My absolute favourite story: "Wings & Fire" by Dan Alatorre, that's filled with beautiful sentences like these: "Her voice was hushed and yet loud; far away and nearby at the same time. Each syllable sounded like it had been whispered from a speeding car on the highway, to a bystander on the side of the road. Warped and spinning, but as clear as the morning sun". Other stories I really liked: "Abraham's theory on the paradigm of choice and free will" - Jessica Bakkers "Home Invasion" - Adele Marie Park "One of us" - Christine Valentor etc...
This book is packed full of great stories featuring everything from werewolves to electronic personal assistants. I t would take way too long to tell you about all of them so I thought it would be fitting to tell you about the first and the last one, both written by editor Dan Alatorre. The two related tales, like bookends to the collection, which is fitting since they are both about a book. In both stores, a group of high school students stumble upon an ancient, magical book with surprising though not entirely unpredictable results. Like the best of horror stories, most of these are more surprising than nightmarish and in those surprises lies much of their charm. I loved this book and I'll definitely be looking for other stories by many of the authors featured here and, really, isn't' that the whole point of a collected anthology. Highly recommended.
This compilation of stories by Dan Alatorre is captivating. Each story is a masterpiece by various authors. Some were terrifying. A group of teens mess with an ancient tome and the consequences are dire. An innocent 21 year old's invitation to a party by her estranged grandfather lands her in a bizarre trap. Tasmanian devils and werewolves as well as other otherworldly creatures have their own agenda - not palatable to humans. Overall a great collection of short stories.
Normally, in an anthology, there are a few stories that don’t quite deliver the punch of the others. Not so with Wings and Fire. This is one of the best collections of stories I’ve read, all of the tales polished with slick writing and clever delivery. I was riveted from start to finish.
A few of the many gems that stood out for me are the stories by Roberta Eaton Cheadle and Jessica Bakkers, especially An Unsolvable Problem or Not by Cheadle and Tasmanian Devil by Bakkers. Other stories (among many) that struck a chord were Wings of Prosperity by Heather Kindt, Dark Obsession by Susan Lamb, Mary by Adele Marie Park, and The Great Potto by M.J. Mallon. Creepy, eerie, and mesmerizing!
Tales vary between spooky, sinister, and edge-of-your-seat suspenseful, but all are brilliant, delivering the gut punch stories of this nature should. Highly recommended! I thoroughly enjoyed this gem.

While many stories were not my typical genre to read, there were some really good stories here, including: Wings & Fire An Unsolvable Problem or Not - This one will make you think. Paradigm of Choice Even the stories that were not necessarily my cup of tea, I felt were well written by the individual authors, and I read every single one. I commend Dan Alatorre for putting these compilations together, and giving other authors the opportunity for a wider audience.
Read Wings & Fire by Dan Alatorre - amazing! This book is an ARC with 23 horror stories compiled by Alatorre. His story is titled Wings & Fire and it is twisty and creepy - loved it! Definitely recommend this story - horror at its best!
Some of these stories are funny, some dark fantasy/horror, some fantasy. They are all good short reads. Like the rest of the books in this series, they are amusing.
This anthology of short stories is only okay. Except for the stories (part 1 Wings & Fire and part 2 The Darkborn by Dan Alatorre) (this is why gave it 4 stars) the contributions are mediocre at best and they would make my rating a solid 3 stars). There were a couple of stories with potential, The Hand on the Wheel by Frank L. Parker, and Dark Obsession by Susan Lamb, but there were also a couple that makes you question whether or not this was the first story the author had ever written, or if there was an editor involved most remarkedly Zombie Perfume, by Dabney Farmer. Most people would likely find something they like, but unlike the other anthologies I've read that have been put together by Alatorre, this one misses the mark. I received an ARC of this book, and this is a voluntary review. All opinions here are solely mine.
I seem to be reading a lot of horror short stories lately. This generous collection of 24 stories from 16 authors fits the bill. There’s a wide range of tales here from a realistic and utterly gruesome home invasion to evil magic and fantasy. There are vampires, werewolves, zombies and, monsters in the woods. Some stories are shocking, others are clever, and there’s even a laugh or two.
As true with most anthologies, I enjoyed some stories more than others, but all were well written and cleanly edited. My favorites are usually those tales that offer something highly clever or original. A few that I thoroughly enjoyed: An Unsolvable Problem or Not, Abraham’s Theory on the Paradigm of Choice, Mary, The Classics, and The Great Potoo. Recommended to readers who are seeking a variety of horror short stories.
This an amazing anthology of horror stories. Each author brought their unique style writing and I loved each one. Some were serious, some devious, even occasionally whimsical but each was entertaining. This book was a great way to start the Halloween season. Enjoy!
