I enjoyed this short collection of taster stories. Again I am speaking as a biased critic: Gareth is a friend of mine.

Nevertheless Fallen Angels is an effective book for those curious about the Fogbound author's style and inspiration. A lot of this prose and poetry is inspired by writing group activities which isn't something you often see. Indeed Clegg goes into some detail about just what prompted each of these stories in short notes at the end, again an uncommon feature but one welcome in such collections.

While I would have liked to read some of these opening chapters as part of a whole book, I can appreciate that these things take time and there is no need to withhold promising beginnings. Besides Fogbound is out there right now.

To sum up my not-so-subtle lack of objectivity, I recommend Fallen Angels to fans of Steam Punk looking to see what else Clegg has to offer.

Notable Stories

• Tokyo Prime - the most holistic story with creepy cyberpunk action.

• The Last Cuzzer - a cheeky boozy send-up of a famous scene.

• Fogbound Diaries - an evocative short history of London at war.

just what you might expect from an anthology/something in it worth a look. moving at times, beautiful in places, thought provoking in spots. a few surprises, which is a surprise in itself, just a little more than I expect from anthologies. one or two is not a surprise, but after that... so, worth a look, as these tend to be, maybe more so. maybe even file it next to Bradbury, it's pretty good

Like all compilations there is good and bad. Maybe it should have started with the best story. If this is your bag there will be something to please you.
