Title - After the Outbreak
Author - Karri Kadin
Genre - sci-fi dystopian
Format - e-book

'After the Outbreak' by Karri Kadin is the first book in the book series N87 virus. Allison was infected by a virus N87 and she became a Zombie like monster. Most of the infected people died but Allison survived. Read the book to know what happened with Allison after this attack.

The cover of the book is scary yet eye catchy. Title is totally apt. The plot of the story is captivating, terrifying and seems to be somewhat to the current situation of pandemic due to virus. It is a perfect blend of science, fiction, actions and thrill with lots of twist and turns. Language used is simple and easy. Narration is quite smooth. Characterization is superb. The flow of the book is well paced.
Overall, an enjoyable read.

I LOVE the twist on a the whole “Zombie story”- this isn’t just your same old same old post apocalyptic story. The characters were great, and the story line was very intriguing!!

The story line was great. I just got so tired of all the tears - character's tears, not mine.

3 stars even. An enjoyable enough albeit flawed YOUNG ADULT story that at least takes a somewhat original look at the years following a zombie outbreak. If you want a comparison, it wound up reminding me a bit of the "Newsflesh" series by Mira Grant (aka Seanan McGuire). Not nearly as good nor as original but still in that ballpark.

I've said it here on goodreads a zillion times, but zombie books are my guilty pleasure. No "50 Shades of Silly Porn" for me, I prefer snarling tales of bloodlust and dystopian survival when I need to kick back (or clear out my head after a few really lousy reads). To be clear, "After" does supply that. And for those of you that shy away from this genre because of the gore, well, this book isn't one of the ones that relies on all the splat splat stuff, focusing instead on one "cured" victim and her quest for redemption. Which doesn't really work per se but what it does give us is at least a better basis for taking on the requisite "let's all travel from point A to point B" backbone that so many of these stories rely on.

To be positive, the overall book is very readable and in fact, I finished it in one long sitting. It keeps moving at a relatively steady pace and it kept at least this reader involved enough to stick with it. Where my - not 'complaints' but let's call them 'grumblings' - begin is that the actual writing style changes as the book progresses, moving from what I found initially to be some really top-notch prose to rather basic YA yada yada. Ya ya.

For example, even the first sentence of the book is just fantastic in its imagery:
"Blood-curdling screams cut through the upbeat dance music like a hunter’s skinning knife slicing through flesh."
However, about the time we start collecting a group of cohorts - all of whom despite their experience (including an actual Marine vet) act like they're barely 16 - 18 years old - the good eye candy that an amateur lexicographer might hungrily devour (oooh, like that!) goes the way of a dodo covered in meat sauce (ok I'll stop). We get a lot of silly lovey dovey stuff and more crying that any one book should contain. Really, we get it, it's a sad world and people are weepy. Sheesh, blow your nose and move on please.

The editing also begins to get a bit shakey, not grammatically but sometimes with the wrong word being used (spellcheck won't catch that kids). For example:
"As Dr. Neff stood in the door, the rattle of the building caused him to call to the floor..."
Um, so what did he call? "Help me, floor!"?
And it happens a few too many times for this former technical writer to just let it pass. Make sure you have someone with a bit of meanness in your pre-check team, gang, okay?

Finally, I think the author also missed a big opportunity to really embrace the "future-ness" of this story. We are after all in 2051 and despite our very human tendency to elect fascists or ignore basic health warnings, I would think we could have advanced a bit more than what we see here, taking into account 3 years of the excrement making physical contact with a hydro-electric powered oscillating air current distribution device. Yes, there's some mention of solar energy and moderately advanced personal phone equipment, but still having gasoline for your old truck be a concern? I don't see it, especially the way cars are made to NOT last today.

Oh well. Key conclusion for me and from me is that I'd like to continue the series. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any indication yet of when the next chapter is due so I'll just wait, I guess.

Hidden Gem!!

Very few zombie related books intrigue me, however, ms. Kadins book was really awesome. Had a good steady pace to it, enough slow parts to explain situations and fast action parts, she didn't hold back. The characters had their own unique personalities and quirks to contend with.

I don't usually write reviews, actually this is my first one in years, i just felt the need to do this. O chose all the stars because this book was filled with details, good character developments, not over the top things, realistic situations and choices. You take ordinary people and put them out of their comfort zones, they would adapt or fail.

I hope y'all give this book a chance, anxiously waiting for the next one.

Great read.

Unfortunately, I found Outbreak, her debut, a lot more exciting and a page-turner. It took a while for me to engage with the characters and follow their journey. Thankfully it did happen and the story took off and I enjoyed it. I would say give it a go and hopefully, it'll take off for you because the basic story is very good.

I have to admit, I was not excited to read an outbreak book during a pandemic. I was, however, pleasantly surprised to find a twist on the zombie apocalypse trope. Karri made a great start with this tense and compelling debut!

This story started off with a bang and kept me engaged throughout. It isn't your typical zombie story that relies a lot of gore...though this one has its moments...it is ultimately a story if redemption. I am looking forward to the next book and wish it was going to be available sooner.

Not sure how I feel about this book, but the idea of how the outbreak happened is catchy.
Kind of too dramatic but addictive.
Mixed feelings about Allison, but I loved Trevor.
Dr. Neff is unhinged.

Well-written story with graphic zombie violence. I never thought I would be rooting for a zombie, recovered or not. This has enough pandemic in it to be timely. Worthy read.

A unique story line with superb character development. It held my interest to the end even though I am not a zombie fan.

This was a really interesting and different take from the many other ‘zombie outbreak’ books out there. The story starts out right in the thick of an ‘infected’ attack that seemingly comes out of nowhere for our main character, Allison. The refreshing difference comes from the time change that sees Allison on the other side of being an ‘infected’ Instead of detailing her life with the disease, we see her recovering from the terrible viral outbreak that caused her to become something monstrous in the first place.

The first in a series, this was a very different look at the zombie genre. I’m looking forward to the next books in the series!

I’d love it if you’d listen to our interview with the author over at the 3 Book Girls podcast (episode 234)!

The main character in this story is a college freshman called Allison, who as the story started, was at a frat party bash with one of her friends. She came to, noticing screams and hearing sounds of people screaming and running for their lives. I loved the particularly graphic description of ‘the slurry of well-seasoned spaghetti noodles plopping onto the ground’, as she sees someone being attacked nearby and their insides being ripped out and consumed! The year was 2048. She escaped into the woods, but was followed by one of the mad acting people chasing everyone from the party. She end up injured and fell unconscious. Next she knew she awoke naked and knew that some time had passed since she last remembered, due to the state of her skin, nails and the length of her filthy hair. She hears an unexpected noise and then makes out it is a vehicle. She is rescued by Sandra and Dave Wilton, who tell her about the Infected and the virus N87 that hit worldwide in 2048, but that it was now 2051! Their own daughter was infected and died and they know that some like Allison can recover their humanity as such, after being infected, but that she will continue to have memories of what she did when she was infected and they will haunt her. She needs to go and find some family of friends to help her through this stage.

She ends up at a government medical facility and was supposed to be there voluntarily, but was being kept by a doctor she automatically realises has evil in mind. Nurse Catherine can’t stop her and Dr Richard Neff berates her, before Allison can get to the exit where Sandra and her husband are waiting. They are also surrounded by a large number of Collectors, armed men and women, who go out to capture Infected and put down any of their own number who get bitten, without any thought. The Infected are taken back to Dr Neff and used for his sick experiments. He has a very young boy, who like Allison has recovered from the virus, but been left with unique capabilities and strength above anything he could possibly have. Dr Neff wants to find out how and wanted to keep Allison as one of his test subjects, treating them as just specimens in a science experiment. He wants Allison!

She has to decide what to do with her new abilities and also where she should go. The Wilton’s have advised her to find what remains of her family if any. She feels she should be trying to make amends for the pain and suffering she has caused to others while infected, for the people she has killed and those left behind to cope with the remains of her murderous rampages. The Wilton’s disagree, but know she needs to find her own path to live with what she has become and what she has done in her recent past. The only problem for Alison, is the Dr Neff is still after her and he will do anything he can to get her and take all he can from her, including her life! She meets with another resistance group, but is betrayed and finds herself just one of Dr Neff’s multitude of lab rats, awaiting his next session of torture and ultimately her death. A cracking episode of a zombie apocalypse with a twist and a need to seek redemption for your prior actions. Being the one person who is possibly a cure for the virus, is not the hope for many, that it should be when you have a mad scientist after you for his own purpose. A nice change from the usual virus, zombie or apocalyptic tales you normally read and mixes it all into a brand new tale of survival. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of this book above.

i really loved this book. honestly i was thinking ok another zombie survivor book. well it kinda is but it isn't at the same time. the outbreak hits hard and fast as Allison and her friend gabby are attending a party in the woods.
she's attacked. spoiler alert: she wakes up years later in the woods naked and lost. she's found by a couple. they are on their way to a mandatory health screening. when there Allison meets dr. Neff. dr. Neff wants her. he needs her. they try to keep her prisoner at the medical camp so dr. Neff can do his experiments but she breaks free. the couple takes her home and they soon discover that she has special abilities from the infection. as the book as along Allison must run for her life from dr. Neff while she back traces her steps as an infected. along the way she finds allies and faces inner and outer demons.

The only reason for the mark down from 5 stars to 3 was the editing and formatting errors in the book. it was highly distracting in places and in others your left saying ok i can see most people missing that one. i realize its an ebook and mistakes happen but even a simplistic editing software would have caught a lot of these mistakes which is something any book being sold should go through.

𝑻𝒊𝒕𝒍𝒆: After The Outbreak
𝑨𝒖𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒓: Karri Kadin

𝑴𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘:
After the Outbreak is a blend of multiple genres: Young Adult, post apocalyptic, science fiction. It is an intriguing story. Due to N87 outbreak, millions of people across the world have been infected by a medical disease. Allison, the main character was one of them. Years later, when she met Dr Neff, he informed Allison it has been long time since she has been infected and her bone marrow could help with the cure that the world is still not able to find. It is a very hard decision that Allison has to take and she is already sensing danger.

Right from the first page, this book gripped my attention. I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Cover page of the book looks pretty awesome. Title of the story is apt. As a debut author, Karri has done wonderful job and has won my heart with her writing. I am curiously looking forward to read more reviews by her. If you love post apocalyptic stories, then pick this one. You gonna love it!!

After The Outbreak by the author Karri Kadin is the first book in the N87 Virus Book series. This is the debut novel of the author Karri. There is an outbreak in the world that infected millions of people. Most of the people who were infected from this disease died but Allison survived it. Allison was in the semester party when people started eating people.

A wild woman gaze fell on her and Allison ran into the forest. But lastly, the wild woman left a mark in Allison's body and Allison fainted. She woke up after 3 years and found her in the middle of the forest. After meeting a couple, she got to know that three years had passed and she don't even remembered what had happened with her. Grab a copy of this book and read the story yourself to unveil the suspense.

Language of the book is easy and comfortable. Narration style of the author is remarkable and seems mature. Plot is intriguing. Characterization is stunning. Pace of the story was fine.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and strongly recommend it to my fellow readers.

In this time of pandemic, "After The Outbreak" by Karri Kadin will definitely interest you. Dr Neff is finding a cure for an outbreak Lyssavirus N87. Allison who was infected from this virus long time back has strains of the virus and Dr Neff knew this. He is trying to convince Allison so she can give her bone marrow which could be helpful in finding the cure. Will Dr Neff be successful in his mission or will Allison take a step before he takes?

Written in 324 pages, the storyline was gripping so I binge read it overnight. A great debut for Young Adult Readers. Allison was guilty for the people she had killed after being infected from the disease. When everyone was thinking she is lucky to survive the disease, she was wondering how she could be lucky?

If you enjoy post apocalyptic fiction, you can't miss to read this debut novel. Looking forward to read more books by Karri.

After The Outbreak is a captivating story that will capture your attention since beginning. The language of the book is medium. Initially I have to re-read first chapter but once I got the base of the story, narration was in a flow then. Allison is the protagonist of the story. She is in College and the students are busy in a semester party. Soon there was flesh, blood, lifeless eyes of people. When an angry woman who was eating a guy's flesh came towards Allison, Allison only had a choice to run as faster as she can. Will this eater be able to catch her? Cover of this book is attractive and can easily attract readers. The storyline is engaging. Language of the book is simple so average readers can also enjoy this book. Overall this is a very interesting read and if you like to read stories about pandemic, zombie, etc then go ahead with this without thinking twice. I am sure it will not disappoint you.

🔷 BOOK: After The Outbreak
🔷 AUTHOR: Karri Kadin

After The Outbreak is a a great story that Karri has written well. The title itself gives a hint what the story is about. There is an outbreak that has taken so many lives. There are the infected. If a person is scratched by them, then he can hardly be able to survive. Allison, a college student stars were lucky that she survived the disease. But surviving the disease itself is scary because Dr Neff has eyes on her bone marrow as it contains stem cells that can be used to create a cure.

Review:
1) Cover photo is eye catchy.
2) Title of the story is apt and related to the contents of the story.
3) Narration is so smooth that made me to enjoy the story.
4) Character development is amazing. I liked Allison's character as it is penned down well.
5) Plot is constructed after giving great thoughts to it. It has the power to attract reader's attention.

An unputdownable book!!

This interesting and exciting journey that Allison was on after she was infected was filled with so many different places and intriguing people. She found a new family that loved her but had to leave because of Dr Neff. Then, she she fell in with another group she called family and the curse caused trouble there as they ran from Dr Neff. Allison’s drive to be better and her new family‘s belief in her helped to keep her rage from becoming too much but in the end would it be enough to stop Dr Neff? Good read. Can’t wait for the next book!
