After shattering his soul during a spell, Lazarus has just six days to find the pieces and put them back together. Not an easy task when every reaper in the underworld is gunning to claim his soul, including the reaper king, Thanatos.
To reclaim the lost fragments of his soul, he’ll have to face old enemies, travel to Faerie to battle his most fearsome foe yet, and acquire a vast sum of sugary snack cakes. If he fails, more than his own life is on the line. Mask is amassing an army to retake Earth and snuff out all life forever.
Can Lazarus pull himself together in time to save the world one more time?
Excellent book! The battle with Mask is not over and Lazarus needs to get his soul pieces back together. As Lazarus searches for the shattered scattered pieces of his soul. He will encounter past Titans and Thanos who wants to reap him. Odin still has his shadow which is part of his soul. The fight to rid the worlds of the Mask continues with alliances to save Summer Court in Faire. Some will die and others will change but the deed is only partially complete. They will still have to close the seal to keep the Mask out. Back in New Orleans, Lazarus with the help of other must fight to get the pieces of his soul back so he can return to his body. Thanos would like to reap him but it might not happen. Nate is the temporary Pale Horseman but the job is a good fit for him. Questions remain, will Nate stay the Horseman, will Mask be defeated finally, and will Khaleda win her battle to rule hell?
I really enjoyed this one - it's a very busy book, with a lot going on, and sometimes I felt like the theme of Lazarus being confronted with his past in various ways while attempting to put his soul back together was a bit over the top - but there's great humor in it and I enjoyed the camaraderie of the cast. That was really the best part of this book for me, seeing so many of Lazarus' friends and family together, dealing with each other, snarking back and forth, growing and changing along with Laz, and all while trying to save Faerie and Lazarus. I listened to the audio for this one, as I have with all of the Lazarus Codex books for which there is audio. Travis Baldree is impressive - his voicing of women in particular. It's hard to fathom how all those voices can come from one person.
Laz is back and, while he beat the illness in the last book, his battle with the cause behind it is not over. This book expands to include his fight for both his world and Faerie which grows to be far more complicated you would ever think.
*slight spoilers*I'm distraught to learn that E.A.Copen's intending to make Lost Soul, Lazarus Codex series #11 her penultimate ever in the series - I hope it's not true, as I'm already re-reading some of the earlier ones - they're so great I've enjoyed them even more the second time around. In Lost Soul, we learn it's Laz himself who's had to pull his own soul out, to seal a portal that had been opened by the evil alien predator known as Mask, before laying waste to large areas of Laz's beloved New Orleans with the aid of Pestilence. As a result Laz's soul shattered and now he's in a race against the clock to find the pieces (and his shadow back from Odin), as a soulless wandering spirit while his body lies in intensive care wasting away under the terrified eyes of Emma and Nate. If he doesn't succeed within 7 days the life-support will be switched off and Baron Samedi will dig his grave, meaning he can never be revived by anyone - a terrifying fate even by Laz's laid-back standards.Who unexpectedly helps Laz in his quest - and what does this person want in return? Why doesn't Laz want Emma to know what's going on? Who else can see/hear Laz in his invisible ghostly form? What does Jean Lafitte have to do in the Summer Court? Who returns to fight alongside Laz and the others? Can Laz avoid the Reapers? Who is Thanatos? Why does Remy need to accept a challenge from Fenrir? There's so much to thrill at and become enthralled by in Lost Soul by E.A. Copen, that you'll make a dent in the edge of your seat where you've been perched throughout this epic pre-apocalyptic 'sword and sorcery' adventure. As for your fingernails, forget them - they'll be frayed up to the elbows where you've been chewing them to bits in your excitement. Be sure to grab your copy as soon as you possibly can - remember, as it is for Lazarus - time's running out!
Lost Soul is Book 11 of The Lazarus Codex series by E.A. Copen. What can I say but this series is the perfect example of phenomenal world building and characters that are well developed, interesting, funny at times and likeable. Laz is back and trying to gather the scattered pieces of his soul and still deal with the fallout of his last adventure. I am sorry to see this series come to an end. I am anxious to see what E.A. Copen has in store for Laz in Book 12, the final in this series. One can only hope that we will see Laz again in the future. I highly recommend this book and series. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.
When I started reading this adventure,I had no idea where it was going to go,or how much that I have enjoyed it. I am ,on one hand excited and the other kind of sad,to get the last book in this great story!
