Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
The 100 point list is a huge revelation and it explained a lot for me. First why kei who has 22 points left will not be leaving the world of gantz for 21 volumes. Second how we will get kato back of course, it turns out that the writer is alright not so heartless after all. I am wondering though will they return to live in the real world, or return first in the world of gantz which means they will need 100 points to go free. But seeing that he intends to revive Tae and Kishimoto, i would have to go with resurrection in the real world because both of them can't fight for shit.
This volume marks a turning point in Kei’s development. Tae is his heart and he has been slowly learning empathy after not being treated to any while growing up. I love that he bases who he wants to be on Kato and Kato did the same when alive. Akira is very interesting in that he was treated to attention his whole life but ends up an empty, unfeeling asshole just like his brother, Kei. Tae’s image is everything Kei thought he didn’t want, but she is everything he needs and loves. I love that they have a life together and, in the end, the writer stays true to love vs lust.
I also love that the team he has now has lasting effects. I love the relationships, especially the one between the little boy and Kaze. I can’t wait to get to the WAR arc, the endgame for all this madness. And this is my fourth reread, so I should be sick of it by now but I’m not. Probably will read this for years to come.
After the person in the apartment room got scored 100, Gantz would give two things for the person who finished the score. Still excite me to finish this series!
Just when I thought this series inspired by Alice in Borderland. Turns out Gantz is the one of which inspired so many survival theme series.
Finally back to reading this. Just bought the newest Gantz series spin-off so wanna catch up.
So the chase is still on. Basically Kei is protecting the love of his life. Most of this volume is one big fight scenes with some huge "oh shit" moments. Then the end starts to give some stories to other major characters and then we get some big reveals. New rules or gifts that will be given to Gantz people. So by the end we have some new twist.
Good: The fights are still pretty great, even as over the top as they are, they are still special. I also thought a death in here was really well done and fucked up. The new rules also will lead to new things.
Bad: The other characters storylines really weren't very interested and took up a lot of time. The kid introduced seems will be used for shock value too.
Overall this is a solid volume, some fucked up moments, but not as great as the last volume. Still good though so a 3 out of 5.
Whelp... I’m back on my bullshit. As is “Gantz.” Ninety percent action, ten percent story. Kei does have new motivation, which is nice... but was it worth watching a man kick the shit out of a five-year-old boy over a pudding cup? Probably not. It’s just more “edgy for the sake of being edgy.” Slightly less gratuitous nudity... but I’m sure they’ll make up for it in the next volume.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
This whole volume was meant to evoke tragic sadness and frustrated anger I guess. It... didn't work for me. I was kind of proven right with regards to Tae - she serves as nothing more than a weak point for the awesomeness that is Kurono. I get that a hero needs a weakness, but the way the keep crying out for each other comes across as somewhat annoying. I might have felt more for her if Tae actually had a personality. The better parts of this volume are actually the side stories. I like how Sakurai gets fleshed out with more backstory and that poor kid. It'll be interesting to see what happens to that child in future missions (I hope the kid's not just a setup for another tragic scene). And Izumi... I get his rationale, but I find the lack of responses towards Izumi after the whole thing is over to be quite baffling and irritating - just like that massacre. It's like the moment the mission ends, all is forgiven, which doesn't make sense.
Volume 16: Chapter 179-190 Phase 1: Missions Arc 7: Kill Tae Kojima Mission Arc 8: Oni Alien Mission
Kurono's side is losing as Sakata and the old man injured. Kei tried really hard to save Tae from getting killed by the Izumi's side. After went through several battles, Kei's suit is powering down. At that time, Tae come to his place. Izumi find the chance to kill Tae. Tae is dead. Kurono mourned for Tae's death. But, he find another way to resurrect Tae by achieving 100 points. He sworn to himself to resurrect Tae, Kato and Kishimoto.
Another mission started. They need to kill an oni alien that looks like a human. New members also introduced. There is a kid named Takeshi that teleported to the room. His death was very tragic 😢.

In the series of Gantz, this is the only volume I did not like so far. Very bad.
Why did Tae has to come back bruh? Is she stupid? Does she has a death wish?
We learn that one a Gantz player gets 100 points, he/she can do one of the following: 1) Be freed with memories erased. 2) To be provided with an extremely powerful weapon. 3) Can revive a person from the player's memory.
Hence our protagonist wishes to secure 100 points to revive Tae (his girlfriend).

In Gantz/16 the missions continue. Kei Kurono realizes something that has changed his outlook. A mission ends and a new one begins. There are some character changes and those within the group start to have a different outlook. This is a pretty good edition.
I love when a story gives us both the reader and main character another stronger reason to keep going. I can't wait for Kurono to get 100 points and I can't believe I actually care for him now.
