Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
This one is like in between battles breather, there is not much action really but it was sorely needed, to let kei live a little and allow new characters to be introduced to the reader. But i hope hiroya keeps them for at least a few volumes or it would all go to waste. I mean what good would introducing new characters would be if you are going to instantly kill them the next chance that present it self!!
Yeah… yeah… first it’s the movie “Scanners”, then the PE teacher wants a blow job, then a new fighter enters The World Warrior Tournament and then we finish with a feral hamster. Makes perfect fucking sense.
This is a much more somber volume. We have time to relax and breath. Gantz is usually high end, death everywhere, and boobs flopping around type of Manga. However, what happens when we put that to the side and give some characters introductions and growth? We get Gantz Volume 10 which might be one of the better ones.
Kei finishes the fight from the last volume and let's just say he's using his brains to win instead of just going all out. It's a great ending but what comes next is better. Him settling with his girlfriend and appreciating the small things. Then we're introduced to a new character who wants to die but instead meets a person who gives him the power of Telekinesis. Interesting to say the least. Then we end it with a growth for our main hero.
What I liked: Giving Kei time to grow and become a hero. It's working. The finale of the last boss battle was great. Less fan service bullshit and sex actually felt powerful and not to jerk off to. Also the new character is pretty interesting and can become a hero or villain. The ending also leaves us with some hope.
What I disliked: Holy hell batman does Hiroya Oku have to always have a guy getting his dick sucked by another guy in a rape fashion? Every Manga I read has this. I'm just wondering if this is a fetish of somesort. Bullying is already screwed up, mouth rape isn't needed. Also the new character took a bit to get used to.
Overall I really enjoyed this volume despite my two complaints. It's giving us a lot more to take in, some great fighting moments, and a main character who is finally evolving. Let's hope it keeps this up!
It's very difficult to read and review Gantz for the first time.. Particularly with this volume we have a large change of characters.. A little more thoughtful volume...which on past experience might morph into something else entirely for the next one.. So I'm looking for answers and an overall grand scheme of things vibe..but the more I read..the more I suspect that's just not going to happen.
I keep flipping between a two and a three for this one. On the one hand, it does seem like Kei is finally becoming more dimensional as a character, even though he's still a whiner. I have to keep reminding myself he's supposed to be a 15 year old boy, which means I should cut him some slack for his crappy attitude towards girls, but then I also have to take into account the absurdity of a 15 year old boy being the fighting hero in the whole damn scenario. On the other hand, the author decided to introduce a thoroughly unnecessary paranormal aspect to the story, with the telekinesis. I guess I can just swallow that stupid pill, and accept it as another part of this universe, but I'll do it with protest.
Volume 10 introduces a kid with telekinesis powers who kills his bullies and a guy who looks like a character from Street Fighter Turbo that goes around beating up the strongest kids at high schools around Tokyo. 5 stars.
The police force trying to kill the shorty alien but most of them were killed brutally. When Kurono get the chance, he used the X-Gun to kill the shorty alien. Aftermath; Kurono, Tae and Izumi are the only survivor from their class. Izumi hospitalized, Kurono and Tae in a relationship.
Then, the storyline entering a new arc. Few new characters have been introduced such as Sakurai, a boy who always get bullied, and Sakata, a man with a psychic power. He taught Sakurai to use the psychic power in order to kill the bully. The other character is Kaze, the one who always challenge strong people. He lose to Kurono.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Pokud vám stačí krev a kozy, budete spokojení.
Zatím mi to absolutně nedává smysl a celé je to "dafuq did I read." A já přemýšlím, jestli si půjčím další knížky, protože to přece sakra musí mít nějakej smysl, ne?
Finally, things slow down and it almost falls into a slice-of-life pace. It's kind of ok to finally get to see Kurono as an actual student. The girlfriend part is again pretty sudden and out of nowhere, with no build-up at all, just like how Kurono lost his virginity. And things suddenly jump to another student with budding psychic powers. It almost felt like a different manga, but I think it's pretty obvious this is a setup of just what's going to happen to this new student. It's pretty formulaic with the way the author keeps just adding new themes/elements with no build-up but oddly enough, it's still fairly enticing to just keep reading rather than going all eyeball-rolling.
Best volume so far and I think it’s due to the fact that we actually get to live and breathe with the characters a bit instead of nonstop action (which I love, so it’s nice that we’re seemingly striking a balance here). Kei’s growth is awesome and it really shows here. I hated that weirdo ‘til now. I’m still really conflicted on the hypersexual nature of the series but I’m really interested in seeing how that develops as the characters and story begin to really mature.
This volume is different compared to others. We got introduced to two new characters: one (Sakurai) having a psychic ability passed down by another guy; another (Kaza Dazaemon) guy is very tall and strong and starts beating every high ranked fighter in every school.
What??? Our character is living in a dream inside Gantz all this time after the lone fight with a group of aliens?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
In Gantz/10, Kei Kurono, the main character goes through a lot of emotional upheaval. Some good and some bad. There is no apparent Gantz challenge but they exist nonetheless. It's a little different episode.
Some new characters are introduced and new elements added to the story, I don't wanna say from out of left field because this is GANTZ we're talking about. Still some character development for the lead here though, it will be curious to see how the new characters are woven into his plight.
