The essence of the book: Beauty sells. New ideas: N/A.

I am not an ideal reader for this book because of in-depth awareness about product research and how brand designers and architects go about creating or re-inventing iconic brands that resist the test of time. The book provides a lot of anecdotal after-the-fact examples of how different companies boosted their brands, but it doesn't go deep enough to discuss intention, dilemmas, strategies, and options that business leaders considered when making certain choices. The book would benefit significantly if the first-person interviews were included in the research.

This book, however, is a good read for someone new to branding, or a CPG, luxury and lifestyle startup founder. It's an easy and quick read and it will motivate readers to build more aesthetic brands and businesses, which may support the longevity and sustainability of their business.

Forget about focusing only on the core strength of your business. Aesthetics matters. Brown was the Chairman of LVMH North America. So she knows luxury.

1. In future robots will take all the routine jobs. Only those requiring the human touch, and social connection will survive.

2. You can either sell stuff or sell experiences. Those who sell stuff will be replaced/bought over by Amazon (that’s why Malls are closing and Toys R Us is bankrupt); on the other hand, those who sells experience will thrive. (Try buying a hair cut or childcare on Amazon)

3. The decor of the retail outlet, the uniform and behaviour of the staff, the packaging are all important for the experience. The story behind the brand and the history completes the picture. So Louis Vuitton does not sell bags to us; it sells the inspiration of a good life to us.

4. Packaging does not always needs to be luxurious. For environmentally friendly brands it can be simple and made from recycled material. An investment bank can be traditional with fancy marble buildings, ancient paintings and classic wooden furniture, or simple and straight forward. Different styles will get different patrons and we can all do well in our niche.

5. Get your own style and express yourself. Ask your friends for opinion. Always try to look good and never sloppy.

6. Wines taste different depending on the glass (material, thickness, shape), and air pressure, the bottle, the cork.

I really enjoy this book which is a totally different kind of business book. Very refreshing indeed.

Simple in a good way book on a rather complicated subject - aesthetic in business and personal context. Every bit of experience with any product or service is taking part in the journey and impacting it, so you’d better work on that!
I loved the idea of aesthetic codes - personal/professional, and the process of working on these muscles by exploring our innate abilities to perceive and create beauty. I am left with light and pleasant feeling after reading the book and with some inspiration to develop (or better to say bring to life) my own sense of beauty.

"Dive into your archives. The deeper your heritage, the more you have to work with, of course. For established companies, looking back into archives, as fashion houses often do, can be an eye-opening experience. This is an immersion into not just how your products historically were made and marketed but why they were made and marketed that way, how their expressions were influenced by the times, and, above all how they evolved through history" (67).

"Regardless of what business you're in, I would advise you--as I do all businesspeople--to bring as much of yourself--your values, your personality, your style, and even your quirks--into the equation as possible" (72).

Leads Well, Follows Poorly

I read this with great excitement. The premise is original, important and fits what I believe to be an enormous gap in our understanding of business, products, services, and design. The book starts out very well and the first section is just what I had hoped for and will certainly use. The rest of the book starts to fall apart with what I think is poor editing, lousy organization, and a loss of focus over what the book was intended to do. Chapters seem stuck on as if there was a section of the course (which the book is based on) that featured an idea that the author felt needed to go into the book. The last two sections are a mish-mash of ideas, formatting, and recommendations that were hard to follow and didn’t offer me much to use. This would have been far better as a Harvard Business Review article than a book.

This book is more of a 2.5 but I rounded up. This is a business book about using what the author (a former LVMH executive) calls “aesthetic intelligence” to build and strengthen a brand/product. I feel like it could be summed up in one sentence: Delight your customers by creating intentional, multisensory experiences with your brand. The rest reads like a book written by someone who wants to be a tastemaker but doesn’t have the clout, so they wrote a business book instead.

Кому читати? Маркетологам, дизайнерам та власникам бізнесу. Можна щось для себе взяти з прикладів успішних маркетингових проєктів, пов'язаних з естетичною складовою. Наприклад, як повернути покупців з онлайну в офлайн? Подарувати їм максимум емоцій, починаючи з дизайну вашого магазину/кав'ярні і т.д., закінчуючи гарним пакуванням.
Але потрібну інформацію треба визбирати з купи води, бо книжку можна було скоротити вдвічі і назвати якось менш претензійно. Бо що таке естетичний інтелект? Немає такого, а є просто прагнення робити щось красиве і кожен бренд це робить по-своєму, залучаючи свою цільову аудиторію. Для кожного естетика своя, але ви маєте приділяти увагу цій стороні справи.
Повторюсь: як збірка цікавих кейсів - так. Не більше.

One of the most important books I’ve read

I’ve wanted to read this for a while and am so glad I did. I devoured it in two days and now am looking at ways to improve the aesthetics of every corner of my life. For me, aesthetics are important and this book provides the tools to harness that to improve my interior design, business and wardrobe.

As someone building a brand, I was happy to find that I’m on the right path, already weaving the five senses into my vision—from tactile packaging to a curated playlist that sets the mood. Brown’s emphasis on sensory depth validated my instincts, reinforcing the power of a cohesive aesthetic identity. Yet, I was also a bit sad that the book didn’t spark any epiphany moments for me. While it’s rich with insights and examples, it felt more like a confirmation of what I’d already learned from other sources (Peter Moore and working hands on with a creative team), rather than a source of groundbreaking revelation. Still, *Aesthetic Intelligence* is a worthy read for anyone seeking to refine their sensory lens and create something enduringly beautiful.

Если товар затрагивает сразу несколько органов чувств, мы быстрее попадаем под его влияние. Для эффекта стоит затрагивать хотя бы 3 органа чувств

Здесь могут работать и совсем простые ассоциации: мыло связано с расслаблением, кашемир — с комфортом и уютом, классическая музыка — со спокойствием, а мороженое — с детским восторгом.

Приятные эмоции — способствуют снижению давления, укрепляют иммунитет, даже повышают нашу продуктивность. Эти эмоции возникают, в частности, благодаря ярким цветам, приятным звукам, гармонии симметрии [3]. Максимального успеха достигают те торговые точки, в которых есть возможность следовать фундаментальному правилу и влиять на пять человеческих чувств. Разобравшись, как работают по отдельности осязание, обоняние, вкус, зрение и слух, как они взаимодействуют, а также какие возможности имеют маркетологи для возбуждения (или подавления) каждого из них, можно научиться эффективно использовать язык чувств и за счет этого создавать устойчивое конкурентное преимущество для компании.

ассоциации с едой (к примеру, цветок нектарина, перечный базилик, белый тимьян); упаковка элегантная и без лишних деталей, а логотип обманчиво простой; красивая коробка перевязывается роскошной репсовой лентой и укладывается в нежно- желтый бумажный пакет.

наша к ним восприимчивость существенно снижается. Чарльз Спенс, профессор экспериментальной психологии Оксфордского университета, связывает этот феномен сразу с несколькими факторами: низким давлением, крайне малой влажностью, высоким уровнем шума. На высоте 10 000 метров обоняние и способность различать вкус серьезно подводят нас, считает Расс Браун, директор службы организации питания и розничной торговли American Airlines. предпочитают здоровую еду. «Громкая музыка возбуждает, вызывает прилив энергии, вынуждает игнорировать запреты и позволять себе излишества, — объясняет Дипаян Бисвас,
профессор бизнеса и маркетинга из Университета Южной Флориды. — Приглушенные звуки помогают расслабиться, действовать более осознанно, а потому мы скорее выберем полезные блюда»

Код бренда — это все, что выделяет вашу продукцию на фоне конкурентов. Это своего рода маркеры — к примеру, стеганая кожа Chanel или шрифт в названии газеты New York Times — или самые заметные и узнаваемые элементы продукции компании . ДНК бренда, которая может
включать и нематериальные элементы, например его историю или социальную миссию. Код бренда долго формируется, а однажды принятый, остается неизменным.

Разгадать код - Сенсорные сигналы и эмоциональные триггеры вашего бренда
Коды — это ясные и узнаваемые отличитель-
ные черты, или маркеры, бренда, которые заключают в себе его философию и эстетические принципы. Это не всегда то же самое, что и символы, хотя одним из важных кодов может оказаться удачный логотип. Коды бренда — это и не то же самое, что его ДНК, в которую обычно включаются элементы вроде истории, ценностей и социальной роли («миссии»). ДНК скорее концептуальная вещь, чем сенсорная. Коды бренда — это не то же самое, что и продаваемые под этой торговой маркой товары или услуги, однако в восприятии потребителей именно коды увязываются с идеями, воспоминаниями, эмоциями, вызываемыми этими товарами, а потому делают продукцию все более привлекательной.Коды бренда можно увидеть, почувствовать, услышать, даже ощутить в пространстве. Они могут быть частью продукта или тесно с ним ассоциироваться. Яркие слоганы легко вызывают эмоциональный отклик, стимулируя желание приобрести этот товар.
Коды возникают и эволюционируют естественным путем, постепенно. Как правило, рождаются они как продолжение личности владельца компании, на основе его принципов и личных вкусов. Коды бренда не создаются специально —
по сути, это побочный продукт творчества

Именно вы, со всей совокупностью убеждений и вкусов, и формируете ценности вашей компании, даете ей уникальный голос.

Принятие пищи способствует либо развитию, либо деградации вкуса.

Упражнения на развитие эстетического интеллекта:
Не исключено, что вы часто едите вне дома — но замечаете ли окружающую обстановку в кафе или ресторане? Своим гарвардским студен-там я дала задание написать обзор ресторана и впечатлений
от обеда или ужина таким образом, чтобы читатель, который, возможно, вообще никогда не бывал там, мог хорошо представить себе это место. Я просила сосредоточиться на наиболее выразительных элементах и писать как можно более конкретно.
я просила передавать ощущения с помощью визуальных инструментов, возможно, даже подбирая специальный шрифт, который соответствовал бы обстановке описываемого места, или включив фото ресторана в наиболее выгодном ракурсе (к примеру, очередь у входа, дизайн обеденного зала или сами блюда). Я просила студентов (и вас призываю) применять этот подход, отмечать важные детали не только вербально и анализировать взаимное влияние разных ощущений.

Когда мы полностью погружены в какое-то дело — скажем, занимаемся йогой, бегаем или рассматриваем книжные полки в магазине, — мы сконцентрированы на текущем моменте, то есть настроены на происходящее. В том, что касается еды, такая настроенность проявляется через способность различать отдельные вкусовые ноты в сложном блюде, осознавать, как вкус вина влияет на восприятие ароматов еды, как окружающая обстановка — скажем, свет, сервировка или музыка — сказывается на общем впечатлении. В контексте личного стиля и моды настроенность проявляется в способности обращать внимание на то, как вы чувствуете себя в одежде разных направлений, цветов, из непохожих тканей, отличающихся силуэтов.

Не исключено, что друзья подскажут
решения, которые будут на вас выигрышно смотреться и о которых вы даже не думали. Какие-то из их советов точно не подойдут и даже не понравятся, но в этом нет ничего страшного.
В магазинах можно примерять даже то, что, на ваш взгляд, выглядит почти уродливо; при этом отмечайте и запоминайте, какие цвета и текстуры вам несимпатичны, обращайте внимание на силуэт, форму, длину и ширину. Постепенно научитесь
замечать, что в мире существует много разнообразных стилей брюк и покроев рукава, вариантов длины и вообще всяких фасонов. Видите ли вы логику в том, как формируется стопка отобранных вещей? А что попадает в группу совершенно неприглянувшихся? И еще важное замечание: хороши ли вы в тех вещах, которые вам по вкусу? Можете объяснить, почему именно они показались подходящими? Отвечая на эти вопросы,
вы постепенно определите собственный стиль.

Интерпретация ощущений — основа для развития вкуса и формирования личного стиля. толкование вкусов других — основа для работы в области дизайна, брендинга, мерчандайзинга, маркетинга и организации коммуникаций

1) вспомните "нечто значимое, что вы купили" и подумать, почему именно оно имеет ценность
2) определить "занозы", вещи когда-то купленные и регулярно используемые, но не доставляющие удовольствия" : кроссы найк маленького размера, слишком тугие топы-лифы
3) некто современный или живший раньше, чьему стилю хочется подражать!

На полках
- ограничить выбор *убрать лишнее без очевидных конкурентных преимуществ утп
- помочь человеку прочувствовать эмоции от товара
- удостовериться, что все разумно категоризировано : Деление должно выстраиваться в контексте человеческих эмоций, а не на основе характеристик товаров. К примеру, в отделе
ароматизаторов и отдушек покупатели активнее реагируют не на привычное и вполне рациональное распределение по цене, химическому составу или стране производства, а на изображения продукции и описание связанных с ней эмоций (романтический запах, сексуальный, чистый).
- потребители будет выбирать товары с большим удовольствием, если им придется принимать всё более сложные решения
- часто менять ассортимент (чтобы пушить людей к покупке тк продукт не задерживается) и сокращать выбор, упрощать людям жизнь

Важно не терять чувства юмора, ведь оно
помогает расслабиться, стимулирует общение, позволяет донести многие важные идеи, причем даже в контексте сложного дизайнерского решения. Джонатан Адлер построил на этом принципе серьезный бизнес и активно использует

- составить Эмоциональную карту: «Как я хочу чувствовать себя в каждой из комнат?» и «Как я собираюсь использовать это помещение?».

Когда пришло время заняться отделкой дома, Ортега посоветовал подойти к этому проекту как к съемке фильма. Мы обсуждали примерно те же вопросы, которые задавал бы продюсер. Для начала поговорили, кто будет главным героем или рассказчиком в комнате. Эмоциональная карта имеет три важных преимущества: 1) она заставляет принимать решения и делать выбор — в частности, определять, какие элементы оставить,а какие нет; 2) вам приходится думать и экспериментировать
с расположением и сочетанием элементов и выбирать, как с их помощью рассказать связную историю; 3) эта платформа помогает увязать визуальные и прочие элементы с чувствами,
которые вы хотите вызвать у аудитории.

«Краткое описание концепции продукта», или творческий бриф, — наиболее распространенный формат подачи ключевой информации — имеет не меньшее значение, чем сам товар или услуга. Этот документ может быть руководством для авторов текстов, художников, дизайнеров, мерчандайзеров и всех остальных, кто занят творческой стороной кураторского сопровождения продукта. В брифе определяется целевая аудитория и в деталях описывается план работы с ней. Содержание и принципы концепции должны быть понятны всем вовлеченным сторонам: сотрудники компании обязаны знать, как им пользоваться, а результат этой работы призван радовать потребителей. Другими словами, концепция продукта — это инструкция, которая применяется внутри компании ради достижения целей за ее пределами.

Ценность слов
Главная ценность эстетической концепции — ее конкретность, позволяющая донести до аудитории вашу цель, наполнить продукт смыслом, вызвать яркие положительные эмоции. Эстетическая концепция дает команде возможность понимать ваше видение и с достаточной точностью воспроизводить его и даже усиливать. Конкретные формулировки позволяют не только ясно выразить мысль, но и создать необычные, более сильные и запоминающиеся ассоциации с продуктом или услугой. Вот почему так важны слова, которые вы используете для выражения образа своего бренда или продукта. Расплывчатые описания не годятся. This book resonated with me on a personal level. It’s an exploration of why beautiful things move us—and how that power can be harnessed in business, for better or worse. It’s a 3 star though because it could have been more dense and profound. So it had a good start that fell flat towards 3/4 of the way.

Regardless, on the bright side… it was not a dry business framework, but a meditation on something I already felt but couldn’t articulate. The idea that beauty is a discipline. That aesthetics isn’t decoration, it’s communication. And that the attention we pay to small details says everything about how much we care.

A Double-Edged Sword

Aesthetic intelligence is a superpower. But like all superpowers, it cuts both ways.

Pauline Brown, former Chairman of LVMH North America, shows how companies use aesthetics to create value—sensory experiences that delight customers and build lasting brands. But she also shows the dark side: companies weaponizing aesthetics to deceive.

Take Kellogg. They wanted to create an “aesthetic of health” around Frosted Mini-Wheats—a sugary, carb-heavy cereal. They ran ads claiming the cereal increased children’s attention spans by 20 percent. The FTC eventually exposed them: the studies didn’t support even minimal claims. Half the children in Kellogg’s own study showed no improvement at all.

"In the long run, true aesthetic value can only be built on pure intentions and defensible actions."

Kind bars play a similar game, more cleverly. Brown doesn’t believe they’re much healthier than other snack bars—they’re still loaded with sugar. But they associate themselves with words like “pure” and “whole,” packaging that whispers health even when the nutrition label doesn’t.

This is the shadow side of aesthetic intelligence: beautifying something to mislead. It works—until it doesn’t. And when it collapses, it takes the brand’s integrity with it.

Beauty as Discipline

But the heart of the book isn’t about deception. It’s about the opposite: the discipline of making things beautiful because you care.

One line stuck with me:

"The more you learn about what makes something good, the more you appreciate it, even if it is not to your personal taste."

This reframes aesthetics entirely. It’s not about personal preference—it’s about understanding quality. You can dislike Bordeaux wine and still learn to tell a good one from a bad one. Aesthetic intelligence is a skill that can be developed. It requires attention, study, and practice.

Steve Jobs and the Ugly Gadget Problem

Brown discusses research showing that for many consumers, their ugliest possessions were their tech gadgets. Think about that. The devices we use most—the things we touch constantly—were the least beautiful objects in people’s lives.

Steve Jobs understood this before anyone else. In one of his speeches, he pointed out how much money the automobile industry had invested in making cars beautiful—pieces of sculpted metal with fine detailing. But tech? For years, no one cared. Gadgets were functional, not beautiful.

Apple changed that. Jobs obsessed over details that most people would never consciously notice—the curve of a corner, the weight of a click, the typography on a box you’d throw away. He understood that beauty wasn’t superficial. It was the signal that someone cared.

Why This Resonates With Me

I run a podcast and produce social media content, and I find myself constantly obsessing over small details. The edge of a box—is it too sharp? Let’s round it. The spacing between text on a reel—is it just functional, or is it visually pleasing? Subtitles don’t just need to be readable; they need to be beautiful.

I even tell my team: when you submit a report, beautify it. Add colors. Add formatting. Structure the document so it’s aesthetically pleasing. Not because the information changes—but because how we present things reflects how much we care about them.

This book gave me language for something I already practiced instinctively.

The Verdict

Read this book if you’ve ever felt that beauty matters but couldn’t explain why it matters in business. Brown makes the case that aesthetics isn’t a nice-to-have—it’s a competitive advantage, a communication tool, and a reflection of intention.

But read it with your eyes open. Aesthetic intelligence can delight, and it can deceive. The difference is whether the beauty points toward something true or papers over something hollow. In the long run, only the former endures.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The subtitle says "how to boost it", but the book is really just "why to boost it". If you want to read this book, it's likely because you have some inclination that aesthetics are important in business or otherwise. If so, then you already have what this book seeks to give you, through a series of anecdotes. Malcolm Gladwell might offer that alongside some data, surprising A/B testing or such, but that's not the kind of intelligence you'll find here. The author says aesthetics are all about the emotional and sensory experiences people have, and that's all she offers. She saw some great packaging one time. It felt nice. She looked the smell. It evoked something. The company was successful. Was the expensive packaging a result of the success or the cause of it? Hush, now. I worked for (insert 30th name drop here). The book may or may not just be a successful wealthy businesswoman who had immense opportunity her entire career attempting to spin a meritocratic narrative by sculpting a conveniently unmeasurable and unfalsifiable form of genius out of what would otherwise be a commonplace observation that people like enjoyable sensory experiences.

Lastly, I'm not one to judge a book by its cover, but here I think it should be noted that this book apparently couldn't convince its own publisher to spring for, say, a nicer finish on the sleeve, so that's their review, too, I guess.

This book comes off as a book written for the sake of having a book written. Nothing of substance is actually in this book. The majority of the claims are either pretty common sense or are backed up by some faulty logic. It really seems like Brown will make a claim, and try to find whatever evidence there is to back up her claim.

For example, she makes the claim how Ulta Beauty (ULTA) changed their persona from a traditional sense of beauty to everyone is beautiful. Because of that, their stock price went up 300%. Is that the only reason why their stock price went up....? It's a lot more complicated than just that. This is what I mean by cherry picked evidence, and this books has a bunch of it.

One example of a common sense claim is her outlook on the future. Brown believes corporate social responsibility and environmentalism will be a bigger focus. The ESGU, the largest social responsible ETF, was created 4 years ago. CSR-based companies like Everlane were founded 10 years ago and has seen popularity in the last 7-8 years. Everlane was even mentioned earlier in the book. Her outlook is a bit late on the nose...

Aesthetic intelligence: in the personal, there are profits. That’s the only compelling reason to go into a physical store at this point. The influence of sound on our senses, the variety of influences on taste buds etc, quite fascinating. How each sense impacts your customer experience. The “code” a brand produces. Harley Davidson as an example. Sticking to the principles of your brand and personality. When it goes bad, juul. Understanding your customer by being a customer. The impact style has on perception. Changing your style requires you to experience clothes sensorially. Get rid of an abundance of choice. Consider how you want the packaging to look when creating your item. The brands that endure in modern times will provide purpose. Aesthetics matter and aesthetics business are built and driven by those with aesthetic intelligence. People are born with for more AE Intelligence than they realize but must practice and if applied well, they strengthen and potentially transform your business. I liked it a lot, discusses the aesthetics of your business and how much that impacts the overall success and longevity.

The book starts off strong with solid case studies and compelling statistics, providing a clear understanding of how aesthetic intelligence shapes both personal and professional success. Pauline Brown expertly explains how the five senses play into building a full-bodied sensory experience, showing how design goes beyond visuals to engage all aspects of perception. I particularly appreciated her point about aesthetic codes, which help individuals cultivate their personal and professional selves with intention and style.

However, despite its promising foundation, the book loses momentum toward the end, lacking the same clarity and depth in its conclusion as it does in the earlier chapters.

A solid 3.5 star read, but I think your mileage may vary. If you have a marketing background, you may feel that a decent amount of the book deals with branding and retail strategy that's familiar.
While Brown draws from a lot of examples, her background is in high-end products, and I think that shows for better and for ill. Sometimes the takeaways are not really applicable to say, small business or non-profits.

I quite liked the closing of the book, where she gave some interesting prognostications.

Industrial age is officially gone. Now every products should tell its story. It should reflect on branding, company culture and employees., etc. However,many B2B companies still focus on product itself or consumers always find something cheap because they assume branding means expensive.
Pauline is a good role to tell everyone why AI is new trend for a company. And how it effect revenue.
Though I hope she can tell more example how this concept use on industry countries/companies.
There are too many retail/ FMCG example in this book.

Понимаю, что у меня могла взыграть проф маркетинговая деформация, но нет, все же считаю, что заявленная тема может и должна раскрыться глубже (коль уж взялся), а это просто бумагомарательство

Very important book for every business and brand. Aesthetics - i.e. design, looks, smell, appearance, taste an touch are all factors influencing our impressions and decisions unconsciously and subconsciously.
If we neglect aesthetics we can fail without even understanding why.
In this book the author gives practical examples and many cases on how to make AI your armour and use it to the advantage of your enterprise.

The book is not well structured. (Even if it seems like that). A lot of personal author’s opinion. It could interesting for the reader if the author recommends himself as an interesting person. But I haven’t no empathy to this author. That’s why her thoughts and tastes are not interesting to me. F.e. she talks about personal style (3 or 5 pages), but the same size is text about her style. Ok, how it will help me? Too many unstructured examples about different businesses. Nothing to remember.

Very mind expanding for me. Possibly the same intellectual and spiritual tyrany that sparked the hippy movement in the 60 is coming back in a new emphasis on the sensual.

"Aesthtics connects us to our humanity". We need more of that for sure.

"REM - Relationships, Experience and Memories" these are the new standards for a rich and satisfying life.

A lot of practical wisdom is packed into this book.

Disclaimer: read this for work so it was NOT for my own enjoyment. Lots of real life examples used which was nice, but hard to actually apply the material because very little of the book was exercises or ideas on how to implement what was read as a business.
The concept of aesthetics is important to understand, but for those who get it, this book is mostly for ideas and resources where to look for them.

Ця книга, це абсолютно не те, що я очікувала, прочитавши назву. Це абсолютно унікальний досвід авторки, який не є релевантним для інших. З назви я очікувала отримати якісь практичні поради, але, на жаль так не відбулося. Досвід, перемішаний з купою прикладів (часто дуже поверхневих). Чи я б її комусь радила? Швидше ні.
