter reveals his secret song is out there and gaining interest rapidly. Betrayal.
Chaz quits the band, ending up in a bad situation with an evil manager and a sadistic band member, both manipulating him and pushing the kink play in a noncon direction. But Rafael is determined to do whatever he can to save Chaz. After all, they have an open ended Master-pup contract and Chaz is still Rafael’s.
Love Rafael and Chaz’s initial chemistry. They are so good together when they each stay out of their own way. Love the pup play. But there was something about the mutual “I’m not good enough” phase that I found annoying. Raf, Chaz has worshiped you as long as you’ve been friends. And, Chaz, a Dom with a fondness for pups is inclined to like a bit of a needy sub.
Oh, my angst loving heart—why? Why must you love it so much.
Wow. Wow. Wow.
Collaring Chaz was an angst-filled novel and I loved every heart-wrenching second of it.
Chaz always felt like he played second fiddle in life; to his band, his sometimes-friend-with-benefits, to his friends, to everything. On top of an undiagnosed mental health condition, Chaz suffers from insecurities abound, especially when his love feels unrequited by his friend/lover/bandmate Rafael.
Rafael is half in love with his childhood best friend who is engaged to another man. He fills his heartache with Dom tendencies, friend-with-benefits, and music. He's a mess, and not in the rockstar sense you would expect. Nope, that fun is limited to his head and his heart where they battle out his true feelings.
Prepare yourself for tons of angst, steam, and some seriously heart-clenching moments in this one as Raf and Chaz navigate their friendship, feelings, rockstar life, and eventually their HEA. I absolutely adored book 2, the same as book 1. This is an amazing series so far and I CAN'T WAIT for book 3 where you know there will be plenty of sexual tension to burn the pages.
Love hurts and heals in this beautiful story. Oh my aching heart! I had to wait a couple of days after reading this story to write this review. This is a brutally angsty novel with heartfelt pain and suffering. Self worth issues, drug abuse, self mediating, undiagnosed behavioral health that impact functioning and so many toxic exchanges create the basis for a powerful and insightful story. Our sweet man who needs love and so much help does get the help and love he needs but it is a twisty and turny journey that broke my heart. Chaz and Rafael are characters that will live on in my heart.
The characters did grow and become more of their better selves in this story and it was really special to see all of the band take a step forward in healthier interactions and more self-awareness. The writing flowed and the plot was solid. This is an intense read that will touch your heart.
This is book two of the Dante's Infernal series and can be read as a stand-alone. However this is a wonderful series and I would recommend reading the books in sequence for maximum enjoyment.
I was gifted this book from the author and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
This book was absolutely 1000% perfection. It was sweet with loads of heat. Kinks galore without diving too deeply into the kink world in general (ie the entire book isn’t just about the BDSM community or strict protocol). The way the author dives into Chaz’s insecurities and mental health issues was just wonderful. I was happy to see Raf finally see the shining diamond in front of him. (I don’t want to detract from his side of the story but Chaz is just one of my most favorite m/m characters now. I want to give him a hug.)
I will admit I am not a fan of books that make me cry a lot. This book made me cry a whole, whole lot. Chaz is the kind of character you can’t help but empathize with and adore. But the tears I shed felt almost cathartic. I don’t know why but it felt like I was feeling the experience of Chaz’s hard earned happiness and it was so worth it.
I go to bed early but stayed up until 3 am to finish this because I simply couldn’t put it down. (I actually tried around 1 am and couldn’t sleep not knowing what happened.) I wish I could give this book more than five stars.
This is a story full of emotions. Chaz is going through a lot and the more he pushes his emotions down and covers them with drugs and alcohol the more the worse things get. Chaz has always felt like the odd man out and anytime he tries to assert himself he gets shot down. Just when he thinks that he might be gaining some ground his world crumbles. Rafael seems farther and farther out of his reach and Chaz does something that will change everything but what will it cost Chaz and the rest of the group?
I enjoyed Chaz and Rafael’s story. The two have a complicated and hot relationship. It was nice to see their relationship grow and change into something deeper. Seeing Chaz grow and find himself made for a good read. Rafael does some inner searching as well and the two must decide if they want to fight for what they have or let it slip away. Their story is an engaging read that is not only hot but emotional as well. A lot of things are going on in this story alongside Chaz and Rafael’s relationship. Everyone in the group begins to grow and learn giving the readers a well-rounded story with strong characters.
I read taming Dante, the first book in the series, and I really really loved it. I was very excited to read the sequel and it did not disappoint. It was a lot angstier than I expected but I think that it made it even better. I wanted to hug Chaz and make all his worries go away. I really felt for him, he broke my heart and made me cry. I thought that the way the relationship between the three best friends and members of the group was portrayed was very well done. They’re all flawed people who have been through a lot and they’re a part of a flawed industry that takes advantage of people. Their actions reflect that and as painful as it was to see them hurt each other I’m just glad it all worked out in the end. Raf and Chaz had beautiful chemistry but their journey was really really hard before they finally got their happy ending. And I’m really glad they did. Also, I’m extremely curious to read Drake’s book. He’s not a likable character but he’s very intriguing. I can’t wait!
received an ARC of this book for an honest review.
Chaz was a brilliant MC, for me. I loved seeing his development from the first book, and through the course of this one. While I’m not sure that I buy into Raf never telling Chaz anything about his kink, even though Dante knew all about it, I liked how Raf respected the trust that Chaz placed in his hands. Possibly my favorite thing was that as Chaz grew into his submission, he also grew into a stronger, and healthier person.
Rafael was less compelling for me. Maybe because we got more insight into Chaz’s growth, but Raf was not as complex. He was already comfortable in both his music and his kink. His biggest challenge was in seeing Dante for the friend that he is, and not the ideal that Raf had built up in his mind. Once that happened, he was immediately focused on Chaz.
Overall, I liked this book, and I was glad that Chaz and Raf got their HEA. I am super excited to read the next book, seeing who will be the MC’s. I LOVE a good enemies to lovers story, and this has the potential to be epic.
