Hair Out of Place

Rate this book
Confined to a London penthouse his whole life, hardly anybody knows that happy-go-lucky Raphie d’Oro is a prince in exile. Not even his grumpy new bodyguard, Griff Thompson. But when assassins strike, Raphie is forced to flee out into a strange new world with his crush on Griff growing. It’s a race against time to get Raphie to his European home country so he can claim the throne and save his life.

Griff has to remain professional, especially when he discovers Raphie is a real-life prince, but he’s increasingly drawn to the beautiful Raphie and his mesmerising long hair. There are only so many beds they can share before the pull between them becomes impossible to ignore.

But they’re living in a fantasy. Raphie is going to be a king, and Griff is almost twice his age and going nowhere. Griff knows they have no future together, no matter what Raphie insists. However, Griff also knows he’ll do anything to protect Raphie from harm, and that includes not breaking his heart. Can he really do his duty and walk away, or will true love conquer all?

Hair Out of Place is a steamy, standalone MM romance novel featuring a fierce feline companion, a lot of mouthwatering food, even more mouthwatering snuggles, a makeover for a royal ball to remember, and a guaranteed HEA with absolutely no cliffhanger.

1.5 stars, rounded up to be generous. Well, I "finished" it (that is, I skipped most of the final chapters, reading bits and pieces to get to the HEA).

I generally enjoy Ms. Juliet's writing and her writing style, so I'm not sure I can articulate what didn't work for me in this book. I did get very tired of the bemoaning between the two -- "Oh, Griff will never love me. I'm too innocent and young!" and "Oh, Raphie will never love me. I'm too old and cynical." OMG, people, really? How many times do we have to have these internal monologues???

What bodyguard "school" did Griff attend? It's a good thing the "assassins" were so clueless, because Griffin and Raphie should have been dead ages ago.

Good thing this was Kindle Unlimited....

This is definitely not my favorite by Helen Juliet - I think she has sold herself short with that one. Because it was just too much - Raphi was too innocent, Griff to distracted and stupid, the assasins even more stupid and a lot of the conflicts were "an den Haaren herbeigezogen" - as we say in Germany (dragged by the hair - which fits perfectly to the theme).
For me it was too sugary sweet with to much repetition of the same issues. I finished the audiobook but I won't relisten it. Therefore - okay, 3 stars but now I'm in need of something with a bit more bite.

DNF ...time of death 50%

There is, apparently, a unique skill in creating a young character who is innocent with copious youthful energy, and who also is incredibly naive, without making them seem like a child. This is something I struggled with when reading Eli Easton’s Howl at the Moon series, and I really struggled with it here.

Also, for a lot of action, I was incredibly bored.

I realised I definitely did not feel comfortable seeing a character as seemingly childish as Ralphie in a sexual situation and that coupled with how bored I was led me here.

Hair Out of Place was a fun fairy tale retelling of Rapunzel.
This was familiar to me, but the more interesting thing that Rapunzel has become Raphael/ Raphie.
It was a hectic adventure dor Raphie and his bodyguard to get him finally be a King.
This was fun and enjoyable read

Raphie is a ray of sunshine who has lived most of his life in a sheltered penthouse and apparently that doesn't seem to faze him because Raphie is also absurdly rich.
Turns out our ray of sunshine needs some protection because the world is a dark place, enter Griff. Well Griff is like looking for an easy protection detail job and bla bla, when barley on his first day on the job everything goes sideways.
This is told as a road trip kind of story, we get to see both MC's in different countries and in different settings, because least I forget Raphie is also a prince and you know Prince's of these days have to travel to get to their throne.
Also I loved Griff and Raphie together and loved how their roles were reversed when they were together as a couple.
Well this was beautiful with more of a touch on fantasy and kingdoms with some smexy moments in between.

I just got too bored. Way too much internal monologue for my taste. At 70%, I skipped forward to the last two chapters and got the cheesy delicious HEA.

The story has some interesting ideas and there’s potential here but it just moves way too slowly. I found myself skimming through several parts just wanting to get to the points where there would be action and the story arc would move forward. There’s way too much self reflective naval gazing and introspection. And despite that I never really felt like I got to know Griff at all. Why was he practically penniless and never able to afford food? He has a job clearly. One he’s been at for years. We get very little background information on him. We get to know a bit more about Raphie but so much of his back story doesn’t make sense. (Can’t be specific without spoilers.)

I’m giving it an OK/Good rating as it’s an interesting premise, there are some funny scenes, some good action scenes, some really sweet scenes and I loved Swallow.

**I voluntarily read an arc and this is my unbiased opinion.**

I loved Raphie and Griff’s story. It grabbed me right from the beginning and didn’t let go until the end. I thought it was a wonderful mix of romance and drama, with several edge-of-seat action scenes.

I loved Raphie and Griff, and although this is Raphie’s first time venturing into the outside world, I thought in many ways he was more insightful than Griff about a lot of things. I thought it said a lot about his strength of character that he does so well in a world he’s only seen through media before now. I love how they’re both dorky in their own way, and how they connect as friends as well. The ongoing movie star reference when booking accommodation etc is fun. I loved how Griff takes the time to ask Raphie what pronouns he prefers, and later asks if he’d be more comfortable in a dress. He accepts Raphie for who he is, and falls hard and fast. So does Raphie. I felt for them thinking they’d have to give each other up once Raphie takes the throne, and how their mindset and determination around that changes as they realise neither is prepared to give the other up. Their physical relationship is sweet, intimate, and caring. I love the time spent in the French cottage.

Although this is Raphie and Griff’s story I can’t review the book without mentioning Sparrow. Her personality shines throughout, and I loved her, and the way she works her way into Griff’s heart as well.

Raphie’s half-sister, Alessa, rocks. I loved how she was nothing like I expected. The old lady at the ball and her reaction to everything was fabulous too.

The HEA of this book and the scenes at the ball leading up to it were perfect in so many ways. This is only my second read of a book by this author. I need to play catchup!

Hair Out of Place is an amazing bodyguard romance. With a political aspect thrown in, Helen Juliet had me riveted throughout this read. Damn, the author starts this one off with a bang. Literally. I was instantly hooked and couldn't get enough of this story.

Raphie and Griff's tale is action packed and danger filled. There's suspense, intrigue, and plenty of humor. And a cat named Sparrow.

It's a forbidden romance as Griff falls for the one he's protecting. Raphie's personality comes to life immediately; fun, bouncy, and refreshing. Adding to the fun, Griff has no clue what this job involves, finding out along with the reader.

Everything about this tale is fresh and quick witted. The writing is fantastic, with Raphie and Griff's journey fully coming to life; danger, action, attraction, and want. There's plenty of sexual tension between the two, and some hot sex once they act on their feelings. Their story includes an age gap with is fabulous, and plenty of political intrigue.

Raphie is a unique character from the start. He's in his 20s but has never left his apartment. Instead of being awkward and withdrawn, he's social and happy go lucky. As a young man who has never left his apartment, this is nothing one would expect, including Griff. I absolutely love the way Raphie's new found experiences are told, with everything from trains to ordering food being an adventure.

Further adding to the fun is the fact that Raphie is non-binary, with his hair meaning the world to him. I had tears in my eyes for the way Griff supports him.

Hair Out of Place is a fabulous mix of suspense, romance, and love. Helen Juliet thrills and delights throughout this entire combo of fairy tale and insta love. Everything about this book works for me and I can't recommend it enough.

Raphie is referred to as a ray of sunshine throughout the book, and the same could be said about the book, itself. It was impossible not to have a goofy grin on my face while reading this book.

I could totally relate to Griff’s predicament with not being able to help himself from enjoying his charge’s company. Try as he may, and he really did, he couldn’t fight it for long. Those goofy grins are impossible to hold back.

This was such a fun, sweet, and joyous read. It was well written and captivating. The characters were perfectly developed for this story. Everything just came together and worked. This was a great retelling of an old fairy tell. It’s easily my favorite, so far. I loved Griff & Raphie together.

This book is a welcomed addition to my library, and will sit amongst the books I love to re-read. I cannot wait for it to come alive on audio. (Please make it happen, HJ)

This story started out feeling like a retelling of Tangled to me. I hadn't read the blurb, so I didn't know what to expect, but Raphie spent his entire life hiding out with his mother in a tower in the clouds in London, where no one knew he existed. He had long, shimmering platinum blond hair, and he was hiding out until he inherited his rightful place as the King to a small English owned country in Italy. That was where the likeness ended.

When his new bodyguard Griff started, there was a break-in at Raph's Penthouse and they were on the run, with time running out to get to Italy. But, there was plenty of time for the two of them to get acquainted and discover that there was something about the two of them together that was magical.

Even though this wasn't a retelling, the mystical sweetness of a Disney fairytale was there throughout the story, giving each scene a dash of sugar and sparkle.

I did enjoy this tale as a palate cleanser, but it wasn't a raw, gritty story full of adventure and suspense.

An action-packed contemporary retelling of Rapunzel.
Another great addition to Helen Juliet’s modern, M/M retelling of classic fairy tales. The author has a knack for sweet, quite low-angst stories, and the romance part between Raphie and Griff is exactly that: sweet, steamy and absolutely swoony.
BUT, Raphie and Griff are also on the run to save Raphie’s life; , and on a time limit, if Raphie is to claim his right to the throne of the imaginary reign of Campanula.
Griff’s struggle to remain professional as Raphie’s bodyguard is at war with his desire to wrap his arms around the younger man as his lover and never let him go!
I adored Raphael, a bright ray of sunshine, and so sweet he reminds me of a fluffy kitten, but, if provoked, the kitten has claws!

This may be my new favourite narration by Kieran Flitton so far: listening to Kieran call Raphie “beautiful” or “my clever boffin” in Griff’s gruff voice was the best thing ever!

I loved this retelling of the fairy tale Rapunzel. It is impossible to not fall in love with Raphie and Griff. As they race to Raphie's homeland, avoiding assassins along the way, you will love going along on their adventure.
There's suspense, intrigue, danger and so much more to be found in this story.
I loved getting caught up in their journey towards their HEA!

This is a charmingly sweet modern-day retelling of Rapunzel, and it successfully pulls off that fairytale vibe with the perfect blend of contemporary romance and steam. Raphie is pure adorableness. He's so bubby and full-of-life and is just an absolute ray of sunshine it is impossible not to smile when he's around. And the more time his grumpy, older bodyguard, Griff, spends with him, the harder he finds it to remain immune from Raphie's charms. Their journey together is full of dangerously hilariously moments with some genuinely inept assassins, excellent banter, and so many snuggles and sweetness your heart will just about burst.

Raphie d’Oro has spent his life in a penthouse with his mother, keeping a secret that never would have been told if his father, King of Campulan, hadn’t died. This triggered a flurry of events. Relentless and entirely unlucky assassins attempt to fulfill the contract on Raphie’s life.

Griff, Raphie’s bodyguard, hadn’t expected his first day on this assignment to appear like a bad action movie. But here they were, running for their lives and on a deadline to get Raphie to claim his birthright.
What appealed to me was the nonbinary representation with Raphie. I wish there were more books with nonbinary characters. The way Raphie’s choses pronouns, his preferences of dressing, was all handled excellently. It felt natural and easily understood.

The romance between the Raphie and Griff was so-so.

With the good, comes the bad.
This read like a comedic romance, with some unbelievable plot points that I couldn’t get over. If they were on such a time crunch to get Raphie to the throne, why did they have so much time to stop for the day and get to the romancing? They wouldn’t have. Also, the assassins, while they offered more comedic relief, were not very assassin like. I found myself skimming through some of the pages.

SPOILERS ALERT

Omg I think this might be my new absolute favourite. The best version of Rapunzel ever. Better than tangled if you can believe it. I’ve completely fallen in love. This is the most precious perfect thing I’ve read in a while.
Ughh my heart.. I couldn’t sleep the night I finished this story because of sheer excitement. The characters and the scenes in the story just kept playing in my head. Ughh I can’t go on enough about how beautiful this is.
Both the main characters in this story are absolutely stunning. I love them so much . They are now my new favourite ship. Ughh. I swear their love story is so sweet and pure. And I swear that if I could write I would write fan fiction about these two. Because when the story ends you just want the story to last forever. You want to read about their entire lives together. It’s that kind of story that you never get enough of even though it’s a perfect HEA.. you just want to read more and more. The last ship I loved this much was drarry.
Raphie is absolutely precious. He has beautiful long platinum blond hair and gorgeous green eyes. He is beautiful. He’s lived up in a penthouse of a 60 storey apartment his whole life and has never left the place. Yet he is well read, intelligent, extremely well educated and up to date with all current events. He is a chatter box and he’s so positive and he’s taken an unfortunate living situation and turned it into something positive. He is the kind of person who will make the grumpiest man smile. He is a 21 year old gay and non binary person and prefers the pronouns him/he. He lives with his mum who he loves very much. They are Also fabulously rich. And also he is a prince an the heir to the throne of a small European country.
Griff comes into Raphie’s life as his private body guard. Raphie’s life is in danger and the cruel late King of Campanula (Raphie’s dad) has sent assassins after him to kill him as he does not want his illegitimate son to be king.
Griff comes into the job knowing nothing about Raphie and thinking it would be a boring job of baby sitting a spoilt rich kid. But to his surprise who he meets is a down to earth chatterbox who is undeniably beautiful.
Griff is 37 years old. He’s a grumpy but also ruggedly handsome man. He’s not had the best life so far. He also struggles to make ends meet. So when he was offered a large sum of money to do a boring job he took it with no second thoughts.
Sparks fly between them the moment they meet. And Griff completely changed his original preconceived notion about Raphie. He finds him completely endearing.
Omg this book is so full of action and Drama and humour and romance and sexy times and sweet moments and yummy food and beautiful holiday cabins. This story is completely enchanting and I promise you will not be able to put it down even for bathroom breaks and the best part is it’s a super long deliciously sweet book that you will just want to devour.
Before Griff is even briefed about who and what his client is and what the job requires, they get attacked right at the pent house. I absolutely enjoyed the fight/scuffle/attempted murder that ensues. It’s really funny because these assassins turn out to be quite stupid and incompetent. I loved how Raphie insists that his cat/best friend Sparrow is not left behind. Griff won my love and respect when he makes it a point to find Sparrow before leaving. Omg their escape by parachute was the ultimate thrill. Omg the joy and exhilaration that Raphie experienced. Raphie who had never ever been below out of his tower. His only connection to down below was when he used to send paper planes from his terrace down into the city. OMG the idea that that was how he tried to stay connected to the city below is heart breakingly sweet.
I love how Griff completely takes charge in taking Raphie to a safe place even though he knows nothing about him. And I love how Raphie hero worships and lusts after a Griff who jumped of a 60 storey building to save him and his cat. The UST between them is sizzling. I loved Raphie’s innocent joy and wonder at the smallest things. Seeing the small things from his point of view brings to mind all the things we take for granted. His first time taking the under ground tube. His excitement for being able to be common by tipping a busker 100 quid. The buskers reaction was priceless.
Griffs total shock but also understanding of when he finds out that Raphael D’Oro is actually a prince and the heir to the throne is sweet. How he feels anger at Raphael’s dad for being so cruel. I love how Griff protects Raphie with his life. And I love the complete trust that Raphie has in him. I love how they come out to each other.. I love how awkward Raphie is but how he still perseveres. Bossy Raphie is the ultimate best. I was so excited at this point when Prince James and Theo were mentioned.
Their stay at Bev’s B&B was really nice. I love Raphies wonder and appreciation for the beautiful bed and breakfast. How he just couldn’t stop looking around. Bev was so sweet. I absolutely loved her. We need more Bevs in the world. I love how she assumed they were a couple and fussed over them and how she was thoughtful enough to even get a bed for Sparrow.. I can’t believe I’ve not given Sparrow a proper introduction. She is one of the cutest and sassiest cats you will ever meet...a cat with soooo much personality. She’s ginger with a smushed face and beautiful blue eyes. And she’s is a loyal and true companion to Raphie.. I love the way both Sparrow and Raphie take care of each other and how in tune with each other’s moods they are. I also love how the book translates what sparrow must be thinking by the looks she gives., its absolutely precious.
Forced Bed sharing is my absolute favourite trope. And they share a bed and it awesome cos the next day they kiss and grope in bed for the first time. It is Raphie’s very first kiss and it’s so hott. But of course Griff feels guilt and regret. It’s makes Raphie so sad because he really likes Griff.
Griff getting the news from Winston ( Raphies Mum’s bloody guard) that he has to safely get Raphie all the way to Campanula was music to my ears.
Their stop at Winston’s French holiday cabin was Completely magical. It’s a really beautiful romantic place by a lake and they totally love it. They stay there for a magical 2 days. Both of them are reluctant to leave that haven. They realise and accept their feelings for each other at that cabin.. Raphie cooks delicious food for Griff and they have the most amazing sexy times. I love how Griff thinks Raphie looks completely ethereal, just like a merman. Griff brushing Raphies hair at the beach is the sexiest sweetest thing ever. Brushing your lovers hair is definitely a trope. Omg it has to be.
They leave the cottage with a heavy heart knowing that once Raphie is king Griff won’t have chance a at a relationship with him. I love how Griff stops pretending that he doesn’t have feelings for Raphie. Omg the murder attempt in the forest was really heart breaking and scary.. to see Griff being continuously tasered and blinded with pepper spray and being kicked and punched was heart breaking and scary. My heart soared when a crying Raphael tried to protect Griff when he said “ I won’t leave you Griff, I love you.” I think I cried in that scene. It was so touching. love how Sparrow rescues the day. She’s such a hero.
The receptionist Angelo from the hotel is a complete sweetheart. I love how he feels bad at their bruised and wet and disheveled sight. How he just wants to pamper and spoil them. And how he sends up a gift basket and free breakfast.. and Raphies pure joy at that fact. it’s too sweet. I love how Raphie and Griff find comfort in each other’s arms. It’s so sweet.
Edmundo the tailor was such a boss I loved him.. when Raphie was feeling claustrophobic and uncomfortable in his suit for the Ball, I love how Edmundo knew exactly what accessories to add to the ensemble to make him feel comfortable and confident and feel like a king.
Omg the Ball..I love how everyone was looking at Raphie and Griff tells him it’s because he’s so beautiful. When the assassins attack I love how Griff fights with everything in him to keep Raphie safe. Omg when Raphie selflessly jumps in front of Griff when the four Gaurds come with Tasers’, I think i I cried. Omg I loved Princess Alessa and her mum. Alessa is sassy and so sweet. I love that she didn’t want to be coronated as Queen and how she was more than happy to accept her brother in the place. The homophobic Premier pissed me off but I love how amazing an advocate Alessa and Ismeralda were for Raphie’s cause. How they excitedly accepted his gay and non binary status. And how they were okay with him having a common boyfriend.. I was so excited when Prince James endorsed Raphie as king so publicly. I must mention that I have a special place in my heart for the old woman with the gold clutch. We need more old ladies like her. The epilogue was so perfect I could cry. I love Raphie as king.. and I love when Griff calls him your highness. I love that they have thier own rooms. And that sparrow finally gets to roam around the place grounds freely. Raphies mum and Winston being a couple made me so happy.. this was really really beautiful.. I love this Rapunzel and his happily ever after.. Disney doesn’t stand a chance. It makes your heart feel warm like melted chocolate.

A first read for this author with this book and I had high hopes it'd be a goodie..
A okayish start as it fast becomes dramatic as scenes start with a bang.. Raphael's scenes at the start didnt jell for me as he "dances around" that being a 21 yrs acting as a child. The next scenes play out and yah I'm asking questions thats not possible to happen..
I struggled with this and skimmed further. I liked Griff and he knew what he was doing. But yah I'm calling it Not For Me.
Griff hadn't meet his new client yet as his bodyguard to protect.
Raphael's 21 yrs identity was secret.
*I received an advanced readers copy and this is my honest review.

“Never underestimate the power within you, because you may be the only person in the entire universe to solve a specific problem.” ~ Gift Gugu Mona

Raphael d’Oro (Raphie) has spent almost his entire life isolated in a tower on the 20th floor of a high-rise building because his father, king of a small kingdom named Campanula, wants him dead. He has had many bodyguards to keep him safe, but never one like Griff Thompson.

Griff isn’t thrilled by the latest assignment he has agreed to because the money is too much to turn down. The job is to protect a privileged young man who he assumes is bound to be obnoxious. Griff is pleasantly surprised to find that Raphie is kind, down to earth, and smart. He begins to think maybe this won’t be so bad after all. As he always does when first taking a job, Griff surveys the apartment, looking for possible dangers, escape routes, etc. Fortunately, he does that because before he can even be briefed, they come under attack. Raphie has prepared for this inevitability for years but now that it is here, he is extremely happy that Griff is there. Raphie’s refusal to leave without his beloved cat, Sparrow, results in leaving them trapped. Not to be defeated, Griff devises and carries out a spectacular escape that surprises even himself.

Once they are out of immediate danger, Raphie begins to feel guilty that Griff wasn’t briefed before the attack. As soon as he can, Raphie explains his situation, that he is heir to a kingdom and the illegitimate son of the now-deceased king. He explains that his father hated him and has tried to get rid of him his entire life. Griff is completely overwhelmed by this information. Although he is naturally protective of his clients, this is so much more than he signed up for. He decides that he will get Raphie to the border, as he is asked to do by his mother and her man, but that will be where his job will end.

Giff feels bad because he knows that, even though Raphie has trained for this all of his life, he is still an inexperienced young man who is on his own for the first time. Raphie is trying his best to live up to who he is, but it is clear that he is overwhelmed. Worse yet, he is obviously attached to Griff and trusts him. Against his better judgment, Griff promises Raphie that he will go with him to Campanula where Raphie will attempt to claim his birthright and, hopefully, get his country back on the right track. The tricky part is to get him there without both of them being killed in the process.

Most people are familiar with the fable ‘Rapunzel’. There are a few points of reference that amused me. The main character’s name is Raphael instead of Rapunzel. Raphael is a prince instead of being rescued by one. Raphael’s kingdom is called Campanula which also happens to be the ‘offending plant’ in ‘Rapunzel’. Another twist was that Griff was ‘blinded’ by mace instead of thorns. Last but not least, Raphael like Rapunzel had great hair. Of course, my favorite character of all is Sparrow, Raphie’s brave, loyal, and protective cat. ‘Hair Out of Place’ is a clever, delightful take on ‘Rapunzel’. Thanks, Helen, I truly enjoyed it.

Fabulous Story & Narration🎧 Gripping & Heartfelt!
Hair Out of Place
By: Helen Juliet
Narrated by: Kieran Flitton

I enjoyed this book immensely, the story grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it straight to the end. This is my first Helen Juliet book, I enjoyed her writing style and the the characters and storylines she created. I love how she put her own spin on the classic fairytale Rapunzel, it is imaginative and original. I adored the two lead characters, Griff Thompson and Raphael “Raphie” d’Oro, they were easy to relate to and connect with. While some of the characters and storylines were over the top at time I felt it added to the charm of the story and made it seem more of a modern day fairytale. Griff work in security and is hired to be Raphael’s new body guard, his first day on the job turns in to a whirlwind of activity and action. His client is threatened and he is forced into protective mode even before he is properly informed of details and what the job entails. It does not take long to figure out he is in way over his head. Raphie, has lived a life in seclusion seeing only his mother and staff, but he spent his whole life preparing for the day he would have to leave. But he soon learns learning remotely is not a substation for what it is like in real life. Griff turns out to be the perfect man for the job and maybe even for him. Not only did these two instantly bond but Griff was patient with Raphie, he fought off his attraction because he knew nothing could happen other then safely getting him to Campulan so he could claim his rightful place on the throne. I love dhow everything played out in this book, the story is both beautifully and cleverly plotted, there was plenty of drama, action, twists and turns, thrilling and suspenseful moments, some humor, heartfelt and emotional moments and a wonderful romance with some hot sexy times. Shout out to Sparrow, Raphie’s side kick who accompanied him on his journey. Helen Juliet, thank you for the fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Kieran Flitton is a talented narrator and voice artist. He did a great job portraying the characters, bringing them to life, giving each their own distinct voice and personality, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the fabulous listen🎧

Gay Rapunzel (an audio review)

“Little did Griff Thompson know on the first day of his new job, that the assassins sent to kill his client would be so utterly inept.”

I have listened to several of Ms. Juliet’s books and they always have the best first lines. Seriously, she could teach a class, and I’d be the first to sign up. I had high hopes for this book and, for the most part, I wasn’t disappointed.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.

Okay, so from the top of a 60-story London tower Raphie can hardly let down his hair – literally or figuratively. He is a secret prince in hiding, waiting for the day he can return to his homeland and claim his birthright. No big deal, right? Except things have changed, and assassins are out to get him, laying siege to his penthouse in the sky. He and his mother are at risk and Griff is the only thing keeping Raphie from meeting certain death. So, yes, exciting beginning.

Except – and this did niggle – the assassins truly are incompetent. I mean, seriously? How did they ever get the job? There’s another point where everyone meets up again and I rolled my eyes in incredulity. Was this enough to detract me from enjoying the story? No. Did it annoy me? Unfortunately, yes. And while we’re mentioning things that irritated, there was the whole upstairs/downstairs brain thing. Once or twice the whole thinking with cock rather than mind is cute, but the mentions just kept coming – from both characters – and it became a little much.

Still with me? Good, because I enjoyed the book, and I don’t want you to think the irritants were too much. Things I liked – that Raphie is non-binary and doesn’t fit the norm of gender stereotypes and, more importantly, Griff notices and respects it. Now, the impracticality of having hair down to your waist did leave me with a few questions, but hey, this is fiction and there are guys who choose to do this. Definitely the opposite to the hypermasculine Griff.

At times the book felt long, but the dénouement was just the perfect length, and the flawless ending banished all other minor issues. In the end, Raphie got his fairy tale ending, and I was all smiles.

Increasing my enjoyment was Kieran Flitton. He’s just a joy to listen to, and a competent narrator. So more fairy tale books, please Ms. Juliet. And narrated by Kieran would just make them perfect.

Oh and just a quick shout-out: I loved Sparrow the cat.

DNF - abandoned at 75%
I would have put the book aside way earlier but I wanted to know how the author would finish the story. But then there was yet another slap-stick scene with failing assassins and Raphie behaving yet again like no one would in such a situation which made me think again whether the book might simply be a parody. And from there onward I couldn't take it seriously and had to put it aside.

What made me want to read it: age gap and Prince/bodyguard tropes

The characters: Raphie (21), Prince and brainiac; Griff (37) bodyguard and movie fan
Raphie is annoying in his worldly innocent way. Instead of just "stating" or "saying" things he always "cries" when he speaks, but on the other hand he does not seem super concerned that there are people out there who want to actually kill him. The only thing he is concerned is his very strange cat - don't get me wrong, I love cats, but this particular feline really got on my nerves mainly because of Raphie's endless cooing and fussing over her. After all, he is a 21 years old human who - okay, yes - lived in his ivory tower for just as long but has several degrees and a top education and therefore I as a reader expected a more mature character.
Griff doesn't "state" or "say" things either. Instead he grunts and mumbles all the time which made him the brawny bodyguard who only lives for his job, the gym, watching movies and eating take-away. The author wanted to give him some depth somehow but for me this doesn't work when the actual conversations that hint on that are merely told rather than spoken. Plus: of course he doesn't want to start something with Raphie and of course this resolution lasts until they land in bed together in night ONE. But he always reminds himself to stay professional to protect Raphie. Spoiler: he does not. And that gets them both nearly killed.

The plot: Prince and bodyguard flee the country to get Prince to safety and on his rightful throne. It had some potential for me; but the story turned out to be highly incredible and peppered with plot holes. The assassins were ridiculous (which Griff finds as well, but why create them like that? It makes the story highly ridiculous.) and stereotypical: the incompetent siblings, the handsome guy with the medieval weaponry and the shuriken-throwing woman with the fake Japanese accent. Why? It seems like they WANTED to fail. They destroyed the whole story for me.

What was good: Their sex talk was very considerate and maybe the only occasion where Griff was portrayed in a more intelligent and thoughtful way. Also, Raphies hair and his being nonbinary were certainly interesting factors in the book. Which in the end didn't help to make it a good one for me, though.

Tangled just so happens to be my favourite Disney film and Helen Juliet has done great justice to the mm tale of Rapunzel. There are so many things that I loved about this story - the relationship that Griff and Raphie build whilst on a mission to evade assassins and get Raphie to Capanula, his country of birth and where he needs to go to claim his birthright as king before his 12 year old half sister is pushed to the throne.
Raphie comes as a surprise to Griff, who was expecting a spoilt snobbish young man but is instead greeted with a man who exudes sunshine, intelligence and kindness. When they have to go on the run after an ambush at the high rise tower Raphie has lived for most of his life by the most ridiculous assassins, off they run! With the cat, of course, who is more than happy to ride along in the backpack. On their journey, a friendship blossoms despite Griff's reluctance and tense situations lead to emotion and attractions spilling over. There are so many sweet moments and definitely some hot ones once they give into their desires. However there's a lot of reticence on Griff's side as he doesn't believe himself worthy of a young man such as Raphie, especially a future king But Raphie knows what he wants and though he's inexperienced in the outside world he is very determined to get to their end point, keep spirits up and get his man in the end, no matter how grumpy he can be.
I love how attached Griff gets to Raphie's hair, just bringing the Rapunzel aspect even more. Raphie is non-binary and Griff is so open to learning about who the young man is. Sparrow, Raphie's cat is a brilliant addition to the story, basically another character with his own personality. There are a lot of great side characters that enhance the story - Raphie's mum and his half sister, and several of the assassins are laugh out loud funny.
This is a story that starts with a bang, carries you along on action, drama, heat and fun, and finishes the same way. Cannot recommend enough, it's such an enjoyable way to enjoy this fairytale romance.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

Independent reviewer for Gay Romance Reviews, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is a retelling of the fairy tale Rapunzel, and it is glorious!
Griff is called in to guard Raphie, who hasn’t left his penthouse since he was 3 years old. There is something else going on, though, and it takes time for Griff to get the full picture. Once he does, he goes full on Protect-Who-Is-Mine Alpha mode! He just needs to remember once Raphie is where he needs to be, Griff has to walk away.
I can’t stress how much I loved this book, but I’m gonna try to keep the gushing to a minimum and write a review that actually makes sense. Maybe. Sorta.
I loved that right from the start, Griff knew something was not quite as it seemed, and that things get out of hand from that first day. I loved that, while somewhat spoilt, Raphie wasn’t a brat about it. He knew what lay ahead for him, and for Griff, but he wasn’t all whiny and whingy about it.
Raphie knew his place was in his father’s birth country, on that throne, but his father isn’t the loving the person he should be, and his death triggers a contract on Raphie. A contract taken up by several out of practise assassins, who bungle along, trying to get to Raphie but Griff blocks them every time! It did make me laugh, those assassins!
Raphie and Griff attraction grows over time, although time is in short supply for them. The whole book takes place over a week, as Raphie tries to get to the throne before they crown his 12-year-old half-sister. Who, I must add, was a total surprise! I loved that once they admitted their attraction to each other and acted it, they were both all in. And Raphie, while knowledgeable in many things, was very naïve about that attraction, but once he sampled what he was missing?? That boy was hot hot HAWT!!
Such a warm and fuzzy feeling I’ve not had in a while and I was left with that fuzz for days, days I tell ya!
A delicious, delightful, sweet and sexy, warm and fuzzy, too darn stinking cute for its own good...

**Possible Spoilers**
I am so glad I took the time to read this. I am usually leery about modern takes on fairy tales, but this is good. I did not feel like I was getting beaten upside the head with Rapunzel references. Hair Out of Place stands on its own.
The story grabbed me right away with Raphie’s quirky yet engaging behavior. And it kept my attention when, at the onset, the author didn’t hesitate to throw deadly circumstances at these characters.
The bad guys are well written, and I could almost picture them as they went through the motions of attempted assassination. They are serious in their intent, but their execution is much lacking. This leads to some danger and pain, but also some comedic relief, keeping the piece from being too heavy. I was kept on my toes, wondering when the next attack would come.
Raphie’s character is what you would expect from someone kept locked up in a tower all his life, minus a lousy attitude. That was one of the very few things I found unbelievable in this tale, because I know I would have an incredibly poor attitude if I was locked up like that. But he is a beautiful person, and I fell in love with him. He is sweet and charming, and just what Griff needs in his life.
Griff's character is not what I would expect a seasoned bodyguard to be. I found it hard to believe in his career's efficacy based on some of the book's incidents. The immediate and sometimes overwhelming feelings, both emotional and physical, that he has for Raphie would be a good reason to knock him off his professional game, though. And their connection is strong from the very first. His backstory gives the wheres and whys of his life and outlook, but I wish I could have learned more about him.
In all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I look forward to more from this author.

If you're reading the trio of The Fairy Tale Collection, I think you'll agree that this is the best of the three. The first was "meh" enough that I DNF and moved on to the second, which was much better. This third book is lightyears better. The Rapunzel tie-in was done in an interesting way, and I think the whole premise for the book was pretty cool and really worked.

Okay, I'm a sucker for the bodyguard trope, and it's done extremely well in this book, so yum. :) There's also the age gap trope, which I think is hard to pull off as a balanced relationship, but again, she did it well. Then there was the class difference - also pulled off well. And finally: forced proximity for the win!

If the cover of a book has no image of either of the characters that I like, I sometimes go hunting for one, and in this case it was a no brainer: Orlando Bloom as Legolas. He was even the right age when he was in the first film (23). Legolas was mentioned late in the book, so the author obviously had him in mind. Love love loved the long, white-blonde hair!

The story started with an incredibly exciting scene that set up Raphael's flight from assassins, with Griff as his protector. As the two make their way over the Channel and across Europe, they have run-ins with various would-be assassins along the way. They also eventually succumb to their mutual attraction, huzzah. There's a lot of swoon-worthy romance and steam in this one, but not so much that it detracted from the urgency of their race against time.

The danger heats up as the MCs get closer to their goal, and the final confrontation is both exciting and gratifying. We even get an appearance from a couple in a previous book, which is fun.

Audiobook: Kieran Flitton is superb in every way. Hopefully he will get some material to narrate that he can really sink his teeth into!

This delightfully re-imagined version of Rapunzel took me on an exciting journey full of steamy moments and sweet bonding between Griff and Raphael. Precious Sparrow kitty was an unexpected gem in this story, and the way Griff and Raphael showered her with affection showed me what wonderful people they were before I knew anything else about them. Amidst the intoxicating sexual tension and lighthearted get-to-know-you conversations, these two had to battle against surprisingly dangerous people and pull off a high-stakes mission to get Raphael to safety. I loved reading about their action-packed encounters as much as I loved swooning over their obvious attraction and inability to resist each other. Despite the rushed timeline and threat of death looming over their heads, Griff and Raphael's romance felt refreshingly realistic and not like insta-love at all. It was so much fun to see gruff, stoic Griff fall for such a sunshine-y and happy Raphie, even as Griff battled with himself over his responsibilities as a bodyguard. When the two of them did explore their chemistry, I was overwhelmed by how wildly passionate and unbelievably hot they were together. I was so caught up in the lighthearted fairytale of a romance that it took me completely by surprise when reality barged back in with its ugly brutality. Griff and Raphael had to fight every step of the way, despite brief moments of respite, and I was breathless with anticipation to see what would happen once Raphael made it to his final destination.

**I voluntarily read an ARC of this book. This review expresses my honest thoughts and opinions.
