Okay, I'm a late bloomer who's a big DC comics fan and spent my childhood summers on the Jersey shore but I was born under a wandering star and have lived in different parts of America ever since. That's enough about me. Need to feel inspired today? Looking for something to make you root for an ordinary hero? I'm all about that in everything I write.

I love a good tale that makes me wonder about things and I love a story even more that leaves me feeling inspired or like I'm capable of doing more than I realized. That's my goal with everything I've ever written. Some of the stories I tell involve twisting, turning thrillers and others have a lot of magic.

There's something to be said for getting lost in another world and coming out the other side feeling a little better about yourself or the possibilities in front of you. That's basically the best part of life in a nutshell, no matter what kind of story I'm setting out to tell.

Thank you for checking out my stories!

Great new fantasy series!

Go Dwarf Yourself by Martha Carr and Michael Anderson is a very fun read! Not only does it have plenty of humor, action, Terrific characters, great plot, multiple creatures, magic, and talking coon hounds! The main character is a dwarf and he made collars for his black and tan coonhounds that made it so him and his dogs can understand each other! These dogs steal the spotlight! They are hilarious throughout the book!I certainly recommend this book for a fresh fantasy, a easy read, and something funny all in one book!

🙄 Serves Us Right for Reading a Book with a Title Such a This One Buddy Read (SURfRaBwaTSaTOBT™) with the MacHalos and stuff 🙄

💀 DNF at 51%.

I’ve had it with reading crap Slightly Subpar Books (SSB™) and then having to review said crap Slightly Subpar Books (SSB™), so the crap I shall significantly cut here. (Note to self: good luck with that.)

Why this delightful little story is most unfortunately not shortlisted for the 2021 Nobel Prize of Literature:

Zero World building.
And when I say zero world-building, I mean ZERO WORLD BUILDING. Oh, the authors—because yes, it actually took two grown-up human beings to write this masterpiece—sure gave their all when it comes to supernatural creatures here: we’ve got half-wizards, dwarves (duh), shapeshifters (wow), half-elves, gnomes, half-kilomeas and even whole-dogs! (Don’t ask me what the weird “half” obsession is about, I’ve no bloody shrimping idea.) But apart from that? We have a big fat nothing. Just (vaguely) supernatural bounty hunters doing their (vaguely) supernatural bounty hunting thing in a mundane as fish urban setting. Such original creativity, much wow.

My thoughts exactly.

The most decaf, diet, and gluten-free cast of characters ever.
You know the dogs I mentioned in the previous paragraph? They’re the most interesting characters in the book. By far. And all they talk about—yes, they actually talk. Don’t ask—is food and their, um, digestive issues. Need I ask you what you think this says about the rest of the wonderful cast? Didn’t think so. Moving on and stuff.

Filling Fillers R Us.
Why this book isn’t featured in the Guinness Book of World Records is and forever shall be one of the greatest mysteries of the universe. It’s entirely made of chapters that are filled with filling fillers! Surely this is some kind of record! I mean, there’s a whole chapter about the leads leisurely strolling in Central Park (it adds so much to the plot!). And another chapter about them going to a pizza joint to (I kid you not). Then they come across a whole bunch of kids who are on their way to a birthday party, and let them pet the above-mentioned dogs. Talk about things escalating quickly! The dramatic tension got pretty unbearable for me at that point, I must admit.

Pretty much, yeah.

I barely made it out of this last scene alive, to be honest. My heart might be black and withered but it still beats occasionally, and all this stress and pressure are not good for my nefarious ticker. So after consulting with the family physician, Dr. Prawn, it was decided I should DNF this wonderfully written tale posthaste. The end and stuff.

Nefarious Last Words (NLW™): hey, at least it was free.

P.S. And the dwarf isn’t even sexy as fish. What a complete rip-off.

[Pre-review nonsense]

Three 2-star ratings (including two DNFs 🙄) in a row. I must have been particularly nefarious in one of my past lives to deserve this.

Right. That helps a lot. Thanks so much. Hey, are you one of the bad guys from Burning Water? Oh wait, you can't be, you're an Olmec dude, not an Aztec one. Oh well.

Review to come and stuff.

"Maybe I need a fork.”
He chuckled. “And you’ve never eaten New York pizza.”
“It would seem not.” Folding his slice in half, Johnny held the fold with both hands and took a massive bite. “It keeps all the good stuff right where you want it.”
“Fold the pizza.” Lisa laughed with embarrassment. “So simple.”
“See? Now you’re gettin’ it. Keep it simple.” He took another massive bite and wiped the grease from his beard and mustache with an already crumpled napkin. “If I missed anything about New York, it’s this.” “Johnny, if I’d ever been to New York,” Luther muttered through the snuffling of his perfectly content pizza-eating, “I’d miss this too.”
“I already miss it,” Rex added.
Lisa took his advice and folded her slice in half for another bite. “Yeah, it’s good. I’m still not sure if it’s worth waiting in line that long, though.”
He lowered his pizza and scowled at her. “That’s crossing a line.”
She laughed. “Sore point. I get it. My bad.”
“Uh-huh.”"

Johnny is Johnny Walker (yeah!?) the dwarf bounty hire of the subtitle.
Rex and Luther are his coon dogs that he has invented a means of talking with.
Lisa is the FBI liaison who has dragged Johnny to NYC to hunt down a sex-trade kidnapper.
Magic abounds in this world and both Lisa and Johnny are able to handle it.

The pizza was pepperoni and pineapple…how many New Yorkers would put that at the top of their list? Johnny only drinks Johnny Walker Black Label. Wow! The above banal conversation is unfortunately fairly typical of this novel. I found the humor sophomoric and unable to make me laugh.

Why don’t I like this when I am a fan of the Chet and Bernie mysteries? https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Maybe it’s because Spencer Quinn is a far better writer. Here, the plot is adequate but hardly original. The thrills are un-engaging. I won’t be begging for more.

This is the first book I have read by Carr and Anderle, and I was surprised that it wasn't better. Disappointed.

It was ok, but I really did not get attached to the main characters. Johnny seemed too good to be true, and I was put off by his demeanor. I think he might be what people around here call a "Mary Sue." He seemed to be able to do anything, and when in a tight situation, would pull out some amazing solution. The female lead I disliked right away because, at the very beginning, she helped bully Johnny into taking the job. And she just seemed, I don't know, meh. So not attached to her, either.

I really loved the dogs, though.

I was skipping paragraphs during the fights. The writing style was ok, but it just didn't pick me up and transport me. I was tired of it at 57%, and I was going to quit, but then I found out that my reading group was actually reading it a month later than I thought. So I was able to pick it up and finish it with the group.

I will probably continue the series because I love the dogs, and I am curious to know what will happen next. Not a great series, so far, however.

MacHalo Buddy Read because it was free and I've gone dwarf cray-cray.

I got to wave my dwarf freak flag and had followers basking in my manic behavior expecting something wonderful ... or perhaps something bad.

Party Dwarf GIFs | Tenor We got bad!

It wasn't even bad/funny. It was bad/suckie bad. When I first saw Michael Anderle's name on here as co-author I figured it couldn't be all that bad, then I sat and had deep thoughts and tried to remember if I read anything good from Michael Anderle in the first place.

Cat No GIF

Here I remain with my dwarf itch. If anyone knows of a book with a dwarf in it, hit me up! Otherwise, I'll be reading Dragons of Autumn Twilight in September. Hopefully this one will fill that hole in my heart.

Great cover, fun title and that was about it. I was so looking forward to reading this book. Sadly, it really missed its mark.

The story is about a bounty hunting dwarf named Johnny Walker who has retired from his profession to a life with his dogs and his swamp. All that is disrupted when Feds stop by looking for him to take on a job. Johnny wouldn’t have a hard time saying no if there wasn’t a little girl involved. He takes the job and sets out with Agent Lisa Breyer who is a Light Elf. Together they head to New York City with the dogs tagging along. The clues start adding up to more than they expected.

The premise sounded great but it really fell flat for me. The humor seemed like it tried way too hard. The characters were mostly forgettable except for Johnny. He was just irritating. The only ones I liked were the dogs and sometimes they were a bit much. The story was kind of lackluster and the dialogue bordered on juvenile.

Although there is a chance that is could get better, I won’t continue with the series.

TITLE: Go Dwarf yourself

AUTHOR(s): Martha Carr & Michael Anderle

GENRE: Urban Fantasy/Comedy

PAGES: 268

FORMAT: E-book

In the fantasy world, some of my favorite characters are dwarves. I know, my friends find this amusing due to the fact that I am 6’5″ tall, and when we play fantasy games I usually play a dwarf. Go figure.

I came across the book Go Dwarf Yourself at the end of October. When I started reading it, I was taken right into the story: A dwarf, Johnny Walker, living in the Florida Everglades with two coon hounds invents a way to understand what they are saying to him, then the FBI shows up with a missing child case to entice him back to his bounty hunting job for the feds. He begrudgingly takes the job and gets a light elf partner (but do not use that word around him). The job takes him, his partner and two dogs to New York City, where all roads lead to the “Monsters Ball”, where once a year abducted girls are sold to the highest bidder for less than dubious reasons. The girl they are looking for is on the auction block. Time is ticking and the time to act is now!

The pro’s of this book is it is heavy on action. There is a wonderful mix of guns, magic and James Bond-esque gadgets. A back story develops for the hero that drives the book forward, and helps develop his character.

The con’s of this book: First of all, Johnny Walker is too good to be true. Everything he does is right and he knows it all. In the Everglades he knows it all. In New York City he knows it all, and through it all he has a “My way or the highway” attitude that becomes tedious. The overall voice of the book becomes broken from chapter to chapter. In one chapter, it feels like a well rounded adult wrote it, the next chapter can feel like a teenager was let loose with the F-bomb license and ends up sounding like a sailor with a wicked case of Tourette’s Syndrome. AND, the dogs being able to communicate with him becomes over done.

In the end the cons far outweigh the pros for me.

I give this 3 out of 5 bookmarks.

I have to be honest. This isn't normally a book I'd pick out to read on my own. But I'm definiteyl glad I did.

There's a great mix of humor and action in this book.
The author did a great job with the world building here. I loved getting to know the characters as well. Some of the characters were magical and quite funny.

Being that the book is on the shorter side, just under 300 pages, it was easy to get through. There were some slow moments, sure, but not many. The author did a great job at keeping the storyline moving.

I'll definitely check out other books by the author.

Luther and Rex are the dogs that speak with Johnny Walker the Dwarf Bounty Hunter.

So I listen to this for a bit but could not get into the narrator. I will try reading it sometime soon but it is a DNF for now for the narration.

The start of another great series

There are books you read were you pick it up and you are instantly transported to a familiar room with good friends. This is one of those books. I am just enthralled with the writing and storytelling of Martha and Michael. There are authors I look forward to, Craig Johnson, C J Box, Lee Child, and others. Martha and Michael fall in with this group. I will read everything they write and enjoy every minute of it.

Unfortunately I really didn’t like this book much. It felt pretty much as a rehash of Brownstone but not as cool. Although Johnny is a quite likeable chap he dwarfs Brownstone (pun intended) when it comes to the brutal kickass attitude.

His unwanted companion Lisa also doesn’t compare well to Brownstone’s one even though she also is rather likable.

Perhaps it’s not fair to compare with the Brownstone series. After all, it’s pretty large shoes to fill. But then, why make a new series that’s more or less just an iteration of the same basic story?

Unfortunately this book has another issue. Well maybe it’s just an issue for me but anyway. Johnnny has two dogs and the three of them can talk to each other. Well, Johnny can hear the thoughts of his dogs.

The problem is that these dogs is chattering constantly and their chatter is, well, a dog’s chatter. It’s just annoying and there’s so much of it. It’s really overwhelming the rest of the dialog and action.

After the first few chapters I was just frustrated every time the dogs piped up that maybe I didn’t give the rest of the book and the story the attention it deserved but that’s the way this book turned out for me.

If you like the plum lucky series, then you have a rough idea what this one is like. It's a bit of Stephanie plum, a bit of supernatural, and a whole lot of attitude. It's also a very fun read, so if you like your fantasy to have some magic, some shape shifting, some detective work, and a bit of snarky sidekick, then you've found a series that just might suit your tastes.

Johnny Walker is the best bounty-hunter around. He's also a dwarf, not a human 'little person', an actual dwarf. He retired to a log cabin when his 15 year old daughter was kidnapped and killed. Then the US government asks him to come out of retirement. A family has been killed and their 15 year old daughter kidnapped. She's a shape shifter and she's going to be sold to the highest bidder. She's the same age his daughter was. In the course of the investigation, he discovers her kidnappers are the same people who kidnapped his own daughter. Now it's personal!

First, my review: “This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”

Second, I am not a bot...at least I don’t think I am. Yes this is copy pasta (just learned that term, so fun!) simply because I feel like any book I read deserves acknowledgement but at the same time my feelings on reviews conflict with the normal review process.

I enjoyed this book, so my goal is to promote it and help the author. If you are a potential reader, just stop reading now and take the above as all you need to know. I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. It is my opinion that Art needs to be experienced at an individual level. You are the only one that can determine what you like and don’t like. Don’t let others make that decision for you. You should definitely read the book and completely ignore all of the reviews. Or not if you don’t think this book is for you. That choice is all yours and the beauty of art appreciation. You are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.

If you are a member of the IAK Guild (thanks, Jason) or part of the review police, feel free to criticize me and challenge my philosophy on reviewing art. I think we all love a good debate. The forums are open and I welcome your comments. I was wrong in my previous request to get you to stop. Your blatant disregard for that request has led to some fun discussions. Growth is important for us all.

Cheers

Nice start to a new series, making me figure out what universe this belongs in

Part of the joy in reading these series, and authors that partner with MA, are the author notes. Yes, every now and again i would say you laid an egg for me, whether it be a part of the book, the entire book, or the series, but time and again you are successful in engaging me to join you in your world. You help me to find the "better nature" we believe everyone has (despite knowing devil children, or truly horrible people) to believe this world of ours, with all its' problems and inequities, is still worth saving, with striving to better, each in his or her own way. And to engage us thru fiction, in such a way that we may not even realise you are using a club on our noggins is the height of good writing. I don't care what genre this is, just that it tells a good story, that there is snark and surprises, that you can walk away at the end knowing that small acts, generally of kindness, can have tremendous consequences or influence downstream.
Not sure how much I liked this book in the beginning, but tough it out, because they do get it going, and you leave it feeling that although not all is right with the world, but there is hope , joy, and hopefully justice if not right, in your fictional world. If only it could.be so.in our 2021 reality.

I love Johnny Walker!

The Dwarf, not the drink! Lol

It's always Jim Beam, or Jack Daniels, if a drink.

But, I digress.

From the first moment of reading this book, I was sucked in, and didn't want to stop reading.

Johnny is definitely a Dwarf who has seen hard times, and is obsessed, quite rightly, I believe, in finding his daughter's killer!

That he might be able to help another young girl, at the same time, he does without hesitation and, in that help, he gains far more than he expected.

I absolutely love the relationship that he's developing with the half-Elf, Agent Lisa Breyer, and look forward to seeing how it develops but, most of all, I absolutely fell in love with Luther and Rex, Johnny's Coonhounds!

I laughed my way throughout the book, reading about their antics, and immediately wanted the gadget that Johnny invented, in order to hear, and understand, his dogs' speech - hilarious, or what? Lol

I really, really, hope that the second book of this series: 'Don't Give A Dwarf', is as full of fun, and emotional warmth, as this first book is and, once I've read it, I'll catch you on the flip side, to let you know what I thought about it!

Full disclosure i did not finish this book, stopped reading after a few chapters in.

Not my cup of Dwarf.....i liked the idea, still do...

For me i think it tried to hard to be to many things, funny..had moments, tough guy florida swamp-living dwarf, yes, tough beautiful female character, yes..both intelligent and competent, yes...techno-magic, yes...two bloodhounds, yes..can communicate to previously mentioned techno-magic using dwarf, yes.....to many 'yeses' in this review. Yes....

My poorly made point is that for me it was a lot very quickly. The two dogs get the magic collars first few pages and start stealing the show, or actually just get in the way with their antics i feel....the tough dwarf is to much to soon to, without any background to get to know or like the character....

It is not poorly written, just not written formy tastes, so if you like the idea like i did and can try it do so....
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

So many bad reviews for this book!

Luckily, I didn't read them before finishing.
Yes, I get where they're coming from. It's a different writing style, that's for sure, and it's hard to get into the story.

On the other hand, exactly because of the atypical angle, I can't help but be intrigues and try the next book.

The MC is gruff, unpolite, and well, not so likable a lot of times. But he grows on you, know what I mean?
I enjoyed this story, and I think it deserves a chance. Not sure what'll happen after book 2, but for now, it's worth a shot.

I'd recommend it for: people looking for a High Fantasy writing style in an UF environment, with a very different writing style and an atypical MC. Definitely for someone who's looking for a change in scenary and curious about something new, but who doesn't wanna leave the HF/UF scene.

Maybe it is a good idea. Fun. Entertaining. But way too much dialogue. And we do get it. That dog IS stupid. But if you had ever shown a PERSON being that stupid, someone would have cancelled you.

And this idea, "the main characters are the only ones with the pronouns "he" and "she" or whatever they have going... This is why most writers us
e editors! (Paraphrasing, but "Bad guy enters the room. He hits him in the head" actually means "the main character hits the bad guy in the head")
And yes, too much dialogue. Not quite as fun and snappy as the authors think.
And of course, to build a series, the main characters need secrets. Secrets that we, the reader, know about, but heaven forbid they should talk about it with EACHOTHER for the first 5-6 books... The excitement, "Will my partner figure it out this time..." is killing me. Not.

Same old trope from books and TV

The trope of the cop/detective/special agent has a cold case they couldn't solve, it was personal, and the reason they quit their job. Now they are being asked to return to work on a case that is similar to the albatross hanging on their neck. I have seen TV shows and read books like this that were better or worse than this story. It is in the middle of the pack. The authors beat me over the head with the reminder that the main character, Johnny Walker, was a dwarf. I was unable to connect with him nor suspend my disbelief enough to empathize with him. I would not recommend this book and series to anyone.

Johnny Walker

This KU library selection is the opener for the Dwarf Bounty Hunter series. Johnny Walker lives in the Everglades, retired from bounty hunting for fifteen years, when the FBI once again comes callling. A twelve year old girl has been taken, her family killed, and the bureau needs a skilled bounty hunter to get her back. Johnny relents, but with conditions. What he doesn't expect, however, is a clue to the identity of the monster who forced him in to retirement all those years ago.
The book was slow in starting up, but finally gathered steam about halfway through. I'm now looking forward to book two.

Loud, rambunctious, and funny, the dwarf takes no prisoners.

When a retired bounty hunter level six gets visited by his old handler, he knows there is a major pile of carp to wade through coming up. But when it involves a murdered family and a kidnapped girl the same age his daughter was when she was killed? And the girl is a paranormal like him? Look out, the dwarf's coming out of retirement, and little pieces of bad guys are gonna fall everywhere, even if he is stuck with a "partner ", a half Light Elf from the Fed's bounty hunter division, he's gonna kick some crooks butts, and rescue the girl.

A new friend of the family

It sounds strange to say it, but that’s exactly what I find when I read this book. Reading a collaboration from Michael and Martha is like sitting down with old friends and having them telling a story. I don’t know if I have read every book that they have produced, but I read a bunch of them, and have thoroughly enjoyed every one. Now Johnny has been introduced to the world, and I eagerly await the next book. I don’t know if the people are going to be family, but the puppies are already there. A great read.

I'm finally catching up! Go me, yeah and having great books to read helps!

I got the first chapter of this book a few months back and bought the book. I had just lost my left eye and it was hard to read. I'm much better now and can now read without the brain pain. Nuff said. I love this new series, its fast and fun. The build up was great and the back story interesting! Now I get to do my favorite thing with any new book, I already have the next on in my hands and will start it now! Great start to a new series! Onward to the next book. Thanks for the fun!

Who knew the FBI had a magical division?!

Like looking for ETs and ufos, we are dragging kicking and laughing in a magical pursuit for the baddies of the underworld. The other world of magic. A dwarf bounty hunter and his cohorts, a pair of comical but tough, coonhounds, and an FBI elf agent lady, seek an orphaned girl held for auction on the black market in NYC. Wild action, crazy humor and wit, and fun to read. James Patterson detectives meet Terry Prachett's magical beings with drama, slick crime and humor. Fun!

Extraordinary!

I highly recommend this imaginative book, the series in which it is and the spinoffs thereof, to all readers what love reading paranormal fantasy. These books lift us out of the mundane world into adventurous situations and amazing relationships.
I don't think I realized just how important just being able to hug a friend was until the quarantine and social distances stopped us from even visiting them. These books create book Friends, and remind us this too will end.
God bless the writers , may they always be able to brighten our world.
