Kali Brixton is the alter ego of a mild-mannered English teacher who adores the written word and a good ol'-fashioned love story (or song). Cinderella will forever be her bread, butter, and jelly, and glitter runs in her veins.

She believes in the healing power of hugs, humor, and HEAs. All things sparkly, cheesy, and Wizard of Oz-zy are guaranteed attention-grabbers.

Although rooted deep within the Appalachian Mountains, she has a heart full of wanderlust. Kali dreams of one day becoming a full-time author and traveling to faraway lands. Until then, she will continue to teach high school students the indisputable importance of Poe and puns.

Kali resides with her own Prince Charming/partner-in-crime/husband of more than a decade and the dreams that are now too big to stay within her wild imagination.

I just finished reading this book and all I can say is WOW!

I have so many questions that I don’t even know where to start!

“Rise” is the prequel novella to Kali Brixton, Shanna Swenson, Nicole Rodrigues and Cara Wade’s new series Sin and Secrets.

Color me impressed and intrigued and really, really desperate to get my greedy little book loving hands on each girl’s story.

“Rise” introduces us to four friends: Everleigh, Eden, Magnolia and Addison. Four unique young women with different life experiences. They are strong, determined and unique. Not only does it provide us with the backstory to each girl’s life, it also gives us pivotal information about the who, what, where and why, of what’s to come.

Well done ladies, you’ve wet my appetite and have me waiting (im)patiently for Book 1 and each subsequent book after that.

TBR “Rise” and be sure to check out the four other books in the series. Enjoy!

This prequel novella is a glimpse into the sordid pasts of the characters in the upcoming Sin & Secrets collection- Eden, Everleigh, Magnolia, and Addison. Four friends who find themselves sucked into an abysmal pit of sins and secrets as they fight for survival and transform into sisters of the same fate.

This introductory look will enthrall you, shock you, have you crying, gasping, and gaping.

This story is about falls from grace, lost loves, deceit, perseverance, sisterhood, empowerment, and the inner fighter that lives in all of us. The need to RISE.

I enjoyed reading a little bit about each character, Eden, Magnolia, Everleigh and Addison. Learning about their backstory and how each is linked together I found intriguing. I can’t wait to read more about these strong women and how they overcome their adversity. The first novel can’t get here fast enough.

I can’t wait to read this series after the novella RISE introducing us to each of the core four: Magnolia, Everleigh, Eden, and Addison.

This novella hooks us into the world of these young women and the devils they toil with tantalizing readers with the stories yet to be released.

Here I am, with bated breath, waiting for each woman’s story!

First, I want to thank Cara Wade, Nicole Rodrigues, Kali Brixton, and Shanna Swenson for providing me with this book so I may provide you with this review.

I have been a fan of Cara Wade’s for a while now but in her new book she is showing her readers a brand new edgier side to her. She joins more talented authors such as Nicole Rodrigues, Kali Brixton, and Shanna Swenson in Rise. In this book you meet Eden, Magnolia, Everleigh, and Addison in this introduction prequel novella and learn about their pasts and how it will forever haunt them.

This book may not be for everyone as it does have some triggers. This book is considered Dark Romance. In a way this could also be considered a #METOO book too. There are multiple rapes, verbal abuse, forced marriage, physical abuse, etc.

Each author has their own character and will be having their own book out in the series. Each book should be read in order. Yes, I will be reading and reviewing each of them for them.

Cara did an amazing job creating the cover design for the cover. It was so perfect on so many levels for the book.

With many characters in the book my heart went out to them for shocking situations they were put in. Taboo situations that you don't read about in many books. Even though I may have not liked the situations they were in (and hated who put them in those situations) I couldn’t get enough of the storylines!

As you are introduced to each character you get to hear their story. Many times they are intertwined with another character's storyline.

The common thread in all of these characters I felt was family. Each one was in the situation they were because of their family. That and friendship and the bond that they have.

Many characters have mind blowing shocking secrets they are hiding from their friends and have been for years. However, they will all be revealed!

Each author did an incredible job bringing you into each of their storylines. Each of them is more interesting than the last. It was incredibly fast paced. They also made you feel empathy for what each girl was going through in her life.

Marco, I must say was my favorite out of all of them. He was sweet, had a heart, was the protector (in a way), and extremely good looking from the description. Plus, that sensual sex scene that was written was nice too.

Rise I think would be a great addition as a series on Netflix from just the teaser I got in the Prequel. I am looking forward to reading the girls other books in the series.

There are no words that can describe this book, I’ll use some simple ones that don’t do it justice...

Hot, steamy, sad, heartbreaking, uplifting, eye opener are just a few! This is the story of four little birds that rose to be flaming phoenix’s.

They all had horror stories, some were more explicit than you could imagine, but through it all they had each other.

Eden was in the worst shape of them all! She endured hear of physical, emotional, and verbal abuse for years before matters were taken into the hands of someone who stood by and felt they couldn’t do anything. The one the he knew he could do would alter their lives forever. She is the strongest of them all and I love her for all she endured.

Everleigh was kind, sweet, and often verbally abused by others. Once she finally took her brother down in that sparring match, nobody was a match for her. She had a fire within her that was ready to be unleashed.

Magnolia was often stomped on because of her duty and obligations to her family. She was a beautiful souls that was easily broken, molded and shaped to be the ultimate wife without her own mind. She saw that her family would never have her back, so she took that leap of faith and found a new family! Her sisters. She has a heart of gold, but she is so broken that it’s going to take time and a lot of TLC to mend that golden broken heart.

Addison. Sweet Addison was on the verge of destruction before she found the girls. She was the listening ear that Eden needed to set things in motion. While she thought she had no family, she developed a relationship with the girls and soon found herself with a family she would do anything for.

This characters were perfectly developed to create one helluva story that has them all entwined with each other. The paths they each followed brought them together and from that the will rise and soar like never before. I can’t wait for each one of their stories because I KNOW they are going to be EPIC!

This book had me up all night trying to finish because I simply could NOT put it down! It was amazing!

Whoa! Rise was not at all what I expected it to be. It was super dark, like shockingly so, but I still enjoyed it. I'm not sure why I thought it would be happier. This Novella is aptly named "Rise", as in a Phoenix rising from the ashes. The most overlooked part of the Phoenix rebirth is the death that precedes it. This story focuses on that pre-rebirth portion for all of the ladies, Eden, Magnolia, Everleigh, and Addison. I really liked that there were snippets of each girls journey in this novella. The story spans a couple of years time and gives just enough of a glimpse into each woman's individual story to leave you wanting more. There is a trigger warning at the beginning of the story, but it is vague. I will say that triggers include, but aren't limited to: rape, physical abuse and child abuse. I'm interested to see each woman's Phoenix rebirth in the stories to come!

“Rise: A Prequel Novella”—Nicole Rodrigues, Kali Brixton, Shanna Swenson, and Cara Wade [5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️] This book is a prequel novella to the new Sin and Secrets series and it provides us the background and introductions of four best friends, Eden, Magnolia, Everleigh, and Addison, and their stories of loss, heartbreak, and love. Rise sets the premise for the addictive world of sins and secrets as we will be getting four books to follow this which will take a deeper dive into each of these women’s stories. First up will be Magnolia’s story, “Delivered in Sin” which will be released in December. After reading Rise, I am definitely itching to read the rest of these stories as this just had me craving more. Rise is considered a dark romance which may contain some triggers for people, and although it is a tale of trauma, it’s all about empowerment as well. I highly suggest checking this book out when it’s released on November 13th! 👍🏼 Thank you to Nicole Rodrigues for providing me a digital ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review! 📚

WOW ・WOW ・WOW

After finishing Rise the prequel novella to Kali Brixton, Shanna Swenson, Nicole Rodrigues, and Cara Wade's new Sin and Secrets series, I'm very Emotional, I'm a tad Speechless, a whole lot Intrigued, a little Desperate, and beyond Excited for the follow up books to this Novella.

Rise introduces us to the Core Four - Everleigh, Eden, Magnolia, and Addison. The glimpse we are given into their past and present lives of the four women is at times truly heartbreaking. I cried, I gasped, I felt angry and frustrated and when the ending was near I felt relieved, inspired, and impressed by each of these women.

What a teaser Ladies to what I can already tell is going to be an amazing Must Read Series!!!
I can't wait for each book to see what Fate has in store for each of the Core Four and watch them RISE to Freedom!!

Four women. Four different stories. An unlikely bond.

Eden, Magnolia, Everleigh and Addison all come from different pasts, however, now they are intertwined in the darkness of The Devil’s Playground. They have experienced more pain, destruction and heartbreak than many people their age. However, despite everything they become best friends, they become sisters and together these fierce women can get through anything.

Rise is a great prequel novella and a great introduction to each of these amazingly strong women. It gives a background into their past, how they met, how they become friends and where their rise from the ashes begins.

I can’t wait to learn more about each of these women and see how they continue to grow and fight throughout their own stories.

RISE is definitely a dark tale not for the faint of heart. But sometimes the farther one is forced to fall, the more brilliant the recovery as one soars back to the light.

This is an interesting read also because it is essentially a set of short origin stories for some young ladies in unimaginably difficult circumstances. Eden, Everleigh, Magnolia, and Addison have some serious problems - probably Eden and Magnolia most of all. They attend an all-girl school together, but Eden makes these casual friendships more by inviting each girl into a portion of her secret life, where she's a stripper at an Atlanta Club - the Devil's Playground.

This is a tale of young women being pursued, hurt, and grossly underestimated. Also, for fans of this subgenre, mobsters also plays a role. But it's important to remember this is only a beginning, an origin for something more...

How far can someone fall before they are forced to ascend, saving themselves?

Each of these stories is a prelude to a full novel coming soon from each author w/ a shared universe. And the message is important, especially for survivors like myself. Abuse is a serious issue but it's important to remember one can fight back and find a way out, seizing life again and living it on one's own turns. I see the stories headed this way, and it makes me curious to see how it all plays out.

RISE is a tale of trauma but it's also a tale of empowerment. No matter how much one gets broken down, there's always a recovery and a way back.

‘We had no idea how intertwined our lives would become. That we would become sisters, born not of blood, but forged in fire…’ – Eden

This story is the just the prequel to what, I have a feeling, is going to be an epic 4 books in the ‘Sins & Secrets Collection’. Eden, Everleigh, Magnolia and Addison, are 4 friends who have been sucked into a world of depravity full of sins and secrets that most couldn’t imagine or fathom. They have each other, and while their pasts may be full of darkness, they will rise together.

This book left me begging for more, and I can’t wait to read the 4 books that are coming our way soon! I’m super intrigued to know what’s going to happen for these four best friends!!

The prequel definitely addresses some darker materials, to understand the background of each of the girls. So I would definitely heed any warnings that come with the prequel.
Once you get into it though, it’s a page turner; you definitely start to understand more about the girls and what has drawn them into their “cages.”
I’m definitely hooked now and can’t wait to read all of the books in this series!

Thank you Cara Wade and the other authors for the opportunity to read the prequel novella before released. I can honestly say it took me a while to read due to some of the material in the text. But I loved the strength the ladies had in the end. Can’t wait for more!
I give this 5 stars cause it made me cry a few times, angry other times, and proud as heck of the strength the women found with each other!

Intense
“Rise” is the prequel for the “Sin and Secrets” series. Rise gives us the history of Eden, Everleigh, Magnolia, and Addison. It also sets up the storyline for the rest of the series. The abuse, violence, drama, and suspense of this tale are intense and shocking. The perfect prequel for this exciting series and I highly recommend beginning with “Rise” when reading this series.

I just finished this book and I'm blown away! This is such a terrifying yet intriguing story about four friends, each have their own individual story yet they blend together perfectly.

Eden is the most broken and has suffered tremendous abuse, Everleigh is the girl next door with the perfect family, Magnolia had an unwanted arranged marriage at 16 and Addison lost her family in a fire when she was a teen.

Nicole Rodrigues, Kali Brixton, Cara Wade and Shanna Swenson did a fantastic job and I can't wait to read the entire series!!

This prequel novella is breaking my heart. Four young innocent girls destroyed by viscous men but rising from the ashes like Phoenixes.

I’m both intrigued and disgusted in many ways.

We are introduced to four different girls and their unique stories, their resilience and their love for each other. The story takes us to a point in time with hope for the future and l am eager to read the first book in this series.

OMG, I am so ready for the full novels. I am in love with Magnolia, Eden, Everleigh and Addison.

All of the girls have been through hell and are coming out of the ashes, literally. I am curious to find out if Luca and Everleigh get together. I hope that Addison, Magnolia and Eden find their soulmates after everything that they have been through.

This prequel is so worth it and makes me eager for the full books to come out.

** Warning this is dark and touches on just about all bad things. So read at your own risk. **

Oh my goodness, this is just a sample of what is to come for the Sins and Secrets series. If you like dark and with triggers then you will love this upcoming series. Eden, Lia, Everleigh and Addison will each have their own story and oh boy are they going to be good. Each story will build in this series and will have their own darkness. I am excited to see how this all plays out and see where these girls will end up. I cannot wait. Another plus is I found more authors to stalk just from this short antho. LOL

Rise has all the emotions you can imagine, hot, steamy, sad. You get hooked from the beginning once I started I could put it down. The characters show all emotions for me that hooks me in a book right away. We all have sins, secrets, we all love we all go thru heartbreak so reading about it makes you forget about your own life and dive into a story that you don’t know what’s going to happen. I really loved this book: thanks for my advance readers copy. Can’t wait for the rest of the books in the series.

This was a short read that introduced four girls the became friends in school. Each of these girls has lived a life or is living a life of misery. Eden, Everleigh, Magnolia and Addy are caged 'little birds' at The Devil's Playground. One night, the place goes up in flames and all the little birds are freed. I cannot wait to read each of their stories and find out what each woman does with her new found freedom. Their is darkness and triggers in these stories so be aware before you begin. Otherwise, be prepared for these girls to pull you in and steal a piece of your heart. Enjoy!

This is a fairly short dark romance that introduces the four strong female characters who shall head the rest of the series. There’s a number of possible triggers included in this fast read. Despite what they have to endure Addison, Eden, Everleigh and Magnolia refuse to be held down and be victims. This prequel is wonderfully written and has left me eager to see where the authors take their characters in the next four books.
