Barbara's love of writing developed out of a love of reading. Growing up in an all-boy neighborhood, she spent quite a bit of time reading through her mother's large library, many of which were romantic novels. After graduating from the University of California at Santa Barbara, she went into Public Relations, but soon discovered that writing was her true passion.
Barbara was traditionally published for many years, then formed her own publishing company FOG CITY PUBLISHING in 2011 and has since sold over 10 million books! She has published 75 novels ranging from mystery thrillers to romantic suspense and contemporary romance.
Her book SUMMER SECRETS was a #1 New York Times bestseller! And twenty-five other novels have also appeared on the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Lists. She is currently writing two ongoing series, a contemporary romance series set in Whisper Lake and a romantic suspense series: Off The Grid: FBI Series. She is also known for her bestselling Callaway Family Series, which offers up fourteen books and two novellas.
When Barbara isn't writing or publishing, which isn't very often these days, she is playing tennis, hanging out with friends and family in beautiful Lake Tahoe or reading books!

Barbara Freethy is one of my favorite authors and a new book from her always feels like comfort food that I want to gobble up.
This did not disappoint. This is the 5th installment of the Whisper Lake series and can be read as a standalone. This author has created characters that you feel like you know and want to hang out with.
Keira is spread so thin with her boutique, real estate business, design business, and caring for her mother, yet she found a moment to respond to a dating app. which brought her out of her comfort zone. She meets her "date" and there is definitely chemistry. She soon discovers that her "date" is not from the app and she leaves to meet her actual date. The date doesn't go well and she is not going to let that deter her as her life is full and very busy. But she is running into "Dante" and beginning to feel butterflies. She senses he feels the same, but he is in Whisper Lake temporarily because he had a sports injury and the rehab center in Whisper Lake is the best and he is hoping to get back to his team and pitch again. The two cannot deny their attraction and decide to have fun for the short duration that Dante will be there. They are having fun, yet Keira is distracted with her mom's personal life. She has met someone that she immediately doesn't trust and he is giving her reasons not to trust him. Dante and Keira witness some strange events that include her mom's new boyfriend and soon learn that his past is catching up to him.
The plot starts quickly and there is a rhythm to the story that keeps you engaged. I like that the characters from the previous books are added to the storyline and were getting updates to their lives. This was another winner from this author and this series.
Opinion Breakdown The Good: The premise. The side characters.
The Not-So-Good: The chemistry. It might be because it was pretty much fade to black, but I also felt the emotional chemistry was lacking.
The Bad: The drama with the girlfriend and the mom's boyfriend. It was a little eye roll inducing.
Overall: This was a little less than 3 "just okay" stars. I feel weird saying this, but it was oddly too much dialogue. I know that I sometimes struggle when books are too much inner thoughts, but this was the opposite. I felt like it was all dialogue! I also didn't really feel their connection and I'm surprised I stuck with it, especially with the ott mom's boyfriend drama.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Keira and Dante's story. Dante is in town to rehab his shoulder after a potential professional baseball career ending injury. He meets Keira in a bar in the small town when she mistakes him for her date from a dating website. They hit it off instantly but the timing is bad for both of them. There is some family drama, some girlfriend drama, and some personal baggage they have to work through...and they get a HFN ending.
Point Of View (POV): This alternated between focusing on Keira and Dante in 3rd person narrative.
Overall Pace of Story: Alright, it did feel slow at times but I never skimmed
Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings
H (Hero) rating: 3 stars. Dante. He was alright.
h (heroine) rating: 3 stars. Kiera. She was alright too.
Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed
Push/Pull: Yes
Heat level: Super mild. They have some mild tension, chemistry, and non-descriptive scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.
Descriptive sex: Not really, pretty close to fade to black
OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes
Sex scene with OW or OM: No
Cheating: Yes
Separation: No
Possible Triggers: Yes
Closure: This had alright closure but not nearly enough for me to call it a HEA, so I'm calling it a HFN ending
Safety: This one should be either Safe with exception or Not Safe for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences
After a strong start (I love a good meet-cute!), things started landing in foul territory again and again.
The hero is an MLB pitcher who has gone to rehab his shoulder after surgery at a clinic in the mountains of Colorado (I think? It’s been a couple weeks since I listened…). The heroine moved back home and gave up her dreams as a fashion designer when her mom was in a bad car accident. He’s only going to be in town for three weeks, she doesn’t think she can leave….
I had issues with a couple things. First, the hero has a girlfriend. Yes, she’s shallow, probably only with him for the exposure for her modeling career, and wasn’t there to support him during his injury/surgery. But they are still technically together when he kisses the heroine of the book. Not cool, man. Not cool. Or romantic.
Then there’s all the “he’s leaving soon” and “we live in two different worlds” malarkey. I get that the heroine was concerned about her mom, but pitchers don’t last all that long - and this one was already on the older side. Just have a freaking discussion about your future already, if you want one.
I’ve read a handful of Barbara Freethy books, and this one is definitely my least favorite.
Barbara Freethy never disappoints. This newest installment in her Whisper Lake series, has it all, romance, drama, danger and a little steam. We meet Keira and Dante, who find their HEA in spite of the crazy. Make sure you add this one to your TBR list.
I have such a soft spot for Keira, who does too much and is juggling four hundred different balls while worrying and caring over her mom and might actually be a little stuck. Sheesh, feels like the universe is hitting me over the head! But really, she is wonderful and giving and so talented. Now of only she could figure out what she doesn’t like about her mom’s new love interest… Dante is driven. Baseball has always been his life and the only thing he’s kept his eye on. But there’s something about Keira that he can’t stop thinking about. No matter that he’s kinda sorta seeing a super model. No matter he’s only in town for a few short weeks… All in all, I really enjoyed this story, it pulled me in and kept me on my toes!
Keira Blake mistakes a guy at the bar as her blind date. After a conversation, she realizes she has the wrong person, but she is attracted to the man she had first approached. It turns out that he is staying in town at a friend’s inn, so she sees him again and they develop a relationship that begins to feel like love. Trouble is, he is only going to be in town a short while.
Barbara Freethy has done it again! I absolutely loved If We Never Met, it is an incredible love at first sight love story. It is the fifth book in the Whisper Lake series. Each book in the series gets better and better, but I think that If We Never Met is my favorite story in the series so far. Barbara Freethy has once again shown that she is an amazing storyteller. I could not put it down. I loved every page. I really enjoy how the book is told from the perspective of the main characters. I love getting the insight and feelings from the different characters. If We Never Met is a second chance at first love story and is filled with heartbreaking and heartwarming moments. I love the lighter moments where I find myself smiling and laughing out loud. My favorite moments are the ones that pull at my heartstrings that cause me to sigh, as I read the heartbreaking moments. If We Never Met is filled with such moments, and with so much emotion. It is filled with all those things that we have come to love and expect in a Barbara Freethy love story, especially the poignant and bittersweet moments that filled this page turner. If We Never Met is the story of Dante DeAngelis, a major league baseball pitcher and Keira Blake, part-time realtor, boutique owner and clothing designer. Dante is in Whisper Lake rehabbing an injured shoulder that Grayson Cole surgically repaired. Keira and Dante meet when Keira sits down at Dante’s table at Micky’s Bar and Grill assuming that he is her blind date. Only when the waitress tells her that her date “Danny” is waiting for her at another table, does Keira realize her mistake. Keira needs a plus one for her best friend, Hannah’s wedding, which is the reason behind the blind date. Keira’s friends reveal Dante’s identity and the fact that he has a girlfriend. Keira and Dante continue to run into each other, but Keira does not want to get involved with him because Dante has a girlfriend and is only going to be in Whisper Lake until his arm is better. Conversation between Keira and Dante flows so easily, I love that both Keira and Dante share secrets with one another that they have not shared with anyone before, especially the secrets that Dante shares about his family. I love that they were both so vulnerable and that Keira changed because of Dante’s encouragement. As Keira and Dante spend time together, things change between them despite all the negative publicity that has plagued them. I love all the changes that Keira was willing to make in her life, because she wanted a future with Dante. I love the actions that Dante took to save Keira’s life, even knowing he might risk injuring himself again. I loved the multiple plot twists in the story, and how they are all so wonderfully resolved in this incredible story. I loved that If We Never Met is a more than just a romance, there are dilemmas that both Keira and Dante are facing that need to be resolved. I love that there were multiple storylines: Keira’s relationship with her mother, Ruth, and how she feels like she is the only one who can take care of her, Dante’s rehabilitation and the impact on his career, the mystery behind Mark Langley and the mysterious red-haired woman, but most importantly Keira and Dante’s love story. I love how all the storylines get so beautifully resolved. I love all the descriptions of the Whisper Lake setting that Barbara Freethy detailed, it makes me want to visit. If We Never Met is filled with the poignant and bittersweet moments in the story as well as the plot twists, that I have come to love and expect in Barbara Freethy's stories. I love the cast of characters in If We Never Met and I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. Who doesn’t love family and friends that always have each other’s backs? Reading If We Never Met felt like a family reunion, because the reader was able to catch up with the other characters in the series. I thoroughly enjoyed If We Never Met, who doesn’t love a love at first sight love story. Highly recommend this incredible love story and am so looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I loved everything about this book from the small town feel to the love story that leads to a happily ever after.
Professional baseball player, Dante is in Whisper Lake to rehab his shoulder after a surgery that is leaving his future up in the air. This small town is what he needs so that he can mentally and physically get his life, career and future all back on track. He was never looking to meet someone, but when a beautiful girl sits down next to him at the bar and mistakes him for her date, Dante falls into a comfortable conversation and realizes how nice it is to talk to Keira. This is only their first interaction and because the town is small, they continue to run into each other.
Keira cannot believe how easy it is to talk with Dante, but nothing can come of this relationship because she lives in Whisper Lake and has to many family responsibilities and Dante is a professional pitcher and will be heading back home to Florida once his rehab is completed in a few weeks. However, the paparazzi cause some issues, Dante's current dating partner, Keira's moms health and new dating status all lead to continuously bringing Dante and Keira lives together. They must find a way to work through their problematic situations and figure out if they really will have a shot at a happily ever after.
This is another great book in the Whisper series and it was nice to catch up with all the previous characters from the first two books. Order this book now and enjoy this wonderful lead won't be disappointed!
Kierra and Dante are my favorite Whisper Lake couple! Although I will say I love them all!
Kierra is being pulled into so many directions and doesn't know which lane to stick to, the boutique, the realtor business, or her dream job as a fashion designer. Never mind her trying to find a plus one for her best friend's wedding. She has no time for dating. Until one night she decides to get on a dating app and attempt to find a plus one.
Dante is in Whisper Lake to rehab his shoulder that he had repair surgery on. They have a new state of the art facility and his pro team wants him to go there and get the best care. He did not expect a beautiful woman to sit down at his table and not know who he is and strike up a conversation. After a bit, Kierra soon realizes she is at the wrong table for her blind date. And feels foolish, but still felt a major connection to Dante.
Dante only has a few weeks in Whisper Lake, but just can't stop being near Kierra and her goodness. Kierra is trying her hardest to stay away and to keep her feelings guarded, but that does not work. She falls hard and fast for Dante, but knows he will be leaving soon and that baseball is everything to him. Until an accident happens and Dante realizes what is important to him, that Kierra takes first place in his heart.
I loved reading Dante and Kierra's love story and how they fall in love and the obstacles they have to overcome. Plus this story, just like all of Barbara's stories has a bit of a mystery in it and someone out to do harm. So beautifully written and to show how much grief and mental health can affect a person.
I can't wait for another installment of Whisper Lake!
I was impressed with how strong and kind hearted Keira was. She was a great friend and daughter. I loved how she met Dante. That had to be one of the funniest parts of the book, but also a wonderful mistake. I felt bad for Dante that he had hurt his pitching arm and was in Whisper Lake for therapy. I know he was so worried that he would never be able to pitch again. The woman that he had been dating was a real piece of work and only thought about herself. She sure caused enough trouble. I was glad that Dante and Keira had a chance to really get to know each other, even if it was going to be for a few weeks. Keira had been so great about taking care of her mother that I was glad to see her mother better and want her daughter to get a life. Unfortunately when a man from Keira’s mother’s past came into the picture, trouble started. It got a lot more exciting in their town. I loved the book and strongly encourage you to read it. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.
Barbara Freethy is one of my favorite authors, she creates amazing characters and stories, with a lot of love, friendship and mystery that make her books always very, very good.
Dante is in Whisper Lake to rehabilitate his shoulder after surgery that took him out of the life he loves and has known for years, baseball. When a beautiful brunette sits at his table at the bar where he went to eat something and starts talking he is fascinated... And their lives start to change.
Keira is balancing several dishes at once in her life, managing the business, taking care of her mother and doesn't have time to find someone to date, but her best friend Hannah is getting married and insists she get a plus one so she goes on a date with a man she's been chatting with by text. What happens when she meets a perfect man, who listens to her and the conversation flows naturally, but who isn't the right man? Or is he?
Dante and Keira met by mistake, but I think that by fate, the two go through some setbacks, a devastating mystery, but will find a happy-happy ending.
I love with Barbara Freethy puts secondary stories so interspersed into the main story that it makes us love and cheer for everyone involved.
I'm already wanting to know the stories of Dante's brothers.
Barbara Freethy is in my Top 5 of go-to authors for contemporary romance. I am guaranteed well-developed characters whose back stories are complete but don’t slow down the action. Freethy’s characters are friends I’d love to have in my own life (although it is disheartening to know that I’m the same age as the parents in the book!).
Keira Blake and Dante DeAngelis in IF WE NEVER MET are just what I’ve come to expect from Freethy. Both are at a crossroads in their lives. Dante is a famous baseball pitcher in town to rehab from surgery under the radar. Keira is running herself ragged trying to take care of everyone around her as her girlfriends are finding their soulmates and marrying off.
Stir in a meet-cute by mistake, a touch of mystery and a spoiled brat and you will fall deep into Keira’s and Dante’s chapter in the Whisper Lake series. No need to read the first four books in advance — but you’ll enjoy them as well!
Barbara Freethy’s latest novel on Whisper Lake series is an absolutely superb novel! I just read it in one go, from the moment Dante and keira meet to the last page it’s simply wonderful. Dante and Keira clicked from the moment Keira mistook Dante for her blind date, they had so much of chemistry it was burning the pages. Dante is a professional Baseball player who is in Whisper Lake to rehab from an injury and Keira is Feisty loyal and an independent woman who loves and takes care of her mum who has recovered from a major accident. Ms. Freethy has written a well developed story with likeable characters. This book also saw previous characters of whisper Lake coming in as they are friends of Keira. This book is highly recommended if you’re looking for a weekend or a beach read.
This book revolves around family, relationships and a bit of intrigue
This was a great addition to the Whisper Lake series and did not disappoint. Main characters Kiera and Dante are such lovable characters and just belong together. Kiera goes on a blind date to try to find her “plus one” for a wedding she is attending for her best friend. She is meeting Danny and sees a man by himself and sits down. Asks if he is Danny and he misheard her and says yes. They get to talking and Kiera finally realizes her mistake and finds Danny who disappoints, but Dante seeing her having a hard time ‘saves” her from the Boring Danny. Kiera and Dante meet up here and there and sparks fly. Kiera is somewhat in a rut, doesn’t know what she wants to do with her life. She is working as a part time designer, part time realtor and part time boutique owner, she is also caring for her mom who had a head injury. Her love is designing. She designed a dress for the red carpet for her country singer friend which dress was seen by other famous stars. Dante is a profession Major League Baseball pitcher who injured his shoulder and is in Whisper Lake for therapy. Great story, kept me intrigued. Had some mystery, lots of romance. Cannot wait for the next book. As always Barbara does not disappoint!! Five stars from me.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review.
Every time I open up a new book from the Whisper Lake series, I feel like I’m returning to a group of friends I’ve known my whole life and to a town I’d love to call home.
‘If We Never Met’ is filled with characters so very believable and who deal with problems that are so real. The friendship between the four best girlfriends is endearing and the love they share with the men in their lives is so special. The new story about Keira Blake and Dante DeAngelis is no exception. From the first moment, when Keira accidentally sat beside the wrong guy on her date, to the very end when Keira is finally able to choose the path for her future that is so absolutely perfect for her and Dante, I found myself laughing in delight, groaning in despair and even crying a few happy tears at the end as their lives grew together and finally merged together.
Barbara Freethy provides romance, drama, and even a little intrigue in this series, all wrapped up in the beautiful setting of Whisper Lake.
If We Never Met is book 5 in the Whisper Lake series by Barbara Freethy and am loving this series!
Dante DeAngelis , professional baseball pitcher is injured and comes to rehab his arm at the new state of the art clinic in Whisper Lake and hopes to stay under the radar. When out one evening a beautiful, woman mistakes him for her blind date and plays along because it’s been a long time since someone sees him as a person and not a celebrity.
Keira Blake is the last remaining single girl in her group of friends so they set her up on a blind date, that she has low expectation of find her plus one for her friend’s wedding. What she finds is a handsome, athletic, interesting man!
When their identities are revealed, problems arise, sparks ignite, paparazzi shows up, finding the right road to the future, laughter, falling in love and so much more!
Keira has long taken care of everyone and stays extremely busy trying to fit everything in each day. When her friends encourage her to bring a plus one to a wedding, she turns to a dating app. That's how she meets Dante, only he isn't her date! They are attracted to each other and have a hard time staying apart. Circumstances keep bringing them together despite Keira's best effort to steer clear of him. They fall hard and fast for each other but don't think their attraction can go past his brief stay in Whisper Lake. There is also a bit of a mystery around an old acquaintance of her mom's who has moved to town and Dante helps her get to the truth but not before Keira is in danger and Dante saves her. Great addition to the Whisper Lake series! I received an ARC an am voluntarily leaving my review.
If We Never Met is the fifth book in the Whisper Lake series, but it can be read as a standalone. Keira is busy running her mothers real estate business, her own shop, designing dresses, and taking care of her mother. Dante is a star baseball player, in Whisper Lake to rehab an injury. After meeting unexpectedly, the pair are drawn to one another.
Both Dante and Keira have fears they need to face in order to face their future. Not only that, they have to deal with Dante’s semi-girlfriend stirring up trouble, as well as a mystery involving a man who arrives in town that knows Keira’s mother. It’s a bumpy, yet enjoyable, ride as the pair navigate their newfound relationship.
While this book wasn’t my favorite of the series, it’s still a great addition to it. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next in Whisper Lake.
Welcome back to Whisper Lake! Catch up with old friends and meet some new ones ! Dante is only here for a short time, a professional baseball player rehabbing from an injury. Kiera is Whisper Lake born and breed ! These two live totally different live styles… so why can’t they stay away from each other ! Told in true Freethy Form with fantastic characters and a wonderful story that keeps you turning the pages way past your bedtime ! Fans of this author will devour thus book and if you haven’t read anything by this author… you are missing out !!!
Once again I want to pack my bags & move to the fictional town of Whisper Lake. Barbara Freethy has created a bunch of amazing characters in this series, and this 5th book featuring Keira & Dante is no exception. Hometown girl Keira juggles her real estate business, boutique ownership, fledgling design business & taking care of her mom. Pro baseball player Dante comes to Whisper Lake to rehab his shoulder after surgery, wondering if he’ll ever play again & hoping a life without baseball does not become a reality. These two meet on one of Dante’s first night’s in town, when Keira mistakes him for her blind date. They realize their mistake pretty quickly, but their chemistry is undeniable. Throw in a bunch of secondary characters, a few plot twists and Barbara’s great writing, and you have another great book in this series. I think you’ll enjoy their path to their happily ever after.
My mom and I started reading Barbara Freethy books years ago when one of us found one of her books in a used book store. We were hooked after that. I say if you’re not reading Barbara Freethy books then what are you waiting for? I’m such a fan I have a blanket and Pillow from her Callaway series.I also have her adult coloring books,a journal and a book bag. I enjoy them all. Kiera Blake doesn’t have a date to a wedding so she agrees to a blind date and is presently surprised when she first sees her date. She’s the last single girl in her friends group. Will the blind date end up with a love connection?Read the book to find out.
A case of mistaken identity has never turned out so right!
Right guy, wrong time. Kiera has given up a lot. She left New York and her design career to return to Whisper Lake to take care of her mother and her mother’s business after she has an accident. Kiera has no time for herself, between her mom’s business and her own but decides to go on a blind dad to get a plus one for Hanna’s upcoming wedding.
Dante is in Whisper Lake to rehab from a shoulder injury. While having dinner, Kiera mistakes him for her blind date. Romance, friendship, and suspense ensue but with the clock running down what will the future bring?
In my opinion, this book is one of the best of the Whisper Lake series! A mixture of romance for more than one couple, suspense for more than one person, and updates on the Whisper Lake community. This book keeps you on your toes!
Always good about entwining her books around solid, real life, issues, this book does not disappoint. Old loves, Hollywood influencers, retribution, emotional 'spin', and attempted murder are all in play in this latest novel by Ms. Freethy. Ultimately, love is the winner.
A very enjoyable read. I can't wait for the next book!
Ms. Freethy has done it again. If We Never Met is the perfect mix of romance and suspense. I thought this book was going to be just romance, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the author’s talent for writing suspense found its way into the book. I have loved reading Barbara Freethy’s books and was delighted to find that she didn’t abandon her talent for writing suspense books for the romance genre.
If We Never Met is the perfect book in which to lose yourself for a few hours. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it and all of Barbara Freethy’s books.
Keira mistakes recuperating baseball star Dante for her blind date and begins a whirlwind romance with the sexy star pitcher. It's hard to make this trope unique but Ms. Freethy makes it fresh. I really liked reading how these two people from very different worlds came together. Dante needed someone home grown and down to earth in his life.
3rd person POV. 1 out of 5 for spice. Very enjoyable.
I love Whisper Lake and I love the stories from Whisper Lake and this latest addition is every bit as good as the rest of them! A case of mistaken identity, secrets, lies, blackmail, mystery, friendship, a wedding and love and romance, this story has it all. This grabbed me from the very first chapter as we joined Keira in her story with Dante. It’s a hot and fiery story and their chemistry is off the charts but will they get their hea? Pick this up and find out , you will not be disappointed!
Really love this series just as much as the Callaways!!! These characters feel like good friends, and I'm really sad when the books end, I always wish that they were longer! I love that in each book characters from previous books make an appearance... It's like you're catching up with old friends 😍 you'll love this story, it has some twists and turns that are surprising!
I loved the instant chemistry between Keira and Dante. What a fun way to meet. I also love that Barbara always adds a little suspense and drama to her romance stories. It adds a depth and excitement. The characters were well developed and the story line kept me interested. Another great addition to Whisper Lake!
This book was amazing! I loved the chemistry between Keira and Dante. They way they meet us adorable! I always think the series can never get better but it does! Can’t wait for the next one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
