I don't remember the last time I felt so much while reading a graphic novel. I was terrified, I was heartbroken and in tears, I was happy, then I was depressed. It was such a rollercoaster of emotions. If you want to feel something, just read it. At your own risk, but read it.
Holy cow, that ending was just phenomenal. These might be my favorite books of the whole year. I just don’t know how you can beat it. Forever will be crying because of these. The first 2 were dark and this one was filled with hope and love, the messaging behind it and the final few images just hit me like a freight train.
this was my first manhwa. it's a great series. very dark but I like that every now and then. thanks to Urbon for the recommendation! now to see what other manhwa are out there!
Trois manga superbement bien dessiné, une belle petite histoire ou un peu toutes les émotions sont abordées et que j’ai éprouvée également tout au long de ce manga. J’ai Adoré!
There are things I really appreciated about this (atmosphere, art, style overall), but damn, I really can’t help but feel that the entire point of this story is to just make you depressed. Feels melodramatic in that way. Pulls on your heartstrings because how can it not, but it leaves you feeling like there was no point to it all.
2.5. I can see why others like it. Perhaps not for me.
Gave me hope, took it away, gave me hope, took it away, gave me hope, took it away, and then finally gave me hope. This series catches humanity so gracefully whilst showing the good and bad of humans.
This series genuinely broke me a bit, I went in blind and I think that made it have an even bigger impact on me. Although the aspect and the writing may seem simplistic, The Horizon portrays the return of the human mind to its basic principles, what indeed makes us human, along with a touch of viscerality that adds to the whole picture. In a way, it reminded me of Lord of the Flies, since we can see children basically discover morality and different philosophical approaches on life thanks to the horrific warzone the whole world seems to have turned into, circumstances they did not choose, but that they're forced to put up with through the (not so simple) act of living. These books made me feel like I was reading the embodiment of the quote "I talk to God, but the sky is empty", made me cry several times and I don't regret a single moment of it. It truly captures the essence of all the atrocities man has chosen to be governed by, fear, anger, war, principles, and how we each have to carry these burdens even if we weren't given a choice, and a great way to make us realize that we should look around and be more aware of how we decide to see life and how we live it.
I’ve written about The Horizon before and the story / art are a 5/5 for me. JH is a talented storyteller. He gets all the stars.
I’ve rated it a 4/5 though because I was a tad disappointed with the formatting and translation of the Horizon from vertical webtoon to a hardcopy book.
First, the good: I love how important panels were emphasized by making them a splash page; I often found myself lingering on these pages. I think the third volume of the Horizon did this masterfully especially when it’s the only volume that uses color.
At the same time, there is some odd formatting across the volumes that threw me off. The bottom panels are at times cut off so you can’t see the full expression of a character or a speech bubble will look out of place. I can’t imagine how challenging it is to reformat from a vertical layout to a horizontal one but I’m disappointed that some of the excellent art / typesetting were cut off.
I also wish the print quality of the black / white scenes was better. These scenes are so clear in its digital format despite the dark lighting in some scenes yet I had a lot of difficulty reading these same panels in the physical copy. Again, it’s disappointing considering how manga volumes, which are considerably cheaper than these manhwa volumes, can be crisp and clear.
This is one of my most favorite webtoons. I just wish the publishing company took more care in printing it.
I’m honestly struggling to find the right words for this one. It’s haunting, heartbreaking, and unexpectedly beautiful. I smiled just as often as I wanted to cry. This book is about accepting life in all its messiness, the joy and the pain, and damn, that’s a hard truth to sit with. It’s going to stay with me for a while, and I’ll be thinking about it long after the last page.
