Η τωρινή γενιά, μια και ζει με το διαρκές άγχος μιας παγκόσμιας καταστροφής, θα 'πρεπε τουλάχιστο να εκτιμάει την τύχη της που έχει τη δυνατότητα να αναπνέει τον ίδιο αέρα πάνω στη γη με τους δυο μυθικούς ήρωες, το Λώρενς της Αραβίας που διασχίζει την απεραντοσύνη της μυστηριώδους ερήμου πάνω στο περήφανο πολεμικό άτι του ή που προχωράει λικνιζόμενος πάνω στις καμπούρες της γενναίας γκαμήλας του για μια συνάντηση που ο Θεός ξέρει τι τον περιμένει... και στην άλλη άκρη του κόσμου, τον Γκράουτσο τον αναπόφευκτο που βιώνει μια πρόσκαιρη παρουσία στα σύνορα της λήθης, αφιερωμένος σε ριψοκίνδυνες μεταφορές χωρίς άλογο και γκαμήλα, αλλά που ποτέ δεν το βάζει κάτω, καθώς σφυράει χαρούμενα περπατώντας στα βουλεβάρτα με πονηρό χαμόγελο και με γοητευτικό και ακαταμάχητο βλέμμα. Anything that can't be done in bed isn't worth doing at all.
Beds ~~ Groucho Marx
As a kid growing up, I loved The Marx Brothers. My Favorite was Harpo; his childlike antics appealed to the nine year old me. I still love Harpo, but as I grew older I really embraced the wit of Groucho. So, when Groucho discussed his 1930 book, Beds during an interview with Dick Cavett from 1969, I knew I had to track it down and read it.
Beds was originally published in 1930. After being out of print for decades, Beds was republished in 1976 with a new introduction by Groucho, as well as new photos.
Beds is loaded with Groucho's deadpan humor. Groucho draws inspiration from such luminaries as Freud, Bernard Shaw, Calvin Coolidge, Thomas Edison, Rip Van Winkle, monobedders and polybedders, Mark Twain, and a chorus of bed hoppers.
The humor reflects the time in which it was written ~~ 1929 ~~ there is a passage directed towards Herbert Hoover warning him about the revenge voters will inflict on him in the 1932 election.
My experience is, that people are most likely to listen to reason when in bed.
I did enjoy Beds . But like most comedians who publish books, their material is better heard than read. As much as I enjoyed reading Beds , I really wanted to hear Beds . The humor here begs to be delivered as only Groucho can deliver it.
Beds is recommended for fans of Groucho, and those who love vintage humor. It is a quick, mindless read, and worth the time for all Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields & Mae West fans.
I don't think Napoleon spend enough time in bed. If he had stayed in his own four-poster instead of getting up when the alarm rang, he would never have met his Waterloo, but he probably would have met some one a great deal more interesting.

Πολύ μικρό βιβλιαράκι από τον πασίγνωστο κωμικό, το οποίο διαβάζεται χαλαρά σε είκοσι λεπτά. Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι ξετρελάθηκα ή ότι κατουρήθηκα στα γέλια, πάντως είχε τη φάση του και γενικά πέρασα καλά όσο κράτησε. Απλά σε αρκετά σημεία ξέφευγε από το θέμα του (όποιο κι αν ήταν αυτό), ενώ γενικά δεν κατάλαβα ποιος ακριβώς ήταν ο σκοπός του συγγραφέα. Ίσως απλώς ήθελε να κάνει την πλάκα του, τέτοιος τύπος που ήταν!

▪️Como suele ser habitual, antes de dar mi opinión siempre os cuento un poquito de qué va cada libro. Pues en este caso no va a ser así y por la única razón de que me ha resultado tan surrealista y con tan poco sentido, que no sabría realmente decir qué argumento tiene.
▪️¿Quién no conoce a Groucho Marx y a sus famosos hermanos? Obviamente, yo sí y no porque me gusten, me hagan reír o me gusten sus películas, porque no es así. Soy una persona con mucho sentido del humor, pero ese tipo de humor tan absurdo, más que hacerme reír, lo que provoca es que se me quede una expresión en la cara como pensando "¿De verdad existen personas que se ríen con estas cosas?". Pero como casi todo en la vida, es respetable y hay que comprender que a cada cuál le puede hacer gracia un tipo de humor diferente. Y ya centrándonos en este libro de apenas unas 40 páginas (afortunadamente), no me ha gustado absolutamente nada. Es aburrido, tedioso, un auténtico sinsentido...no sé en qué estado se encontraría Groucho para escribir algo así o estaba perfectamente y es que él es así de peculiar.
▪️Como ya ha quedado más que claro que no me ha gustado "Camas" ni nunca me ha gustado nada que tenga que ver con este conocido actor, voy a dejar de "cebarme" soltando cosas negativas porque tampoco es mi estilo hacer las cosas así, pero para gustos...🤷🏻♀️.

A great 10 minute read. As Groucho says, he is imminently qualified to write this book, having slept in everything from bassinets to beds of roses. It contains many practical tips, such as the fact that not only can you get to sleep by adding up sheep, you can stay awake by subtracting them. Also, it includes a good discussion of whether to hide under the bed vs. in the wardrobe. Educational from beginning to end.

It's a strange experience reading what is essentially a slightly longer McSweeney's piece from 90 years ago: more of it doesn't work than does, but still interesting to see how Groucho translates to text.

Χωρίς ίχνος υπερβολής θα απεύθυνα αυτή την ανάρτηση αποκλειστικά σε πολύ ιδιαίτερους και ψαγμένους όχι αναγνώστες αλλά ανθρώπους. Αν δεν εχεις αφήσει τον εγωισμό σου στην άκρη, αν δεν έχετε γνωριστεί και καταλήξει σε μια ευχάριστη συμβίωση που βασίζεται στην ισότητα κι όχι στην επιβολή, τότε δεν μπορείς να διαβάσεις Γκράουτσο Μαρξ και να τον απολαύσεις. Γιατί στην περίπτωση αυτή δεν υπάρχει η φράση "δε μου κάνει το βιβλίο"! Εσύ δεν κάνεις στο βιβλίο κι αυτή είναι η μόνη αλήθεια!
Όλη η δημιουργία "κρεβάτια" δεν μπορεί παρά να χαρακτηριστεί πηγαία! Πηγή είναι η ίδια η προσωπικότητά του που γράφει όπως έζησε, όπως έμαθε να υπάρχει στον τρομερά γελοίο μας κόσμο που ο Γκράουτσο και τα δέρφια του μετέτρεψαν σε ένα αστείο θεατρικό με πρωταγωνιστές όλους εμάς.

Για την ακρίβεια τα "κρεβάτια" είναι το αποτέλεσμα που προκύπτει όταν ενα τέτοιο αεικίνητο πνεύμα αποφασίζει να γράψει ολόκληρο βιβλίο για ένα αντικείμενο που χρησιμοποιούμε όλοι μας απο τη στιγμή της γέννησής μας μέχρι το τέλος μας.
Αποτέλεσμα; Αυτό που θα μπορούσε να προκαλεί ένα ανησυχαστικό αίσθημα γίνεται καθαρή διασκεδαστική απόλαυση!

Un libro entretenido en el que se puede ver al autor detrás en todo momento. De carácter surrealista, divertido, se lee en un suspiro (es muy cortito).

Curiosamente, cuando Groucho terminó de escribir este libro, se producia la crisis del 30 y la gente en US se suicidaba o se metía en la cama buscando protección. En un momento Groucho dice que una buena forma de encontrar el sueño era llorando, pero era difícil llorar si no habían comprado acciones de General Motors a 130...Cambien el nombre del papel, calculen las pérdidas de la crisis sub prime y... todos a la cama, ya!!

Sure it's dated (actually twice: it was written in the '30s and has photos from the '70s), but Groucho fans will like this little book that takes mere minutes to read. It's filled with innuendo (or as Groucho says: "out the door and innuendo") like the first chapter, "Essay on the Advantages of Sleeping Alone" -- it's blank.

A great, albeit quick read. I actually took longer than I should have as I finally found an affordable copy of the first edition printing from 1930 and wanted to be careful with it. I've been searching since I was 12 years old. It usually costs an arm and a leg. All of which have nothing to do with reviewing the book.

La única forma de leer y disfrutar este libro es, pues... en la cama. Editado en plena crisis de 1929 se trata de una serie de ideas y chistes hilados en un intento de ensayo de menos de 100 páginas sobre el placer de las camas y el difícil arte de dormir feliz en ellas, solo o acompañado.
Es muy lúdico, casi bobo, pero también disfrutable!

Muchos chistes para esa epoca, pero alguno que otro bueno( a mi me pasa lo mismo con mi hijo!), tendria que leerlo en ingles.
