Coming Home: A Quick & Practical Guide for Preparing a Mother's Heart, Mind, & Home for Homeschooling

Rate this book
Choosing to homeschool is a tough decision. Not knowing where to start makes it even tougher. You can research on the internet, read books, and ask random homeschoolers online where to begin, but very few will give you the actual first steps of homeschooling. Spoiler alert — it has nothing to do with curriculum, schedules, or even your children.

Coming Home focuses on you, the new homeschool mom, by helping you to prepare your heart, mind, and home for homeschooling. You’ll learn both the personal and practical steps to begin homeschooling the right way, your way, from the start.

This was a breath of fresh air. I liked how Camille focused on the parent, and our motivations for homeschooling and what we hoped to do with our children, and most importantly, self-care. Real self-care. I wish I had read this in March/April 2020, but I’m glad I read it now.

When we started homeschooling, some of my first questions to veteran homeschoolers were:

• What curriculum do you use?
• What does your schedule look like?
• What about socialization?
• What methodology do you follow?
• How do you school with multiple kids, especially with youngins underfoot?
• How do you meet state requirements?

These questions are pretty common among those just starting out. They are good, worthwhile questions to consider, but in truth, these questions get answered through trial and error. You learn it by doing it!

(And, no, you don't need to be a trained teacher to homeschool.)

Three years in I now realize it's the practical stuff (e.g., household management) and inner self-work that make a difference when it comes to home education.

Camille Kirksey offers this tiny but mighty guide on preparing your heart, mind, and home for the work of home education. Author of The Intuitive Homeschooler blog and a series of homeschool masterclasses, Camille is a veteran secular homeschooler of three.

Homeschooling is not about replicating school at home. It's about your vision of education, your 'why' for homeschooling. It's often tied to your own personal experience of education, and your vision and 'why' can evolve.

You are also not your child's teacher, which Camille explains in depth. This is a common misconception with home education. You are really just a guide or facilitator, learning alongside your kid, helping them think through the subject at hand and finding resources to learn more.

It's all very organic, in truth.

You might hear me say that homeschooling and traditional schooling are not the same thing. That's not a value judgment. (I'm a big fan of our local schools and educators!)

That's an observation from someone who knows there are different learning modalities. Home education is simply a different paradigm.

This book is a great starting point. Sure, you want to research curricula and methodologies. But preparing your heart, your mindset, and your home are, in my opinion, just as (if not more) important.

Go check out Camille's work! Her sound advice is worth following and considering. 🌱

Camille says all the things the overwhelmed, new, homeschooling parent needs to hear. I have attempted to read so many homeschool prep books and have finished reading them only to feel defeated and overwhelmed. I love that it was a quick read, it didn’t feel like it was another item on my to-do list. Not every homeschool parent is motivated to homeschool by faith and she leaves room for people to come with their own goals and expectations. There is no right way to do this and I love that she has decided to support parents and families in many different walks of life.

I wrote a longer review on homeedvoices.co.uk. This is a fantastic book regardless of whether you are a new homeschooler/home educator or have been homeschooling for years. It is a book about educating in a sustainable way, and building in the structure you need to keep yourself and your home running smoothly so you have the time, space and energy to have learning adventures. It is like a conversatiob with a wise and caring friend. I really love this book and know I will revisit it regularly.

I hate giving bad reviews and I really enjoy this author on Instagram and was hoping her book would be encouraging and have some insight and advice but this was just not a good or helpful book FOR ME at all.
It’s only 50 pages and self published so that probably has a lot to do with it, but overall this could have been a blog series. And the last section on housekeeping was definitely not sensitive to anyone dealing with mental health struggles or neurodivergence of any kind.
