This was pretty cute. I love how Uruka is so outgoing, and yet awkward in love. I also love how supportive Asumi, Rizu and Fumino are. Kirisu Sensi was also pretty cool in this one, seeing how she truly cares about her students. There are four more endings now :)

Exams ended and Nariyuki got a sudden confession from Uruka. As everybody unwinds, graduation looms and Uruka is about to leave Japan. How will Nariyuki respond and how will things shake out in this particular ending? Hearts will be broken and boobs will be mashed!

And so we enter endgame for We Never Learn, a series that I think has always believed it was funnier than it typically is and has stayed on my reading list by virtue of being ‘good enough’.

I won’t belabour the meat of this volume, which is basically the ‘Uruka path’ of the ending, instead using this review to tackle whether or not I think this is a good idea. And the answer is a definitive ‘maybe’.

On the one hand, it’s nice to see everybody’s favourite getting their chance so the audience is satisfied, no matter their ship. On the other, it feels a little cheap and robs the story of some gravitas. Sometimes having to deal with disappointment is part of life - I’m still stinging over the end of Today’s Cerberus, but I don’t love it any less.

The whole moment with the fireworks was made to be a big ‘who was it?’ moment, but unless you’re literally one of the best Agatha Christie books ever written you can’t just let it be all of them in turn and have it feel satisfying.

Part of the problem is that, despite being Uruka focused, a lot of time is spent on the other girls dealing with the rejection and Nariyuki wrestling with his feelings and it all culminates in little more than a kiss (admittedly a pretty good one) and a time jump. Relationships can be interesting, dammit.

Look, Quintessential Quintuplets pulled basically the same thing this series is doing, but that series remains my gold standard for harems because it never wavered from what the end goal of its mystery actually was. Yes, it has escape hatches built in, in case you like a different pairing, but it concludes definitively.

Despite my misgivings, I’m not going to outright say this is the wrong way to do an ending, just a different one that I personally see flaws in. We certainly have a few more volumes to test that premise. If the mangaka has any sense he’s holding onto the Mafuyu route until the very end, given that character’s ridiculous popularity*.

3 stars - see? It’s ‘good enough’. This story has occasionally done serious really well, but things feel a little cramped and a little rushed for this first ending story. I guess we’ll see how the other four kicks at the can go.

*I admit that if this series has one chance of making me literally die laughing it would be by not having a Mafuyu route whatsoever and giving it to Nariyuki’s little sister instead (note: do NOT do this book, incest bad).

Middle-of-the-road, default, fairly immature route. Feels like it exists to serve subgenre conventions more than anything. Tsutsui is a better character writer than this and I'm happy he had the opportunity to write alternate routes for other characters.

Oh how splendidly wonderful! Get out the Kleenex, my friends!

So, Uruka has confessed to Yuiga. Now, the whole gang is on a ski trip, Kirisu-Sensei included. Yuiga wants to get Uruka alone so they can talk. She seems to be avoiding him, and the rest of the group keep running off with Yuiga. Then he gets sick, and the girls take turns nursing Yuiga. He gets to rest his head in the laps of a couple really cute girls. At one point, it seems Fumino is going to ______ Yuiga, but she gets caught by the others. Later, after Yuiga recovers a bit, everyone goes to an aquarium. Eventually, it's time to graduate! Yuiga learns that Uruka has to leave for America before the graduation ceremony. Uruka is distraught, and Yuiga is unsettled. Pacing in the hall, first Rizu comes to him, affirms her love for Yuiga, then tells him to search his feelings in regards to Uruka. She kisses him on the cheek, and then Fumino comes to Yuiga, and also encourages him to be true to his own heart before it's too late. So, as Rizu and Fumino distract the Senseis, Yuiga hurriedly heads for the airport, desperately hoping to catch Uruka before she boards her flight. Everything seems to be trying to stop Yuiga - traffic, the weather, delayed trains... until Kirisu-Sensei appears, almost as if she had been summoned (which she was, by Rizu and Fumino), and she tries to race Yuiga to the airport, while also telling him to be true to his own heart. Then, they get caught in traffic deadlock, due to trains being delayed from the storm. So Yuiga takes off on foot, but the airport is 7 miles away! As he runs in the rain, he runs right into Asumi, who also seems to have been mysteriously summoned (which she was, by Kirisu-Sensei), so she and Yuiga hop on her scooter, and off they go. Uruka meanwhile is sitting alone in the airport, dearly wishing she could see Yuiga one last time. She voices that desire, and looks up, to see Yuiga himself standing before her. He's soaking wet, disheveled, dirty, and out of breath. Even so, to Uruka, Yuiga has never looked more handsome. He regains his composure, and boldly declares his love to Uruka. She starts sobbing, out of extreme joy. The two young lovers-to-be then embrace, then ______! As we close out the volume, we flash forward a few years. Yuiga, Rizu, and Fumino are all in college, as is Asumi. Mizuki is now in high school. Everyone, including Kirisu-Sensei, her sister Miharu, Rizu's rival/supporter Sawako, and Yuiga's friends Kobayashi and Omori have gathered at Rizu's family's restaurant for a welcome home party for Uruka. After she arrives, she and Yuiga go for a walk, and Yuiga, who's gotten a apprenticeship at a renowned jewelry maker, grabs Uruka's hand, and puts a ring on her finger, a ring he himself made. Just as the fireworks from the festival start going off overhead, Yuiga asks Uruka for her answer, and filled with emotions, says... Ah, but that would be telling, wouldn't it? If you want to find out, then you will just have to read this volume! I thought this might be the final volume, but there's a small note that implies this is 1 of 5 endings (?!?!?!), so I gather we will see more story, as this immensely popular manga is probably going to be dragged out solely for the sake of profit (and maybe for fan service, as well), so I doubt we've seen the last of our friends. Also, I STILL want to see the teased We Never Learn/Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs crossover!!! All in all, this is one of the most enjoyable, humorous, and emotionally endearing manga series I've ever read. I'm really going to miss it once it really is over.

Okay, I read the author introduction for this one and apparently this is only one of multiple endings for this series. I think... Either way, I like the idea, though this ending is the one that I definitely prefer. I teared up a little.

Now I'm really excited to read the final four books. Also, if you put this one next to volume 16, the covers form the extended image.

This series has 21 volumes.
