Une histoire culturelle

Domestiqué sept ou huit millénaires avant notre ère, le taureau est resté le plus sauvage des animaux domestiques. Il se dégage de lui une impression de puissance, de vitalité et de fécondité, qui en a fait un dieu pour de nombreux peuples de l’Antiquité. Le christianisme à ses débuts est parti en guerre contre les cultes qui lui étaient rendus et lui a substitué le bœuf, animal pacifique, paisible et travailleur. D’où une certaine éclipse du taureau dans la culture européenne pendant plusieurs siècles : il se limite alors à la vie des campagnes et à la fécondation des vaches. Toutefois, à partir du XVIe siècle, puis surtout du XIXe, la réapparition des jeux et spectacles tauromachiques le remettent sur le devant de la scène et suscitent des polémiques qui se sont accentuées au cours des dernières décennies.

About the author

Pastoureau was born in Paris on 17 June 1947. He studied at the École Nationale des Chartes, a college for prospective archivists and librarians. After writing his 1972 thesis about heraldic bestiaries in the Middle Ages, he worked in the coins, medals and antiquities department of the French National Library until 1982.
Since 1983 he has held the Chair of History of Western Symbolism (Chaire d'histoire de la symbolique occidentale) and is a director of studies at the Sorbonne's École pratique des hautes études. He is an academician of the Académie internationale d'héraldique (International Academy of Heraldry) and vice-president of the Société française d'héraldique (French Heraldry Society). When he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lausanne in 1996, he was described as an eminent scholar who has made a radical contribution to several disciplines.
Professor Pastoureau has published widely, including work on the history of colours, animals, symbols, and the Knights of the Round Table. He has also written on emblems and heraldry, as well as sigillography and numismatics.

В раннем христианстве Сатана ассоциировался не с козлом, а именно с быком.

Это вторая книга у этого автора, которую я прослушала, потому что первая, про волков, показалась мне довольно интересной. Они похожи — довольно сжато, набегами на разные времена и эпохи, много обобщенной информации и отдельные кусочки из мифов. Конечно, цельным исследованием образа быка в культуре это назвать сложно. Но такие книги нужны, чтобы замотивировать читать на данную тему больше.

Единственное, что мне совсем не понравилось, — это упоминание в последней главе корриды, которой автор вроде как не может дать точную оценку и склоняется к тому, что запрещать ее не стоит. Рассматривается это все с абсурдистской точки зрения: не будет корриды — не будут выводить определенных быков (как будто самим быкам от этого станет хуже).
