If ever there was an intense volume of Trigun, "Wolfwood" would at least be its equal. Since the day Vash spotted his decimated soul in the middle of the desert, Nicholas Wolfwood has become a favorite of fans. A man of the cloth with a tortured soul and a past full of bullets, the protector of our story's hero, Wolfwood might just be reaching the end of his pew. Ironically, the past has come back to attack him. And by that we mean that Livio, the young man Nicholas once befriended. Livio is more than a match for Wolfwood, having been trained by the same master, Chapel. And now the master and both disciples meet in a deadly face-off, and only one man will survive. But readers are in for more than just one surprise in this climactic volume of Trigun.
Screaming, crying, throwing up, exploding, and so on and so forth.
This was the best and the most emotionally devastating volume so far, and that's saying quite a lot. I'm not going to go into any specifics, just, 😭😭 How can I love & peace in these conditions. I had to pretty much take it page by page. It's a lot. Nightow is a master of stabbing you in the feelings and twisting the knife again and again. You will probably cry. You should still read it, in fact, you should read it because of it. What a brilliant, harrowing, perfect volume. Now I need to take a break before I tackle the next few.
What's with the sex doll jumpscare on the front and the end covers though?? 😂
But on the other hand, I think I'd have liked to see more of the whole Church of Violence deal and exactly what Wolfwood and Livio did as their day jobs. Some of the good ol' assassionation they alluded to. As it stands, it strikes as more telling than showing.
Also, even on the second go I'm not entirely sure how and of what Wolfwood bought it. At least all the emotions and reactions were on point.

had suspicions about the Big Event that happened in this volume but. never in my wildest dreams could i have predicted everything else that surrounded it. i finished this volume, stayed up until 3am thinking about it, made 5 separate drawings about it the next day, made a playlist, designed a new back patch, and still couldn't pick up the next one for like 10 days
nightow you were insane for this. you were insane for this
nicholas d. wolfwood the man that you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Team Vashwood returns! The epic battle in volume nine continues here but with Vash at Wolfwood's side.
But....GASP! I shed tears in this volume! I am now dreading the end of the series! If the foreshadowing at the end of this volume is indeed what is in store, I am going to be very sad... sniff
This has been one of my favorite volumes because I understood almost all of it!!
feel like PURE shit just want him BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Legitimately though - what a gut punch. In such a dynamic, gunslinging action series, it’s the quiet peaceful moments that are the most heavy. Don’t think I’ve gotten that emotional over [redacted] in a long time. Simultaneously want to read this every day and never read it again in my life

I was looking over my list of manga series that I have to keep in order to keep track of what volume I'm on, and I noticed that I had neglected to list Trigun Maximum here on Goodreads. I know why. I stopped reading Trigun Maximum 13 months ago (in fact, I know the exact day).
So, you might be wondering why I'm a) listing volume 10 instead of 1, and b) I just gave it 5 stars when it was the volume that made me quit. Prepare to have your curiousity satisfied, but at the expense of reading some big fat hairy spoilers. If you've never seen the anime or read the series and you're going to, stop now. For reals.
Like possibly most Trigun fans, Wolfwood is my favorite character. I've seen the anime, and his story is handled somewhat differently there than in the comic--but it does end pretty much the same way. But this final fight took so long, having started in volume 9, that I ACTUALLY BEGAN TO THINK THAT WOLFWOOD WOULD SURVIVE IT. Yup. I loved the character so much and the fight is so well written/drawn, sheer stupid optimism was born. Right to the end, I thought he just might make it. And so, this was a downright excruciating read. I mean painful. I hurt for Vash, and I hurt for myself, and when this volume was over, I could not bring myself to continue the series without Wolfwood. And that's why this thing is 5 stars: a character that I couldn't go on without, a fight done so well it made me believe he might survive even thought I have seen the anime and knew better, a death so painful I grieved for his friend and felt a loss myself. As much as I'd like to f*cking hate Nightow-san for doing this to me, to create that kind of response is pretty remarkable. Even if it cost a reader.
I very well might go back to Trigun Maximum some day and see it through to the end. I wonder if I'll ever be able to read the first ten volumes again, though.

Ya sabía lo que pasaba y aún así he acabado SOBBING LIKE A CHILD? Si. YOU LOOK BETTER WITH A SMILE ON YOUR FACE" MIRA NO PUEDO.
This is another one where it is hard to tell exactly what is going on in the fight scenes (which the whole book was one big fight scene). Some character development for Wolfwood, but other than that it was mostly filler.
“what are you talking about? you should worry about yourself. i know what i’m doing. my body… it can’t move… i couldnt save livio… i couldnt save all of you… you’re right… i bit off more than i could chew… but… don’t worry… i’ve made a friend. he’s not as big of an asshole as me. that’s right. with him… we could have done this as a team. probably…”

HE FUCKING SAID IT
“i’m sorry… …spikey…”

I think this volume was like an epiphany to me in some way. I was always kind of surprised how much a sci-fi series like Trigun got me so immersed into it because it’s usually not my cup of tea. But this volume, which to me portrays the most beautifully Vash and Wolfwood’s relationship is what made me figure it out.
"That is why after all was said and done, I wanted to share my tomorrows with him."
I think the author has a very unique and beautiful way to portray the bitterness of loneliness. Livio desperately wanted someone to need him, to be used even if it turns him into a simple puppet. And Vash, who spend 150 years to run away from the humans he loves oh so dearly, finding someone who understood him, who acknowledged his purpose in this life despite having very different morals and a very different past, someone so different from him that he was probably the one who could understand him the most. Wolfwood was the person he spend his journey with and was the one who could see through every fake smiles of his.
Wolfwood’s death was a perfect conclusion for his character. His last words wishing for Vash to smile, the kids throwing confettis for him, the bell of church ringing and so on… all the details and care added to this scene was a sublime way for him to rest. He was able to fulfill what he always thought for, he protected what he cherished the most. He can finally rest.
Vash calm was also very impactful, him sacrificing a great amount of power to protect the place where Wolfwood will be buried, carrying his cross showing he will carry the burdens of his dear friend until the end. Just as Rem, Wolfwood will keep living in Vash’s memories until he’s finally able to find a quiet place to live.

No merecía. Tendría que haber sido capaz de ver el final de toda esta historia. Me cago en Nightow y le como las cacas a la vez.
Wolfwood and Vash sitting on a sofa having a last drink together on a sofa on the edge of town… goddamn, some really striking panels at the end. And the open mouth sobbing from him at the ship leaving? Pain.
Really fucking good. Very sad to see Nicholas go, but I’m glad his death was handled in a very peaceful and bittersweet way— especially after all of the violence in this volume.
(4.5 stars maybe because the silly haha goofy funny bit with Livio in the next chapter felt like whiplash but the action in the fights and paneling of Wolfwood’s death scene was *chef kiss*)

One of my favorite (romantic) lines EVER: "After all was said and done, I wanted to share my tomorrows with him". Hits me directly in the heart every single time i read it.
My favorite fight of the entire series; Wolfwood vs Razlo. Blows my mind every time. Wolfwood's countdown is so hype.
A moment that will make me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME: Wolfwood's "welcome home". It's been nearly 10 years since I first read this scene and I STILL cry like a baby.

I cried for 20 minutes straight over the ending of this volume. It was very devastating the way Wolfwood died and seeing Vash's reaction killed me. I binged read the whole series but once I got to this volume, I had to stop for a couple of days to get my bearings again after this whole whirlwind of a volume.

i have never cried harder to a character death before. the absolute anguish i went through reading this volume even tho i already knew what was going to happen. this volume really highlights nightow’s talent as a story teller and artist. every sentence and every panel is filled with heartbreak beyond compare. definitely will be a story that will stick with me for life.
