Cinders Fall:

Rate this book
A viral epidemic of unknown origin sweeps across a startled nation, transforming ordinary people into ravenous beasts, immune to pain. The government reacts quickly as vast forces are mobilized, and heroes rise to battle the "Broken" before the contagion spreads…

But this story isn’t about those battles, or those heroes. Cinders Fall is about the people who slip through the cracks. While the world rushes to confront imminent danger, what happens to those who fall behind?

Devin Hansler would readily admit he should have been among the first to perish in a zombie apocalypse. An out-of-work animator with few skills away from his computer, Devin experiences life passively—a series of unconnected events—each day a puzzle box of disappointment, until one fateful morning, he discovers what happens when barred doors splinter beneath the blows of the infected, forcing him to confront his demons, figuratively and literally, and to finally take decisive action.

With his Seattle home under siege, Devin learns he will do anything to keep his family safe—but will it be enough?

Cinders Fall, the first book of The Broken Series, is a claustrophobic mix of suspense and graphic zombie horror.

"Walking in the footsteps of Virginia Woolf, Madrid deftly marries the realities of this grim, desperate world with a rich, vibrant reverie that lives inside the minds of his characters." Joel Bahr, Bahr Books

Cinders of Life

Life definitely changed fast for Devin when the disease hit. He floundered in life just doing what was necessary which infuriated his ex-wife Marie. He loves his daughter Madeline and as he, Anders, Marie, and Madeline along with Nestor struggle to survive attacks by the broken, Devin begins to grow into the person he was meant to be. Anders is an interesting character who demonstrates not only strength but helps Devin discover his true nature. No military heroes just everyday people struggling to survive the unimaginable. I enjoyed this novel, interesting story line along with realistic and we'll developed characters. I look forward to the next book!

The story was very good, a nice take on the Zombie Apocalypse. The characters were believable and the action sequences well written. I raced through the last few chapters hoping for the best for our heroes but fearing the worst! Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for book two. Extra credit for setting the book in Seattle!
