Exorcism: The Battle Against Satan and His Demons

Rate this book
At a time when many Christians no longer practice their faith, there has been an increase in the attention given to the devil and his devious ways. Because the devil seeks to destroy and separate us from God, all Catholics must be on guard. In The Battle Against Satan and His Demons, Fr. Vincent P. Lampert, a seasoned exorcist, presents authentic Catholic teaching on the devil and his plan against humanity. Providing a window into the merciful ministry of exorcism, Fr. Lampert equips Catholics with the knowledge necessary to avoid become vulnerable to spiritual attack. In Exorcism, you’ll learn • how the Church selects and trains priests for the ministry of exorcism • where and how the devil operates in the world, and what Scripture has to say about it • why it is vital for Catholics to live a vibrant life of faith • what to do if you suspect the presence of the demonic in your life or in others and • how to fend off spiritual attack and build a stronger relationship with God. Exorcism makes clear that the power of Satan to wreak havoc in our lives pales in light of the glorious omnipotence of our Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

Can't recommend this book enough. It is the best introduction I have seen concerning this topic. It is not written to satiety curiosity and to enthrall with stories. It is simple, straight-forward, centered on Jesus Christ, and gives due weight to the ordinary activity of demons in our life and our daily spiritual warfare. There are other very good books on this topic, but this is a great starter and jumping off point to those other books.

If your looking for sensationalism and the need to feed an obsession with demons and satan- you won’t find it here. The clear message is that we need to guard against evil but not live in fear of it. Our awe should be reserved for God. I believe that if all young people of God were to understand and believe what is written this book they would have a clearer perspective on their faith in terms of the spiritual battle with the enemy.

Fr Vincent has a very easy style in writing and person - I came across him on YouTube and his laid back persona and sense of humour is surprising given he battles with Satan regularly but that is what he does in the book he debunks the myths about the whole area of exorcisms. I loved the part where he exorcised 7 demons and then went for a chocolate milkshake to celebrate.

Fr. Lampert lays out all you need to know about battling Satan and he does it in a manner that is clear and pretty easy to understand. From the eight major ways people are inviting in the devil to the best practices to fend off the devil, the information one needs to know is in here.

It makes no difference if you believe or not, it is a reality and unfortunately, way too many people in our society today are walking with the enemy and don't even know it. If you are not with Christ, you are with the devil.

This book is a great read and one I think everyone should check out.

I heard Father Lampert on a podcast and was impressed with his laid back demeanor and so I ventured into his adventures as an exorcist.
Vincent was drafted and sent to the Vatican in 2006 for training as an official exorcist. Most of the people who contact the priest are not possessed but have other issues. In these times of modern science, very few of the troubled are given exorcism by the Church of Rome.
Father Lampert uses a fast and Confession before performing an exorcism in order to be in a State of Grace. He begins by sprinkling holy water on the possessed and prays over the person while holding a crucifix and reciting a series of prayers. The movie with Linda Blair was fairly accurate.
Unfortunately, the book takes a turn with criticisms of Yoga and Reiki as dangerous inroads of the devil. Horoscopes and crystals(watch out Tom Brady) are also on the list of evil. I see them as helpful in the case of Yoga and just new age nonsense with astrology and crystals, although TB#12 has won many Super Bowls while carrying stones given to him by his then wife.
It all ends with a series of prayers, many of them familiar to Roman Catholics. I was hoping for more material covering Father Lampert's exorcisms but it was not to be.
The man seems to be a true believer and a devoted man of the cloth. Exorcism is an inspiring read.

A concise well written book. I am so grateful for Father Lampert's immense knowledge of demonology. I am also grateful he tells his readers we should be focused on God's love for us, and not be too concerned with things of the occult.

This is a fascinating study of the Rite of Exorcism, and its need. I have read several works on this subject, including that of the late Exorcist for the Vatican, Gabriel Amorth, but this may well be the best of all of them.

What makes this work stand out from the rest is the complete lack of sensationalism in this work. This is a serious work on the role of the Exorcist in the Church and in society today. It is a scholarly and carefully written explanation of the role of an Exorcist, and the very real need for him in our dangerous world. Society has been devolving steadily for many, many years. More people now claim to believe in the devil than believe in God. The devil is glorified in social media, in the music industry in particular, in the movies, in literature, and on television. Doors are opened to the satanic that people would not open to people of Faith. There are nationally growing numbers of student organizations devoted to satan worship, where Bible study groups face bureaucratic obstacles to being established.

Many books already on the market discussing this subject have included reports from actual exorcisms, including some lurid and provocative detail. When approached with the seriousness the subject deserves, that sensationalism is unnecessary and can actually distract from what is necessary to effectively combat the devil and his minions.

This book is captivating in its presentation of the richness of the Faith of the Roman Catholic Church (although Fr. Vincent Lampert accurately and appropriately and effectively notes that there may be effective Exorcists of other faiths as well). It gives a strong explanation from a Biblical perspective while giving a good historical context of the practice within the Church.

The focus is always to be on Jesus, and not on the devil. We must all learn to live holier lives and to develop stronger prayer lives and a closer relation to Jesus and his saints, in particular the Blessed Mother. We should not hesitate to lean upon them and call upon them in our daily struggles. Especially effective, of course, is the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel, as God's warrior.

Particularly helpful and instructive in this work is its discussion of the angelic hierarchy. This is emphasized again at the end of the book when Fr. Lampert shares a brief appendix of prayers that are efficacious not only in our battles against evil, but in our personal relationships with God.

There is far too much in entertainment and in social media about the devil and not nearly enough about God. This book is a great reminder of why, as well as how, we need to refocus on our God who made us and loves us. It is well worth the time to read, and to re-read.

I was curious to read this because although I am not Catholic, I do believe the Devil and his disciples are very real and move among us and even possess some of us. I had a very limited knowledge about how to avoid the devil "getting you", so to speak... Having read this, I feel a better understanding and respect for those called to be Exorcists. I was surprised to find out how "innocent" games, going to psychics, "healers", and even "just watching Ghost finder programs" is not a good idea... It's such a conundrum to see these "seemingly helpful and loving" psychics that are so popular & come across as so loving, are actually NOT good at all to seek out and/or watch!! I've always said, "You don't know what you don't know"...
I am always looking for continued education regarding God and Jesus, the angels AND the demons. I'm not interested in demonology or witchcraft, etc... I just wanted to get this information and put it in my back pocket, so to speak! Very interesting and informative and I actually feel better and less afraid of Demons after reading this...
I really liked it.

Demons are real. This is a fact. I know that some people think this is just fantasy stuff but there really is an unseen world all around us of light and dark. I am not Catholic and I haven't been to church in a few years but I have seen things and I know that when Jesus was talking about "unclean spirits" he was speaking literally. Draw close to God and he will draw close to you. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. I stick by that in my every day life. I really like Fr. Lampert and I have enjoyed many of his talks that I've seen on Youtube and I liked this book. I agree with most everything he says. I try not to think that everything is the devil (for one, I like my crystals and I don't really see them as more than decoration so I'm keeping them) but I agree with much he says in this book. Dabbling in the occult may seem harmless but it is not at all harmless, but very very dangerous. Parker Brothers put out some Ouija boards, making it all seem like good, clean fun for kids but it is not! All of these things are a doorway to dark things. I know not everyone will agree and I understand. I grew up with an atheist father and a religious mother. My father and I laughed with the church lady on Saturday Night Live -- the idea that there was a real Satan behind any wrongdoings was laughable. But then, in my later years, I saw some things. I'm glad I did because I now know that these things are real. I'm glad I saw them while I was here on earth and not once I'd got to the other side. That wouldn't be the time I would want to find out. Anyway, I really like Vincent Lampert and this is a good book.

Fantastic book! I learned so much about this ministry reading this book. I picked this up because this author works and lives in Indiana and I was curious about his experiences.

It is not a “tell all” entertainment story, but rather a very practical and clear guide as to what priests who serve in this work require and do, as well as genuine practices every day we can take to be our best selves.

I appreciated the list of prayers he included in the back as reminders of our own intentions to pray and be active in living a faithful life.

I highly recommend for anyone who is curious about this topic. Especially if you are a horror film fan…this will give you a different appreciation for that genre.

First , let me say I'm not a Catholic, I'm Lutheran. I've always found exorcism fascinating, mostly seeing movies about it. But this book is the real deal, and is written by a real exorcist. The exorcisms in the movies are just mainly for shock value; this book tells how exorcisms are really performed and carried out. I especially recommend "The Ordinary Activity of the Devil". It's useful for ALL Christians to stay faithful and fight evil in their own lives.

Amazing. A great read for anyone curious about the subject.

I picked up this book because I was interested in Exorcisms. This book satisfied that urge and did it in the proper way. This book points to Christ and doesn’t obsess over extraordinary things.

However, the chapter on the devil’s ordinary activity was the most helpful to me. More Catholics need to be aware of the battle that surrounds them constantly.

Excellently written. Explains the extraordinary activity of satan in the first few chapters. Fr. Lampart explains the devil, forms of diabolical attacks and causes, and the rite of exorcism. He then writes about the ordinary activity of the devil and lays out how to be victorious and prevent an escalation to extraordinary attacks. I highlighted and earmarked a lot in this book and intend to read it again. I highly recommend it as a spiritual warfare manual.

Great informational book about the ministry of exorcism. I was expecting cases about exorcism in the book when I bought it. However there were none and if there were it was something very short such as a sentence. This matter did not impacted how much I loved the book, since is a very complete book about the ministry and how it works. I highly recommend it.

A interesting read on demons and demonology. The man who wrote this, a priest is allowed to perform exorcisms, which isn’t really too common. So it’s from a cool POV and what the man says is really thoughtful and good. I had a good time reading this shorter book.

A short easy read by a Catholic priest who serves as a modern day exorcist. The book gives a good history of the religion’s perspective on demons, possession, exorcism, and spirituality. A Catholic reader will likely enjoy this book more than a non-Catholic.

This is an informational book about the Catholic practice of Exorcism. It is not sensationalist version of the practice. It is a very helpful book in understanding the history behind it and the reasons for it.

LIKES- loveee a good spiritual world book. So many crazy stories!! I also love the included prayers at the end.

DISLIKES- none really. I feel like I already knew a lot of what was said but it was nice to solidify my beliefs by reading these concepts again.

This left me underwhelmed. The Father (author) proselytizes about Christianity to a degree that detracts from learning more about the nuances, intricacies, and cultural history of exorcism. This topic intrigues me, but frankly I didn’t learn much (if anything) new.
