Three strangers--a hardworking waitress, an arrogant mercenary, and a mysterious samurai--form an uneasy alliance as they search for the enigmatic Sunflower Samurai and cross paths with numerous characters, including ninjas, assassins, and princes in disguise.
The story was just getting better, but it just ended or discontinued, that's why I gave this volume a 3.5 star! I was anticipating for the next volume and it just finished. So sad! I like the art style, it's simple but captivating. There's this one shogun from the previous volume is drawn pretty well, and Mugen too! I think Fuu is my favourite character, feisty and funny. The interaction between the 3 main characters, Mugen, Jin and Fuu is priceless, haha, it suddenly reminded me of Luffy, Zoro and Nami. When one of them is missing, I felt a little disappointed because the way they behave is so stupid and yet captivating. Overall, it's a 4 star duology for me!
I could almost score lower; it's missing the superb directing, animation, soundtrack, and voice acting of the anime. It almost is hardly worth it. But what I did get out of it was just fun, it was not the same stories seen in the anime, we see more hints of Mugen caring for clueless Fu, and I think there's more hints of what could follow for at least two of the characters.
The anime has an abrupt ending. While the manga does not change that, it does drop some characterization that makes me think, "oh so s/he could be this or do that after they part ways". It's not much, and perhaps my imagination is overworking, but I feel like I get a better feel for where they might go at the end. Which I did like.
I adored the anime, so when I found out there was a two volumes out I had to get them. Plus, the fact I found both at the same time on clearance at half price books made it even better. I feel as if you are the fan of the anime then you should really get these two volumes. One is novelization of the first episode and the other is a few short stories which really kinda goes an extra step for fans to have.
I don't put high expectations on manga that are based on other sources...
Especially when those original stories are as undeveloped as video game and anime plots. This is the latter. It seems unfare to judge the manga harshly because I've watched the original work -- which I thought was brilliant, btw. Truthfully, what I found great in the animation doesn't hold up in the manga, and that's the dynamism of the fight scenes. Yes, the fighting is exciting here, but it misses that glorious hip hop vibe... the humour and amazement of "break-dance-fighting.
However, I don't think the manga can really be separated from the anime. Without it, it becomes an incomplete humorous and uninteresting story about random people who meet and form a shallow bond that involves travel and fighting. There's no depth of character, or actual plot. It's just barely a story. it must be read with a complete understanding of the original form to be enjoyed... It's almost like these short vignettes were storyboarded for the anime, but just didn't quite make the cut... So they decided to use their scraps to write a quick manga.
Obviously, I'm not super impressed. But, I still give it a high ranking because the anime is that worthwhile. If you're going to read this... Also plan to watch it at some point. Otherwise, in my opinion, you'll just be wasting time.
Again, this manga follows Fuu, Mugen, and Jin on their search for the sunflower samurai. Again, all kinds of adventures occur within - Mugen is rude, Fuu is adorable, Jin is mysterious.
I absolutely loved this one. It felt like the relationship between the characters had developed more so the way they interacted with one another was excellent, especially as I was missing the anime after finishing it off. Also, the bonus material in this one was just awesome and quite fun to read.
