Well, color me surprised! Despite my love of all things magical girl (including the original Creamy Mami anime), the aggressively girly cover and abrasive title turned me off, possibly to the point where I wouldn't have read this if it wasn't for work. That would have been a shame, because this is a wonderful example of going back and re-examining a story from a different angle, or even just with the perspective of being older. Taking the point of view of the villain of the original series, the eponymous spoiled princess is actually just a young woman fighting to maintain relevance in an industry that's all too eager to throw her away for not being the newest thing anymore. Her boss is an absolute toad (which I think I was at least marginally aware of when I was younger), Mami/Yuu's not trying to hurt her, and she works hard to maintain her career - it's just that her boss is already moving on and doesn't seem to care about her anymore. "Spoiled princess" is an epithet laid upon her by a misogynist workplace culture.

That Emi Mitsuki does a great job mimicking the basic look of Akemi Takada's original character designs definitely helps as well, and I also like that the story remains set in the early 1980s. Overall this was just so much more than I was expecting, and fans of the original Creamy Mami should definitely pick it up.

This is apparently based on an anime from the 1980's, and the art style is really faithful to the original (I had to go searching for a YouTube clip of the opening animation, haha). It's sort of a spin off of the original show, I think? The focus on this manga is on Megumi Ayase - the "Spoiled Princess" of the title but actually she's worked very hard to become a top idol. Creamy Mami sort of stumbles onto the scene and Ayase is determined to find out who this secretive sudden superstar REALLY is. Fans of this 30 year old anime know that she's some sort of ... magical girl alien? I'm not really sure, and what I do know I learned from reading summaries of the original show, it's not really explained in volume 1 of this manga - maybe it will be explained in future volumes of this series, but as a stand-alone it, well, doesn't really stand very well on its own. Still, it's a cute story and I assume more of Creamy Mami's backstory will be revealed in future volumes and it will make more sense as the story continues!! The art style is VERY retro but also cute. Ayase is clearly supposed to be the villain of the piece, but I also found myself rooting for her. Hang in there, Ayase!!

Molto promettente.

Fame is fleeting, and popular idol Megumi is learning that lesson a little faster than she’d intended. Despite her best efforts, her company is infatuated with the mysterious Creamy Mami, a new idol who appeared out of nowhere. Yes, it’s a story of a rival who’s dealing with some idol threats...

First off, I should state that I have exactly zero experience with the original Creamy Mami, but this book does a good job making it pretty clear what the deal was. Magical girl, rival, etc etc. Toss in some animal sidekicks, serves six.

What this book does really, really well is engender sympathy for a rival who would typically be very one dimensional. Megumi’s not, minus one act towards the end that would have gotten her a cabinet position in the previous US government, a bad person.

No, she’s a driven professional who puts in the work and does everything right, so it’s completely reasonable that she’s incensed when some mysterious new flavour of the month comes along and knocks her off her perch.

In fact, I like her a lot more than I do Mami, which I don’t think is the intention. If anything, Megumi has to struggle with a fickle bastard of a boss (seriously, he gets smacked in this book but nowhere near enough) and a total drip of a manager. It’s some kind of miracle she’s made it as far as she has.

Then with Mami getting every break going AND having magic, it’s clear that Megumi is in a real ‘knife to a gun fight’ situation. Sure, summon a unicorn from nowhere, Mami, that’s fair. Poor Megumi’s forced obsolescence feels particularly miserable, but that’s showbiz, I suppose.

I guess I don’t think this book is necessarily to my tastes - I don’t like Mami very much at all and I am firmly behind Megumi’s sometimes wrongheaded but believable attempts to maintain her relevance. She’s being done dirty this whole book.

3 stars. I don’t dislike this, but I am also very aware that I am rooting for the character who’s going to end up losing and I don’t know that this volume made me want to read much more of this as a consequence.

If I had had any familiarity with the source material of this manga, I'm sure it would have been more meaningful for me, but I had no idea Creamy Mami was an actual character. I read up on it online once I finished and the story and characterizations made a lot more sense. Overall, even without that knowledge, I still found this pretty cute and I'll probably read more.

What can I say - I'm a Magical GirlTM fan who is easily enticed by cute covers. Guilty as charged.

I bought and read 'Magical Angel Creamy Mami and the Spoiled Princess, Vol. 1' despite knowing virtually nothing about the classic eighties anime it's based on, 'Creamy Mami'. Basically it's like a Magical GirlTM's 'Jem and the Holograms' for very young children? 'Hannah Montana' and 'Full Moon o Sagashite' with 'Kamichama Karin' sprinkles? The original, proto-'Mink' by Megumi Tachikawa?

But it turns out the new manga is accessible enough for a newbie like me. Its premise of a Magical GirlTM story told from the POV of an oblivious, nonmagical rival girl is very interesting, to say the least. That angle of the narrative is executed well, in my opinion.

The titular "spoiled princess" is Megumi Ayase. Though she isn't really spoiled at all. Nor is she much of an antagonist. The manga aims, hopefully, to elicit sympathy for Megumi, as she's a victim of the entertainment industry's systematic misogyny.

One example within the capitalist, corporate, marketing hell, that's relevant here: the music and idol industry. It is constantly churning up young girls for their attractiveness to the public (talent is a bonus, but still optional, and safe, forgettable, regurgitated mediocrity rules). It profits off these girls, exploits them, burns them out, and then callously discards them as soon as they inevitably become "too old" and have lost their spark. Or magic.

A new girl catches the attention of the male higher-ups - the men with the power, the power to make and break starlets - and that's the end of the previous girl (now a woman, older, wiser, jaded, exhausted, and breaking through no fault of her own) and her career, and the vicious cycle keeps going. Heaven forbid it is outright abusive, though tragically that is often the case for these female celebrities.

The music industry is especially ruthless in its misogyny. 'Magical Angel Creamy Mami and the Spoiled Princess, Vol. 1' gives us a glimpse into that horrible business and how it works.

Honestly I hate the studio manager/president character. I don't know if he's as bad in the anime, but here he is terrible, no matter how young and good-looking he is (I won't even bother remembering his name).

Megumi, you seriously shouldn't bother with him and his studio anymore. I know you're childhood friends and you built the studio "together", but that's now water under the bridge. He clearly doesn't care for you anymore - he even flat out states it more than once, and to your face. He laughs at your struggles and suffering. He only cares about money and exploiting young girls for all they're worth. He is a bona fide creep, too. He literally tells a little girl on the street how beautiful she'll be when she's older.

The president deserves every neck-turning slap Megumi smites him with.

Everything Megumi does in the manga, where she is the put-upon, threatened protagonist, is out of desperation, to save her career, and continue to be appreciated and validated for her talents. She will not be cast aside and forgotten about. She wants to remain relevant, and she still has her own special brand of magic within her.

'Magical Angel Creamy Mami and the Spoiled Princess, Vol. 1' definitely could have been more critical and damning of the music industry and idol culture, and given less panel time to the awful studio president, who deserves to get #metoo'd so badly. But as is, it is a cute, interesting story, with a dynamic and sympathetic "antagonist"-as-protagonist. Some of its twists and turns are funny and clever. Its magic, sparkles and cuteness are not always overt - it's mostly grounded for a Magical GirlTM story - but they're there.

I'll end on a couple of quotes from the mangaka, Emi Mitsuki, in the Afterword; the second of which says a lot about the manga and its purpose:

'Creamy Mami has always been a sanctuary for me! My eternal place of hope!! [...] I remember Megumi being such a scary character. BUT! [...] Once I grew up, I saw her differently. She struck me as an admirable person who worked incredibly hard and yet was struggling. That's what made me want to portray the good parts of her that I couldn't understand as a child.'

'Magical Angel Creamy Mami and the Spoiled Princess, Vol. 1' is an appealing, intriguing, entertaining little novelty, to add to my Milky Way galaxy-wide Magical GirlTM collection.

Final Score: 3.5/5

A few years ago, when small talent agency Parthenon Productions was just starting out, Megumi Ayase was their breakout star. Company manager Shingo Tachibana led her to believe that they’d work together to make Parthenon a success. And they did. But the “Milky Way Princess” is old news now, and in the idol singer business, that’s bad news. Shingo’s on the lookout for new talent, and then he finds Creamy Mami, a mysterious girl who has a magical way about her. Megumi’s not going to give up her star status without a fight though.

Magical Angel Creamy Mami was an anime that came out in 1983. In it, ten year old girl Yu Morisawa helps out an alien named Pino Pino. In gratitude, Pino Pino gives Yu a magical compact that allows her to change into a teenage version of herself. While wandering about in her teen form, Yu is scouted by Shingo, and her magical powers turn out to be perfect for being a television idol singer. She makes up the name “Creamy Mami” and has adventures both show biz and supernatural.

The show was a huge hit both in Japan and Europe, and launched the subgenre of “magical girl idol singers.” It’s also something of a time capsule of idol singer business culture in the early 1980s, when the talent generally debuted at age 16, had a year of glory, and then were retired to go on with their normal lives or possibly another show business career. Megumi’s unusual for the time period in lasting several years.

This tie-in manga retells the events of the story from Megumi’s point of view. In the anime, Megumi was an antagonist mean girl, jealous, ill-tempered and hostile to Creamy Mami. And she still is, but from a more sympathetic perspective. Megumi’s trained hard to elevate her natural talent and good looks into star quality, taking singing and dance lessons, and exercising to stay in shape. Mami, on the other hand, was just handed magical powers which do all the work for her (at least at first.)

And Shingo isn’t helping. As a businessman, he has no compunctions about doing what he thinks is best for the company. And if that means putting Megumi on the back burner while exploiting Creamy Mami’s fresh new popularity, he’s okay with that. He’s very blunt about this, which infuriates Megumi, who remembers how closely they worked together at the beginning. (Shingo is actually in love with Megumi, but thinks this should be obvious to her, so never bothers saying so.)

The art is good, but it’s working with the excellent character designs from the original anime, so has a boost there. And the storyline is charming.

One weakness this manga has is that since Megumi is out of the loop on what’s really going on with Creamy Mami, large parts of the story won’t make sense to someone who hasn’t seen the anime. (Or at least read spoilers.)

Content note: Megumi slaps Shingo. A lot. It’s understandable in context, he is an ass, but parents of younger readers may want to discuss why that sort of behavior is no longer acceptable. (And explain why Shingo should explain himself in a better way.)

This is listed as an all-ages book, and should be suitable for fourth-graders on up, but is most recommended if you’ve seen the anime.

Megumi on tuotantoyhtiönsä suosituin idoli, jota kuitenkin ollaan jo korvaamassa uusilla tähdillä.

Kaiken kaikkiaan ihastuttava aloitus sarjalle!

I wasn't familiar with the source material this is based on, but from what I've read online, this seems pretty true to the original. In this case, the story is being told from Megumi's point of view; she was essentially the villain of the anime, the "spoiled princess" of the title, but she gets a more sympathetic treatment here. Megumi is a hard working, very professional idol who takes her job seriously. The production company she works for, Pantheon Productions, was started by her friend Shinjo, and Megumi is the one that made the company successful- now , Shinjo is looking for the next hot thing, and is ready to forget Megumi. He finds Mami, talks her into appearing on t.v., and a new idol is born. No one seems to really care that they don't know her real name, or where she lives, or how to get hold of her (this is taking place in 1983, so there weren't cell phones yet), but Megumi suspects there's a lot more to Mami- something truly magical!
Fans of the anime will love this, I think- Emi Mitsuki is pretty obviously a fan, and has done a wonderful job of recreating the art style and feel of the original. Because we're getting the story from Megumi's perspective and not Mami's, we're not getting Mami's backstory right away, and I think that will appeal to fans of the series as well, it makes things interesting. If you're not familiar with the original series, it's still a fun, fluffy magical girl story that will leave you wanting to know just who Mami is! We do find out at the end, maybe...... *wink*

I definitely think this would be a very fun read for fans of the original anime! I haven't seen it, but I LOVED the note from the mangaka at the end to help me have a better appreciation for it! You could truly see her heart and love for the anime and I feel it bumped my rating up because of it! (I would have given this 3 stars otherwise.)

I overall enjoyed this though it wasn't a favorite. I would definitely read more volumes if my library had it though! Megumi may be "mean," but I think the mangaka was successful in showing how Megumi's struggle was real. She DOES work hard to be where she is at, but Creamy Mami has sort of swept that away with something that feels like magic.

Speaking of magic, the mangaka really does an INCREDIBLE job of drawing Mami's character so beautifully! Like I felt the magic just oozed off the page and wrapped around me! I really really loved it!

Overall, this was an enjoyable read! It's very different then what I usually read, but it's a light magical girl story with a compelling main character who is doing the best she can to fight for her position (even if I don't agree with all her methods).

This review covers all 7 volumes.

The magical girl story this is based on stirs some vague recollections in my mind. I may have watched some of it when I was a very young child? The gist of the original story is a 10-year old girl who is granted a magical wand by a friendly alien that allows her to transform into a teenager, which then allows her to pursue a fragmented career in the music industry. This version is told from the point of view of the self absorbed rival that Mami displaces. I would have enjoyed this far more if I had more memories of the original anime, but Ayase Megumi is a solid character and the story told from her perspective, handling her waning fame, was richer and deeper.

I discovered the anime on Amazon prime video and fell in LOVE. WHERE WAs THis MY WHOLE LIFE?!!! (born in 1994 but still I've never seen or heard of it!) So when I saw this manga was being released I fell to pieces. I love this point of view from Megumi. This book definetly has to be read after seeing several episodes. The blank spaces on how Creamy Mami is the way she is isn't explained here. For me as someone who watched the show it was even better because it didn't have to be an exact repetition of the show. I already saw that. This is like a fresh alternative side. I love the art, love seeing what Megumi is thinking and why she reacts the way she does to Creamy Mami.

This was very good! I've never seen the classic anime, but I very much enjoyed this adaptation! The mangaka tasked with making this had a hard job in creating her own spin, but you could tell she's also a devoted fan and took care with this first volume.

What if the story focused on the antagonist of a mahou shoujo series? Interesting to read even though I haven't watched the original tv series which this is a retelling of.
