For the first time in years, I let go of everything and drowned in feeling. I didn’t try to push it away. To manage or control it. I let it overtake me. And as I fell, I knew I’d never be the same.”
”But something about Hunter had called to me from the first day. A kindred spirit, I realized. Someone who knew what it was to struggle with guilt and ghosts. Someone who I knew wouldn’t judge me for the mess that was my heart and soul. But that kind of vulnerability carried risk. And it felt like I was walking around with an open chest cavity.”
”He simply stared as if he were peering into my soul. Looking for everything I’d ever held back. And what I’d kept out of view from Hunter’s probing gaze most was that I was falling for him. I knew this one act could tip the scales. But I didn’t care. I wanted to fall.”
”But I didn’t lose sight of his eyes. I could drown in those depths. They made every promise I’d told him not to say aloud. Vowed that he’d stay when that was never guaranteed. I lost myself in those eyes. And as I tipped over the edge and went spiraling down, my eyes returned that promise—even though they shouldn’t have.”
”The sky was beautiful at twilight, but none of it truly sank in. I moved like a robot as Hunter helped me into the truck. I barely took in my surroundings as he drove us home. The only thing I could think about was how fragile life was. And how easily you could lose it all.”
“Mom always said that one needed the whole picture. The good and the bad. You couldn’t rewrite history.”
“Hunter pulled me tighter against him. “Life is full of unknowns. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take risks. Make that jump. Because as many things that can go wrong, a million more can go right.”
“It gave me hope. No matter how long something had gone unseen and abandoned, it was always possible to give it life again.”

Hell. The last thing I needed was the knowledge that this attraction was two-sided. But it was more than attraction. It was lust mixed with a healthy dose of understanding. And it packed a potent punch.
“There’s nothing about you I’d ever regret.” Screw my rules. The fact that we worked together. Practically lived together. The world around us could burn, and I wouldn’t give a damn. Just as long as Piper was in my arms.
“I don’t want to run from you.” He was the first person I’d truly wanted to fight for. To resist the urge to pull away from.
“Then you won’t. I’ll help you stay.”
It was a special kind of torture to want something so badly it physically hurt. And to be terrified of it at the same time.
“You don’t need to be wrapped up in my mess.”
“Your mess is exactly where I want to be.”
“I love you … You’re loved. And I’m not going anywhere.”
