Found this after watching the 2017 Daniel Radcliffe film “Jungle” about Yossi Ghinsberg, a young Israeli who got himself lost in the Bolivian jungle (and is one of the people discussed in this book).

Some of the stories here are famous ones – Ernest Shackleton, Hugh Glass (aka Leo DiCaprio in “The Revenant”), Aron Ralston (aka James Franco in “127 Hours”), etc. But the more interesting tales were ones I’d never heard before.

Two common threads wove themselves through many of these stories: 1) how long some of these things lasted, (the guys who were trapped in a dark underground mine for two weeks, the sailor lost at sea for 4-1/2 months, James Franco’s 127 hour ordeal; etc); and 2) how many of these knuckleheads went through hell and/or lost multiple limbs, but then after their recovery went right back to the activity that nearly killed them.

As I was reading, I found myself automatically separating everyone into one of three groups: the professionals (scientists and explorers, miners, people working on ships/submarines), the innocents (those people who got caught when Mount St. Helens exploded or who fell out of exploding airplanes), and the idiots (the morons who thought it was a good idea to run an ultramarathon in the Sahara desert, ANY mountain climber, the James Franco and Daniel Radcliffe guys, etc). But then I remembered that like many people, I'd had more than my share of adventures back in the day that could have “ended poorly” – scuba diving at night, motorcycling throughout Southeast Asia, etc. - but had just been consistently...I dunno; lucky? Blessed? Because it certainly wasn't "well-prepared."

One memorable example: back in the early ‘90s, me and a local trekked to the Langtang glacier on the Nepal/Tibet border. While our own hike was uneventful, I remember running into another guide going down the other way with a young European girl on his back. He matter-of-factly told us that had been carrying her since she broke her leg 3-4 days earlier, and “only” had 3-4 days more before he reached a road and could hopefully get her some help. I also remember that one wall of the office where I had earlier gotten my trekking permit was covered with WANTED-type “HAVE YOU SEEN THIS PERSON?” posters for all the trekkers who had gone up into the mountains but never come back down. So, y'know, there but for the grace of God (or a ridiculously responsible - and hopefully very well-tipped - Sherpa)...

Anyway, good book for a young audience, although like all such efforts it got a little repetitious by the end, so probably best to read in chunks rather than straight through.

I am a sucker for survival stories so when I saw this I knew I had to have it. Turns out it was a children's book but I enjoyed reading it anyway. It's amazing to see how all these people survived the situations that they encountered.

I'll mention the first story about Juliane Koepcke because I've been fascinated with her story since I was a child. There used to be a movie that would come on about once a year and I would watch it every time. There's a scene where she has to squeeze maggots out of her body and I think I was in shock everytime I saw it. Perhaps it's why it has always stuck in my mind. For anyone who may not be familiar with Juliane's story, Juliane was a 17 year old girl who was flying home on Christmas Eve with her mother. They wanted to get back home to her dad in the jungles of Peru. Their plane flew into a very bad storm and the plane started going down. Juliane's seat was ripped out of the airplane and she was suddenly plummeting down into the jungle from the air while strapped into her seat.

She was the only survivor and she found herself somewhere in the Amazonian jungle. Her parents were scientists and she used some of the knowledge they had passed down to her to help her try and get out the jungle. She was lost for ten days when some forest workers found her. Her will to survive such a tragedy is admirable.

All the stories were fascinating and I would have loved more information but that's just me being greedy on detail.

"Eluga pääsenud" on kogumik uskumatutest ellujäämislugudest. Raamatu algus rabab kindlasti, kuid järjest lugemisel võib tekkida küllastumus. Soovitan raamatut neile, kellele meeldivad seiklused ja paeluvad tõsielusündmused, eriti just katastroofid. Kindlasti ei sobi raamat nõrganärvilistele!

Aitäh, Helios kirjastus, raamatu eest!

The events depicted are indeed pretty extraordinary and the illustrations are lovely, but the writing can be quite bland at times. You don't really get a sense of adventure/imminent danger, because of the dry storytelling. I understand that the author wanted to be as little biased as possible, but sometimes it wouldn't have hurt to tighten the grip on the story. Or was it the translation's fault? Anyway, I recommend this to anyone interested in extreme survival and to all of you out there who grew up with adventure books.

My class (year 4) loved this book. The book is a collection of true stories about how people have survived against the odds after things have gone wrong. There was a nice of stories about adults, children, men and woman. It lead to interesting discussions about how far would we go to survive? Would we drink sharks blood, chip off our arm or operate on ourselves? The illustrations added to the stories and helped the children better understand what was happening.

I received this ARC via LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program.

David Long has collected 23 amazing stories of human survival in overwhelmingly desperate, hopeless conditions. Whether trapped in a sunken submarine, blasted by Mount St. Helens, trapped or lost in the desert, stuck in quicksand or dangling precariously from a mountainside, these courageous men and women demonstrate incredible perseverance and will to live. Each thrilling tale is just 6-10 pages long, so reading can be broken down into many small easily digestible portions.

Since its target audience is children, I intended initially to share this inspiring book with my 7-year-old. However, after we read the first two stories together I started to feel doubtful that some of these potentially frightening situations were appropriate for bedtime. The narratives are not unnecessarily graphic, but neither are uncomfortable details glossed over. Parents should be aware of and prepared to discuss topics such as witnessing friends/family dying, killing/eating dogs for survival, attempted suicide, plane crashes, hypothermia and starvation. I opted to complete the rest of the book on my own and, while I found these personal stories uplifting, I plan to wait another year or two to share with my daughter.

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for wilderness survival stories; I remember from a young age wanting to be some combination of Sam Gribely and Billy Coleman. And I know I would have loved a book like Survivors. This is an anthology of true stories of remarkable and impossible survival in the most dangerous wilderness conditions. A helicopter crash in a volcano. A plane crash in the Peruvian jungle. Actually freezing “to death” in Norway. Getting lost in the Sahara. And living off of fish, seagulls, and sharks for four months on the Atlantic Ocean. And they all survived.
The only problem with this book is that it fails to cite its sources. I have no idea where the author got his facts, and that is really disappointing. I will have to research some of these stories before I feel like I can recommend this book in good conscious.
Each story has a one or two-page illustrated spread, making it a gorgeous book to look at.
Recommended for: middle grade, teen
Red Flags: Some thoughts of suicide, deaths of friends and other people
Overall Rating: 2/5. If only there were citations!

This came through bookdrop one day at the library I work at and I was like, "Hey, looks like those informative books I loved as a kid" and I knew it would be a quick read so I checked it out. I'm glad I did!

Some of these stories were familiar to me and some were utterly new and astounding. Some I'd heard the names but never the story. They were all astounding and I've already passed many of them on.

Some of the standouts (look these people up!)

Ernest Shackleton (took a crew to Antartica, was stranded for almost a year. All survived.)
Hugh Glass (mauled by a bear and left for dead, showed up two months later crawling out of the woods)
Julianne Koepcke (literally fell from the sky during a plane crash and survived in the Amazon for nine days)
Anna Bagenholm (was trapped in freezing water and had no pulse for around an hour)
Mauro Prosperi (lost in the Sahara for over a week during a marathon)
Leonid Rogozov (performed an appendectomy on himself while stationed in Antarctica)

I could go on. All of these men and women were incredibly inspiring and their stories are fascinating.

From plane crashes to solitary canyon hikes to scientific expeditions to desert ultramarathons, this book contains an amazing array of brutal and amazing survival stories. The author collected over 20 stories that take place in many places around the world, from various time periods, and with a variety of challenges faced by the survivors.

Each story is told matter-of-factly, including the occasional grisly detail. The large format of the book itself and the hand-drawn pictures add to the drama.

I found this book thoroughly fascinating--I love survival stories for the way they focus in on the concrete details of life (food, water, physical ability) and how the survivors use their ingenuity and incredible perseverance to make it--totally inspiring to me.

It could be a good family read-aloud since it could appeal to the whole family, although I personally hesitate to recommend bedtime due to the the subject matter!

Readers who like true stories, short stories, and grisly stories will particularly enjoy this one!

(I got this book free from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers.)

This is the kind of book that's really suitable for all ages, from the 9-to-12 set on up to adulthood. The stories -- which were from all over the world and ranged from spending four months adrift on a raft in the Pacific, to surviving a plane crash in the Amazonian jungle, to a massive coordinated effort to rescue a man with a severe head injury from the depths of a cave, to getting lost alone in the Sahara Desert -- are all very interesting. They're also short, generally around four pages each, and would make for good bedside or bathroom reading. Each tale explains how the person got in trouble, how they got out of it, and how the event impacted their later life.

I would highly recommend this book for middle and high school libraries.

This is brilliant. Primarily aimed at children - about 10+ I guess, but a fascinating and gripping read as an adult too. The format and layout also make it easy to read and to dip in and out of. It consists of at least 20 true short stories about individuals who find themselves in hostile environments in very dangerous situations, often injured but finding the courage and resolve to battle on, keep going and find away out. Some seems are a little gruesome but described in a simple, dignified way. Each story is only a few pages long - hence easy to dip in and out of - and there are lovely simple painted illustrations, some double page spread. I would recommend this to everyone - any age.

This collection of survival stories is definitely riveting, and the individual chapters read pretty quickly. I've enjoyed using the chapter on Aron Ralston with 7th grade to make note-taking practice more interesting, and I'm glad to have finally read the whole book. I now want to booktalk it more with kids doing book selection.

This is not a criticism of the author, but one of the thoughts that regularly comes to me as I read these, though, is "Why did they take THAT risk?" Once someone is in life-threatening danger, you tend to root for them, but it does make you wonder why they choose the risks they take.

this contained some absolutely extraordinary stories of endurance. must admit that I didn't find the details about animal death that lovely - I understand it's what they had to do to survive but idk, like don't give me details??? also, sometimes I just thought wtf are these people doing, they put themselves in danger and then it's omg my friend is dead and I'm dying like what did you expect when you, for example, climb up a mountain that nobody has ever survived????? other than these details, I've loved sharing these incredible feats of survival with those around me - it's pretty cool.

A fascinating collection of real life extraordinary survival stories from across the world. Some of the tales are familiar, like the ones about Aron Ralston and Hugh Glass, whose dangerous adventures have been made into movies. Others are less known, but just as riveting. For survival enthusiasts, especially younger audiences, but for anyone who reads inspiration non-fiction. Beautiful artwork too.

Beautifully designed collection of true survival short stories covering adventures and mishaps from 1912 (Mawson in Antarctica) to 2014 (spelunker trapped in a cave in Germany). There is a wide variety of settings and a mix of natural disasters and human errors, explorers, adventurers and people just caught in the wrong place and time. Four of the 23 stories feature women.

No table of contents or index to go back and find a particular story again without flipping.

Survivors is my SBT1 class text for the term so it has been really interesting to see how the teacher has used it and the children’s responses to it. Each chapter focuses on a different real life story that demonstrates a person (or people) surviving against all odds. Personally, I really enjoyed reading it and I know the children have liked the narrative style. Some chapters might need to be read to a class with caution depending on the children in the group.

A collection of very interesting and gripping stories. Some, it really boggles the mind that they happened. I read this to my boys aged 8 and 10 and they loved it, although there definitely are sections that are pretty gruesome. Like what happens when you eat dog liver and why you may want to reconsider doing it. I also learned that pouring gas on one's limbs might be a good way to get the larvae out. Eek.

Quite often I find myself really struggling to engage with non-fiction books, but this was not the case for this epic collection of real-life survival stories. Each brush with death is thrillingly retold, and I was repeatedly astonished by the determination demonstrated by these courageous people. Very inspirational tales that would be extremely exciting for children and adults to retell.
