Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
Why exactly would you kill an amazing villain like Nishi? Now i know the answer! to come up with a better villain in Izumi! i mean this guy has killed so many people who will probably join him in the world of gantz, he will be the most hated since he killed them all himself.
Holy fuck this volume was screwed up in so many ways.
So Kei is having trouble recovering after his last fight. He just kind to wants to settle and be away from that damn room till he figures a way out of this game. Simple right? Except WRONG. The crazy stalker fellow from the previous volumes is looking around and he wants to die. Kei refuses to kill him because he's not a psycho but this guy is. So what does he do? Decides to go on a rampage and shoot a bunch of innocent people for no other reason than he could. We begin to find out why previous characters in this series were introduced as this man slaughters a bunch of people we've met before.
Good: Gantz is never boring, I'll give it that. This volume is disturbing to say the least. The psycho dresses himself up and paints his face Black to make sure no one can pin point who he was after he's gone murdering people despite wanting to die. So it's all types of fucked up. The murders are brutal and hard to watch and the chance of hope keeps getting ripped away every step.
Bad: The volume suffers some odd moments of characters stalling and thinking dumb things. I didn't understand some characters thought process or why Kei doesn't just burst out of the train.
Overall this was a exciting, quickly paced, and brutal chapter in the long running series. It's been on a roll so hope it keeps going. A 4 out of 5.
The 11th edition of Gantz seems more violent than ever. The main character, Kei Kurono is back in high school and trying to prepare for the next episode of Gantz, the event where the deceased attempt to fight aliens in suits that given them extra powers. In this episode there are new characters and old ones with new importance. The cover is blue and there is a different feel to the story.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
Ok... so I guess Gantz is interesting because it just blows away expectations. From a transfer student to a psychopath, from worrying about girlfriend to worrying about girlfriend getting slaughtered (I feel like the whole incident dragged on for too long though - could have been shorter). I guess this is the recurring theme with this manga - things just come out of nowhere and yet they're entertaining nonetheless. And I was right, those new characters that were showcased, yea, pretty much meant for Gantz - the author is setting up a team.
This books starts to change the general feeling of the Gantz series. It's moving away from the stories in the original story line that the anime was based off of and coming more into the real world. Violence reigns in the real world now, and Gantz is no longer kidnapping people into it's room. Izumi has a small black ball and a request from Gantz to get it more people. A shoot up in Shinjuku and the newly introduced characters are quick to die. If you've seen the live action movies, much of the second movie, "Gantz II Perfect Answer" was inspired by this continuing story line.
Aaannd...we're back, new color tone on the cover, new angles to the story, this volume is quite a shocker. Not that any of this series is for the the feint of heart with its gratuitous violence and sex, but this one might hit home hard for a lot of people with its news-adjacent events. Hiroya Oku does not shy away from the brutality and that is precisely why this saga is so unforgettable and effective.
I'm trying a few manga and the art style of Oku appealed so I picked it at random. Clearly we are halfway through the run and the characters are well established so they seemed a little casually introduced to me, the main guy doing little more than shouting "WHAT?!" as the events unfold. Those events are intriguing and shocking however, enough to make me keen to read more and go back to see what I've missed. Art is very good.

Izumi knows about the Gantz. He is one of them and set free after completing missions. He has a small black ball that asked him to kill more people.
Izumi disguised as a black man and starting killing people in Shinjuku by doing a mass shooting. Lots of people die. Kurono set off to Shinjuku to save Tae. Izumi confronts Kaze, Sakata and Sakurai and kill them.
So, now Gantz is providing a message kind of thing which consists of "Bring as many people as you can to Gantz". So previous players who were been to Gantz think of a plan to kill as many people as they can.
We got some cool fight from Sakurai and his master against the gun killer (Izumi). We got stopping bullets with magic, rising the killer into the air, etc.
Sadly at the end, both Sakurai and his master died.

I think I have never seen or consumed any media this f*cked up. Gantz has no chill in showing the worst of the worst. This is definitely not something anyone can consume. It really leaves an impression on you. Racism, a mass-shooting... Am I even allowed to "enjoy" this? That word feels so wrong to use for what this volume has shown us. It's a good story, but a very very dark one.
jealousy, izumi being a major loser, random u.s. war on iraq question, hollywood level makeup and mags, unrealistic acquirement of guns in japan, and meatshields....what more can you possibly ask for
Ooooof blackface. Not cool. Though hella impressive makeup job because he legit looked like he changed his race and not just put on makeup. Though I know Izumi is skilled at a lot of things, this level of makeup doesn't feel like one of them. Still, even with blackface, this was a thrilling read.
